Using Nikon Optics on Canon Cameras

Using Nikon Optics on Canon Cameras

Installing a Nikon lens (also called Nikkor) on modern Canon EOS Digital DSLR cameras is a snap. All Nikon lenses have the same 'F' mount. To mount any Nikon mount F lens, only Nikon-Canon adapter. When using the Nikon-Canon adapter the ability to focus on infinity. This is what my adapter looks like:

Nikon AI Adapter - Canon

My adapter went to me for $ 15 Please note that there are adapters with and without a chip. An adapter with a chip allows you to automatically confirm the focus when working with non-native lenses. If your adapter is without a chip, then you can stick it on the adapter yourself. Such a chip is called Lushnikov's Dandelion.

Type of adapter Nikon - Canon without a chip

Usually these adapters are called Nikon AI - Canon. But this does not meanthat you can only use old Nikon AI lenses. With this adapter, you can use any Nikon lens from the 60s of the last century.

You can control the iris on Non-G type lenses using the aperture ring

You can control the iris on Non-G type lenses using the aperture ring

Important: it’s very convenient to use Nikon lenses on Canon cameras, which there is a diaphragm control ring. These lenses include all Nikon lenses. Non-G Type. With this lens, aperture control is done manually. For example, I used without problems Nikon 85mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor on a Canon camera.

Non-G type autofocus lens on a Canon camera

Non-G type autofocus lens on a Canon camera

Important: G-type lenses, that is, modern Nikon lenses that do not have an aperture control ring can also be used through such an adapter. But iris control will not be available. The aperture will always be as closed as possible.

You can cheat and use such lenses always on an open aperture. To do this, simply lock the aperture lever (jump) in the open position. This is done very simply, it will not harm the lens. For example, I locked the aperture at the maximum open value for a G-type lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED AF-S DX IF Nikkor using a piece of cardboard. The same can be done by any means at hand.

Then such a G-type lens can be used only at the maximum aperture value. This can be very inconvenient, since aperture is very important for different photo tasks.

By the way, the same adapter must be used to install old lenses with Nikon F mount onto Canon EOS cameras. For example, I installed on the camera MS Helios-81H 2/50 using the same adapter.

How to shoot on such a constructor? It's simple. You only have to focus manually using the focus ring on the lens. Fortunately, all Nikon FX and DX lenses have a focus ring. Taking pictures is easier than ever in aperture priority mode, while the aperture can be manually adjusted on lenses with an aperture control ring. On lenses without an aperture control ring, you will have to take pictures at the maximum or minimum aperture value. Such a shooting process is no different from shooting with any old manual lens.

Sample Photos

Question from me to all fans Nikon and Canon. Still, what were the photos taken in the gallery above, on Nikon or on Canon? Leave the answers in the comments.

Personal experience

I sometimes come across the fact that the owners of Canon cameras buy old solid Nikon lenses Non-ai, AI, Ai-s, Ai-converted for shooting video. Nikon-Canon adapter came in handy for me to mount the lens MS Helios-81H 2/50 on my Canon 350D.

Where can I buy

The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com. For example, such an adapter can be bought here.

Conclusions:

Nikon lenses can be easily used on Canon cameras through the Nikon-Canon adapter. This eliminates the possibility of automatic focusing, and for some lenses, and iris control. Focusing on infinity is maintained.

What were the photos taken in the gallery above, on Nikon or on Canon?
On Canon, the button is what they were doing?

    EXIF is very cool :)

And there are adapters on the contrary, from Canon to Nikon. But so that all the functions of the lens are supported ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

      There is no such adapter.

      • Oleg

Why do you need this objective? Kenon has its own 55-250 is2 at a price of 150ue approximately. In your case, you need a Nikon AI to Canon adapter. Only autofocus will not work for you, and if I'm not mistaken, you will be deprived of the ability to set the aperture. All this negates your efforts. Here is Arkady's article on this subject https://radojuva.com/2013/05/nikon-canon-eos-adapter/

    • Konstantin

Due to the difference in the working lengths, it is very difficult to make such an adapter.

On the other hand, many other optics are no problem. Problems with focusing at infinity will often be on Nikon cameras, but using Pentacon optics is the most optimal option through an adapter http://m42-adapter.in.ua/adapter-pentacon-6-six-nikon-f/

The lenses were designed for medium format cameras, so it is very easy to make friends with Nikon.

      There is, and even works.

Guessing it is not necessary. It is imprinted in the white stripe of each photograph.

  • Alexey

And canon lenses for Nikon make sense to attach?

    • Novel

Alexey, the entire EF line has electronic aperture control (except for the tilt shift, perhaps), not to mention the difference in working lengths. You will shoot macro on the open.

    • garden dill

what's the point of putting soap optics instead of sharp?

Nikon whales are sharper than some elek canon, not to mention ordinary canon glasses.

      • Jury

Come on to you, and there and there, the whales are almost the same.
        I specially checked it somehow.

  • Denis

It would be cool to hammer out such an adapter so that the interfaces of Nikon's lenses would interface with Canon cameras, such as a dandelion, but advanced) But theoretically it is quite possible, microcontrollers decide ...

  • Andrei

In one of your articles there is an opinion that the quality of the photo is 70% dependent on the lens, and the carcass plays a secondary role. Otven begs for itself)))

  • burdock meadow ripening

Nikon optics are much sharper than canon, therefore, based on the early diffraction by the old 18mp matrix 60d / 600d / 7d / 550d / 650d, in order to get pictures of decent quality, Canon users have to urgently set 18-55 Nikon whales for a really sharp landscape worthy photo exhibitions.

Cool, are you by any chance a relative of dill?

    • Albert

I don’t know any such person =) But they made fun of it)))

    “Focus is NOT infinity retained”.

Thank you for the article. It was all interesting whether autofocus would work. Now the question is cleared.

  • Artyom

Clear stump kenonovskaya matrix! Nikon's yellowness gives =)

    • Alexey

And every second repeats to me that on the contrary, Canon turns yellow. Although he himself had a Canon.

  • RostovR

Arkady, thanks for raising this topic! When I chose a camera, I deliberately cut off Nikon because of the working distance. I think many potential buyers are tormented by the choice. I can put Zeiss optics (not Yen) on Kenon with Nikon here the full span. What do you think, if I preferred Nikon I could find at least something decent from the old manual Nikkors at a price of about 300 conditional? There are options on ebay. How old are the Nikkorovskys? Interested in your opinion.
Should I look at them in comparison with the Distagonians (not Yen)? For the price they are nicer quite a bit.
Does it make sense to pay a little extra and prefer the old nikkor 135mm f2.8 non ai instead of Jupiter 37, Nikkor 85 / 1.8 AI instead of Jupiter-9? Or a little overpayment, nikkor 50mm f1.2 ai against CZ planar 1.4 (CY). The Nikon-Kenon adapter is not a problem.
Sorry for the many questions, I will be waiting with interest for your comments!

  • Yuriy75

You can simply buy not a new Nikon carcass and not fool you, or now in many electronics supermarkets Nikon D3000 is sold for less than 3000 g. Decent apparatus in principle.

  • Denis

Put through the adapter, on Canon, Nikon lens, very dark photos. What can be done?

    • Denis

Forgot to clarify Canon 450 D

    • Arkady Shapoval

First you need to specify which lenses you use.

  • Anton

Arkady, good time, tell me, through such an adapter on the Canon D600, I can install the Mir 24-N lens (it has a F mount, it was installed on Nikon carcasses without any problems).
And if so, is this suitable or not? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110886740838?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
    Thank you in advance.

  • I'm learning.

I’m vibrating the camera at once, and I want to clarify up to Kenon 650 a NIKKOR AF-S 55-300mm F4.5-5.6G ED VR adapter. Bo for the minds to come up about »Activ de persha figure 18, chi won’t come before coming the act of marriage ?. I zagagіli, chi є maybutnє in betting bet? WONDERFUL.

  • Vladimr

Thank you for the article, :)

  • Andrei

Arkady, then what aperture should I put on the carcass? Accordingly, the extreme values of the lens are either minimum or maximum, i.e. only 2 values are possible?

  • Andrei

And one more thing: how will such an installation affect the quality of the image, well, is there a difference in the working segments or something else? Thanks for the review.

  • Roman

who can help bought bought I can’t take off

  • Hleb

There is a question about exposure metering, for example, canon 550d measures exposure using Helios 81 or AI Nikon lenses? Because the nikon d90 does not measure exposure using AI lenses and you need to put the expopair on the eye.

    • Arkady Shapoval

All Canon cameras measure exposure with a manual. But focus confirmation, as the same d90 does not give (only with a chip).

      • Hleb

that is, without problems, you can put ai nikon through the adapter and will it be normal metering?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          well yes :)

  • Pastor

Very nice article! Normally. But I would like to add some more information regarding adapters to it. It is quite difficult, but still possible, to find an adapter with iris adjustment (on ebee, aliexpress, etc.). Accordingly, thanks to it, you can use Nikon G glass on the canon, not only on a completely closed or completely open diaphragm, but also adjust it at your discretion during the shooting. It greatly simplifies the work with glasses. I highly recommend the owners of Nikon glasses and Canon carcasses.

Here on the weekend I took pictures for 5 days with a whale nikon 18-55. Very cool! At 18mm, a kind of circular fisheye is obtained :) Only not very wide, but also slight distortions and the whole image in a black circle. At about 24 mm, the black corners disappear. It is, however, quite difficult to aim for sharpness, thanks to the inconvenient focusing ring on the Nikon 18-55. But I do not know of any other so cheap way to get 24mm on a Canon ff camera. And I also had to catch the surprised looks of people versed in photographic equipment - a whale nikon (appearance 18-55 cannot be confused with anything) on an old ff canon :) The shooting process is simple - I slightly cover the diaphragm by 24 mm to increase the depth of field, but not fly into diffraction , I aim a little further than the subject and take a series of shots, simultaneously focusing closer and closer. From a series of 5 frames, you can always find an absolutely sharp frame, with the desired object in the depth of field. Sharpness at 18-55, by the way, is quite decent. At a slightly closed aperture (probably about 5.6, but with an adapter, accurate data cannot be obtained), the sharpness is no worse than on native Nikon cameras. On the other hand, why would she be worse :)
