Nikon D5200 review

Nikon D5200 review

Nikon D5200 is a very good amateur camera from Nikon. Nikon D2013 is the best for spring 5200 Amateur Nikon DX Camera. This review presents only the camera itself Nikon D5200 body (no specific lens). Nikon D5200 is usually sold with a standard lens like this - Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor, such a set is called 'whale'.

Nikon D5200 can be found in 3 different colors

Nikon D5200 can be found in 3 different colors

Matrix

Nikon D5200 uses the new 24 MP sensor, which allows you to take pictures of 6000 * 4000 pixels (exactly 24 MP). D5200 and D7100most likely using the same sensor, details described here. I do not recommend paying much attention to the number of megapixels, you can read the reasons here here.

24MP sensor allows you to crop (cut out parts of the image) on a computer without a strong loss in quality

The 24-megapixel matrix allows you to crop (cut out parts of the image) on a computer without a strong loss in quality. The photo shows the crop (clipping) from the original image to get a larger bee in the photo.

It is important that Nikon D5200 can use photosensitivity values. ISO 100-6400. The range can be expanded to an ISO HI2 equivalent ISO 25.600.... The 'bloated' ISO HI1 and HI2 modes in the camera are more for show than for practical use. You can set the ISO value in 1/3-stop increments, that is, you can set values like ISO 320, 640, 2500, etc. The Nikon D5200 performs well in low light conditions. It is a pity that the ISO 6400 threshold in the new Nikon D5200 has not been raised.

A picture with automatic ISO control, the camera decided to shoot at a value of 110

A picture with automatic ISO control, the camera decided to shoot at a value of 110

Nikon D5200 works well in auto ISO mode - the camera can automatically select the maximum exposure for each individual lens. For example, for a lens with a 70mm focal length, the camera sets a limit excerpts for 1 \ 125 seconds (the average position of the slider when choosing a length excerpts in automatic mode). Auto value excerpts can be made shorter or longer, 5 steps are available. You can set the range of ISO values, for example, from 320 to 6400 units. It's nice that the maximum shutter speed for the Auto ISO function can be set from 1 second to 1/2000 second, this is important when using the telephoto lens. Also, in the automatic ISO sensitivity control mode, you can set the values of Hi1, Hi2 as the maximum ISO value. Why Auto ISO function and how it works, you can read here. In general, the automatic ISO control is implemented very well, this allows you to get pictures without stirring without unnecessary troubles, for example, taking pictures with your hands. Note: as with many other Nikon cameras, ISO control is only available. in shooting modes P, A, S, M.

D5100 and D5200 are very similar to each other.

Focus, exposure metering

Finally, after a long period, a new Multi-CAM 4800DX focusing module from a more advanced model was installed in the amateur camera line Nikon D7000. The number of focus points is 39 pieces, 9 of which are cross-shaped. The same number of focus points Nikon D600. I advise you to read more about the difference in focusing systems. here, but about the focus setting - here. Before amateur level cameras Nikon D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100, D3200 had a focusing system with 11 points or worse, with 5 (Nikon D50) or 3 points (D40, D40x, D60) The Nikon D5200, with its 39 focus points, is a new breakthrough.

Focusing system can be used in a large number of modes:

  • You can choose either 39 focus points or the usual 11
  • You can turn on the electronic rangefinder, which will prompt in manual focus mode where to rotate the focus ring of the lens.
  • You can choose a bunch of different modes of the focus system, from focusing on a single point, to 3D tracking an object in the frame. All modes are illustrated with relevant examples, a beginner will not be able to get confused in the web of the menu :)
  • In Live View, you can choose from 4 types of focusing system: 1 - Face-priority AF, 2 - Wide-area AF, 3 - Normal-area AF, 4 - Subject-tracking AF.
  • You can select the priority of the focus mode for AF-C... In priority 'release' mode, the camera obediently takes pictures in any situation.

exposure measured with 2016-pixel RGB sensor. Since release Nikon D50 in 2005, Nikon used 8 years on its amateur cameras 420-segment metering, the new Nikon D5200 also made a breakthrough in this regard, taking Nikon amateur cameras to a new level. Auto focus is closely related to metering sensor exposure, the latter can recognize recorded scenes and improve auto focus. Exactly such a sensor is used by such advanced cameras as Nikon D600, D7100, D7000.

By the way, the camera uses as an optical viewfinder pentaser mirror with 95% field of view coverage and 0.78x magnification.

Photography Speed Buffer

Nikon D5200 is Nikon's fastest amateur camera, it can shoot at the speed 5 frames per second. Performance Nikon D5200 almost the same as Nikon D3x. As many as 5 frames per second is a very good indicator. For example, the nominal speed Nikon D7100 is 6 frames per second, and the predecessor Nikon D5100 could shoot at a speed of 4 frames per second. The camera has an Expeed 3 processor, the same as Nikon D7100, D600, D800, D800E and Nikon D4. It seemed very strange to me that an image processing system, like the flagship model, was installed in an amateur Nikon D5200 camera Nikon D4... Because of this, nothing 'slows down' in Nikon D5200, the camera reacts very well to all settings changes.

Example photo on Nikon D5200

Example photo on Nikon D5200 and high ISO

JPEG L Fine files weigh an average of 8 to 15 MB. RAW files weigh on average 30 Mb each. For large files, you should invest in high-capacity memory cards. Nikon D5200 uses SD (HC, XC, UHS-I) memory cards. The Nikon D5200 uses NEF (RAW) files with 14-bit color depth.

The buffer contains:

  • 3 JPEG pictures in L size, Fine quality with all advanced settings enabled. In fact, the camera takes 4-5 pictures until it starts to slow down.
  • 11 JPEG pictures in L size, Fine quality with all advanced settings turned off.
  • 7 shots in RAW with all advanced settings turned off.
  • only 2 pictures in RAW or RAW + JPEG with all advanced settings enabled.

7 shots in RAW is not enough, at 5 frames per second the buffer is enough for less than 2 seconds of continuous shooting. By the way, I noticed one interesting feature, when using lenses without a focus motor on the Nikon D5200, the 'Aut. distortion control 'does not work.

Display. Video.

Nikon D5200 has 3-inch swivel large display  and 921.000 points. The display is the same as Nikon D5100. You can view photos and videos via HDMI using a Type C HDMI cable. There is no cable in the box.

The camera supports video quality of 1920 x 1080 60i, H.264 / MPEG-4 is written in the '.MOV' file format. Attention: to shoot in 60i you need to set NTSC mode in the menu. I couldn’t find these same 60i for an hour, as in Pal mode only 50i is available.

If you don't need a bunch of heavy video files, you can take advantage of the lower image quality - 1280 x 720 or 640 x 424. You can choose high or normal video quality. Nikon D5200 already has built-in stereo microphone. In focus mode AF-F continuous tracking focus is available when shooting video... AF-F focus mode must be set using the 'I' button while Live View is on. The focusing work when shooting video is not happy - this is a common problem for SLR cameras. To shoot video, you need to turn on Live View using a special lever, and only then press the red button to start recording video. You cannot immediately start recording a video by pressing a single button.

Example photo on Nikon D5200

Example photo on Nikon D5200

If you allow manual video settings, then in the manual camera control mode 'M', shooting video with manual control is available excerpts and ISO. Exposure can be set from 1 \ 60 (or 1 \ 30) to 1 \ 4000 seconds. When shooting video, you can immediately change the ISO value, it is very convenient to program the Fn button for ISO control for this. It is convenient to shoot video in manual mode with the Auto ISO function turned on.  Attention: during video recording, you cannot change the aperture value on which the video will be shot.

And now what very annoying when shooting 60i or 50i video. When you start shooting video, the camera does a light crop. For example, if you need to shoot a video using a 10 mm focal length lens, then there will be problems. The camera will simply turn on its crop mode. This is something similar to the 1.3 x y shooting mode Nikon D7100but it's not clear what kind of crop Nikon D5200 uses for 60i and 50i. They say it is used 1.25 x crop image. On the official website it is written about it casually or not at all. Deceiving people is not good :) In other modes, such as 1920 x 1080 30p, there is no such strange camera behavior.

Housing and management

The case is made of plastic. The camera is well-assembled, as you would expect. My copy of Nikon D5200 Made in Thailand. Due to the rotatable display, the camera does not have a button block to the left of the display, therefore the camera is more designed for controlling with one right hand. The D5200 display can be closed back and forth; in this position, it cannot be damaged during transportation. The camera menu is quite simple, there are tips everywhere. It will be easier for a beginner to understand the basic settings. I liked the INFO button menu, where excerpt and ISO are shown on the background of round control dials, as on old film cameras, while the discs are animated and rotate depending on exposure.

Externally, the Nikon D5200 camera is very similar to Nikon D5100. Nikon D5200 uses battery EN-EL14exactly the same as Nikon D3200, D5100 и D3100. Managing the camera is easy.

Sample photos:

Photos without processing. Photos taken in VI, PO, JPEG (L, Fine) mode. Reduced size to 3 MP and imprinted data from EXIF. Everything is filmed on Nikon 70-210mm и Nikon 18-70mm

Features and useful features

  1. Exposure varies from 30s to 1/4000 seconds
  2. The minimum flash sync speed is 1/200 s. No camera FP mode.
  3. Auto matrix cleaning function.
  4. In RGB view mode bar charts You can view the histogram for any selected image fragment. The same function Nikon D7100.
  5. Auto distortion control for most lenses. This means that the camera automatically removes vignetting and distortion.
  6. Function multiple exposures.
  7. You can program the function button FN on one of the heap of the proposed parameters. I usually program FN to control ISO sensitivity. Instead of ISO control, you can set HDR shooting.
  8. Active D-lighting (has 4 steps of intensity) and noise reduction function at high ISO and slow shutter speeds.
  9. There is even an interval shooting function.
  10. A bunch of presets for shooting. A good menu for processing photos taken.
  11. HDR with different levels, you can set Moderate, Normal, Amplified, Super Amplified and Auto level. The camera takes two pictures in a row and combines them into one. A very useful thing for landscapes. Shooting in HDR with your hands is very bad.
  12. Quiet shooting mode Q. In fact, not so quiet, you can’t remove the sound of the mirror.
  13. The camera has a mechanism for independent control of the mirror and aperture. This allows you to achieve a small shutter lag, the lag (the shutter lag after pressing the shutter button) is only 0.09 seconds. When shooting in Live View, the camera does not lower the mirror, just like Nikon D7100, D600, D800,D800E.
  14. The camera supports remote radio control using the WR-R10 / WR-T10 device. And you can buy a special GPS module GP-1, which will be recorded in EXIF coordinates of the place of shooting.
  15. The camera supports the WU-1a device, which allows you to transfer images using wi-fi to devices running iOS, Android, and also allows you to control the camera remotely using the same devices.
  16. The easiest way to remote control is with an infrared remote control ML-L3.
  17. On the Nikon D5200 body there is a button that is responsible for the shooting mode - you can choose frame-by-frame, continuous slow, continuous fast, self-timer, delay shutter, fast shutter and quiet shooting mode.
  18. More instead of the usual SD cards, you can install a special Eye-Fi card that will transfer JPEG photos via Wi-Fi to a computer or other Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
  19. Can be used camera from the outlet using the EH-5b AC adapter with EP-5A connection.
  20. Auto release function. The self-timer can be set to a series of 9 shots. It is convenient to take self-portraits, especially with a group of people.

Since Nikon D5200 refers to the simplest level of SLR cameras Nikon, then it does not have many functions that are present in more advanced cameras:

  • There is no focus motor, which makes it difficult to use old-cheap lenses, such as Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor.
  • No additional monochrome display
  • There is no button for previewing the depth of field, which is convenient to program for useful functions.
  • There is no second control dial that makes working with the camera easier. Such a disk is available in older models
  • No way to manage flashes remotely, the ability to work with old optics AI-S type
  • There is no way to use the battery pack
  • There is no fine-tuning of focus and a bunch of other little things. Usually all these little things are simply not needed by the amateur photographer, I bring them more to understand the general picture of what you can or cannot expect from the Nikon D5200.

Personal impressions

Brand new Nikon D5200 me liked, all in good style Nikon DX cameras. It’s a pity that with 60i, 50i people are a little fooled. I still use baby Nikon D40, since the availability of video shooting is not especially important for me, but photo quality depends not only on the camera... Usually, an amateur camera is bought for simple home photo tasks, for a seaside vacation or just for an amateur photo. For such tasks on camera, you don't need any super 'bells and whistles'. Therefore, I recommend buying older modelsuch as D5100, D3200 or D3100, and for the money saved, get a lens 18-105VR or 18-200VR... Of course, if funds allow, then D5200 - this is the best amateur camera for spring 2013 (when I wrote this review). You will find recommendations for choosing a camera and lenses here, optionally external flash will find here.

Conclusions

Nikon D5200 is a very good amateur camera, perfect for people who just want a good photo result without any extra effort. On the positive side, I want to note 39-point focus systemquality video 60 with stereo sound recording, rotary display, compactness and ease of operation.

Can I record video with digital zoom?

    • anonym

No. Zoom only for zoom and aiming

  • anonym

Are there programs for recording videos directly to a computer, such as for kenon, such as EOS Camera Movie Record?

  • Oksana

Arkady, is it possible to take high-quality black and white photos on the NIKON D5200?
    Thanks for the reply.

    • Dmitry

      Of course it is possible.
Choose the Monochrome style in the Picture Control menu and voila!

    • Yarkiya

The most correct decision is to shoot in RAW and then process in Photoshop. The Internet is full of lessons on how to work with BW.

Hello! Please help us to identify what is best to take amatours for domestic use: Nikon D5200 kit 18-105mm VR (Lens Nikkor) or Nikon D5200 kit (18-200mm) (lens Sigma AF 18-200mm f / 3.5-6.3 DC OS II )?
    Thank you in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

A difficult philosophical question, I would take a chance and take sigma.

      • Alexander

Thanks for your answer, Arkady! It's just that the difference in price is very insignificant ... so I thought about it)

        • Valery A.

... the "novice amateur photographer for home use" is well suited for the Nikon 18-105 (if he does not want 35 / 1,8G), as it is more reliable, predictable and not bad.

          • Alexander

... "if he doesn't want 35 / 1,8G" - as it will be the first CDC, I don't know if it's worth taking a prime lens with it ... Can I hear your opinion?

            • Valery A.

Well, to understand this - you need to have this and that. At the fix, the picture is a little (or not a little) of better quality, interesting, the stock in the aperture is 1-2 stops - here's the shutter speed 2-4 times shorter, the zoom, of course, very good. it is convenient for choosing focal points, you don't have to run (if you still have somewhere), but the picture is without frills and a bit dark. A fast f / 2,8 zoom somewhat smoothes the problem, but for extra. money. Example: a friend took d5200 + 35 / 1,8G and complains about the lens, took it, checked it at d40x and 5100 is normal, gave him 18-105 for a test, I want it, he says. Gave him 18-55. He shoots, I don't know which one more often, but he wants 18-140 or 18-105. And I took the 35th for myself, finally, from my hands. People, also requirements, vision are different.

Doesn't it really work with the battery pack? They are fully sold on the Internet specifically for d5200.

    • wharfage

      No Native unit from Nikon
But there are a bunch of compatible ones from other manufacturers.
I had one for the D5300, it also works with the younger D5x00, and I tried it with the D3200, but it looks like a non-native on it ...

The second point - there are no compatible battery packs powered by AA (if you dream, then from 18650!;))
The elders have, but D5x00 does not ((

I did not quite understand the idea. In my opinion, a pen is needed for convenience in the first place, and only then to increase the battery capacity. In your case, it would be cheaper to buy an extra battery and charge it at home, rather than carrying a bank and a charger with you. With my acb, the pen capacity will be 10 max, that is, about 10 times more than a regular battery. With other battery capacity can be larger. In any case, you decide.

Hello. There is a suspicion that the camera began to live its own life. Here he is, turned off, on the table. So I take it in my hands and just start twirling it in my hands. The camera starts blinking with the recording diode on the memory card. I put it on the table, blinks again and then dies down. I didn’t notice this before, I carried it in my bag, but today I was hanging around my neck on a single day and noticed that he regularly winks at me. How to deal with this? The Internet doesn't know the answer to my question ...

  • Kirill Yankovsky

I started with the D5200 - and that's what I can say for sure. It has a different matrix in contrast to the D7100. After three years of sitting on the 7100, I still could not get the color 5200. In addition, the 7100 is much noisier, dirty noise climbs on min ISO, the camera's drawing is hard, dry, reportage (even on exotic high-aperture optics). The 5200 has lively colors and richer shades even on the whale 18-55. the drawing is soft, ISO working up to 3200 (for 7100 already 640-1000 on a cloudy day looks terrifying. I think to change to 7200 - they say she has a different matrix than in 7100 - but is it so? Specialists advise - what to take a new 7200 or a used 600 or 800?

    • Alexander

As far as I know, the same Toshiba matrix in 5200 7100 and 7200
      HEZ1 TOS-5105. But different processors.

      • Annatoly

"As far as I know, 5200 7100 and 7200 have the same Toshiba matrix"
No, as far as we know, the 5200 and the 7100 should have one matrix - Toshiba, and the D7200 - another (from Sonya)
But I, too (like the author) doubt very much that the 7100 has a matrix from Toshiba (you cannot confuse it with anything). And the colors of 7200 differ from the 7100 in all examples and the review cardinally - this can be seen (and, by the way, it really looks a little closer to 5200 in the pictures)

    • Annatoly

      Well said.
It's just that my language is removed. (I didn’t read this branch before, or didn’t see anything)
I own both cameras (D5200 and D7100) and subscribe to every word.
Despite assurances that a matrix from D7100 went to D5200 - I can't believe it.
      Completely different pictures. Absolutely.
At the same time, the picture on the D5200 is really much cleaner (the noise on the D7100 is much stronger and appear much earlier). The depth and hue of the color in the D5200 is generally incomparable with anything and in the D7100 an ordinary dry picture.
I also stare at the D7200 - I think to take it in the hope that the colors and quality there will still be much closer to the D5200

  • Christina

    Good afternoon, such a question
I have a Nikon 5200 with a whale lens 18-55, I plan to buy another one, I choose between 35mm 1,8 and 50mm 1,8 which is better? and show if possible examples of photographs of people on these lenses ... will I get at least one such result?
thanks in advance for your reply

    • KalekseyG

This will turn out like this with 35, and if you come closer (chest, front) it will already be bad. With 50, you will have to move a little further from the model. In general, the whale you have with the focal one can figure it out yourself. I took 50 myself - it's not ice with it in the room, but for people it is more functional. And look at the reviews 35 and 50 from Arkady, he will not be offended

      • Christina

        Thanks for the answer

  • Xenia

I have been using the camera for a year, sometimes I think about a camera with a screwdriver ... The only problem with my 5200 is that the exposure does not work! I change the value, but the picture does not change! What do you advise?)

Write with which lens the exposure does not work.

With a 35mm fix and 18-135mm ... yes and with all the rest!

    • KalekseyG

what do the words mean in your understanding: I change the meaning and the picture does not change

      • Xenia

the photo does not get darker or lighter ... maybe I don't understand something?

        • KalekseyG

the meaning of what are you changing? What mode is the device in?

          • Xenia

exposure value, in plus I put or minus. In manual mode!

            • KalekseyG

so what about the exposure correction?

        • KalekseyG

even in M mode, if autoiso is working, when changing the aperture and shutter speed, the camera adjusts the sensitivity and the picture does not change

          • Xenia

            So I can't change the exposure *? I usually don't have an auto ...

            • KalekseyG

In mode A, the compensation changes exposure due to a change in shutter speed, in mode S - due to a change in aperture, and in mode P - all together. In M mode, the correction works by changing the ISO - if Auto ISO is selected on the camera. If Auto ISO is off, exposure compensation will simply not work. At the same time, you can change the values of the exposure compensation, but the exposure itself does not change.
Try to figure it out; it's not at all difficult.

  • SergeyB

In PSA modes, the pressed “+/-” button in combination with the “wheel” changes the exposure compensation, but in the M mode, this combination changes the aperture. That is, there is actually no exposure correction in the M mode. Ksenia, do the exposure meter readings change when you change the parameters?

    • Valery A.

"That is, there is actually no exposure compensation in M mode." - yes, through the information screen menu, but when enabled. auto-iso, if auto-iso is off, then exposure compensation does not work, i.e. everything as comrade Yarkiy said.

  • Dmitriy

Good day! Please explain to a beginner.
Lens 18-105 (whale). Aperture 3,5-5,6 (this is written on the lens itself).
In aperture priority mode, you can spin the wheel up to 32! What does it mean?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The maximum values for the wide and long ends are indicated on the lens. At 18 a maximum of 1: 3.5, at 105 a maximum of 1: 5.6. And the fact that 22 or 32 (closed diaphragms) few people care about.

      • Dmitriy

Then what do these aperture values mean? If with a focal length of 105 mm and mode A, the camera shows the aperture F38 on the display. Is there a physical closure of the petals? Or is it a software adaptation?

        • Arkady Shapoval

This means that shooting will be at F / 38. During shutter release, the aperture blades physically close to this value.

  • Cat pirate

3,5-5,6 is not a range of aperture change, but aperture values for the minimum and maximum focal length, respectively, for a focal length of 18 there will be a minimum value of 3,5 (maximum opening and maximum luminous flux + minimum depth of field of depth of field), and for 105 - 5,6.
Accordingly, 32 is the maximum aperture value (minimum opening and luminous flux) determined by the lens design. As far as I know, it is not written on the lenses and is of little use in practice due to the phenomenon of diffraction, which “eats up” sharpness at such values.

    • Dmitriy

Arcade and Cat Pirate, thank you! Now figured it out.

    My review with Club photo.ru

    1) Color! Impeccable balance and shades
    2) Absolutely accurate and correct BB
    3) Reliability, build quality
    4) Compact, swivel screen (for everybody)
    5) Long battery life
    6) General equipment features for the money, autofocus.
    7) Very low noise for 24mp crop. By this parameter it sets 7100 and 7000
    Weaknesses: 1) No screwdriver
    2) Very easily scratched case, if not black. I had a red one. It was possible to make a colorful rough reliable plastic
    3) The viewfinder is inferior + dirt, hair and dust get inside even with extremely careful use.
    4) Loud, clanging, nasty, cheap shutter sound
    5) Bad video and especially the built-in microphone
    6) No focus adjustment
    Used analogues: 7100
Comment: The Toshiba matrix was placed only on 5200 and 7100. This matrix gives the cleanest, correct, beautiful and accurate color of all CMOS crop combined. From this camera, he began to master the basics of mirror photography, entered the world of creativity. In less than half a year I replaced it with the D7100. Then after 3 years on 7100 I switched to D800 and now I am nostalgic for the 5200 impeccable chic color! I can’t get it in full frame! Compared to 7100, it is sharper, sharper, faster, but the matrix is much noisier. The D5200 has a working ISO even without resizing up to 1600, with resizing and noise reduction 3200 looks good. At 7100, the picture is falling apart from grain and pixel dirt already at 800-1000. After switching to FF, I will take 5200 case again.

    • Denis

weird. 7100 having the same matrix as 5200, gives a picture much worse?

      • Kirill Yankovsky

Their matrices are somewhat different. I wrote here my personal opinion about these cameras. The fact that the 7100 is noisier and grander is definitely not the case. The BB for both is very accurate - but the color is different. 5200 draws softer and warmer, somehow vital. After these cameras, the D800 is just a fierce nightmare with flowers - probably I’ll climb to the crop again ..

        • FED2

the only difference is the absence of a low-pass filter in 7100

        • Annatoly

Another thing that confuses me is
It is stated (and it is well known) that the matrix is the same in the D5200 and D7100 - but for some reason the DRL parameters differ (the dynamic range of the same matrix is different, the color depth is different ...) Why if the matrix is the same, then the properties of the same the same matrix are so different depending on the case in which they are installed?

    • Annatoly

I fully agree with the recall.
The owner of both D5200 and D7100 cameras - I subscribe to every word.
      And there is

      • Valery

Anatoly hello! Happy New Year! I appeal to you as the owner of the d5200. I also bought a d5200 used, with low mileage, everything is ok, but there is one question that bothers me: in the viewfinder when focusing (M, A, S) I see the AF area frame and only one focus point, it doesn’t matter in the settings 9 or 11, or 21, or 39 focus points. And in the instructions in the figure there are 39 of them. Should I see them all 39 or one central ???. Is something wrong with the highlighting of the dots, or is it the way it should be? When focusing in a car, a few are displayed, depending on the number of objects that fell into the viewfinder. The camera focuses, while clearly on all modes. Until I opened the instructions, there were no questions. Please consult.

  • Valera

Does the electronic range finder work with manual glasses (in particular with Helios 81n)? the same question on the previous model D5100?

  • Alena

Hello! But do not tell me, I'm just learning photos. I want to do this professionally, is it still possible to use it (with a good object of course) or is it not suitable for professional photos?

    • Artem

What will you shoot “this”? Because the occupations of "this" are different and this may be suitable, or maybe that one)

  • anonym

    Great camera

  • Eugene

The silent mode mentioned in your articles is not a quiet operation of the shutter, focus motor, but the fact that the camera in this mode does not emit sounds from its speaker, i.e. like mobile in silent mode;)

  • Michael

Already want a D5200. Where to get cheaper and what bells and whistles should I buy?

  • Michael

    I have a D3000, I already want something better.

    • KalekseyG

Then why 5200? The seven thousandth series is a step forward. My first 5200, and now lies, and dabble in 200 and 40.

      • Annatoly

And what's the point of indulging in cameras worse, and the D5200 just lies?

  • Alexander

I have a question on the Nikon D5200 camera: when shooting in video mode, autofocus clicks are recorded, which unpleasantly spoil the video when listening. In the Nikon D5100, when shooting a video, autofocus clicks were not recorded, with the same settings. When autofocus is turned off, sound is recorded normally, but it is inconvenient to manually adjust the focus all the time when the subject is moving. What is it, a defect in my camera, or a lack of a model?

  • anonym

Lost the cover from Nikon D5200, who can tell how many millimeters to buy a new one, I can not understand.

    • Denis

Have you lost the lens cap? Diameter depends on the lens, not the camera

    • Dmitriy

If the cover is from a bayonet, then there it is universal on all Nikon cameras. If from the lens, then the crossed out circle and the number are either 52, 55, 67, etc. on the lens itself.

  • FED2

Hello Arkady! judging by the number of comments, 5200 is very successful!
So I bought it. I started comparing with 5100, with one lens. Pros: Significantly better detail, more precisely white balance, especially for video, in low light (does not go into yellowness, like 5100). If the photo can be corrected during processing, then the video is already finished. a slightly different color profile, I find it difficult to determine which one is prettier? but differ. There were enough focus points at 5100, but the minus is about twice or three times the battery drain faster (I used the same one). The most incomprehensible thing, and nowhere in the internet, which is not encountered when comparing these two "fellows", is that under absolutely identical shooting conditions (lens, distance, exposure), despite the fact that they have the same physical matrix sizes, the same working segments , the D5100 frame contains more of the subject, according to my estimates, about 8-9%, that is, the picture from the 5200 looks slightly cropped. For example, photographing a tape measure, in frame 5100 we see exactly 100 cm, and in frame 5200 - only 92 cm! this fact already contributes to a deceptive improvement in detail, even if the matrices are the same in resolution! It remains a mystery - why such an effect, if the lens gives exactly the same projection onto the matrix? it turns out that the image in the 5200 is sprinkled at the hardware level (as in the video mode in some other models). Without this crop, the detail in 5200 could have been even higher!

  • Still

The video missed a couple of important points.
Quote “It's convenient to shoot video in manual mode with Auto ISO turned on. Attention: during video recording, you cannot change the aperture value at which the video will be shot. "
Auto ISO and video are two incompatible things. Autoiso is good for preliminary “measurement” with subsequent fixation by AE-Lock. Bo imagine. In a medium-lit scene, a person appears with a lantern at an angle directed to the floor or almost into the camera, or just the cloud has gone.
The same goes for autofocus when shooting video. Departure of focus and hello, plan in the trash. And if this is a report, well, generally understandable.
And the aperture is there too, unless you have the ND variable set.
But what's important, the D5200 has pure HDMI without an overlay. That is, you can safely write to the recorder without troubles with hack firmware, as is the case with the D5100.
And the sound…. only for subsequent synchronization.

  • Eugene

Is it possible to turn off the mirror movement (lowering / raising) when shooting in LiveView on the D5200? After each photo in LiveView, I have to wait until the mirror goes down and then rises. Only then the camera is ready for shooting again.

    • Vitaly N

      No.

  • anonym

Hello! sold 5200 and I want to take the system! it became hard to drag)))) who faced the pen8 Olympus? is it worth it to buy?
