Nikon D5200 review

Nikon D5200 review

Nikon D5200 is a very good amateur camera from Nikon. Nikon D2013 is the best for spring 5200 Amateur Nikon DX Camera. This review presents only the camera itself Nikon D5200 body (no specific lens). Nikon D5200 is usually sold with a standard lens like this - Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor, such a set is called 'whale'.

Nikon D5200 can be found in 3 different colors

Nikon D5200 can be found in 3 different colors

Matrix

Nikon D5200 uses the new 24 MP sensor, which allows you to take pictures of 6000 * 4000 pixels (exactly 24 MP). D5200 and D7100most likely using the same sensor, details described here. I do not recommend paying much attention to the number of megapixels, you can read the reasons here here.

24MP sensor allows you to crop (cut out parts of the image) on a computer without a strong loss in quality

The 24-megapixel matrix allows you to crop (cut out parts of the image) on a computer without a strong loss in quality. The photo shows the crop (clipping) from the original image to get a larger bee in the photo.

It is important that Nikon D5200 can use photosensitivity values. ISO 100-6400. The range can be expanded to an ISO HI2 equivalent ISO 25.600... The 'bloated' ISO HI1 and HI2 modes in the camera are more for show than for practical use. You can set the ISO value in 1/3-stop increments, that is, you can set values like ISO 320, 640, 2500, etc. The Nikon D5200 performs well in low light conditions. It is a pity that the ISO 6400 threshold in the new Nikon D5200 has not been raised.

A picture with automatic ISO control, the camera decided to shoot at a value of 110

A picture with automatic ISO control, the camera decided to shoot at a value of 110

Nikon D5200 works well in auto ISO mode - the camera can automatically select the maximum exposure for each individual lens. For example, for a lens with a 70mm focal length, the camera sets a limit excerpts for 1 \ 125 seconds (the average position of the slider when choosing a length excerpts in automatic mode). Auto value excerpts can be made shorter or longer, 5 steps are available. You can set the range of ISO values, for example, from 320 to 6400 units. It's nice that the maximum shutter speed for the Auto ISO function can be set from 1 second to 1/2000 second, this is important when using the telephoto lens. Also, in the automatic ISO sensitivity control mode, you can set the values of Hi1, Hi2 as the maximum ISO value. Why Auto ISO function and how it works, you can read here. In general, the automatic ISO control is implemented very well, this allows you to get pictures without stirring without unnecessary troubles, for example, taking pictures with your hands. Note: as with many other Nikon cameras, ISO control is only available. in shooting modes P, A, S, M.

D5100 and D5200 are very similar to each other.

Focus, exposure metering

Finally, after a long period, a new Multi-CAM 4800DX focusing module from a more advanced model was installed in the amateur camera line Nikon D7000. The number of focus points is 39 pieces, 9 of which are cross-shaped. The same number of focus points Nikon D600. I advise you to read more about the difference in focusing systems. here, but about the focus setting - here. Before amateur level cameras Nikon D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100, D3200 had a focusing system with 11 points or worse, with 5 (Nikon D50) or 3 points (D40, D40x, D60) The Nikon D5200, with its 39 focus points, is a new breakthrough.

Focusing system can be used in a large number of modes:

  • You can choose either 39 focus points or the usual 11
  • You can turn on the electronic rangefinder, which will prompt in manual focus mode where to rotate the focus ring of the lens.
  • You can choose a bunch of different modes of the focus system, from focusing on a single point, to 3D tracking an object in the frame. All modes are illustrated with relevant examples, a beginner will not be able to get confused in the web of the menu :)
  • In Live View, you can choose from 4 types of focusing system: 1 - Face-priority AF, 2 - Wide-area AF, 3 - Normal-area AF, 4 - Subject-tracking AF.
  • You can select the priority of the focus mode for AF-C... In priority 'release' mode, the camera obediently takes pictures in any situation.

exposure measured with 2016-pixel RGB sensor. Since release Nikon D50 in 2005, Nikon used 8 years on its amateur cameras 420-segment metering, the new Nikon D5200 also made a breakthrough in this regard, taking Nikon amateur cameras to a new level. Auto focus is closely related to metering sensor exposure, the latter can recognize recorded scenes and improve auto focus. Exactly such a sensor is used by such advanced cameras as Nikon D600, D7100, D7000.

By the way, the camera uses as an optical viewfinder pentaser mirror with 95% field of view coverage and 0.78x magnification.

Photography Speed Buffer

Nikon D5200 is Nikon's fastest amateur camera, it can shoot at the speed 5 frames per second. Performance Nikon D5200 almost the same as Nikon D3x. As many as 5 frames per second is a very good indicator. For example, the nominal speed Nikon D7100 is 6 frames per second, and the predecessor Nikon D5100 could shoot at a speed of 4 frames per second. The camera has an Expeed 3 processor, the same as Nikon D7100, D600, D800, D800E and Nikon D4. It seemed very strange to me that an image processing system, like the flagship model, was installed in an amateur Nikon D5200 camera Nikon D4... Because of this, nothing 'slows down' in Nikon D5200, the camera reacts very well to all settings changes.

Example photo on Nikon D5200

Example photo on Nikon D5200 and high ISO

JPEG L Fine files weigh an average of 8 to 15 MB. RAW files weigh on average 30 Mb each. For large files, you should invest in high-capacity memory cards. Nikon D5200 uses SD (HC, XC, UHS-I) memory cards. The Nikon D5200 uses NEF (RAW) files with 14-bit color depth.

The buffer contains:

  • 3 JPEG pictures in L size, Fine quality with all advanced settings enabled. In fact, the camera takes 4-5 pictures until it starts to slow down.
  • 11 JPEG pictures in L size, Fine quality with all advanced settings turned off.
  • 7 shots in RAW with all advanced settings turned off.
  • only 2 pictures in RAW or RAW + JPEG with all advanced settings enabled.

7 shots in RAW is not enough, at 5 frames per second the buffer is enough for less than 2 seconds of continuous shooting. By the way, I noticed one interesting feature, when using lenses without a focus motor on the Nikon D5200, the 'Aut. distortion control 'does not work.

Display. Video.

Nikon D5200 has 3-inch swivel large display  and 921.000 points. The display is the same as Nikon D5100. You can view photos and videos via HDMI using a Type C HDMI cable. There is no cable in the box.

The camera supports video quality of 1920 x 1080 60i, H.264 / MPEG-4 is written in the '.MOV' file format. Attention: to shoot in 60i you need to set NTSC mode in the menu. I couldn’t find these same 60i for an hour, as in Pal mode only 50i is available.

If you don't need a bunch of heavy video files, you can take advantage of the lower image quality - 1280 x 720 or 640 x 424. You can choose high or normal video quality. Nikon D5200 already has built-in stereo microphone. In focus mode AF-F continuous tracking focus is available when shooting video... AF-F focus mode must be set using the 'I' button while Live View is on. The focusing work when shooting video is not happy - this is a common problem for SLR cameras. To shoot video, you need to turn on Live View using a special lever, and only then press the red button to start recording video. You cannot immediately start recording a video by pressing a single button.

Example photo on Nikon D5200

Example photo on Nikon D5200

If you allow manual video settings, then in the manual camera control mode 'M', shooting video with manual control is available excerpts and ISO. Exposure can be set from 1 \ 60 (or 1 \ 30) to 1 \ 4000 seconds. When shooting video, you can immediately change the ISO value, it is very convenient to program the Fn button for ISO control for this. It is convenient to shoot video in manual mode with the Auto ISO function turned on.  Attention: during video recording, you cannot change the aperture value on which the video will be shot.

And now what very annoying when shooting 60i or 50i video. When you start shooting video, the camera does a light crop. For example, if you need to shoot a video using a 10 mm focal length lens, then there will be problems. The camera will simply turn on its crop mode. This is something similar to the 1.3 x y shooting mode Nikon D7100but it's not clear what kind of crop Nikon D5200 uses for 60i and 50i. They say it is used 1.25 x crop image. On the official website it is written about it casually or not at all. Deceiving people is not good :) In other modes, such as 1920 x 1080 30p, there is no such strange camera behavior.

Housing and management

The case is made of plastic. The camera is well-assembled, as you would expect. My copy of Nikon D5200 Made in Thailand. Due to the rotatable display, the camera does not have a button block to the left of the display, therefore the camera is more designed for controlling with one right hand. The D5200 display can be closed back and forth; in this position, it cannot be damaged during transportation. The camera menu is quite simple, there are tips everywhere. It will be easier for a beginner to understand the basic settings. I liked the INFO button menu, where excerpt and ISO are shown on the background of round control dials, as on old film cameras, while the discs are animated and rotate depending on exposure.

Externally, the Nikon D5200 camera is very similar to Nikon D5100. Nikon D5200 uses battery EN-EL14exactly the same as Nikon D3200, D5100 и D3100. Managing the camera is easy.

Sample photos:

Photos without processing. Photos taken in VI, PO, JPEG (L, Fine) mode. Reduced size to 3 MP and imprinted data from EXIF. Everything is filmed on Nikon 70-210mm и Nikon 18-70mm

Features and useful features

  1. Exposure varies from 30s to 1/4000 seconds
  2. The minimum flash sync speed is 1/200 s. No camera FP mode.
  3. Auto matrix cleaning function.
  4. In RGB view mode bar charts You can view the histogram for any selected image fragment. The same function Nikon D7100.
  5. Auto distortion control for most lenses. This means that the camera automatically removes vignetting and distortion.
  6. Function multiple exposures.
  7. You can program the function button FN on one of the heap of the proposed parameters. I usually program FN to control ISO sensitivity. Instead of ISO control, you can set HDR shooting.
  8. Active D-lighting (has 4 steps of intensity) and noise reduction function at high ISO and slow shutter speeds.
  9. There is even an interval shooting function.
  10. A bunch of presets for shooting. A good menu for processing photos taken.
  11. HDR with different levels, you can set Moderate, Normal, Amplified, Super Amplified and Auto level. The camera takes two pictures in a row and combines them into one. A very useful thing for landscapes. Shooting in HDR with your hands is very bad.
  12. Quiet shooting mode Q. In fact, not so quiet, you can’t remove the sound of the mirror.
  13. The camera has a mechanism for independent control of the mirror and aperture. This allows you to achieve a small shutter lag, the lag (the shutter lag after pressing the shutter button) is only 0.09 seconds. When shooting in Live View, the camera does not lower the mirror, just like Nikon D7100, D600, D800,D800E.
  14. The camera supports remote radio control using the WR-R10 / WR-T10 device. And you can buy a special GPS module GP-1, which will be recorded in EXIF coordinates of the place of shooting.
  15. The camera supports the WU-1a device, which allows you to transfer images using wi-fi to devices running iOS, Android, and also allows you to control the camera remotely using the same devices.
  16. The easiest way to remote control is with an infrared remote control ML-L3.
  17. On the Nikon D5200 body there is a button that is responsible for the shooting mode - you can choose frame-by-frame, continuous slow, continuous fast, self-timer, delay shutter, fast shutter and quiet shooting mode.
  18. More instead of the usual SD cards, you can install a special Eye-Fi card that will transfer JPEG photos via Wi-Fi to a computer or other Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
  19. Can be used camera from the outlet using the EH-5b AC adapter with EP-5A connection.
  20. Auto release function. The self-timer can be set to a series of 9 shots. It is convenient to take self-portraits, especially with a group of people.

Since Nikon D5200 refers to the simplest level of SLR cameras Nikon, then it does not have many functions that are present in more advanced cameras:

  • There is no focus motor, which makes it difficult to use old-cheap lenses, such as Nikon 50mm f / 1.8D AF Nikkor.
  • No additional monochrome display
  • There is no button for previewing the depth of field, which is convenient to program for useful functions.
  • There is no second control dial that makes working with the camera easier. Such a disk is available in older models
  • No way to manage flashes remotely, the ability to work with old optics AI-S type
  • There is no way to use the battery pack
  • There is no fine-tuning of focus and a bunch of other little things. Usually all these little things are simply not needed by the amateur photographer, I bring them more to understand the general picture of what you can or cannot expect from the Nikon D5200.

Personal impressions

Brand new Nikon D5200 me liked, all in good style Nikon DX cameras. It’s a pity that with 60i, 50i people are a little fooled. I still use baby Nikon D40, since the availability of video shooting is not especially important for me, but photo quality depends not only on the camera... Usually, an amateur camera is bought for simple home photo tasks, for a seaside vacation or just for an amateur photo. For such tasks on camera, you don't need any super 'bells and whistles'. Therefore, I recommend buying older modelsuch as D5100, D3200 or D3100, and for the money saved, get a lens 18-105VR or 18-200VR... Of course, if funds allow, then D5200 - this is the best amateur camera for spring 2013 (when I wrote this review). You will find recommendations for choosing a camera and lenses here, optionally external flash will find here.

Conclusions

Nikon D5200 is a very good amateur camera, perfect for people who just want a good photo result without any extra effort. On the positive side, I want to note 39-point focus systemquality video 60 with stereo sound recording, rotary display, compactness and ease of operation.

  • Sasha

Please tell me in this review it is written that the camera uses a pentamirror as an optical viewfinder with 95% coverage of the field of view and 0.78x magnification.
About the d3100 they write: diopter correction of the viewfinder is only up to -1,7 diopters, for whom poor eyesight will not see a clear picture. Which one is better for me if I have myopia -2?
Which option will you advise me, adjusted for my vision. I consider from 3100, 3200 ken 1100 to 5200. Thanks in advance.

    • Lynx

Just take off with glasses or with lenses, and you won’t need all this correction adjusted on the viewfinder.
Again, the accuracy of the viewfinder is important if you will shoot with manual lenses, and with “autofocus” the camera will focus properly without your pros and cons with diopters, and in the viewfinder you just need to monitor the composition of the frame.

      • anonym

        Thanks for the advice

  • Karina

Good day. Please help with a choice. I really liked the Nikon D5200 camera, but nowhere can I find information on how it will behave in a humid climate. The camera is needed mainly for traveling, I love the countries of Asia, but the climate there is very humid and most of the equipment can’t stand it. Tell me please, should I take 5200 or still look at cameras that have a moisture-proof housing? But as I understand it, only with cameras like the d300? d300s. At d7000 the case is not completely waterproof.

    • Lynx

I, of course, am not quite good at this issue, but "moisture protection" rather means protection from rain, drops, splashes of water and the like during the period of direct shooting, than from the actual constant high humidity.
Perhaps a convenient transparent, impenetrable box for d5200 (some kind of "for diving"), in which she will be constantly, except for short periods of "taking out the flash card in the dry air-conditioned hotel air" will solve your problem much better than buying an expensive and heavy "waterproof cameras ”.

  • anonym

Arkady, when you talk about the d5300 mentioned in the review, you say that the matrices 7100 and 5200 are the same as on the 5300. But, on the 7100 and 5300, the matrix does not have a low-pass filter, but on the 5200 it is. The sharpness of the photo and the study of small details because of this is 7100 and 5300 higher. This, I think, is an essential point.

  • Nicholas

Hello! You write that you cannot install a battery pack on the 5200. Isn't it suitable from 5100?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I have not tried, I can not tell. But the instruction to the d5200 generally does not say anywhere about the batlock, you can use only an additional borehole from the rosette. But I'm sure that the d5100 buttlock should work.

      • Nicholas

Thanks for the answer! I will try. Moreover, I have already ordered a batlock with ebay. And there the Chinese write that it’s just for 5200. Well, then they are the Chinese.

        • Homer

So in fact it is designed for only 2 batteries ... And why is it needed then? I've taken a second Akum and I'm not worried

    • Alexander

      fits i took MB D 51 for d 5200 and everything fits

  • Ilya

Dear author! I was about to purchase a d5200, but after reading the article and comments, I now thought about it. d5100 is better? But I saw the pictures taken on the d5100 and to be honest, all the pictures are obtained with a green tint. That is, with the color d5100 lies.
I consider only from these two cameras. Do not let me make the wrong choice. d5100 or d5200?

    • Neofot

Undoubtedly 5200. He writes video with stereo sound. And taking a family photo, and want a video. And he shoots a gorgeous video, and even with stereo sound.

  • Maria

Good day! Thanks for the review. Please tell me which telephoto lens to choose for the D5200?

  • Elena

    Hello! Thanks for the review!
My question is this: I need a camera mainly for photographing my dachshunds in motion, on the street and without a tripod. Will I get a decent picture or is it better to look for another camera for this purpose?
    Thank you!

    • Lynx

In principle, I happened to photograph a pack of puppies on D3100 + 35 / 1,8g, and D3100 + Jupiter 37AM, so the D5200 will completely pull it.
You rather (and more importantly) need a fairly fast focusing fast lens, such as a tamron 17-50 / 2,8 or Nikon's 50 / 1,8g (but it essno without zoom)
Another thing is that taking pictures of active dogs is an extremely difficult task in itself, it requires experience, and often assistants. From my last such filming - from 500-700 frames with a dozen running dogs, about 20-30 pictures came out “really good”.
Of course, you can look at the D300 / d300s as a “reportage” camera with “fast and tenacious focusing”, but their weight is the same as that of two D5200s.

  • Ilya

Congratulate me. I purchased the d5200. A bunch of impressions. I realized that I did not know how to take pictures at all (this is after a soap dish). I will master this miracle technique.

  • Vlad

    I want to buy a camera from a Canon 700D_18-135 or Nikon D5200_18-105, but I can’t decide

both cameras are good, there are both + and -
    advise what to take

    • Denis

It is better to pick up both in the store and decide on this ... They are almost identical in their technical characteristics.

  • Elena

    I have a question.
When I photograph everything is fine, but sometimes when I press the shutter, it just doesn’t want to photograph ..
I hold the camera in the same position in which he took the last time
    Why is this happening?
This bothers me a lot, because this is my first camera.

    • Lynx

If you shoot in automatic shooting mode (and most likely in modes in which the flash is disabled - such as "sports" or "flash disable"), then the camera simply does not have enough illumination to get any high-quality picture and the automatic blocking the shutter release.
Switch the camera to “green mode” - auto, then it will raise the flash itself as needed and take a picture, or learn to use semi-automatic modes.
Oh yes, the camera still refuses to shoot in the absence or malfunction of a flash card.

  • Vasyl

I have two cameras D5200 and D7100 (one for my daughter, one for me) from the photo you can’t say that there is a difference. D5200 has less noise. D7100 is certainly more interesting very good focus, excellent management. fit all lenses, the ability to correct the focus on each lens separately (keeps in memory), two memory cards, the battery can withstand up to 1000 photos. I installed a battery unit from the D5200 on the D3100, although I had to file a little file on the bottom of the ledge on the battery unit.

    • Sergei

      Hello Vasyl!

Do I understand correctly that to install the battery pack you need to remove the battery cover?
I can not understand how it is removed.
      I have a D5300, it's almost like a D5200.

      • anonym

at 45 degrees open and take out everything is in the instructions

  • quickvox

So I can’t understand why the author clicks on 39 point autofocus. Well, is it really such an important utility?
I myself use only center autofocus, since the more points the camera uses, the more difficult it is to sharpen the desired objects.
and yes, the D5200 is a super camera. I shot the child’s face in daylight, even dust particles from hairs on my face are visible)

  • Vladimir

Good health to you, Arkady. Can you please tell me how to set the self-timer for a series of 9 shots. (This is written in this article of yours, in the "Features and useful functions" section). I tried it, nothing works.

If the reset function did not help, you will still have to manually return some settings. Try first setting the TTL value for the built-in flash in the menu.

Good afternoon, tell me who knows, I have a D5200 with a VR 18-55 kit, I began to notice that when photographing indoors, even with a flash, there is no clarity in the photo, it is very grainy and this is about ISO 100-800 (I set it up like that). Is it due to the resolution of the lens or a huge 24 megapixel sensor? Or is there any other objective reason?

  • anonymous

Is the D5200 better than the d7000?

  • Jury

Hello everyone! I recently bought a D5200, after about a week ... he was shaking my photos either whitening or darkening ... ..what could it be? Considering the fact that no mechanical damage was inflicted on it?

  • Alexander

Yuri, and in what mode are you shooting? This is something with exposure metering, overexposure and underexposure is obtained from you.

  • Homer

Hello, I really do not like the sound on the video from this unit. With any video and built-in microphone settings, the background noise is very clearly audible in the recording - it is already enraging! Tell me is this one for me or is there such a problem?

Hello, I have a question. I bought d5200 the other day because I travel all the time and I want to snap more bright pictures with my family. bought it because of 39 focus points. but what I don’t understand is that when I focus, it shows only 1 point and in 99% of cases it is not on the face, even if this face is close-up against the wall, that is, the focus is on a plain T-shirt (?!), or sometimes on a person at 10 km can be seen better than my husband who is 3m away from me. where are these 39 points and how can I stop wasting my nerves on every photo because focus on the face appears extremely rarely? (((help pliz advice

read the instructions on how to select focus points and how to turn off “automatic” focus selection.

      • Stacey

        thanks for the answer!
I wrote after reading the instructions. I understand that 39 points are used only for a moving object. for a stationary (ordinary photo for memory) only 1 point is used. I tried in “P” to include all focusing modes and AF area modes. I also tested exposure metering, I can not find an adequate solution for this camera. I re-read this forum and many others, but I still did not find a solution how to make photo norms (because it focuses anywhere), but what's the point of a fotik if I need to manually set 1 point ...

        • Lynx

how do you want the camera to decide for you what to focus on when reading thoughts? How many for 20 thousand? )))
the photographer ALWAYS chooses the point on which to focus, otherwise it is better to buy a soap dish with “smile detection function”
You can disable 3D tracking, and then the points will not be clicked.
In general, read articles here about focusing and shooting, or sell 5200 and buy a soap dish if you do not want to learn how to shoot with a SLR.

          • Moses (not the one)

            Above one year (no, no, sir!) I posted about D7100 - I bought myself a D5200 for my daughter (a moon miner-Stakanovite?), Here m. (No-no, madam) - I bought D5200, but for a $ 5 I didn’t take a single correct photo ...
Well, why is it that’s going on with this. (so-so!) the light disappears ?!

  • Alexander

To shoot a non-live subject (husband), set, say, in mode A, (aperture priority) AF-S focus mode and single-point AF area mode, and you can also set spot exposure metering. When focusing, you can choose from the 39 points available in the field finder for focusing - one where you need it, moving it with the joystick to the place where you want to focus.

    • Stacey

thanks. so do it. it simply means that I didn’t understand correctly 39 focus points) I thought that almost the whole photo would be in focus and bought a camera))) thanks for the answers, I will adapt!

      • Alexander

The main thing is to carefully read the instructions and more practice and everything will come!

        • Stacey

today we took a lot of pictures in the “P” mode, specially choosing 1 focus point. in the end, the pictures are all without quality. the car generally catches the focus, it is not clear why ... this is the first time since my fotik, before that there were different nikons, but they didn't get up to this (((

          • Alexander

It’s strange. And pictures without quality is how to understand? No sharpness? That is, you focus on the subject at one point, press the shutter, and the focus in front of or behind the subject? Then most likely you have a back-front focus on the lens.

        • Stacey

when in the “A” mode it is just the focus “in front of or behind the object”, and in the “P” mode yesterday there was simply no quality in the whole photo, that is, there was no clarity anywhere. although there was always a dot on the face.

          • Alexander

Well then, it’s sure that the back-front is obtained, although it should appear in all modes. What is your lens? Did you buy a camera with him?

        • Stacey

Kitovsky, yes, I bought it with a camera. and immediately there were such "cool" pictures .. it is called changed the camera to take pictures normally, but now I do not know what to do with it so that at least 1 picture of the norms came out. tried all the settings, why doesn't it focus on the face - no idea ...

          • Alexander

That is, with single-point AF, do you focus on the person’s face at one point, but the focus nevertheless appears in another place? Well then, it’s for sure a back-front, only usually if a carcass with a lens is sold together, they are aligned for each other, but although everything can be in our country))) Maybe one of your friends has a Nikon lens, attach it to your carcass and try to shoot . Here you can see about the back-front check and print the table http://www.videozona.ru/photo_tests/Reviews/ChdLens/ChdLens_page00.asp

        • Stacey

so that's just the point that I bought in Panama) much more expensive than in our state, but there was just an urgent need for a new fotik. with one point and focusing on the face, there is no focus at all in the photo, if with the automatic machine it is at least somewhere this quality, but with 1 point on "P" it is completely absent ... now I will test the lenses and the plate. Thank you so much for the advice!

          • Alexander

Try a different lens if you have anyone to take. On NG pictures turned out?

        • Moses (not the Nashen one)

Something is not a word in the reviews about the durability of the models D5100 and 5200 and, for example, 7000 (compare).

  • Alexander

    when will the D5300 review
