Overview of Jupiter-8 2/50

Jupiter-8 is an interesting lens with an amazing picture. Jupiter 8 is very well written on the site of Sergei Elizarov.

The focusing of the lens is smooth. The focusing ring rotates 180 degrees, the front lens does not rotate when focusing. The lens itself is very small. Its shiny white metal frame looks very unusual on modern digital cameras. There is a modification of the lens in a black frame of the body, as well as a modification with a Kontax-Kiev mount. You can see what the 'P' version looks like Jupiter-8 1: 2 F = 5cm P. There is also a similar lens, but with a larger aperture - Jupiter 3.

The diaphragm has 9 blades. The iris control ring rotates smoothly, without stopping at fixed values. At closed aperture values, the lens gives almost even circles in the blur zone.

It’s a pity, I don’t have the opportunity to use Jupiter-8 2/50 on mirrorless cameras. On SLR cameras Jupiter-8 2/50 works only in macro mode, in more detail here. How to use Soviet old lenses on modern Nikon cameras read here, and on Canon here. I shot on Canon 350D and two adapters M39-M42 + M42-Canon EOS.

After I crawled on my knees near the first spring flowers and transferred the photo to a computer, I was shocked by the unusual picture of this lens. The lens has amazing bokeh. On F / 2.0, weak sharpness and strong aberrations, this allows you to convey unusual volume, style and artistic content in photographs.

The history of my copy from the owner of the lens:

The lens has a slightly tired look. He had a very rich past. Its previous owner, with the Zorkiy-4 camera, was, and now alive and nimble, my grandfather, a former investigator in especially important cases of any very criminal kind. The lens had to see such that we mere mortals and think terribly. Where only he was not and where only he was not worn. From the 64th to the 84th they used it regularly. He never saw the hands of a master and prevention. But for the entire time of its operation, he was treated very carefully! But time has taken its toll. Shutenko Andrey.

Review Addendum

I came across another copy, this time with a name in Latin - Jupiter-8 2/50... Externally, the lenses are identical. Photos taken with Nikon 1 J1, With EGF lens is 135mm (sounds scary).

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with an M39 thread (for rangefinder cameras, M39 X 1/28.8), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this you just need to choose the right adapter (adapter). There is no need to carry out any additional actions to remake the lens. The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha need here is an adapter M39 -Sony E (aka L39 -Sony Nex).
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) need here is an adapter M39-Micro 4/3.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need here is such an adapter M39-Canon M.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need here is such an adapter M39-Canon R.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need here is such an adapter M39-Nikon 1.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) needed here is such an adapter M39-Nikon Z.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need here is such an adapter M39-Fuji X.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need here is such an adapter M39-Fuji GFX.
  9. SAMSUNG: NX mount cameras require here is an adapter M39-Samsung NX. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount need here is such an adapter M39-Leica L.
  11. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need here is an adapter M39-L / M.

It's important: for SLR cameras, only macro mode is possible (can only shoot at very close focusing distances).

For SLR cameras (macro mode only)

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need here is an adapter M39 -Canon EOS.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with Nikon F mount needed here is such an adapter M39 -Nikon F (some cameras will only work in M-mode).
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax K-mount cameras, you need here is such an adapter M39 -Pentax K.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony/Minolta A mount, you need here is an adapter M39 -Sony A.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with 4/3 mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) here is an adapter M39 -4/3.

Conclusions

Jupiter-8 2/50 is a very interesting and well-made rangefinder lens. Will work best on mirrorless cameras. On SLR cameras it can only work in macro mode. The lens has a very specific bokeh. I recommend it for creative experiments.

By the way. If there is no "round timber", you can carve adapters from "pancakes". There is enough thickness of 10 mm. Cut a suitable piece from the "sheet" of brass, and go. The turner knows how to work with it. Or you can try it yourself, though you have to work, and even look for a tap. Just take the “Ballerina” (this is such a “nozzle” device for a drill), mark it up, drill with a small drill. It will be more convenient to use two drills with ballerinas, and process it one by one, slowly, a little at a time. And you will get a ring. But in general, from the beginning you need to make a pancake, fix it on the axis (bolt, hairpin), insert it into the drill, and with a file grind the corresponding groove, and only then embed the ring. As you can see, it is easier to find a turner. And turning has an undeniable advantage. Here the ring will be automatically centered, since it is turned, and not stamped, as is done in production. A shifted optical axis, will inevitably introduce distortions.

Good day to all. Here everyone writes that on the mirrors, it will work only as a macro. So, if I put through two adapters M 39-M42 + M-42 with a lens, in theory should I focus on infinity ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

There will be no infinity. It will only be macro, even with a lens.

      • Paul

Thank you, alas alas ..) So the inheritance of the old-timer will be with macro rings for macro photography to establish.

  • Murad

Please tell me the link to aliexpress on the adapter from the F mount to this lens and Jupiter-8m. Thanks! D5300 Camera

    • B. R. P.

These lenses are rangefinder and will work on a DSLR only in macro mode.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Link. But this is a rangefinder lens, there will be only macro mode.

  • Gennady

Arkady, tell me please, when shooting with Nikon1 + Jupiter8, you have a peasant with pigeons in focus, but he only takes photos of me, doesn’t take any further, what adapters were there? Or is there a problem in the lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Simple M39-Nikon 1 adapter, it can also be called L39-Nikon 1, this

  • Gennady

Clearly, thanks, I used the M39-M42 + M42-N1, which is probably why the distance to the matrix is large, your adapter has less thickness. Was there infinity?

  • Death_upset

I found here the adapter m39-fuji x, put this miracle on my X-E1 and was simply surprised. Despite the dust inside, the scratched enlightenment and the front lens are not in the best condition, this lens is capable of producing a very atmospheric picture. if you climb in the lightroom, you can muddle such a retrovave, the buzz is simple. on f8 is quite clear, compared with AF Nikkor 35-70 f3.3-4.5, it doesn’t lose at least in clarity, but there are highlights in places with bright backlight (maybe because of the front lens just right)
in general, there’s probably no reason to buy it, only if you don’t feel sorry for the money and you want something experimental, and if you have it from your grandmother / grandfather / father / mother, then you simply have to get the adapter and try to shoot it

  • ba3lur

for a long time aliexpress stamps adapter M39-Nikon

    • BB

Have you read the article at all? About the working segment, in particular?

      • Arkady Shapoval

in fact, there is the L39-Nikon F, but what to put in there, the mirror 39 or mirrorless (there will only be a macro) is another question :)

        • BB

It is also possible through M39-> M42; M42-> Nikon_F, but you won't be able to take advantage of all the advantages of the lens)

  • Marina

Thanks for the review, but I didn’t understand why fifty dollars, but focuses only in macro)

  • Eugene

Hello. Thanks for your reviews, they inspired me to experiment. While I choose Fujifilm x-t100 lenses for my mirrorless, I decided to test Jupiter-8, which was idle. So far, only test shots, the first day, but I'm already delighted with the bokeh.

  • Leonid

Arkady! How will this lens work on nex? Will there be infinity through the transition rings?

    • Arkady Shapoval

yes, it will be like an ordinary fifty dollars of a past era

    • Anatoly

Without a limb it will definitely be.

  • Stas

    Does he fit the fed?

    • Andrei

Does the rangefinder lens match the rangefinder camera? Hmmm, I need to think ...

    • B. R. P.

      Suitable for carving.

  • Anatoly

Hello. I recently bought Jupiter-8 1950 by mail. with ears? Is there any hope that there is a Zeiss lens unit?

    • Rodion

Of course not. Jupiter-8 is already a product of conversion to Soviet glass. You can still try to speculate with the ZK, nothing more

  • Anatoly

Thank you Rodion. Then this is the very first of the Jupiters-8 turns out? Which I met under this brand of Soviet glass)))))

  • Denis

I do not know how he rhodolite on mirrorless cameras, but on my Samsung nx2000 it works like a macro.

    • Denis

I am adding a comment. Prior to that, I used it through a standard nx-m42 adapter, after screwing the m39-m42 ring on the lens to the sky and got a macro. later I ordered an nx-m39 adapter from smiling rice-eaters and as a result I got a luxurious picture in the sonnar style, since there is something to compare with. In the arsenal there is a sonnar 3,5 / 135. Clean, bright bokeh background, I don’t know who says what, but even on an open hole, good sharpness. In general, it is much more interesting than Helios.

  • Denis

On the mirrorless Samsung nx2000 also works as a macro.

  • Vladimir

    Hello!
I bought the Jupiter 8 lens the other day. Upon closer examination, it turned out that it has TWO AIRPHRAGMS 2.8 !! One, as expected, after 2, and the second after 4. Where it should have been 5.6!
Maybe someone knows about this engraving error?

    Sincerely.

    • Joe

      _First_ designation 2,8 = 1 * 2,8 = 2,8
      _Second_ designation 2,8 = 2 * 2,8 = 5,6
And where do you see the error here?

      • Vladimir

        Really…

  • Vladimir

this is what it looks like.

    • Rodion

Now, if the diaphragm, when moving to the second mark, began to open back to 2.8, it would be cool))))

      • Vladimir

        Exactly!

  • Vladimir

    at full aperture

  • Novel

For the sake of curiosity, I purchased this lens complete with a Zorkiy-4 camera, both of which were made in 1960, for only 500 rubles. There is a fungus in the lens, there are micro-scratches on the front lens, but I tested it without prophylaxis with the Sony NEX-6. My copy turned out to be not successful, practical at any aperture is only suitable for lomography and other highly creative activities.

    • Dmitry Kostin

Is the contrast lost in the photo and is there a glow all over the frame?
      Fungus eats contrast.
If it is not very neglected, then you can try to get rid of it and cure the glass. It is better not to buy lenses with a fungus.

      • Novel

Already done preventive maintenance. I changed the lubricant, cleaned the lenses with isopropyl alcohol, removed the fungus (mold), though, along with the enlightenment on the rear group of lenses😳. I tested again on f2 and 2,8 soapy, but then there is no point, since Industar-61 is 2,8 better. I'll try, of course, in the afternoon, on the street, perhaps it will be more interesting.

  • Eugen

I live! And can I work normally from the Vigilant First Wines?

    • Rodion

Yes, it can work. The only thing is that the rangefinder may need to be adjusted.
