What to do with a cool camera

This post is highly subjective. Be aware of this information.

What to do?

What to do with a cool SLR?

Today, the availability of good cameras is simply scary. Amateur tricked-in super camera can practically afford every schoolboy. For a couple of hundred cu You can get just the exorbitant quality of the photo.

A person often does not know why he needs a camera and what to do with it. Often, a very expensive camera is bought with the hope that a good shot make the camera itself without human intervention. This is not true. The camera does nothing by itself, and a good shot requires sweat, blood, ideas, a shooting plan, time and skill. Moreover, you need to be able to realize the potential of a 'cool' camera, but in order to be with the camera on you you need a lot of practice.

Nowadays a lot of people are 'learning' to photograph by sitting their pants on the pages of websites on the Internet, my Radozhiva is no exception. I see a tendency on my website that after buying a camera, the first question is' what lens / trinket / flash / rattle 'to buy for the camera, instead of the question'how to learn to take pictures well'. This is due to the fact that people manic convincedthat it is precisely technique that is the most important decisive factor in creating a good photograph - and they are right, but to be able to handle such a technique takes mountains of experience. And experience can only be obtained in one way - study, go and take pictures. Taking pictures and taking pictures again, this is not the time of the film, you can learn very quickly on unsuccessful bumpy photos.

An example from my personal life: if I buy myself a cool racing car now, I will crash at the first corner. The same applies to photographic equipment, if a novice photographer or an ordinary amateur photographer buys a super-fancy camera, then the very first pictures can be sent to the basket, because fancy cameras do not have fully automatic modes'Me and my pet'.

For more or less decent camera control, an understanding of the principles and fundamentals of photography and photographic equipment, for general development in general, I recommend invest in photo courses, or a printed version of a book from a photograph... I do not advertise any photography school or books, I absolutely do not care what you read or where you study - the only question is what to do with your own education necessary. I emphasize that the book should be in the printed version, for the printed version you will have to give your "hard-earned" money, this will be a good reason to read it. Free photo books in electronic form are suitable only for really interested photo enthusiasts. The same goes for courses. You have to pay for the acquisition of skills, whether it's your own time spent on thoughtful study of some issue, whether it's listening to a lecture in a photography school.

A 'cool' camera needs a 'cool' photographer. And there are no cool ones, there are trained ones :)

Conclusions:

Believe me, good photographic equipment comes only to those who know how to use it. You need to be ready to work with a 'cool' camera, otherwise there will be too few good shots. It is foolish to spend precious time thinking about buying another high-aperture fix - it is better to invest all free energy in personal skillsown development. Instead of buying an expensive camera, it’s better to buy a cheaper camera, and with the money you save, do any kind of development in your photo.

Do not forget to press the buttons social networks Thank you for attention. Arkady Shapoval.

but still a list of books recommended for study - I would very much like to!
because now there are a lot of things “how to learn how to take pictures of advice from a famous photographer !! 111” and often with quite “abstruse” names, and you don’t always understand either a really useful and thoughtful book, or garbage like “a lot of beautiful pictures on the example of which we tried explain what composition is. "
They gave me three books on DR, completely different. One, as it turned out, “for a reason, but for lomography,” I read with interest, although “to include the brain in the logic and attitude of a lomographer” is far from always possible. ))) But they will try to learn “a peculiar look at the photo” - it was very informative.
The second one - “composition in a photo” - I read, but often I was not interested, the book, although very beautifully designed, turned out to be not very informative, much more work was spent on beautiful pictures than on explaining what's what. It was useful, but I had to dig it up. In this regard, the old, black and white, Soviet “composition in photography” turned out to be much more complete in terms of the principles and knowledge outlined (as well as diagrams and all kinds of schemes).
From the third, something like “taking pictures of nude” just vomited, more the feeling remained more like “a manual for the removal of Dutch-German porn”. "Pichal to take pictures"! ((

Old Soviet books are very good.

  • Vasily I.

I wrote everything correctly - study, not buy cameras

  • Ivan

An indisputable fact. ) Himself personally - began to understand terms, concepts, etc. after the Soviet lens was attached to the D40. And with what sadness I look after the Soviet lens at the "whale" one.

    • Voffka

That's right, I would say this is a very good way to understand what and how it works. And you understand everything much faster than on the "whale". I myself was confused for a long time in terms and their work, but after I attached the Soviet optics it became clearer and figured out faster.))

All right! I agree to all 100%! No options!

A lot depends on the enthusiasm of the photographer. A truly enthusiastic person will outgrow an amateur crop DSLR in six months. And where to put it then? Of course, it is stupid to buy a top-end DSLR without preparation, but if we consider a DSLR as a “tool”, then the question arises: is it really necessary to buy, for example, a bad jigsaw, screwdriver, puncher, etc., in order to understand the simple truth - what is more professional tool , the more convenient it is for them to work. the most important difference is the finances spent! not every budget can handle professional equipment, so compromises must be sought. I don't think that after a couple of months of close contact with a professional camera, an amateur photographer will not be able to get normal photos. But it is very easy to be disappointed by noise at high iso, by poor autofocus in an amateur camera. I am totally against whale lenses. they make it difficult to understand the effect of aperture on the picture and make the photo very mediocre. therefore, many amateurs simply throw a DSLR into the far corner.
For a beginner photographer, I recommend: D7000 + fixed 50 mm + flash like SB-600 or 700. If finances allow, then D800 + fixed 50, 105 macro. after close communication with these sets - everyone will understand what he needs. Of course, you need to learn how to shoot: read smart books, look at photos, analyze your pictures and constantly experiment! without this, it is better not to buy a DSLR at all, but limit yourself to a soap dish.
I understand that I will cause a storm of indignation for such advice. everyone will start to say that the D3000 kit is enough for an amateur. He will then have two ways: either to quit taking a photo, or to buy a normal technique, because apart from basic skills and basics of composition, he will receive nothing. and will be surprised why the photos do not look like the pro's in any way ... (Do not be offended, all IMHO ;-)

    • Alexander

..yes, why the storm .. in principle, right. Just many want to, but it’s prickling .. they’re not confident in their abilities .. but it’s a pity to throw out a tidy sum so that then it all lies on the shelf and gather dust ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

As a counter example for the camera - I have a lot of good photos taken with the D40 http://wedding-photographer.tv/gallerys/nature/travel-nature.html (below EXIF signature), there are wedding examples, but you need to dig for a long time. And even now I shoot simple things at d40. But why would an amateur photographer d800 - this is a very serious question :)

      • Alexey N.

Super cool photos by reference, in my life I would not say that it was shot on d40 and other simple equipment, even on whale Pentax I saw a picture !!!!!

    • Igor

For the 90th pishov on the course of photographs, I would like and also have a lot of knowledge. Bully in us and with cameras “smuna”, and “zenitami”, one mav “pentax” is cool for that hour! And no more than that, it’s not in the mind of the photographer, but in the mind of the photographer, but the view of the photograph was taken by the simple “smart”. At this hour, it’s not marvelous є “photographs”, I think that what the fancy camera is, it’s more beautiful than the photo, then it’s just the wicked laugh. people.

      • Oksana

Igore about “Smuni”. You know, if in me, 8-bit girls like the 80s called "Zenit" Sm ”ni ”knew. My stench seemed to be simple and pleasant. І Skoda, today such school cameras cannot be damaged. From them you can get good signs in the right direction! I have a lot of problems.

    • Oleksandr

For pіvroku koristuvannya digital mirror bіlsh-mensh sensible photos can be pererahuvati on fingers. And from the znyati on Canon A520 and even earlier, on float FED-5s - kupa. Here the food for an hour (practice) was given, it was a good time to go to the moment of zyomka, well, and all the same, one whale store was forgotten to be found for the ear. If you want to go more, you can see a small whale near the cob with a mirror.

    • Oksana

My God, what kind of D800 is for an amateur ??? What's wrong? I would give old film cameras at first! They immediately instill a sense of the frame in a beginner. Well, if the figure is something simple, and even a Nikon D3000 type soap dish. Or even easier.

  • moon13

If such a question arises then clearly: glue sticks!

  • Bagheera

Personally, B. Peterson's book "The Power of Exposure" helped me in studying the basics of photography. I recommend reading it to all beginner photographers who have a DSLR.

    • Svetlana

Thanks for the tip! Indeed, the book is super!

    • Igor

      Thanks for the tip

  • Arkady Shapoval

this is also your subjective opinion, there are a lot of subtleties, without understanding some fundamentals there will be no good pictures, but for this you need to learn a little, etc.

  • Alexander

Well, at the expense of investing money in photo courses .. You won’t learn anything there .. unless you first picked up the camera and don’t know how to turn it on .. Yes, they will explain what the diaphragm is ... exposure. But it’s all possible read in the camera’s manual. All this information can be easily found on the Internet. The master classes are more useful but they are not always good. In most cases, it’s a show off and cutting money. Nobody wants to open their secrets ..
I heard and attended courses and classes .. but I just pick up the camera and everything flies from my head and I don’t know what to do ..
I agree, everything needs to be studied. But sometimes a beginner does not have enough basic things — a flash, a tripod .. Perhaps that’s why there are many questions at once, which ones are better and what to buy ..
Probably the main factor is the zest in a person .. When it is then he himself knows what to do ..

    • Vadim

It’s strange, after all, if a person who has not learned to drive buys a car for himself, and then only after a while begins to think: “Maybe, learn? Should I get the right? See what's inside? Choose a better typewriter? "
In the same way, I am amazed by people who buy themselves a camera before they have learned to photograph. And even better - before holding the camera in hand. And the coolest option is if it is a super professional DSLR at once.

IMHO, ideally, the courses should be taken BEFORE buying a camera, so that later it would be clear whether you need to buy it at all, and if “yes”, which one.

I don't consider myself an expert, but people often turn to me to tell me which photo equipment to choose, where to start. Only a few start a conversation by showing their successful pictures on a mobile phone, a miserable soap box, etc., and then ask how such pictures could be made better, more detailed, faster, etc. The rest usually start with a budget, the obligatory mention that it should be a DSLR with such a lens, and “why would there be such a fancy choice to make it better than that of friends / acquaintances”.

Interestingly, after the first mentions that DSLRs have more weight / dimensions, there is no standard macro mode, and the possibilities of zooming, getting a “beautiful blurred background” depend on the lenses, which you may have to change and carry with you; in pictures with a built-in flash, there will still be ugly reflections in the foreground and shadows in the background - some applicants and 2/3 of applicants for DSLRs are eliminated, they choose universal or ultra-zoom digital cameras. Another part starts looking at the system cameras. In my opinion, not the worst option either. And finally, only with the most persistent, ready for anything, we go to Nikon / Canon / others. and move on to choosing a DSLR. All this time I keep repeating that none of the cameras has a magic button “Cool shot” and the higher the class, the more difficult it is to control the camera - not vice versa.

IMHO, tripods, flashes, a bunch of filters and everything else should appear in the life of a novice photographer as answers to his questions, and not: “you need to stock up on all occasions, but you need it or not - that's the point ...”.
If a beginner photographer lacks basic things - a flash, a tripod, usually there are friends / acquaintances around with whom you can spend an hour or two and decide whether they are really needed or is it easier to just take them from someone 1 r. / Month / year.
All Slando is teeming with ads: "Equipment for rent." Please call, rent a camera / lens / flash / tripod for an hour or two and what else you need, take a picture - it will become much easier to choose. At the same time, check whether you have found a "zest" or not.

      • Sergei

I agree with you, everyone should determine for himself what he needs and what technique can be useful, so he took a tripod from a friend and tried it once or twice and realized that this is not particularly interesting to me, and it can come in handy for me once every two, three months - when needed will be, I will take it and use it for its intended purpose, and there is no need to carry around with it constantly.

      • Pogulyayko Artem

“Tripods, flashes, a bunch of filters and everything else should appear in the life of a beginner photographer as answers to his questions” - very well said.

  • Alexey N.

They clung to photo courses, the person writes about books. If you don't want to go to courses, buy a book, it will be more useful as your d800 with 70-200 / 2.8. Everything is written on the case, every day I see a blond with fir trees and photoshopped photos - ejo horror! "Photographs" have bred! The factories are standing - everyone is taking pictures! One hundred likes per article!

    • Alexander

Yes, the article is correct, with both hands in favor. A good technique is needed .. but knowledge is needed. And in what way, let everyone solve it.

  • Maksim

let's face it, photography is a hobby ... like picking mushrooms, someone picks up fly agarics)))) and a cool camera is a khasel or nikon D4 ???

    • Denis

:))) Nikon DSLRs (Canon, Pentax, etc.) are specialized “reporters” tailored for events, sports and street photography. Hasselblad is a real (in the full sense of the word) studio (portrait) and landscape camera. A professional photographer should, among other things, by definition have an arsenal of medium format cameras (Hasselblad, Mamiya ...) and DSLRs (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, etc.). To shoot a wedding professionally, ideally, means staged and studio photos in medium format, and ransom, painting and festivities - on a DSLR. In budget economy mode - grind everything on a DSLR. Do not look at professional advertising photos with awesome detail and sharpness - you will not shoot this on a DSLR, for all this is a medium format kitchen. For “biting” prices for medium-format cameras, they buy expensive and not very expensive cars, and then they stand in traffic jams and think: “Oh, I wish I shot in nature with Hasselblad!” :))) ...

      • Roman

I support, normal detailing is SF, but preferably not sprinkled SF. Very few beautiful photos, very much. And beautiful photos are not profitable. By beautiful, I understand those that touch and don’t shout with plot tricks and paints, paints, sliders, photoshop, unrealistic (respectively not normal) plots and lighting effects.

  • Boris

I suppose that a heated discussion will unfold now. so I hasten to tell many. The ancient Romans had wisdom in use, translated as: "REASONABLE IS ENOUGH". I believe that in the eternal debate, which is better: a sharp sword or a warrior-master, everyone is right. A distinctive feature of those who take part in this forum is youth, which means, on the one hand, a thirst for knowledge, experiment, an irrepressible desire to assert themselves in their own eyes, on the other hand, the lack of life experience, the predominance of youthful ardor and arrogance over common sense and a critical look at oneself, loved ones ... Therefore, all sorts of stupid and arrogant comments appear. Time will heal ... On the topic ... You don't need to be an academic to know: the most outstanding works of the most prominent masters of the recent past were made by far from the best cameras. In Soviet times, to the question: which camera is better? - the answer was invariably: the one that you have. The attitude to the camera was brought up as to a friend, a comrade, with whom one must certainly get along, as with a person, i.e. learn his character, inclinations, whims and habits, then the devil himself is not afraid of you, because in the hands of a friend, he will not let you down! You couldn't just throw it away, sell it, break it. Not because it is forbidden, but because friends do not do that! And they shot, and printed, and filled the albums ... The ideology has changed - now, despite the prices, the value of the camera along with a pair of socks - stink - did not even wash, just threw it away. Few people want to achieve a result; they expect it from the camera. And meanwhile, in crappy hands and "Linghof" -wood. As you read the forums, it becomes depressing from the massive profanation, raised to the rank of omniscience. "We all learned something and somehow ..." Okay, you can endlessly howl about this. I give specific advice: look for old Soviet books (but not earlier than the 70s of release). If you skip the features of old technologies and mentally adapt the information provided to modern conditions, you will find a lot of very sensible information on all genres. I'm mainly engaged in portraiture, so until now my handbook is the textbook of Feldman and Kurskiy "Technique and technology of photography (edition 1981)

  • Boris

And finally! Raise the magazines ”Soviet photo: 70-80s. There is so much for inspiration, for learning, for reason !!

  • Oleg

Partly you are right, and partly not. You reason with prejudice, as a person with a passion for photography, and not as a simple person. Some lovers need a SLR, but no courses are needed.
They buy DSLRs, not at all because they are passionate about photography, but because they want to shoot technically high-quality photos and be sure that the focus is not missed, and night shooting will work, etc. For example, my wife does not know at all what shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. are. But she distinguishes the photo taken by a soap dish and a reflex camera. She knows what it is when a focus misses when photographing children. Soap dish for photos of running children, you won’t have time to take half of the photos, but throw it out the second due to a focus error. But the DSLR fota quickly and without errors. She also likes the blurry background, which also can not be removed with a soap box. Her amateur choice is Sony's DSLR, due to the presence of a full-fledged liveview on the screen (she does not agree to watch the OVI). She also likes the external flash because of the speed of work. On other cameras, she, as an amateur, does not agree. She needs a SLR, but no courses are needed.
The question is which DSLR to buy cheap or expensive is a wallet issue, because if you have to carry a large camera, then let it be good. Expensive cameras are more reliable and shoot better.

    • Vadim

Oleg, it’s really great that your wife KNOWS why she needs a good SLR, and YOU KNOW what you pay money for.

Unfortunately, many aspiring photographers take SLRs because:
      - it's cool, fashionable, stylish, youth
      - this is what my friends / acquaintances have, I don't want to be like a fool with a soap dish
      - her lens is larger, wider, longer
      - with her you look like a cool macho or the wife of an oligarch
      - there are many buttons, and the largest one should show off the inscription “Cool shot”
Therefore, the discussions are divided on the topic "On ... on a balalaika goat? !!"

The answer is simple: the CHOICE must be REASONABLE and CONSCIOUS.
      As in your case :)

      • Oleg

I believe that not many people agree to carry a healthy and heavy thing just because it is cool. If they agreed, to pay, and then drag it also means for them it's not just cool, it means something more for them.

        • Vadim

It is for this reason that on the same Slando, a bunch of ads constantly hangs with comments: “new condition, 3 years lying on the shelf”, “camera 5 years old, run 3000 shots”, “excellent condition, the girl learned to take pictures, realized that it was not her " etc.

Our people manage at first to buy a cool thing, then to understand that it is still healthy and heavy, and only after that give it up. Again, glad that this is not your case.

        • Vadim

Why go far for an example?
My former D200 (now D300) got it as a present from my brother, who took a “awesome photo” in 2005, and then gave it away, because "There is no time anyway", "something needs to be tuned there", "if you take a day, your hand falls off." At the same time, he is not a “blonde”, but just a person with good income, who wanted to buy a cool gadget.

      • Igor

But what about "You can't forbid living beautifully?" :)

      • Ivan

and she can also unscrew the lens and insert another)

    • anonym

I have that “cool” device in use. And here's what I can say about its use in everyday life:
A professional camera is, first of all, the most convenient tool that allows you to get a guaranteed high result at the lowest cost.
A camera of this class is NOT INTENDED for beginners, because it is assumed that the user has an idea of the theory and practice of photo-making.
Of the shortcomings, I noted for myself only the weight of the camera, it is not very comfortable to wear it all day….
ZY Photo is not a profession, the camera is called D2Xs.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

By the way, in Soviet times, people shot at full frame and fast aperture ;-)
What is a cool camera for? so that autofocus would catch football players, so that exposure metering and autofocus on the green dot would work on the Soviet fix. so that with back and front focus on the glass, this could be fixed. so that the width is wide. so that the stars can be filmed, and not a noisy mess ... just, admit, we have little prosperity. it is difficult with such a small income and important expenses for a family to buy good equipment! no need to bend the soul! that's why golden boys and girls buy all sorts of watering cans and hasselies there ... but really good photographers have to stay with the usual crop. I'm not a super-duper, but I feel like I've outgrown my d90. and I see only d800 as a replacement. I’m unlikely to be able to immediately repulse it, but when shooting, it will help me to think more often about the composition, and not focusing or noisy ISO ... good luck everyone! have more good photos. both on d40 and on d4

    • Denis

I agree, especially about Soviet times ... 24 × 36 film was always considered a narrow-format everyday thing. Somewhere in the comments here on Radozhiv it is written that the crop is a mistake ... And there is some truth in this, not to mention the ridiculous size of the matrix of pocket compacts ... It's just that everyone, from small to large, wants to have a “fotik” and thank God everyone available satisfied by manufacturers of photographic equipment.

My situation was a little different. After buying my camera (d5000), I realized that now I have to read and try a lot (because I didn’t even know what a diaphragm is and what they eat it with :)) As regards photo courses, I’m wasted money, well what they can teach there in a couple of days ? Personally, for a couple of years now I have been going to understand this or that setting on the camera and how and when to use it (and at the same time, how many dozen frames went to the trash can I didn't even count ... a lot). Book. The book is a useful thing, but it was more convenient for me to watch the video on YouTube and run out into the street to try. I would like to say a lot more, but you can't remember right away. I remember the first feeling after the purchase -bliiiiiiiiiin and for what that kind of money? Onazh (camera) doesn’t shoot normally ... you have to joke on the internet about what's going on. I'm still joking)))

The industrialist is generally an omifiguous mi-mi-mi lens.
Taking into account the fact that it is elementary sawn to infinity, it is easy to operate, cheap (you can generally change it to a pack of juice or "here you take it, it’s lying around"), while with a nice pattern, and its appearance on an entry-level DSLR is very funny - it is very good to teach beginners on it (and it is very useful to keep it in your pocket just in case).

  • Arkady Shapoval

People who switch from camera to camera already have some experience working with technology and know what they need. Many people themselves will never be able to deal with some things in their life.

you can create masterpieces on the D3100, or you can take a picture with it, like a soap box ... everything is described correctly in the article, you need to LEARN !!! now I have a D3100, I am planning a D90 as a transitional before the D700 (if I need to switch to FF), after all, I can put lenses after it on FF, which will be cheaper in the future, and DX lenses after the D3100 are only under the hammer ... while I'm satisfied with the first DSLR, I'm studying ...

My friend has such a thought: “Before you can buy your first new car, you need to buy an old Muscovite and a razdolbati yogo.”

    • Ivan

I agree, but with a reservation, if this Muscovite is in good technical condition,
in relation to the camera, I did almost the same - I began my mirror path from a seriously outdated, but reliable, and in the XTS Canon 50D with low mileage, I try to smash with soul but carefully, at the end of his life I will decide - to restore, buy the same level but fresher, splurge on FF or score on the central locking center and shoot with hyperzuma / mirrorless

  • Anatoly

Arkady, I’m reading and I think the article is correct and necessary, but many perceived it as criteria - the more expensive the photographic equipment, the better.
When daddy buys fixes for their D800 + majors, as described above, these Hvotograkhvs have no chance to understand what to do with this photographic technique, not to shoot less decent shots. This article will not help them make the right decision where and how they can learn to take pictures, but they don’t need to, the main thing is to spread fingers wider in the same circle.
