Type Jupiter-9 85 2,0

View of Jupiter-9 85 2,0 from Contax cameras

My copy from this review originally had a Contax-Kiev mount (aka RF). By our craftsmen, the bayonet mount was sawn under the Nikon F mount while maintaining focus on infinity. Rumor has it that the Jupiter-9 versions for Contax-Kiev are the best. How to use old Soviet lenses on modern Nikon cameras you can read in the section Soviet optics.

Marking the lens Jupiter-9

Marking of the lens Jupiter-9, the letter P in the name.

Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P has a pronounced lilac enlightenment, the letter P in the name of the lens just indicates enlightenment. The whole lens has an unusual body color for our time. The white metal lens looks unusual on modern cameras.

Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P focuses from infinity to 1.15 meters, while the focus ring rotates 180 degrees. The trunk of the lens lengthens by about 1 cm. When focusing front lens rotates. The diaphragm control ring is located near the front lens. Aperture values are 2.0, 2.8, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. Aperture adjustable smoothly, without clicks, you can set any intermediate values of the F number, which is quite important for video. The front filter diameter is 49mm. By the way, if someone has examples of video clips from this lens - drop the links in the comments to this review.

Jupiter-9 side view.

Jupiter-9 side view. The rear of the lens has been redone for installation on Nikon cameras.

A distinctive feature of Jupiter-9 is its 15 blade aperture. The aperture device always allows you to get even circles in the blur zone. The bokeh of the lens is excellent.

Sample photos:

All photos were shot on a full-format camera. Nikon D700 and a converted lens Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P Contax-Kiev. Photos without processing, only reduced size and added data from EXIF. Special thanks to Nate and Albina for the photos.

Personal impressions

Judging by the serial number of my copy 620790, the lens is more than 50 years old. A 15-blade aperture and a combination of F / 2.0 aperture with 85mm focal length make this portrait a wonderful portrait lens. On the crop, he remains as good. I am very surprised that many amateur photographers often pass by the lenses of the Jupiter-9 series in search of Helios-40 (40-2). Among the shortcomings, I can single out the factor that when focusing, the aperture control ring is often touched and the current aperture value gets lost. Also, when sighting, it is clearly visible that the lens is yellow.

Dimensions of two lenses

The sizes of two lenses: Jupiter-9 85mm F2.0 P and Nikon 85mm F1.8D AF Nikkor

Conclusions:

Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P Contax-Kiev is a good portrait lens, it requires serious alteration to work on modern SLR cameras. Jupiter-9 is one of the best soviet portrait lenses.

Tell me, who knows, the rangefinder Yu-9, converted to a DSLR (in my case, Nikon), is the same as in the review, which MDF has? Remaining 1,5 meters?

    • Sergei

      Saved if correctly redone.

  • Andy Le Sauce

There is such a 62 year old Arsenal.
I use in Kiev. By the way, it does not yellow at all,
neither in the light, nor in the pictures, no yellowness.
The same KMZ-shny 59-year-old turns yellow and green very noticeably, which makes it “only for bw”.
Arsenal is a good lens, really like.
    Thanks Arkady for the review.

how to remake Jupiter 9 rangefinder with a Contax-Kiev mount under Nikon or under M42?

    • Dima

Also interested in the issue of altering the rangefinder Jupiter 9 with a Kiev mount for Nikon or M42 with subsequent installation on Nikon. I have Jupiter 9 on M42, but there is no infinity.

      • Alexander

Jupiter 9 rangefinder with a Contax-Kiev mount is not difficult to remake, but for this you need the appropriate skill and tool, if none are available, find someone who can remake you, but this is the problem, because such a person is most likely not your neighbor, but I think it will be unprofitable to send back and forth to the master, and there is no guarantee that you will find the master, or you will not be thrown, therefore you can try it yourself, but for this you need the relevant information, I think you can find it on the network, well, if not write, I can by theory pom Pts, I had the happiness to remake a few drips from the arsenal.

Sasha, hello) could you remake the Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm lens for the EF-S Canon eos 650D mount? how much does it cost and is that possible?)

  • asp

Jupiter-9 with a Contax-Kiev mount of the 60s is an amazing lens. And to remake it on the M 42 thread is not difficult, and no turning work is necessary.

  • Alexander Fedorovich

Dear Arkady and other readers, the Jupiter-9 automatic machine is converted to nikon, canon without turning work with the installation of the aperture control ring, I can tell you how.
I’m somehow offended by our lenses that lie and gather dust. And for your site
    Arkady BIG thanks.

    • Anastasia

Alexander, hello) could you remake the Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm lens for the EF-S Canon eos 650D mount?

  • anonym

Alexander Fedorovich, it would be interesting to know how this Jupiter is redone without turning!

  • anonym

The correct approach to test shots. This lens should never be tested on flat objects. It was conceived to convey volume with unrivaled plasticity. Here he is beyond competition. And no one needs his tests across the worlds, they are meaningless, since no one removes their documents. If you really try, then on the head of the sculpture in a scale to the original 1: 1. And the background is not monotonous. Then "oh and ah".

  • Victor

And how to remake the rangefinder under the SLR? There is a crazy difference in working lengths. About 1 cm, if not mistaken, not in favor of the DSLRs.

  • Oleg

Joining the question of reworking on Nikon, at least someone, share SPECIFIC info
    Thank you

  • ALEXANDER

Damn the people there is nothing difficult to rework; in this instance, I used the last ring from the prectine before it, it stood up perfectly and it turned out beautifully, but I also altered everything clearly without it too

    • Anastasia

      Hello) and could you remake the Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm lens for the EF-S Canon eos 650D mount ??

  • ALEXANDER

who really need to find me in contact I will help than I can

  • Oleg

I have such a regrind on a lathe, I liked it. the truth is not enough autofocus, so I decided to sell it

If so, then with such an adapter on a canon how will it work?

  • Anastasia

as a question about "how to make it work with a DSLR?" - everyone goes into deep blair .. no specifics, gentlemen))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Give the master to regrind the lens :)

      • Anastasia

The article is awesome. Thank you, this is rare in our time.

    • Rodin

It is simply taken, sought and done.

      • anonym

I found the m42 adapter for canon. It’s worth a thousand) and don’t have to grind anything. True, they say that the lens aperture is eaten up a bit .. This is sadness .. But I think that washing will not be bad either)) what do you say?)

        • Arkady Shapoval

The article deals with the Jupiter-9 1: 2 F = 8.5cm P lens with a Contax-Kiev mount, which without alteration (regrinding) will not be able to work normally with any existing adapter. If you want to use the usual M42-Canon EOS adapter, then for this you should use other lenses of the Jupiter-9 brand with a M42 or M39 mounting thread (for SLR cameras). In this case, there will be no subsidence of the aperture. Most likely you do not own the subject of conversation in a proper way. To use, look for other versions of the Jupiter-9 lens.

          • Anastasia

            Yes, probably. Thanks.

Recently I bought a white version of Jupiter-9 with a Contact-Kiev mount in the commission. I have a micro 4/3 system device. I searched the Internet for adapters, it comes out too expensive (up to 15.000 p. (!!!)) and the choice of shops is small. I decided to make my adapter and made of two M39 macro rings (I got a lens from a rangefinder camera with a short working length) - 5 and 8 mm wide and a standard M39 micro to 4/3 adapter. I removed the brass part with the bayonet shaft in the back of the lens (I suppose this is what is called the internal bayonet mount). He took off and spring-supporting this part. Into the rear ring of the lens (with a bayonet mount) - inside the M39 macro ring comes with an interference fit and is well held in it. So, inserting a 5 mm wide ring, I marked three holes in the annular groove of the bayonet ring. I drilled holes and cut the M3 thread for the mounting screws. I collected the lens. To restore the normal length of the working segment, I added an 39 mm wide M8 ring. As a result, the lens focuses on infinity. It turned out a little ugly, but simple and reliable. For a more accurate fit of the working segment (depending on the sign of deviation), it is possible to put gaskets between the M39 rings or to cut a little the second ring (8 mm) in height from the side of the internal thread.

  • Alex

    Hello!
I also have Jupiter-9 with a Contact-Kiev mount. I want to fit it to the Canon 550d.
Judging by the comments, it seems this is impossible without a cut.
Or are there any adapters? Help!

  • Igor

Please tell me if it will be possible to get focus on infinity on this lens on the Nikon d5300?)

    • Igor

Only through a difficult alteration, is it a rangefinder under the m39.

      • Igor

And please do not tell me how to redo it?

        • Igor

Search in Google, but troublesome. It is better to leave this for a mirrorless or sell. In this review, the body mount Kiev / contact, it is much easier to redo and the instructions are on the internet.

  • finch

    Guys, don’t bark rangefinder lenses.
It is much easier to set up an exchange for M39-M42 on the Internet, the rangefinder does not differ in optical properties from the mirror one, the lens units are simply rearranged by the screw-unscrew method.
You simply ruin the irreplaceable resource of rangefinding helicoids, which now no one can make for any money.
    Think 7 times before cutting.
With respect to those who think.

    • Alexander Hedgehog

And what later prevents you from adding a macro ring if necessary? The panic about the resource of the rangefinders is not clear)

      • anonym

And for what an extra crap ??? The cost of the lenses is the same. Sell unsuitable with a replacement for a mirror lens and VS E! ! And rangefinders are great for mirrorless. In the end, buy for a very cheap used SONI NEX and you will be FAST! ! ! V NE lenses are suitable for NEKS! And there is no need to suffer! Think before irrevocably ruining good lenses! (Yes, and the price of the converted lens is dramatically reduced at times! And what is the point of such a ditching of lenses?)

        • Alexander Hedgehog

The fact that the rangefinders are predictably high quality, unlike black ones, is a solid soap.

        • Ivan

aha-aha, priceless, applied to the k-k (kiev-kontaks) version should be read as "penny" and "useless"? If not, tell me where you can buy an adapter from k-k to nex or micro 4/3 at a price comparable to the adapter m39-bz or m42-bz?

  • Novel

If you are wondering how to remake the Canon eos system. Write to VK. I will help. Do it yourself recently. Everything is simple. The most difficult thing is to give it to a person exactly with straight arms. Everything else is a matter of minutes. and one ring adapter to eos, and specifically, somewhere above threw off links and photos of the result http://vk.com/akhmetov13

  • Mitya

Symbiosis .. Nikon and Soviet glass .. not FSH !!! Autofocus works, aperture unfortunately not, is constant, approximately at f2.2.

  • history

The same rangefinder under Kiev only black Lytkarinets tunnels)) On EOS M.
I was surprised that I was capable of this))

    • history

on a fully open diaphragm estessna))

      • Alexander Hedgehog

        so rangefinders are all great

  • Bank

    Good day.
As I understand it, the U-9 lens under Pentax is simply put on the nex through the adapter: nex-39, and everything works as it should?

  • Bank

I'm sorry, the bodies are stupid. I mean the contact from this review

    • KalekseyG

What you actually find on sale, such an adapter is needed. 39, 42, contax and others - nex

      • Bank

        KalekseyG Thanks for the answer.
If there is a lens from this review, then you need such an adapter: link

It’s just that there are manual ones for size 42, I know that there are 39, but this one is some size incomprehensible to me. And as I understand it on Nex, everything will work great with this adapter, do you need to sharpen and grind anything?

        • Rodion

A complete blizzard is a completely different mount.

  • Bank

So what kind of adapter is needed for nex?

    • Michael

      Nex-Contax RF
