For the opportunity review of the lens Jupiter-21M 4/200 Many thanks to Vadim Shkurat, who sent me a lens from another area for review.

Overview of Jupiter-21M 4/200

Jupiter-21M 4/200 and Jupiter-21A 4/200 - outwardly two different lenses, their bodies are very different. The only thing that remains the same with lenses is optical circuit, and the color of the DOF indicators. Jupiter-21M 4/200 is a newer modification that was produced at the Vologda plant, version Jupiter-21A 4/200 was produced at the Krasnogorsk plant. There are versions with the spelling of the name in Latin: Jupiter-21M, Jupiter-21A. About Jupiter-21A and Jupiter-21M is well described on the website of Sergei Elizarov here.

Jupiter-21M 4/200 can be much more often seen in the hands of amateur photographers than the more rare Jupiter-21A... I used two versions and got the impression that the 'M' version is not that much inferior to the 'A' version. The 'M' in the name of the lens refers to the blinking diaphragm and M42 mounting thread, and the 'A' refers to the replaceable shank. Generally 'A' lenses are considered more successful modifications than others.

The focusing ring of Jupiter-21M 4/200 is very smooth, rotates approximately 270 degrees, while the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk is noticeably lengthened. When focusing, the entire lens unit moves. The minimum focusing distance is 1.8m, versus 1.7m for the 'A' version. Sighting is pleasant and easy.

The weight of the Jupiter-21M 4/200 lens has increased to 980 g, compared to 740 g for the 'A' version. Jupiter-21M has a built-in retractable hood, the hood is metallic and short. The diameter of the lens hood is 67mm, and the diameter of the front filter is 58mm. The lens that is presented in this review is numbered 83018196.

Jupiter-21M has an automatic blinking aperture. The lens has a special ring that can be used to switch to manual 'M' or automatic 'A' aperture control. The aperture ring itself is in the middle of the lens, you can only set fixed F-numbers from F / 4-F / 22. The 'A' version had a smooth aperture change and an additional ring for its preset. Also, the number of diaphragm blades was cut off for Jupiter-21M, now they have become 8 pieces, compared to 10 in the 'A' version. When the aperture is closed down to f / 8, the lens produces nuts with serrated in the out-of-focus area (the so-called circular saw, see for yourself). The 'A' version has smoother circles in the out-of-focus area on closed diaphragms.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?

  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.

If you have any questions on compatibility and adapters - ask in the comments (comments do not require any registration at all).

They say that there is still a Jupiter-21 lens in a white frame under M39 (mirror), Jupiter-21M-2 and Jupiter-21A MS version, if anyone has data on these modifications, add them to the comments.

Arkady, recently purchased this lens, I use it with a nikon1 s1 mirrorless camera and noticed that the camera has little light and to get a normal picture requires a long shutter speed, somewhere around 1/6 ″, which is a bit too much for handheld shooting, and raising ISO is not good. and so it turns out 800. They might be better off shooting on a bright sunny day.

I will sell Jupiter 21m, full-frame, completely new, from storage (1983), I have never been used. He was part of the collection of Soviet photographic equipment. Full set: native case, documents, purchase receipt (also the 83rd year). Price 5000 rub. without bargaining. You can pick up in Moscow, or sending in Russia. Greed is not a vice, but a way of life. Ilya seems to have confused Arkady’s site with a flea market. And you do not boil, Alexander, since November, he certainly has already sold, and of course without bargaining. :)

      • Dan

In general, I recently took on Avito for 1500. Of course, for modification A, more than a dozen are already broken, you can't buy it.

  • Sergei

After much deliberation, I purchased the Jupiter-21M lens. And did not regret it. The pleasure of shooting is incredible. I will actively use it. This is not a reporting lens, it is for the soul!

    • Igor

I completely agree with you, a very interesting glass milking artistry.

It’s even nice to pick it up.

The lens is chic, I use olympus omd em10. The stabilizer helps in full!

  • Yaroslav

Is there any difference between lenses in which there are inscriptions in Russian and in English?

    • anonym

It is said that in Latin the options usually go down the hill. The grass is greener. Although used and Industar-50-2, and Helios-44m. I did not notice much difference with lenses with Cyrillic. Maybe too budget.

  • Sanchez

The question is, under Kenon, which Soviet lens is optimal for shooting the starry sky? Thanks.

    • Galatey

optimal helios 44-2 or 44m they are sharper. they have a good aperture, set the shutter speed to -10 seconds, at ISO up to 800. less noise and no tracking of loops. More aperture is not always good, they have weaker sharpness.

Today I tried on this lens on Nikon D 750 with all possible adapters, with and without lenses. Problems with focusing on infinity, it seems that a little infinity mark is missing the risks. In general, half a day tormented, nothing really happened, and when I got to infinity, it was so sensitive that half a millimeter to the right or left was no longer in sharpness. It's a shame, I liked the picture from him, and in contrast, and light, and the colors are good. Compared with 24-85 3,5 in terms of picture quality, Jupiter liked it better. But alas. 24/04/2019

    • BB

Cheap adapters with a lens spoil the picture (wash), especially when open. With a standard adapter - just saw through (otherwise there will be no infinity).
But the tail can’t cling to the mirror, or rest against something (because of this, infinity is not caught), all the same FF?

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

21 Jupiter is simply transformed into Nikon - the decorative conical cover at the back is unscrewed, then the threaded nut. The spacer ring is transferred from the other side of the shoulder, instead of it another 0,8 - 1 mm thick is placed (more precisely, it is selected until it reaches infinity). The parts of the jumper mechanism are removed, the diaphragm leash is fixed with a thin wire for the nearest screw, the diaphragm control part is slightly trimmed and the lens is assembled again. A detailed description of the work is easy to find in the internet.

    Good afternoon.
I noticed that when using the “Pixco Speed Booster M42-M4 / 3” adapter on a Panasonic G80 camera, a round flare appears in the center of the frame (only with this lens and this adapter, the adapter is friendly with other lenses).

  • Passer

    Hello!
Can anyone help me choose between this lens and the MC Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135? I choose Nikon D7000 (crop matrix) for DSLR. I'm only interested in the sharpness across the entire field of the frame at apertures up to 8. Or, more simply, which one is sharper NOT according to the declared characteristics, but in fact?
    Thank you in advance!

    • Rodion

      So completely different focal!

      • Passer

You can adapt and sleep on the ceiling. :)

    • anonym

Well, yes, they took it straight and told you the secret of Soviet lenses :) ...
Take Jupiter-37A, it will be more comfortable on the crop, and in general ...

      • Passer

I’m not Malchish-Badish to find out "secrets", I’m interested in your personal experience of using these lenses. :)
According to test photos from the reviews, I also tend to Jupiter-37A. But in order to make a final decision, I turned here for help and arguments in favor of someone else.

        • BB

Yu-37a like on the crop as a portrait. About sharpness: what is in focus, every hair is visible there even on F4 at the edge of the frame. The second did not use. With crop and 135mm, and so have to go far, with 200mm will have to go further :)

          • Passer

Well, everything, then it is decided - I take Jupiter 37A.
Thank you all for the help!

  • Azat

Good afternoon. The question is - this lens has appeared in the collection. There is a mark with the letter M on the distance ring, but whatever one may say, it does not turn to it. Stops at infinity and 1.8 in the opposite direction. Is that how it should be? Or I got it not quite serviceable.

    • anonym

  • anonym

What will an adapter for Canon with a chip give me?

    • Michael

      Focus Confirmation

      • anonym

At Nikon I use old manual lenses without any chips, Canon has recently appeared and was thinking about ordering adapters with or without a chip.

  • Vladimir

    Of course with the chip!

  • Sergei

Good day. I bought an adapter ring with a chip from your link, when you connect a ring, the camera requires software for this lens. Canon eos 650 d camera Does the chip need to be programmed or is there somewhere?

  • Novel

Tell me, is it suitable for a nikon d 750 M, somewhere I saw that the mirror can break somehow, how much can it be true and what is the best adapter for this camera?

  • Timurjan

I accidentally bought this lens in a new condition. Number 84008868. There are 2 minuses - chromatic aberration and dislike for backlighting, maybe more weight, but this feeling of glass and metal ... Monumental! I don’t know how many, but I still have my feelings for Soviet optics. There is also a successful Helios 44m with the coolest twisted bokeh, and the U37a is sharp right up to tears) 😜 So why all this - these glasses have their drawbacks - but this at the same time makes you think before taking a shot and makes them unique, adding artistic charm. There are good manual Japanese people who have everything exactly - so perfect that it makes no difference, but there are people like this. Like a cropped portrait lens - no, like a telephoto lens for long-focus landscapes - 👌, but not for every day. To make a frame with this lens, you need an idea that needs to be nurtured for a long time. Okay, sold out. Arkady, thank you for your efforts - it is always interesting to read - a real encyclopedia of Soviet and not only optics. All the world without macaronavirus!

  • Egor

There was also Jupiter 21M-2 - produced by VOMZ and Jupiter-21T - an option for movie cameras.

    • Rodion

I have not heard about the M-2, but I even had a 21T) Excellent lens!

  • Nicholas

Hello, I recently bought this lens, I found a problem, the focus ring stops at 50 m and does not go further, the objects turn out to be a little blurry, can anyone suggest what the problem is?

    • B. R. P.

You never know. Maybe the grease has dried up, it can be disassembled and crookedly assembled.

  • Vladislav

I took off a test review of Jupiter-21M, perhaps someone will be interested in an alternative opinion about this telephoto.

  • Nikolay

    Another photo from this lens.

  • Jury

Not a bad lens, but Telear N will be more interesting for Nikonists.

  • Rashit

The forgotten one has been lying around since film times. I put it on the newly acquired Olympus OM-D E-M10 MarcIII. So far, only one frame. Naturally, you need to buy a lens mount for a tripod, because the camera itself will not support this weight.

  • Dmitriy

I recently bought one on Avito. I liked the lens very much. Sharpness is excellent, colors are pleasant. My humble opinion, but almost on par with Carl Zeiss. In general, a very professional and correct picture. I did not expect it, especially at a price slightly less than 2000 rubles. )) It's a little heavy, of course, to walk around the city, but you can get used to it. In general, now this is my main lens for street photography.
