Review Olympus OM-System Zuiko MC Auto-S 1: 1,8 f = 50mm Japan

This time, a small, remote Zuiko MC 1,8 / 50 came to my review. The lens is really tiny, well-assembled, without any backlash. The weight of the lens is approximately 160 grams. The lens is made in Japan. The focus and aperture ring is very convenient. Zuiko MC 1,8 / 50 on cropped cameras can be used as a portrait lens. Due to the beautiful pattern that the lens gives, and also because of the good combination of aperture and focal length, the lens is suitable for many creative ideas. There are many modifications of Olympus OM-System Zuiko lenses of class 1,8 / 50, for example, you can look at this Olympus OM-System F.Zuiko Auto-S 1: 1,8 f = 50mm. You can read about modifications here.

The focus ring is rubberized, rotates 180 degrees. The minimum focusing distance is 45cm. The lens has a focus distance scale and a depth of field scale. Focusing on the lens is nice and easy. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens is extended by 1 cm. The diameter of the front filter is 49 mm. The focus method is not unusual.

The aperture control ring is in front of the lens. The number of aperture blades is 6 pieces. When focusing, I never touched the aperture ring.

The lens gives a nice picture. The bokeh on f / 1.8 is pretty interesting. In general, image quality is up to par.

Sample Photos

All photos taken on Canon 350D, photo without processing. I used the OM-EOS adapter, while maintaining focus on infinity and manual iris control.

From small remarks on the quality of the image: on an open aperture, you can very easily get frigging (coloring in purple and green on contrasting elements in the out-of-focus area), sometimes you come across small 'spots' in side or backlight. At f / 2.8, the aperture forms slightly serrated hex nut, if you close the diaphragm more strongly, the notches disappear.

This lens can be easily installed on any modern digital mirrorless camera. For installation, you should use the appropriate adapter/adapter, which allows you to use lenses with an Olympus OM mount on the desired mirrorless system without any problems or restrictions. Below is a list of systems/mounts with links to the necessary adapters/adapters: Sony E/FE/NEX, Canon RF/RF-S, Canon EF-M, Nikon ZNikon 1, Leica l, FujiFilm GFX, fujifilm x, Samsung NX, Micro 4 / 3.

Conclusions:
Olympus OM-System Zuiko MC Auto-S 1: 1,8 f = 50mm Japan is a nice little fifty dollars. Attracts aperture, nice design, build quality and image. My version has multi-enlightenment.

And what kind of adapter do you need on Nikon for this Lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Due to the different working lengths of Nikon and Olympus OM, you need an adapter with a lens. But the best way is to change the lens mount. Adapters are sold on the Internet.

  • Master

And tell Nikon how to fix it? Is there an adapter?

    • Arkady Shapoval

It is possible through an adapter with a lens. It’s better to remake the lens for Nikon.

Arkady, which one is more interesting in your opinion? Is this zuiko or takumar?

  • Alexander

It turns out that from Olympus you can imprison under Nikon !! Good news :)) I did not know.

    • Ampels

A lot of what Mona to grind under Nikon, the main thing is to grind your hands at the beginning)))

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Yes exactly :)

Good evening, I want to ask because you have a lot of experience with different lenses, and which lens is better: MC Pancolar 1.8 / 50 Carl Zeiss Jena or Zuiko MC Auto-S 1: 1,8 f = 50mm Japan which one will be clearer or softer draws.
    Thank you!

Good day Arkadiy, but tell me about OLYMPUS Zuiko MC Auto-S 50mm F1.4,
Is there a need to see what else is there?

The other day I received the same version of the lens for my canon 600D from ebay. Compared by eye with the canon 50mm f1.8 - the canon is a little sharper, and the black seemed deeper. In the blind test, the portraits could not be distinguished. So both are good.

  • Timur

In b / w, the pictures are generally identical.

  • Dmitriy

Arkady! I wanted to ask whether this lens as a portrait on Canon will be better in the picture than the Canon 50mm 1.8 or not?

    • Mikola Fedorovich

      Yes

    • Ivan

In general, never))) Boot and cheaper and autofocus. What are you talking about here ???

      • Gregor

        Ohoho

Hello everyone! I use the Sony a77 camera and I was very interested in this lens, discussed in this topic. Good people, tell me please, is there an adapter in nature for installing the Zuiko lens on the Sony a77 camera? Please help. I will be glad if you answer not only here, but also to my electronic one. I will be very grateful to everyone who will at least somehow help me in this matter. Thank you all.

    • Artyom

type in the Ibey search “Adapter” and the name of both bayonets.

Hello. I ask for such advice. There is a Pentacon 50 / 1.8 zebra on hand. I really do not like how he softets on open until 2.8. Does it make sense to exchange it for a zoo?
I shoot on a mirror Olympus and put a zuiko on it would probably be "in the subject"))))

  • anonym

    Excellent portraiture on crop.

    • Gregor

      great photo

  • Chris

Is this lens suitable for 5200nikon?

In my opinion, this is the smallest fifty dollars, it takes off well, but it just turns a little yellow on me, probably it's about enlightenment, so it’s idle

    • Dmitry (Moscow)

No, it's not about enlightenment. The glass itself turns yellow - Olympus had it of its own, unique, including its varieties with record refractive indices (which allowed them to make such compact optics). Plus, the highest level of production culture - there is not a single product with poorly blackened lens ends (the Pentax, for example, did not care - their cheap lenses are akin to Soviet ones). You take Zuiko in your hands and you understand: very cool guys did it, incredibly thorough, neat - super-masters. As for enlightenment, alas: Olympus had no patents for the best coating technology. They lagged behind Pentax / Nikon by 10 years to the 80s. Even in the USSR, LOMO could do better (but not in series, but piece products). And, nevertheless, all the same, their optics were highly valued at that time. Some of their special designs (macro) have not yet been surpassed. Let's say the Zuiko 20 f2 macro is something just cosmic.

      • Rodion

Are you sure that yellow thorium glass is used in this fifty-kopeck F / 1.8?
