Nikon Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical (abbreviated as Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G) is a good versatile lens for Nikon DX cameras. First of all, the lens is interesting in that it can use a wide angle of 16 mm focal length. In terms of EGF will be 24 mm. From 2008 to 2015, it was the only universal lens in the Nikon Nikkor DX series that was able to 'expand' to 16mm focal length. Only in July 2015, another lens with a similar focal length came out - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR.

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is considered a more advanced lens than the series 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-140 and is at about the same level as the series 18-200, 18-300 and 18-70... The only two more 'fancy' native universal lenses are Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF.

Assembly

A copy of this review was made in Thailand. To the touch Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is pleasant and weighty, its weight is about 500 grams. The lens uses common filters with a diameter of 67 mm. When handling the lens does not add up any negative feelings.

Please note that the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G on the bayonet side has a special rubber gasket, which is a sign that the lens has dust and moisture protection. Unfortunately, the exact level of protection of the lens from environmental influences is not specified anywhere on official sources.

The focus ring is plastic, and the zoom lens is rubberized. Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has metal bayonet mount. The retractable lens barrel consists of two sections, to the touch they are quite durable, without any backlash.

With frequent use, the lens may begin to suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame (trunk of the lens) under its own weight.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-39, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom ring is lost.

The Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G comes with a soft case CL-1015, and the lens itself comes in a small cardboard box with a characteristic Nikon coloring.

Diaphragm

Diaphragm lens consists of 7 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. Diaphragm closes to F / 22 by 16 mm and to F / 36 by 85 mm of focal length.

Unfortunately, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G cannot boast of good aperture.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 16 mm - F / 3.5
  • 24 mm - F / 4
  • 35 mm - F / 4.5
  • 50 mm - F / 5
  • 70 mm - F / 5.6
  • 85 mm - F / 5.6

Stabilizer

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a second generation VR stabilizer that can compensate 3.5 stops by shutter speed. In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 10-12 times longer than what the lens without a stabilizer requires.

The instructions for the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G lens indicate 4 stops (measurements by Nikon), and on the official website 3.5 feet (measured by CIPA). In any case, the stabilizer works well.

To enable / disable the stabilizer on the lens there 'VR ON / OFF' button. There is a 'Normal / Active' switch to select a mode. The stabilizer can operate in two modes: 'Normal' and 'Active'.

  • 'Normal' mode designed for most scenes and avoids movement when camera shake. 'Normal' mode can still track camera movement to create panoramas.
  • Active Mode most suitable for shooting when the camera can not only shake, but also move in different directions. Most often, it is advised to use this mode when shooting in motion.

The stabilizer itself works well. I was able to take pictures without grease and hard work at 85 mm focal length and 1/20 second. I always use the stabilizer in 'Active' mode.

Focusing

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G focuses quite quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - medium closer to high. On cameras D700 и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro the lens focuses tenaciously and does not release objects from the field of sharpness.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. The front lens does not rotate while zooming. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 38 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 4.6 magnification. Nikon Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale as well as labels for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates about 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus. Manual focus is easy.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode. You can turn on the 'M / A' mode and forget about this switch forever.

Compatibility and Features

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, although designed for Nikon DX cameras, but will work correctly with all Nikon digital SLR cameras (full list here).

When using the lens on Nikon FX full-format cameras with the image area 'FX format (36x24)' at all focal lengths, all focusing distances and all values aperture Strong vignetting or completely black edges of the image will be noticeable. Minimum vignetting available at 85 mm focal length, focus at infinity, and f / 5.6 aperture. Using a lens hood only enhances vignetting. Work in the 'Format FX (36x24)' mode is undocumented and I write about it purely for educational purposes.

If on Nikon FX cameras select 'Image area' -> 'Auto. DX Crop '->' On ', then after attaching a Nikon DX lens to such a camera, the camera will automatically use' DX Format (24x16) '.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Image quality

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G creates a sharp image in the center of the frame, even on open apertures. The corners and edges of the frame are slightly worse. The lens suffers from noticeable distortion at 16 mm focal length. The strongest vignetting is noticeable at 16 mm focal length and F / 3.5. Chromatic aberrations well fixed. The lens behaves well in backlight and creates a contrast image. Image quality is up to standard.

My experience

At one time, I really liked the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, but after a while, my love for this lens faded. I find it too overrated in terms of both features and price. At one time, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G was the only native alternative to expensive professional Nikon 17-55 / 2.8G.

I do not recommend changing models 18-105, 18-140, 18-200, and 18-300 on this lens. But if you have any of 18-70, 18-55, 18-135, then Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G will be a worthy replacement.

  • Olexandr

Goodnight. Well, after reading everything here from Arkady (many thanks to him for his enthusiasm in maintaining this blog and his not hefty ability in testing photographic equipment), a week ago I bought myself a slightly used Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8- 4E ED N. For now ... I'm playing. Interesting.

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

And what are your impressions of 16-80? What sharpness, color and focus speed?

  • anonym

Good afternoon, thanks a lot to the author for the blog!
Please tell me, will this lens be relevant on the Nikon D5600? I would like to take 16-80, but it seems too big for this carcass.

  • Victor

An excellent crop lens. Volumetric drawing, correct geometry, sharpness, color rendition, stub, compact ...

  • Vitaliy 59

18-70 sold. Replaced by 16-85. The best memories and pictures were about 18-70. What difference did I notice? Center sharpness at medium apertures is comparable. At the edges 16-85 wins noticeably. Color rendition suited me in both. At a speed of 18-70, perhaps a little faster, but it doesn’t matter to me. Oddly enough, but I feel the difference at the short end of 1 mm. VR- works well, most likely this was the main reason for the replacement. Landscapes are obtained with excellent quality. There is an opinion that portraits are not suitable. And I get just wonderful portraits. There was previously a tamron 17-50,2,8. Sold with pleasure. 50 mm is not enough for me to portrait. For the landscape, too, is not suitable, the edges are floating. At 2,8, of course, it is lighter, but it is used extremely rarely and sharpness drops.
The trunk certainly does not want to hold on. Holds only 16 mm. But there’s nothing to be done, perhaps, you have to put up with it. (When the lens is pointing down and the camera is shaking slightly) I can not imagine a further replacement of the lens. I do not want to use lenses with a plastic mount. There is fifty fifty / 50D, but the difference in sharpness is felt at 1,8% increase. So he is resting. In some special cases, you can change the lens, but the fix is not so convenient to use. As a rule, all opinions and mine are also subjective, because the lenses of the same model can differ markedly. But if there are a lot of identical opinions, then perhaps they can be heeded. There were two 18-105. I won't even change two 18-105s for one 16-85. Immediately a noticeably better image. Detail, sharpness, high-quality construction. 16mm is also a plus! True, the trunk is not so stable, but this is not the main thing. Just think - maybe the price is justified.

I watched this, I agree with the opinion of Arkady. Not a bad lens, often desired due to 16 mm and a fairly reliable design. At the same time, the aperture is not large, and according to the picture 18-105 it is not much worse (in my opinion, it is even better on some focal points). Yes, and 18-105 is more convenient for a set of focal lengths at a lower cost, albeit with a simplified design, including a plastic mount. For a close price of 16-85, you can pick up a tamron or sigma with F2.8, which is even more attractive. As a result, I did not take 16-85, also considering it overrated for myself.

      • Michael

Aperture 2.8 is not so big to choose it instead of the stabilizer, and the focal range of 18-50 does not suit everyone. I personally would prefer this lens to tamron-sigma 2.8. So I also do not understand, why is it overrated? Just dark and all

  • anonym

Thank you, Arkady, for your reviews. They are always interesting to read.

  • anonym

This is a wonderful 16-85 lens. Excellent sharpness across the entire field, even at an open aperture, and good color reproduction. Reliable construct, metal mount, protection against dust and moisture. Optimum size and weight. The second level stabilizer works perfectly. Clear shots succeeded up to 1 / 5-10 seconds. If we compare with the lenses 18-55, 18-105, 18-140, then 16-85 is the sharpest of them. Loses only at a price. There are tamrons and sigma with aperture of 2,8. But the range of focal lengths of 17-50 is still small, there is a clear gain from 16-85. Even 140, like 18-140, is not such a big argument against 85. But these lenses do not have 16mm at the short end. Modern high-quality matrices allow you to shoot with high ISO and low grain image. If there is little light in the room, there is a flash on the device and an additional one. In poorly lit rooms with aperture of 2,8, you will also have to raise ISO and use the flash.

Good day. I pick up the lens on the Nikon D7100 and stumbled upon such a NIKKOR DX 16–80 mm f / 2,8–4. What do you say about him. Will there be a review?

    • Arkady Shapoval

A good lens, the review will be, I do not know the truth, when.

  • Vitaliy 59

Hello to amateur photographers. From my experience:
    There were the following lenses: 18-55, 18-105, 55-200, 17-70,16-85,55-300, 50D
16-85 is a very good lens. In the comments I read that Arkady Shapoval used it at the time. But the love for him passed and switched to Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 (I do not quote verbatim, but the meaning is this) So I went along his path. Previously, it seemed to me that 50 and 85 were a sensitive difference. Comparing these two lenses, I was convinced that 50 is a tolerable decrease. But 2,8 aperture is good. In terms of sharpness, 17-50 / 2,8 is, in my opinion, somewhat sharper. Everything is fine in color. Here they mention 16–80. I didn’t have that. It may be good, but I do not like aperture 4, but I am silent about the price. I suggest to see my site https://fotosvs17-50.jimdofree.com/
Everything was going to go to full frame, but after such a bunch of me: 7100 and 17-50 calmed down. Of course, 17-55 / 2,8 is interesting, but without a stub it is not a hunt. It seems to me that I got a great copy of the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8. I do not think that the sharpness of 17-55 / 2,8 will be much better. 7100 is a good camera, stopped using the NET format. The differences (when setting 7100) I do not see. I use FastStone 6.4 and I have enough photoshop. Who cares, you can still see https://fotosvs.jimdofree.com/ for 16-85 Arkady thank you very much for this blog, It is interesting to read different opinions.

    • Igor

Good day. I looked at the photos you presented for comparison with the d600 from 24-120 and 7100 from 17-50. They show your bias. All photos on the FF were taken in backlight and it is not known what settings, whereas on a crop or in cloudy weather or with a light source at the back. Photography is primarily light, not a camera) I myself have a D7000 and a d750. More often I shoot on the crop at 24-120 or 24-70. But with FF, pictures are cleaner in noise and more able to play with DD. I used to have 7d and sigma 17-50. I tried Tamron 24-70 of the first version with VC, an order of magnitude better. On the crop, the Range 36-105 is preferable for me. SHU without blockages. Look at the sets of fixes. Basically it is 35, 50, 85. You have it all in one +105. Believe me, the received images are worth it to switch to optics for FF.

Hello everyone, my whole brain has turned, I choose between 18-140 and 16-85. I'm not a pro, and it seems that there are no strong coordination differences in the quality of images between these two lenses? And what is the difference in stabilization, are there differences?

    • anonym

There is a difference in quality, but if you don’t see it, take the one that is larger (18-140)

      • Dmitriy

Is it really about the size? Now I have a whale 18-55 and 1,8 35mm. Need a wagon, well, let's say for a vacation. I want to have sharp pictures, good colors.

      • Dmitriy

And I also want to know how the presence of more aspherical and low disperse lenses in 16-85 affects the quality of the photo? What is their meaning?

        • Serge

“I need a station wagon” and “I want to have sharp pictures, good colors” are incompatible concepts, alas.

          • Dmitriy

It is understandable that it is incompatible. I choose between specifically two lenses. And it is not strange on the Internet that many people want to make their choice between 18-140 and 16-85. Maybe there really isn’t much difference for the lover in them, do you want to get out of the way, take 140, do you want more to fit in the short one, take 16?

        • Denis

stabilization in 16-85 is worse than in 18-55 AF-P VR. yes, yes!
and all these lenses stand for a reason, there are almost no chromatic aberrations, and the colors are good (better than 18-55)

          • Dmitriy

Is the stub at 18-55 af-p better than 16-85? No error?

            • Denis

Yes, the AF-P has a better stabilizer

  • Andrei

Arkady hello! Tell me which lens is better on Nikon 3200 Nikon 35 or 16 on 85?

    • B. R. P.

Both are better. Different lenses for use, which is better depending on the shooting tasks.

      • Andrei

thanks for the answer! More for a vacation.

It depends on what you need - aperture ratio, especially at the far end, or a larger focal range. 16-85 is a universal lens for tourism, has a stab and is better suited as the only everyday lens. 17-50 is better if you have a photo session, for example, one of the main activities and you have something from the TV range (55-200, 85, 100). Everything from the task, better or worse, is rather subjective.

Good day. When there will be a review of the Nikon 16-80mm F2.8-4.0E ED AF-S DX VR Nikkor. Waiting for your opinion. I think how to replace the sigma 17-50 2.8.

    • Oleg

Arkady usually answers such questions - “Send me, there will be a review” =).

  • Oleg

From my own experience: yes, a good lens, sharp across the entire field and at all focal lengths, excellent stabilization, excellent color rendition ... but it's boring. Such is the correct one in everything, and the picture produces the same - correct and predictable.

    • Jury

That's when one of the two frames is blurred - it's unpredictable and not boring) But seriously, the assessment is “correct in everything, and the picture gives the same - correct and predictable” - the best considering its type and purpose. Or do you know more creative (not boring) 5x zooms?

Lens for DX cameras ... the focal point in recalculation will be 24mm ... ay? But does DX glass need to be recalculated for a crop?

    • B. R. P.

Hello ... new year! Again 25!

      • Jury

        probably 525 already :)

    • Valery A.

The focal length of all lenses must be converted to EGF for all crops, incl. soap dishes, telephones, as well as the middle frame, because the starting point is FF, 36 * 24mm. Then it will be clear that 24mm on FF, 16mm on a crop of 1,5, 5mm on a compact with a crop of 4,75 are the same EGF, respectively, they give the same frame width. By the way, if you attach this lens to a Canon, the EGF (frame width) will be 16 * 1,6 = 25,6mm, if on a lens with a crop of 2, then 32mm. And you say DX, DX it means gives a circle of light, covering the matrix 25 * 16mm (and less).

Will the lens from the review cope with a 24-megapixel sensor or 16 for it?

  • Then

At the beginning of the article, Arkady writes that the subject "... is better than 18-105 ..., at the level of 18-70 ..."
And at the end “... 18-70 should be changed to him, but 18-105 not ...”
    What's the catch???

    • Michael

At the beginning it is written about the lens class, that it is "advanced" as well as 18-70, and at the end the general impression and recommendations

    • Denis

18-70 with metal mount, distance scale, and fastest autofocus (real ring motor)
18-105 doesn’t have anything like that, but it has a stabilizer and optically it’s better
and 16-85 is the best of them

With frequent use, the lens may begin to suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame (trunk of the lens) under its own weight.

I recently bought such a lens with my hands. I noticed that if you start to zoom a little in the down position, the lens spontaneously rolls to all focal. How to fix it? And is it worth bothering? When fully retracted, it keeps dead.

  • Yuriy

Be happy to buy it? sigma 17-50 chi Nikkor 16-85? For the third time here I read Vidguki, I can't Virishity. Є Nikon 7100, є 35mm .. є 50mm - ale incoli is not versatile. Especially on the walls.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I would stick to this list in descending order: Nikon 17-55 / 2.8 -> Nikon 16-80 / 2.8-4E -> Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 OS -> Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC -> Sigma 17-70 / 2.8-4 C -> Nikon 16-85 G

      • Jury

Crazy for the joy! Obov'yazkovo, I'm speeding. Kindly, without buying 16-85 more.

  • Lev

Everything is fine ... no picture. Flat

  • Maksim

I would like to know how the old 16-85 DX and the new 18-55 AF-P on the D500 \ 7500 cameras relate. Does 16-85 give better quality and in what range (mainly at 2 / 3-4 / 3 stops) does it make sense for them to shoot in frame size “M”, or should we expect nothing besides expanding the focal range?
I think about it, because I often run into 55mm, and less than 18mm may not be needed at all. An open aperture is not needed at all: only the sharpness over the entire field of the frame is interesting. Who dealt with both lenses, tell me how things are when shooting landscapes.
