Nikon D600 review

For the opportunity Nikon D600 body review many thanks to Ivan Berdnik.

Nikon D600 review

Nikon D600 review

Nikon D600 is the first full-length amateur Nikon digital SLR camera. Prior to this, all full-frame CZK belonged only to a professional level. Nikon D600 is 'Full Frame to the Masses!'. The difference between the size of the matrix for type cameras APS-C Nikon DX and the size of the matrix for type cameras APS Nikon FXwhich the Nikon D600 belongs to is approximately 2.25 times. And believe me, in many cases matrix size really matters. True, a full-format camera requires only Fx lenses.

This is how the Nikon D600 camera looks from different sides without a lens (body) and with a lens (kit)

This is how the Nikon D600 camera looks from different sides without a lens (body) and with a lens 24-85 (kit)

The Nikon D600 has a 24,3MP sensor. This is a good indicator for a full-frame camera, I believe that about 20MP for full-frame cameras is quite enough for almost any photo task, and for those who need to print posters there are monsters. Nikon D800, Nikon D800E and digital backs. If you are a miser and count all the pixels in the resulting image from the Nikon D600, then you can count 24.160.256 pixels, which allows you to reproduce a photo of 6016 by 4016 pixels.

In the spring of 2013, Nikon already has 5 cameras with 24MP and two cameras with 36MP.

Example photo on Nikon D600

Before the release of the D600, only the Nikon D24x had a full-frame 3MP sensor, which, by the way, is already damn old, but the price of which does not fall at all. For me, the number of megapixels is practically not important. Personally, I’m even offended that manufacturers are increasing their number, and the noise level at high ISOs remains practically unchanged. Megapixels are not always as good as marketers assure, you can read more details in the section Battle of Megapixels.

Nikon D600 can work on ISO 100 to 6400 units and expand the value to Lo1 (equivalent ISO 50.) and up to Hi2 (equivalent ISO 25.600.) Here is the original example on ISO 6400 (noise reduction function is on). It's a sin to complain about the performance of the Nikon D600 at high ISO. The D600 has a lower level and a slightly different type of noise than my old lady Nikon D700.

Example photo on Nikon D600

Example photo on Nikon D600

With noise levels at high ISOs, the Nikon D600 is fine. True sorry that the Nikon D600, D800 and D800E have an ISO 6400 ceiling, older cameras could work at this value Nikon D700 и D3... It turns out that the pixels were added to the new cameras, but the ISO was forgotten. Only two models remain more efficient cameras in terms of high ISO for 2013 - Nikon D3s и D4that have a ceiling of ISO 12.800.

Example photo on Nikon D600

Example photo on Nikon D600. Measurement exposure in difficult conditions does not fail.

Nikon D600 uses the updated Nikon Multi-CAM 4800 focus sensor, this is an upgraded Nikon Multi-CAM 4800DX sensor, which can be found in Nikon D7000 и D5200. The camera uses 39 focus points, 9 of which are cruciforms. Unlike Nikon D7000 The new D600 can work with lenses with aperture up to F / 8.0. In practice, this means that the Nikon D600 focuses better in poor lighting conditions than D7000, D5200. I really don't like small viewfinder coverage with focus points. All the focus points of the Nikon D600 are in the center, which is not surprising, because here is just a modified focus system from a cropped camera. You can see more details about focus modules and their comparison here.

Many users have a choice between three Nikon D600 cameras, D700, D800 (E), such a plate may clarify the choice a bit:

For myself, I see no reason to switch from Nikon D700 on Nikon D600. Some may need video in the D600 and slightly more RAW processing due to better DD and lower noise. If the choice is the first full-frame camera, then, in my opinion, the D600 is an excellent option. When it comes to dynamic range, color depth, etc. in modern full-length cameras, I advise you to look here.

Despite the fact that the Nikon D600 camera has as much as 24 MP, with any RAW quality setting frame buffer, puts 15 frames in FX mode, 22 frames in DX mode. If you shoot in JPEG and turn off all the additional functions of software image enhancement, then 28 JPEG L frames in FX mode and 46 frames in DX mode are placed in the buffer. The buffer readings are just great for an amateur camera. The only negative is the inability to use a RAW file without compression. RAW is available with 12 or 14 bit color depth and with conventional or lossless compression.

The maximum shooting speed in any mode (with and without a booster) is 5.5 frames per second. This is enough for any type of shooting, it may not be enough for reporting, but the D600 is not a reporting camera.

The Nikon D600 has a nice viewfinder with 100% lens field of view and 0.7x magnification. It was pleasant enough for me to work with such a viewfinder, it is much more for the 'peephole' of amateur cameras like Nikon D3200, D40. In general, it is very pleasant to work with the camera. Settings and buttons are not very different from Nikon D7000. Dealing with the camera is not difficult.

Nikon D600 has a built-in focus motor, you can use any lens without a focus motor, for example, such inexpensive legendary lenses as Nikon 85mm F1.8D AF Nikkor и Nikon 70-210 F4 Nikkor.

From the pleasant moments in the Nikon D600:

  1. Measurement exposure performed using 2016 pixel like u D7000, D7100, D5200. About measurement exposure can read here.
  2. Function auto ISO works very well, the camera can automatically adjust the desired shutter speed depending on the installed lens.
  3. Two locks on the camera control wheel. This is very convenient, it really helps to avoid accidentally changing the shooting mode. I really missed such a thing on my old Nikon D90.
  4. Full HD video 1.920 x 1.080 30p, recorded in MOV format with the H.264 codec. Attention, sound recording is performed using a monaural microphone. You can buy an external stereo microphone for the camera. Video has a common problem with auto focus quality. Also, the Nikon D600 is not able to control the aperture value when shooting video. If full control over all the parameters when shooting movies is important, then you will have to look to the side Nikon D800.
  5. Support for older lenses AI-S type and any other lenses that can only be mounted on the camera.
  6. Two memory card slots SD (SDHC, SDXC, UHS-I). You can set up various methods of working with cards as your heart desires.
  7. System for cleaning the matrix from dust.
  8. Nikon D600 supports remote control of external flash units. I am a big fan of the system Nikon CLS
  9. Of course, the Nikon D600 supports high-speed 'FP' sync with external flash units. By the way, if you are looking for an extra flash, here my recommendations.
  10. A large 3.2-inch display, however, recently the number of dots in the new Nikon cameras has not changed and remains equal to 921,000. The display is the same as Nikon D800,D800E, D4.
  11. The case is half made of magnesium alloy, very similar to the case Nikon D7000.
  12. The camera has an additional monochrome display with which it is very convenient to control the camera and change the basic settings.
  13. USB, HDMI, Microphone in, 3.5mm headphone jack
  14. Battery EN-EL15, same as Nikon D7000, D7100, D800, D800E. Holds a charge well.
  15. Programmable buttons U1 and U2, which can be configured for different tasks.
  16. The camera supports automatic vignetting correction.
  17. Electronic level.
  18. Active D-lighting, bracketing exposure, ADL bracketing, bracketing white balance and HDR function
  19. Fine tune focus

What I did not like:

  • The center button is not programmable for instant zoom. After Nikon D700 Without this feature, I’m extremely uncomfortable working with the Nikon D600. It seemed a trifle, but it seriously ruined my nerves.
  • Not the entire body is made of an alloy of metals. The front part is made of polycarbonate.
  • Minimum excerpt 1/4000 s shutter Many inflate with '1/4000s' great trouble. But it’s not so scary, for example, Nikon D600 can dose using ISO 50 (Lo 1) and 1/4000 seconds as much light as Nikon D3S at ISO 100 (Lo 1) and 1/8000 seconds. By the way D1H can work with shutter speed in 1 / 16.000 seconds:).
  • When shooting video, you cannot control the aperture value. So far only Nikon D4, D800, D800E can afford full control when shooting video.

Personal experience
Nikon D600 is not so small and light as many people write about it. The camera is much larger than crumbs like D5100 or D3200. In general, the Nikon D600 is an excellent amateur camera, it is a pity that the Nikon D600 does not use 51 focus points as on older Nikon cameras, it is also a pity that not all of the camera body is made of metal alloy. But, of course, for that kind of money just cannot get a copy Nikon D4 in the housing from Nikon D7000 :). And Nikon added fuel to the fire, which covers a person’s head when choosing a camera. To new Nikon D7100 installed the updated module at 51 focus points, now many will puzzle over what to buy - Nikon D7100 or Nikon D600. I am often asked to indicate approximate prices for a particular photo equipment, Nikon D600 is still the cheapest Nikon full-format CZK:

All Nikon D600 Body prices

By the way, I personally wonder what is better when working with poor lighting, the updated focus module on the Nikon D600 or the good old module on Nikon D700, D3, D3s, D300, D300s. Personally, I am more inclined to the latter. During the time that I had the D600, I did not feel any serious differences in focusing accuracy when working with high-aperture optics. You can leave your ideas in the comments.

A popular resource for comparing cameras snapsort gave the Nikon D600 the maximum number of points - 100 out of 100. Attention: they say that the Nikon D600 has serious problems with the contamination of the matrix (video problem review) Most likely for this reason, on October 8.10.2013, XNUMX, Nikon released a new camera. Nikon D610 to replace the D600, in order to remove the poor reputation of the latter due to problems with the contamination of the matrix.

  • Basil

Arkady, tell me Nikon D600 allows you to use manual lenses,
let's say - Jupiter 37A, Helios 40 .., without the use of "dandelion"?
there is an adapter with a lens and without a "dandelion" I tortured "him" on Nikon D90 - focusing by the camera is not confirmed either by sound or by focus points ...
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it is written about it in the 5th paragraph of the section "From the pleasant moments in Nikon D600:"

  • Basil

Thanks Arkady, I somehow missed this 5th point, a lot of information, and I want everything at once ... hi.
Respect to you Arkady, so much useful information and so everything is clearly described. Thank you!!!

  • Alexander

But still, tell me: which is better - Nikon D600 or Canon 5D Mark 3 (Most are inclined that Nikon has a better picture)

    • anonym

Most Markovites will never trade their instruments for anything else for any price.

      • anonym

Yes ...))) There is such a))) You are right!

  • Svetlana

and if you turn your eyes from DSLRs to mirrorless ones. more compact)

  • Valera

    cool, prices added)

  • Vladimir

Guys, please advise in choosing a camera !! I read a bunch of reviews and now I can not decide between the D600 and D800! The difference in price is about 6000 UAH. While there is in stock D90 kit + 50 1 / 8G.
    While there are 2 thoughts:
1- D600 and the money saved is a good lens.
2- D800 is a carcass, and the lens is good later !!

    • anonym

better and more reasonable, if of course you are after a high-quality picture, buy yourself a lens, in your case it is a light strong, portrait wagon, shirik from the same series.
d90 is a good device, you will like the transition to d600 ff with truncated functionality vryatli, there is only a d800-megabyte from Nikon.

      • Vladimir

Yes, I would not say that the functionality is greatly reduced !!

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I would also not say that the functionality of the D600 is greatly reduced. For a person who switches to FF with smaller matrices, the functionality is very good.
Personally, I am puzzled by something else. For some time I have been trying to decide between 6d and d600, I almost decided that I would choose the D600, but now it stops a huge number of user reviews about the oil on the matrix. And Nikon's reaction to the problem: "Yes, there is a problem, but we solved it - just take and clean the oil."
Wait for d610, which supposedly will be without problems with oil, but it is not known when it will appear, or stop at 6d, for me this is a more important issue for now.

  • Vladimir

Today I took D600 myself !! A month was preparing to buy! Revised and re-read a bunch of everything! Everything was fine, but the reviews about the oil on the matrix were all reduced to 0 !! I went the other way: I called 10 Internet shops and 2 service centers in Kiev! Everyone had the same answer: half a year since the problem was fixed and there are no more complaints from customers at this moment! Then I went to Kiev without fear and doubt and took a camera to “Fotosale” !!! My copy is generally fresh - 08.2013 !!

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Accept your congratulations) And let the camera only make you happy ... And I will still be a little overwhelmed with the choice))

  • Vladimir

Unsubscribe, please, the owners of the D600! How is anyone with this after a run of 1000-2000 or more frames !!
For starters, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24–85 mm f / 3,5–4,5G ED VR + UV filter RODENSTOCK took the glass (as a gift for the promotion). I’ll make money, I’ll buy something more seriously :))
Moving on from D90! First impressions are great !! The difference in the picture is noticeable wow ... wow!

    • Oleg

Good evening! Mileage 26750 frames, normal flight. At 22 three spots, I did not blow it, maybe dust. Often I change the glass, although neatly. Very pleased with everything. Nothing came off or fell off. Pah-pah-pah. The camera is super!

  • Sergei

On the Internet, in particular American sites, information slips that Nikon is preparing for winter either the D610 or the D600s, are still not willing to take Nikon's position on his ff, and also technical problems to take the same Canon ff 5D, 5D Mark2, 6D , 5D Mark3 and Nikon 700,600,800, Nikon is clearly lagging behind, considering that the 700th was discontinued and in the remainder we have only two cameras, one unfinished and the other expensive, losing the market ...

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

According to nikonrumors d610 will be announced at the end of October. Nikon USA has already removed the d14 from the MAP list of minimum recommended prices since September 600th.

    • Denis

As of today, Nikon (in terms of FX format) has a camera that does not lag behind any others, this is the Nikon D3X. Therefore, the massive "armament" of the fifth Marks is observed ...

  • Vladimir

Have you seen the characteristics of the D610 ?! There will still be no important differences from the D600 !!! He will not D800 :). They will put WI-FI, GPS there, they will say that it seems that all the D600 bugs have been fixed, thrown in the price and you will have D610 !! Marketing and no more !!!

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Rather, it will even be shorter: “they will say that they seem to have fixed all the bugs of the D600, they will add a price tag” :)

  • Vladimir

    • Arkady Shapoval

      and what should change?

      • Vladimir

We will see :)))) While it is not clear !!!

        • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Yes, so far this is only part of the specifications. Though:

“The fact that the D610 body size will be the same indicates that this may really be exactly the same camera, just with improved shutter mechanism”

          Maybe it’s just that.)

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

      Thank you!

  • Vladimir

Colleagues who recently took the D600 in Ukraine ?! Interested in a serial number !! I have on my packaging the production date is 08.2013, the serial is 609xxx! Guys from the forum http://www.club-nikon.ru/ write that their numbers start with 805xxx! These are all purchases a week ago! Do I have a “gray” carcass ?! Nikon's official guarantee for 2 years !! I took in Kiev at “Fotosale”! The office is old, proven !! I took mine on 18.09.2013/14/XNUMX, XNUMX days for a return or exchange have not expired yet !!
    Who has any thoughts ?!

  • Vladimir

The question is being removed! Series 805xxx is not for the CIS! For the CIS 60hhhhh!

  • SHAH

If not for the CIS, then your guarantee is unofficial, but the left European, who does not channel in our country

  • anonym

    with us or with you)

  • Vladimir

Everything is normal with the guarantee, official!

  • anonym

Only for the CIS countries a year + year system has been developed. Roughly speaking, two years in total service. For all other countries there is a year warranty. So if your instruction is not in Ukrainian (for example) or the language of the coupon does not correspond to the state of your country, then the guarantee is not off. More precisely, it would be off only in Europe, with the seal of a European store on the check. But if you bought with such a guarantee in the CIS country and the seal of the corresponding store is on the check, then such a guarantee does not qualify as an official

  • Vladislav

Hello! Guys, I'm sorry, but I can’t understand this wild chase for a full frame. Please note that 36-24mm is a SMALL format in photography. The limited resolution of the film was the reason for the increase in the size of type 4.5 and this is just an average format. But the photo of a plate of completely cyclopean sizes is the only reason, an increase in the quality of the final photo. Modern technology allows you to create tiny matrices with a huge number of pixels, so sorry with resolution, everything is in order. And the angles of the field of view are easy to choose. In my opinion, this is pulling money out of the consumer and showing off photographers. Guys! do not fall for this marketing "alipuha" You are just getting your head

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Vladislav, no offense, but you “climbed on an armored car” :))
FF is naturally a conventional name, and besides this format, there are other larger ones that provide opportunities hundreds of orders of magnitude higher than FF. If the technologies used at Hubble allow you to photograph a huge number of distant galaxies, this is not at all a reason to consider your DSLR "marketing nonsense" and throw it into the trash can))
The size and design of the matrix is only one of the components of the equipment that affects the capabilities that a photographer can have.
It's like in a racing car - the result is determined primarily by the driver, but without technological components, the possibilities are sharply narrowed. The engine, transmission, even the temperature of the tires, all this individually is not decisive, but in combination, it gives a person great opportunities.
Do you want my example - I am just choosing a new camera (practically chose), exactly the one that suits me. This is FF. Simply because for me it is the optimal combination of the capabilities of the equipment, its dimensions, with my capabilities and preferences and needs. If you are led by marketers, then your gaze will fall on compact mirrorless cameras with small matrices and capabilities "the same as those of large DSLRs")) But they do not suit me, just because even the most advanced compacts are not equal in capabilities to FF DSLRs (in all its pluses and minuses, but there is no full parity), plus the compactness is relative - a compact with a good lens is not so compact, but you have to carry a purse for a “compact” or a bag for a DSLR - it's almost the same for me. Not to mention the cost - compacts that can partially compete with FF DSLRs are often more expensive)
Summary: I dare to reassure you and assure you - we do not give in, we make a choice based solely on our opinion :))

  • Vadim

Apparently Vladislav did not shoot with practically different matrix formats, so he put forward a new theoretical direction about matrices, pixels, different formats and the conspiracy of manufacturers of photographic equipment. Full frame is certainly not the ultimate dream. There are digital cameras with medium format sensors. Only not everyone can buy this. And is it necessary ....? But remember Vladislav, there is such a well-known and rechecked law: THE GREATER THE PHYSICAL SIZE OF THE MATRIX, THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURE IS BETTER. And while this law is in place, camera manufacturers will mercilessly profit from us.

  • Vladislav

Guys! I'm just talking about the principle of reasonable sufficiency, I'm not talking about any conspiracy either. Yes, a 36-24mm matrix is better than a 23-15mm, but not so much better to pay 10-15 times more for it. And the fact that photographers like to show off the size of cameras and their matrrrrrits is also the place to be, this does not apply to you personally Vitaly and Vadim (I am not personally familiar with you), but my friends from St. Petersburg are VERY proud of their FF cameras. As for racing cars, then at one time Schumacher put your balid on the runway next to the F-15 fighter, and so, the F-15's ADVANCED capabilities DIDN'T HELP, Schumacher furnished a combat aircraft on his “tiny” car, (on GDP, of course ) and the traction of the F-ki is about 50 times more than that of a sports car. The EXTENDED CAPABILITIES and SIZES did not help. Well, about the formats. I shot in different formats, probably everything that exists in nature (except for the Hubble formats), and therefore I say with confidence - FORMAT does not affect (if I may say so) the masterpiece of your pictures if the pens grow out of the ass, no FF will not help. I'm not talking about you guys, of course, maybe you are photo-wizards !!!! With fiery photographic greetings from St. Petersburg.

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Vladislav, the example with the F-15, this is just an "experience", suitable only for attracting attention. The difference in weight between the F-15 and the light sports car is not comparable to the difference in traction. And all the more, we cannot compare the method of implementing thrust. Two identical cars with different transmission settings will accelerate differently. Two devices with different types of engines and operating principles, this is just a comparison of a whale with an elephant))) Strongly we nofftopped with figurative examples)

Different people perceive certain technical features differently. For some, the type of engine or matrix is a fetish, the main reason for ownership. For some, it is a technical feature that provides certain opportunities. On this site it is often said (and first of all the owner of the site) that the skills of the photographer are important first, then the lens and only then the characteristics of the camera ... I agree with that, but nevertheless, the characteristics of the camera are also important. Is the difference in price comparable to the difference in matrix capabilities? It seems to me that this is exclusively a matter of subjective attitude.
Guitarists, recognizing that the sound depends primarily on the performer, can also break lances in disputes about the difference in cost and sound. Gibson Les Paul Studio costs $ 1000. A 1958 Les Paul Reissue can cost four times that. So people ask questions - is the sound four times better))) there is a difference, but everyone's ears are different))) and how can you measure the difference in aesthetic perception? ))

With cameras similarly. The principle of reasonable sufficiency itself is an exclusively subjective concept.
Larger matrices themselves do not stamp masterpieces)) but they provide quite significant advantages in comparison with smaller matrices. Fact. Whether the photographer will be able to take advantage of these opportunities or not, whether they are needed in practice or will only entertain the ego, depends on the photographer. IMHO)

      Best regards,

      • Valery A.

        Applause, shouts of "bravo"!

    • Lynx

      “Photographic” - pompous detective shkolota.
Sobsno, this can close the discussion with the great champion of crop. )))

I agree with Vitaly. On my own I will only add that I bought a full frame only because of the opportunity to shoot at night or in bad moments in the world. And of course, as a person who was born in the USSR and lived in Soviet times, I have such a trait as pride in my full-frame toy. Although, now the people can not be surprised with anything …….

Yes, the oil on the matrix has deprived this device of 80 percent of buyers. Is this really an accident? An expensive toy, it was tested at the stand ... Maybe someone doesn't want to sell a full-frame camera at a lower price? Will buyers now be looking at the D800, or will they leave Nikon altogether? Full-frame Pentax K-3 hits the market

Dust on the matrix is an eternal problem for all DSLRs! Sooner or later, every owner of a camera will come across this! As for the D600 (and not only), none of this builds a tragedy! People successfully clean the matrix and live enjoying photography !! Yes, of course it's a shame that such expensive devices suffer from such a problem! Remember the problem of stretched (peeled off) rubber bands on expensive carcasses and lenses! Despite all this, people still buy DSLRs!
Sam bought a D600 + 24-85 3.5-4.5 a month ago (there was simply not enough money for the best optics, but that’s all in the future).
After D90 - just heaven and earth! I have already shot ~ 3000 frames! I looked at the dust (oil) on the matrix, but there are a couple of oil spots! They are visible only on the f / 22 aperture! I don’t take pictures at such apertures, I don’t bother! After each photo session, I'm not lazy to raise the mirror and blow the matrix with a pear !! I hope that there will be no concrete clogging of the matrix in this way, and if it does, I will clean it with a wet method without any problems !! The experience is already quite good!
So guys, do not bother! Take a picture in pleasure and take care of technology (like me :)) and you will be happy !!!

    Who cares:

    Good afternoon!
Please tell me if in it AF Fine-Tune an option for eliminating the back / front focus of the lens as in D800

If so, is it somehow different from the same option in the D800?
Will he remember the settings for each lens?

    Thank you!
