Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D

The Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D is a fairly old stock zoom lens from film cameras.

Please note that under the name Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D, there are two lens models:

  1. MKI, presented in this review, 1993-1995. The first copies were released in Japan, the rest in Thailand. A copy from the 'Made in Japan' review.
  2. MKII, 1995-1999, with an updated housing design and optical design. Visually it differs from the first version with a narrow plastic focus ring and a plastic mount. Overview can be viewed here.

Rumor has it that there is also a third version of the lens, similar to the MKII, but with a metal mount. In general, the Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D is akin to modern full-time (kit) lenses for modern digital cameras, so you should not expect something stunning from the small Nikon 35-80mm.

The lens is very compact and lightweight, in the optical design there are only 6 elements in 6 groups with one aspherical element. By the way, the MKII version has a different optical design. Nikon 35-80mm even shorter Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED AF-S DX Nikkor... The front filter is 52mm in diameter and the lens weighs just 255 grams. The Nikon 35-80mm itself is well assembled, you can immediately feel the old solid Japanese lens.

The lens has only 2.29x zoom when used on Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be equal to 52.5-120mm. I do not recommend such a lens for Nikon DX cameras.

The lens has fast auto focus. The minimum focusing distance is 0.35 m. There is no focus mode switch on the lens, to turn off autofocus you need to use the lever near the camera mount. The focus ring rotates 90 degrees, the ring is rubberized. Manual focus is easy. The lens has a focus distance scale and an infrared shift marker for 35mm. When focusing, the front lens rotates and moves forward. When zooming, the front lens does not rotate, but the trunk of the lens walks in a wave-like fashion. This is not the most convenient lens for all sorts of special filters. 7-blade aperture.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Exact list Nikon DSLR cameras without a built-in focus motor, on which this lens will not focus automatically:

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

You will find a lot of useful information on the types of cameras and lenses Nikon here.

Important: the lens has an aperture control ring. In order for the lens to start working normally on modern digital SLR cameras, you need to set the f / 22 value on the lens and click on the special switch near the aperture control ring. After such a manipulation, the aperture can be controlled from the camera, in more detail in the section on Non-G type lens.

Conclusions

Nikon AF Nikkor 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6D is a nice little robust guy for full-frame cameras. It costs a penny, it works very well. It can be an addition to the standard set of lenses due to its small dimensions. In general, the old 'D' line lenses with an orange stripe for macro have good design and functionality.

Some craftsmen remake this lens under the macro. They say it gives a very sharp, juicy picture with a nice picture in the blur zone. I don’t know how true this is, but there are such rumors.

    • Vladimir

I redid from 35-70 to macro. The result is awesome (I have never seen equal in macro)

      • pilotkins

And let the technology take interest.

        • Victor

I shoot them through the macro rings. The result is really awesome.

        • Ilya

With a reverse ring at 35mm and f8, the macro is almost 2:1 and very sharp with a good depth of field.

  • Boris

I'd love to know your personal opinion on the Nikkor lens
    28-70 / 3,5-4,5. I hope someday you will meet him ...

    • Sashko

Mav kolis such, here for 2 times I sold ... zamaliy (by size, then the smallest in kitovsky), on the D300 it is not enough, on the D90 it is singingly buv bi for the most time. a picture for a penny, so vin vartu with a bang, plus yak not yak macro конструк, constructive superb (in me it is a Japanese), autofocus of average performance, on a very critical sharpness no worse, I want to stop / two prikrivati ... .. smartness up to zhovtikh colors.

    • Denis

I have one in a box. Nothing extraordinary, sharpness is normal, colors too. Main plus compactness

  • Alex

In comparison with the reviews of Soviet lenses, this is just rubbish from the pictures.

    • Novel

On the long end a little soap. But consider the shooting conditions. In cloudy weather, few will show themselves well. Normal zoom.

Here's what's interesting. What older lenses are prized for is, in fact, imaging defects. Someone turns yellow, someone has a vignette, someone's background swirls, somewhere the sharpness falls to the edge. And what modern lenses are created for - reliable image transmission - is considered more a disadvantage than an advantage. And then the contrast turns in Photoshop, colors wrap in and so on ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Alex, This is a fallacy.

  • Igor

I agree) By the way, for some reason, Soviet glasses are also much prettier than Japanese zooms. Perhaps nostalgia and perhaps the right choice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

"Soviet glasses than Japanese zooms" :)

  • Novel

Good afternoon, why don’t you recommend using it on dx cameras? I have d80. Is something wrong with the picture?

    • Vadim

"On Nikon DX cameras the lens EFR will be 52.5-120mm"
      Inconvenient focal distances for crop.

  • zinander

A person is so arranged that he loves a carrot from a neighbor's garden (to his taste). This is explained by the fact that the Lord, creating a person, endowed him with the need to exchange bioenergy with other people. Therefore, a worm from another vegetable garden is still tastier. (Ps And the fact that the Soviet ones are better is a fact.
Compare at least according to Volosov, there are specific rulers for all the main imported glasses (...). In general, it is a golden reference book "Photographic Optics" by Volosov.

    • Oleg

Are you bored and have nothing to write?

  • zinander

No, it's just a shame for the state.

  • AgentSmth13

Yesterday I bought one, put it on my D7100, happy as an elephant. Sharpness is excellent, focus is fast.

    • Denis

      portrait)

  • Nicholas

    The lens is just great.

  • Alexander

    I got almost nothing.
I use paired with Sony 6500, happy as дов.
I was pleased with the design, although the lens is a zoom, the dust does not suck, for 15 years it is transparent as a tear, I was very surprised by this fact, although I carry it in my pockets)!
Another plus is the very small stroke of the focus ring, it feels like 15-20 degrees, which is very small and very convenient to quickly focus with the handles.
The lens does not yellow, does not green, the sharpness is not ringing, everything is in moderation, I use 70% for bw shooting! Not going to sell))

  • Stanislas

I have one with a metal mount. Snatched today at a delicious price 😁

Arkady hello! Can you send the original pictures to me by mail or in some other way?
