Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical review

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical - great small versatile lens for cropped cameras Nikon DX. It was the first zoom lens for Nikon DX cameras, introduced back in 2004 with a camera Nikon D70... I can assume Nikon did their best to make their first crop wagon good. Anyway, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is one of the oldest lenses in Nikon DX format. To replace it was later released Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical, which turned out to be worse in general than 18-70mm.

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is a good all-rounder, its EGF is 27-105 mm. This range of focal lengths is very often used on cropped cameras. Lens fit for any simple photo tasks.

The lens has internal focusing - When zooming and focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Lens autofocus is surprisingly fast... The lens even has a focusing distance scale, which is often a luxury for a budget lens. Also, the lens has a 'M / A - M' focus mode switch. In the 'M / A' mode, automatic focusing with manual focus priority is available - this means that manual focusing is always possible without having to move the lens to the 'M' position.

Unlike many lenses of the Nikon DX series, such as 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-200, etc. Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G uses a large and powerful focus motor ring type.

Funny but even more advanced zoom lenses by type Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor и Nikon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor do not have 'M / A' focus mode.

In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 120 degrees, as for a whale lens, manual focus is surprisingly convenient. The zoom ring is rubberized, but the focus ring is not. The minimum focusing distance is 38 centimeters, which allows you to shoot macro with an increase of 1: 6,3.

Bokeh lens. The rounded aperture blades make almost even circles in the blur zone.

My copy has come a long way in life, after which the zoom system got a little loose. The lens itself is made quite high quality, it even has a metal mount. By the way, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G will automatically focus on all Nikon camerassince the lens has a built-in focusing motor SWM. I used NIkon 18-70 mm on cameras without any problems Nikon D40, D40x и Nikon D80.

Optical design of Nikon 18-70nn AF-S

The lens consists of already 15 elements in 13 groups, moreover, one element is aspherical, and three elements are made of special ED low-dispersion glass. I believe that for a whale lens, the presence of such a number of special elements that can improve image quality is a very serious indicator. You can read more about all the optical circuits of Nikon DX lenses. here.

If you choose a relatively cheap universal zoom, perhaps the following plate will be useful in this:

NIkon 18-70mm AF-S stands out for its aperture F / 4.5 at maximum zoom position. Aperture at F / 4.5, 1,55 times more than F5.6. 2/3 stops of aperture gain are not so much important for faster shutter speeds as for comfortable sighting and autofocus. You can read more about focusing at different maximum values of the F number. here, but you can read how to take pictures without hand blur here.

Sample Photos

All photos in the first two galleries without treatment. Only reduced size to 3 megapixels and imprinted data from EXIF. The image from the lens suffers from severe distortion and vignetting at 18mm. Sharpness is not the best, but quite normal for such a lens; sharpness at the corners of the frame drops noticeably. But the lens perfectly holds back light. Due to the 7-petal diaphragm with rounded petals, it is difficult to achieve star effect with strong light sources.

My thoughts are:

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is much better than Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical и Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM Aspherical... Used cost Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is mere pennies. For example, at one time I bought myself a Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G for only 130 USD, it became a universal lens for home use on my cropped cameras. I've changed Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon on NIkon 18-70, because Tamron in 2 years just crumbled into pieces, and I have no regrets about it. True, my copy of the NIkon 18-70 was not as sharp as expected. When choosing such a lens, be careful, as there are lenses with different image quality. Nikon DX Lens Considerations here, and a list of all Nikon DX lenses can be viewed here.

The masters who repair the lens claim that the Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G built-in focus motor is noticeably better than the Nikon 18-55 (all models), Nikon 18-105, Nikon 18-135.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon DX cameras. The lens has a good price / performance ratio and fast internal autofocus. Many amateur photographers bypass this old man, but as practice has shown, the Nikon 18-70mm is a really good lens.

18-70 sold. Replaced by 16-85. The best memories and pictures were about 18-70. What difference did I notice? Center sharpness at medium apertures is comparable. At the edges 16-85 wins noticeably. Color rendition suited me in both. At a speed of 18-70, perhaps a little faster, but it doesn’t matter to me. Oddly enough, I feel the difference at the short end of 1 mm. VR- works well, most likely this was the main reason for the replacement. Landscapes are obtained with excellent quality. There is an opinion that portraits are not suitable. And I get just wonderful portraits. There was previously a tamron 17-50,2,8. Sold with pleasure. 50mm is not enough for me to portrait.

    • Jury

Vitaliy, on which camera did you compare these lenses?

    • Dima

Firstly, 2 mm and not 1. At a wide angle, this is a very, very noticeable difference. On a telephoto, 10-15 mm is not as significant as 2 mm per shu. Secondly, at 85mm, portraits a priori will not be bad even if the glass is not fast. And by the way, not a word was written about his stub.

  • Vitaliy 59

The masters who repair the lens claim that the built-in focusing motor of the Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is noticeably better than the Nikon 18-55 (all models), Nikon 18-105, Nikon 18-135.
Question: is it better in terms of accuracy and stability from frame to frame focus or reliability, durability? I wonder if he focuses more precisely on 18-105?

  • Michael

Arkady, “The lens repairmen claim that the built-in focusing motor of the Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is noticeably better” - here the link to the article with focusing motors is broken.

  • koba

I am very sorry, but in the article I talk about this lens as a "budget lens", and there are some surprises about its very fast autofocusing. This is simply not true! What kind of "bizarreness" can we talk about if the company initially sold it for $ 900 and positioned it as a top-end reporter for cropped cameras. Its replacement is not the pop 18-55, but the current top-end 16-80. This is one of the few cropped lenses with a full-fledged circular ultrasonic motor of a large diameter, so it focuses at lightning speed.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Considering that it is not produced now (it has not been produced for many years), it costs a penny in the secondary market and is a budget solution.

I liked the photos from this lens in your review. I found it on AVITO for 2500 rubles. Received yesterday. All in the dust inside was without gum and front disc on the lens. Well-worn pretty. Not focused on a distance of 50 to 70 mm.
Found a video on YouTube about cleaning this lens. I cleaned it. At the same time, I wiped the magnetic autofocus tape and tightened the sensor spring. At the same time, I discovered that the front lens was not screwed into the bargain - fortunately that it did not fall out on the way home.
The lens started working normally. It looks more impressive than that of the standard Nikon D40 lens (by the way, she is also the goddaughter of the author of this site, bought also at AVITO for 4000 rubles with a mileage of 16300. The owner is a girl, but she was treated like a pig - she barely cleaned it up).
I ordered a filter on Aliexpress to hide the shakiness in the front (I think I should print a ring with inscriptions on the printer and place it under the filter).
My relatives and I like the photos, and no one swears at them because of the size when uploading to various Internet services :-)
I use it outdoors. Indoors I have no equal in my inventory Sony nex 5T - a camera that takes divine photos and videos. Also with AVITO for 10000 rubles per whale.
The first Canon 550D camera now lies more. I bought a fool that supposedly good videos from him to shoot for blogs. Nonsense is complete and unnecessary.
In addition, after Sonya and Nikon, I can't look at his photo - for some reason, all photos are blurry with any lenses (the most expensive was 85mm 1.8). I am delighted with the colors of his JPG, but there is no sharpness - it's a shame.
Thanks to the author of the blog for seducing the weak in the photo.

  • Vladimir

In my copy, for some reason, the left side of the frame is blurry at slow shutter speeds. (More than 1/200). Maybe someone also has such a problem? Or does someone know how to solve it? Thank you in advance for your help.

  • redcat

Hello. Finally confused, help, who can do anything;))))) recently we got the coveted DSLR, bu Nikon d80. Lens only helios. Very beautiful, but very difficult :(, as for the zero level. Advise what to take from af, if the priority is shooting dynamics, 70% is indoors (house, school, concerts, sports), but 30% is nature, it's awesome we have city sights, street shows. Is this better or fix 35 / 2,8 ?? Or 18-105 in general? The budget is very limited ...

    • Michael

35 f / 1.8 probably meant. It is better than the subject. Shooting dynamics and a small budget are mutually exclusive factors. It is not very convenient to shoot the dynamics with a fix. 18-105 is not a bad option, but in the dark (home, school) it will not be enough. You may need to buy a flash for it. Usually, in your 70%, they recommend Sigma 17-50 2.8.

      • Valery A.

I would also say that 35 / 1,8 DX, as a regular fix, and to it 18-55 ED II (without VR) for landscapes, etc.

        • redcat

And tell me, pliz, how 35 / 1,8 copes with relatively large groups of people (children :)))

      • redcat

Yes, of course I was mistaken, 35 / 1,8. For some reason, I'm afraid to take a third-party lens with the first lens, suddenly there will be some conflicts with the camera? Sigma is really so good for my diagnosis that you can take it for a while as the only one?

        • Michael

          https://radojuva.com/2018/02/sigma-dc-18-50-2-8-ex-macro-hsm/
I myself did not have this, there is only sigma 10-20 from the same era. There are no problems with the old Sigmas on this camera. Fits as a single lens. 35 DX is a stock lens, it will be enough for most tasks. How many are relatively large groups of children? 5? 10? fifteen? And where to shoot them? Suitable for school classes. For dynamics, you run up - you can estimate by Helios. If you agree to jump and run for each frame, then 15 is better.

          • redcat

The group is 20 people, on stage, on courts and on excursions, on the street and in museums (where the flash is not always flashing), screeching and jumping up and down :)). Six at most fit into helios, and at the same time the background is completely blurred, which I don't always need. And running, jumping, crawling is not a question, the question is to turn the mechanics, and also to think where to turn :))). That is, after all, 35 / f1,8, right?

            • anonym

If 50 people fit into 6mm, then they will not fit into 35mm 20. And blurring the background can be eliminated only by closing the diaphragm, then again the aperture is not needed. 18-105 is a good stabilizer, but the movement of children will not stop. So that 17-50 / 2.8 or this.

            • Michael

For 20 people, 35mm will be narrow, better look at sigma

              • redcat

Here! Thank you all very much, clarified! I knew they would help here! :)

            • Yaroslav

35 / 1,8 is a good thing for full-length portraits, but not for group photos. Where 6 people will fit into Helios, 35 people will fit in 1,8 / 10. If you want 20 to fit in, you will have to go very far.

  • Paul

Please advise what is better to take instead of the kit “AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm” or “AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm”

    • Pokemon

Sigma 17-50 / 2.8 (if there is a lot of money that Nikkor 17-55 / 2.8 has nowhere to put), or for growth, under the full frame sigma 24-70 / 2.8 ex dg.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED is enough for group photos and even for portraits, it is better to have knowledge of composition, lighting and shooting techniques. But if you take an expensive lens and compare it with a cheap one - having no “clue”, then you will be deeply disappointed for the money and time spent.

  • Ruslan

Very grateful to Arkady for your site. For several years I’ve been shooting with this lens on the D80, I am satisfied with its work and quality. Now I bought a d7000 with a whale of 18-105. I want to sell the d80, but I can’t choose which zoom to keep, at 18-105 the stub and range seduces, but I have not convinced myself to grow from 18-70. Your opinion is very interesting, as well as the experience of other people.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Take a little on 18-105 and see what's what

  • nashua

From 18-70 there was a double impression. On the one hand, optically it is more interesting than 18-55, and structurally LOOKS more solid (metal bayonte, gaskets ...)
But on the other hand, the reliability of the lens turned out to be very low. One lens unit of the lens, rather heavy, is mounted on a very weak "spider" of milumin. And in general, with not even a strong blow, his legs break. Not always everything, but sometimes 1-2. The lens unit skews, the sharpness is not over the entire frame, infinity may disappear. I repaired two of these lenses, and then there is no desire to use such a lens. Probably due to unreliability, the lens was discontinued.

    • Denis

there is no sense in these gaskets, if the trunk of several plastic parts without any seals, and dangles while

  • RA4ADF

In my opinion, the lens is highly overrated. Despite the "professional" look, ring motor and metal mount, the optical quality has a very wide spread. IMHO, stronger than whale plastic.
Of the four copies that were in my hands, only one had an acceptable sharpness and lack of front / back focus. True, the lenses are age-related. I do not exclude that the parameters worsened with time.

  • Waldemar

Thanks to Arkady for the review, and in general - for the work done with the site. Thanks to him, I chose 18-70 instead of the deceased staff 18-55 VR. Yes, the lens is old, my copy is also from repair (I took it on Avito, the seller honestly warned). But the harshness is just fire. Instant focusing (used 18-55; Nikkor 18-105; Tamron 70-300). For your money - must have.

  • Help choose

    Good day! Help the newbie!
    What will be sharper: Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G or Sigma 17-50 / 2.8?
    I will use on D70s or D80.
Another such moment - there are quite a few 18-70s on Avito with dead motors.
Are they not very reliable? Does Sigma 17-50 have a more reliable motor?

I would like to write again about the focusing motor of this lens. Dear Andrey also writes about this, saying that he is much better there than at 18-55. I must say that it is not “much better”, and there is nothing in common between them. There is a real ring ultrasonic motor. Such motors in Nikon cropped zooms are only in lenses: 16-85 VR, 12-24 / 4, 17-55 / 2.8 and this one. Everything. All the rest have cheap and slow motors. The cost of this lens when it came out was $ 900 and was intended for reportage photography, so a real ultrasonic motor was built in there. It has two problems - sharpness drops slightly at the edges at open apertures (by the way, this is not a very big problem, it is not needed at open apertures), and there is also no stabilizer. But the price of $ 130 now for such a lens is just very good, together with the $ 300 D150 it will give beginners or people with a very limited budget the opportunity to have professional equipment, which I personally dreamed of in 2008, passing by photo shops in China, when such a kit cost about $ 2500!

    • Denis

there is no sense in the ring motor in this lens, which has back focus all the time
and the trunk usually hangs, and there is no protection from dust on the side of the trunk, even as primitive as in 18-55

      • koba

that is, all lenses have back focus? How can it be? It also depends on the camera, as far as I know. The trunk hangs in many lenses, but it does not affect anything. I say this because recently one of my acquaintances, a Chinese photographer, showed his new photo album published here with amazing photos, and as it turned out, most of them were shot on the D300 with this lens, it is already shabby (like the camera itself ), enjoys more than 10 years in a variety of conditions and is very pleased with them, and most importantly, receives excellent photos today. And how did he deal with back focus? By the way, it is required to align the camera and lens even for super expensive kits, of course, maybe he did it once, but what prevents others from doing this? By the way, he has a protective rubber on the mount, and it is hard to believe that in the remaining parts he is completely unprotected, he was created for reporting, which means for various operating conditions, that’s why they built in dust and moisture protection rubber. And the plastic from which it is made on the head is better than the same 18-55. Due to the speed of autofocus, the UN more often than others broke down, but they repair it quite easily, and the number of lens breakdowns does not exceed 10%. 130 dollars is the price that if it goes bad in a few years, you can just throw it away and take another one. And in a few years he will manage to make a lot of excellent shots in the hands of a good photographer or a beginner, who will then buy 17-55 / 2.8 for $ 550.

I bought 2 or 3 pieces with ebay from the Japanese (I forgot the exact amount), they were like new and everyone had back focus on a wide angle.
70mm less. checked on different carcasses. then sold at a discount)
I didn’t notice problems with sharpness, one trunk didn’t stagger at all (which I bought first), the second I tightened the screws, it became better
white balance in cold colors is shifted
the picture is more interesting, of course, than 18-55. but in general I use 16-85, it’s 70mm darker than 18-70, the latter has a better portrait

        • Denis

I’ll also clarify that it was not possible to adjust the internal chamber (however, I didn’t try hard) to adjust so that the focus on the wallpaper with the picture was focused exactly. all the other lenses that I had, this test passed without any adjustments, including the old 18-55

It is rather due to the fact that there are very few living specimens now, they were driven to the fullest.

    Do-it-yourself repair 18-70 / 3.5-4.5:

It was like that. Not sharp. The trunk dangled strongly, plus there was a bunch of dust inside. I cleaned it from dust, pulled the trunk up, but I could not put up with the lack of sharpness.
Sold for 4k rubles, and then not immediately :)
Do not take it on the Internet without turning it in your hands before buying. Replaced by 18-200 - heaven and earth.

Arkady, in the plate with the seven recommended zooms in the 4th line 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR should not be ED

Can anyone tell me which one to use for this glass (18-70) which is better to choose a high-aperture fixture for taking family photos and portraits from 35 and 50 nikkor (f 1,8g)?

  • Korg

Hello guys! Tell me which one universal lens to buy? I want it to be sharp, reliable, fast enough autofocus and not expensive.
    I choose between these (18-70), 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200.
There are many models, thoughts are confused)
You also discussed sigma 17-50 like.
In general, I will be grateful if you direct it to the "true path")
    Thank you in advance.

    • Korg

I will add. At 18-70, the sharpness was impressive at such a low price, but since the lens is old, there is a chance that you will get a problematic option.

      • B. R. P.

From relatives, either this, 18-70, or 18-105. But Sigma 17-50 2,8 is steeper in the picture. But more expensive. Sigma 17-70 is also not bad. There are reviews on this site.

        • Korg

That is, in the picture 18-105 is the same as 18-140 and 18-200? Only okusny different and the price?

          • B. R. P.

As a rule, the higher the zoom ratio, the worse the quality.

    • Igor

18-70 and 18-105 are the best for their price. The 18-105 has better sharpness and stabilization, while the 18-70 has a faster autofocus and is lighter at the long end.

18-140 and 18-200 as a picture do not differ much from 18-105. They have better build quality than the 18-105, and a little more functionality. But they are much more expensive. A bundle of standard zoom and telephoto will come out much cheaper, but the possibilities will be the same.

Therefore, if there is no money, then 18-70 or 18-105. If there is, then sigma is 17-50 or 17-70.

18-200 and the like only if you really need the entire focal range in one body, and are ready to put up with the modest quality of photos and immodest dimensions.

      • Dima

        18-105 piece G.

If you choose according to the quality of the picture, then Nikons 18-55VR, 18-105,18, 135-XNUMX, they all have the same picture, of average quality, I can say for sure, I disassembled them all, made minor repairs, so I had to shoot a lot with them ,check..

Old Nikon 18-55 without a stub is a little better in color than this trinity, but I didn't have 18-140, and 18-200, so I can't say anything about their picture ...

Arkady's photos from 18-70 on the D80 turned out good, all the colors are contrasting, without color haze, I think that this color cannot be obtained for the three lenses described above, so it turns out that 18-70 is better than all of them ...

  • Konstantin

Tell me, for an amateur, if there is a choice between 18-135 and 18-70, which one should you prefer? There is no specific priority in shooting - these are landscapes and portraits, family photography, in general, purely amateur photography.
    Thank you.

    • Oleg

Of the two, I would pick 18-70, even though 18-135 is longer.

  • Konstantin

A couple of days ago I bought 18-70, well, I just wanted to! :) I have 16-85, sigma 17-70, so this one is never inferior to them in picture quality! For summer walks along the boulevards or hiking in forests and forests, it is enough. There is a small back-focus, but this is solved by the hardware (D300S) adjustment through the menu, minus 4, and the focus is normal! :) Such glass simply must be!

  • Ivan

Hello, does it make sense to change the AF-P Nikkor 18-55 mm 1: 3.5-5.6 G VR for more focal lengths?

    • Ivan

In my opinion, there is no point in changing.
