Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical review

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical - great small versatile lens for cropped cameras Nikon DX. It was the first zoom lens for Nikon DX cameras, introduced back in 2004 with a camera Nikon D70... I can assume Nikon did their best to make their first crop wagon good. Anyway, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is one of the oldest lenses in Nikon DX format. To replace it was later released Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical, which turned out to be worse in general than 18-70mm.

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is a good all-rounder, its EGF is 27-105 mm. This range of focal lengths is very often used on cropped cameras. Lens fit for any simple photo tasks.

The lens has internal focusing - When zooming and focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Lens autofocus is surprisingly fast... The lens even has a focusing distance scale, which is often a luxury for a budget lens. Also, the lens has a 'M / A - M' focus mode switch. In the 'M / A' mode, automatic focusing with manual focus priority is available - this means that manual focusing is always possible without having to move the lens to the 'M' position.

Unlike many lenses of the Nikon DX series, such as 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-200, etc. Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G uses a large and powerful focus motor ring type.

Funny but even more advanced zoom lenses by type Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor и Nikon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor do not have 'M / A' focus mode.

In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 120 degrees, as for a whale lens, manual focus is surprisingly convenient. The zoom ring is rubberized, but the focus ring is not. The minimum focusing distance is 38 centimeters, which allows you to shoot macro with an increase of 1: 6,3.

Bokeh lens. The rounded aperture blades make almost even circles in the blur zone.

My copy has come a long way in life, after which the zoom system got a little loose. The lens itself is made quite high quality, it even has a metal mount. By the way, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G will automatically focus on all Nikon camerassince the lens has a built-in focusing motor SWM. I used NIkon 18-70 mm on cameras without any problems Nikon D40, D40x и Nikon D80.

Comes with a lens Hood HB-32. The lens hood can be installed back-to-front, while it will be difficult to use the lens, as access to the zoom ring will be lost.

The lens consists of already 15 elements in 13 groups, moreover, one element is aspherical, and three elements are made of special ED low-dispersion glass. I believe that for a whale lens, the presence of such a number of special elements that can improve image quality is a very serious indicator. You can read more about all the optical circuits of Nikon DX lenses. here.

If you choose a relatively cheap universal zoom, perhaps the following plate will be useful in this:

NIkon 18-70mm AF-S stands out for its aperture F / 4.5 at maximum zoom position. Aperture at F / 4.5, 1,55 times more than F5.6. 2/3 stops of aperture gain are not so much important for faster shutter speeds as for comfortable sighting and autofocus. You can read more about focusing at different maximum values of the F number. here, but you can read how to take pictures without hand blur here.

Sample Photos

All photos in the first two galleries without treatment. Only reduced size to 3 megapixels and imprinted data from EXIF. The image from the lens suffers from severe distortion and vignetting at 18mm. Sharpness is not the best, but quite normal for such a lens; sharpness at the corners of the frame drops noticeably. But the lens perfectly holds back light. Due to the 7-petal diaphragm with rounded petals, it is difficult to achieve star effect with strong light sources.

My thoughts are:

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is much better than Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical и Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM Aspherical... Used cost Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is mere pennies. For example, at one time I bought myself a Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G for only 130 USD, it became a universal lens for home use on my cropped cameras. I've changed Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon on NIkon 18-70, because Tamron in 2 years just crumbled into pieces, and I have no regrets about it. True, my copy of the NIkon 18-70 was not as sharp as expected. When choosing such a lens, be careful, as there are lenses with different image quality. Nikon DX Lens Considerations here, and a list of all Nikon DX lenses can be viewed here.

The masters who repair the lens claim that the Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G built-in focus motor is noticeably better than the Nikon 18-55 (all models), Nikon 18-105, Nikon 18-135.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon DX cameras. The lens has a good price / performance ratio and fast internal autofocus. Many amateur photographers bypass this old man, but as practice has shown, the Nikon 18-70mm is a really good lens.

    Good afternoon, Arkady!
    Thank you for your work.
I wanted to ask, I’m looking for a staffer for Nikon D90, so I got a choice?
    either Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX
    either Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX
what do you advise? maybe something else?
    Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR is already available)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      18-70 is pretty good.

  • Alain

Good afternoon, Arkady. Thank you for your reviews! Can you please tell me on the D3100 AF-S 18-55 VR or 18-70 without a stabilizer? And in general, is the presence of a stabilizer critical?

    • Alain

There is also an option 18-105 VR. Will portraits differ significantly? Does it make sense to overpay or enough for the D3100 and 18-55?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the daytime, a stabilizer is not needed. Sometimes it helps out in poor lighting, but if the lighting is very poor, then the stabilizer will not help. I find the 18-70 a prettier lens than the 18-55 VR.

  • Danil

and who has a better picture at 18-70 or 35-70 II AF

  • Paul

They all told and discussed everything, but is it really possible for them to shoot at least some kind of macro? well, or conduct subject shooting?
    Arkady?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The review states “magnification 1: 6,2”, that is, the macro is weak, MDF 38cm, just be more careful.

  • DMITRICH54

Arkady! Thanks for the tip! I took 18-70 for 130.e. Whales that were Nikon’s and Kenonov’s weren’t lying around! Fix Nikonovsky 50mm1,8 (old with FM-2) could not be distinguished by 5,6! Now I only carry Nikkor 100.2,8E with me Not needed.

I also bought this lens for myself today ..)) Before that I shot on Nikon 18-105 VR and I had a vague desire to change it to something. That lens clearly lacked sharpness. Everything seems to be good, the construct is good. There were no front / back tricks, it focuses quickly, but doubts prevailed. Too soft, soapy. Of course, we can say that he changed the awl for soap, and even without a stub. But the picture is definitely better, sharpness, detail - I'm happy. Although 18-70 is cheaper than 18-105, the paradox is even in the subjective appearance of an improvement in the overall quality of the picture.)

Is it worth changing kit. 18-55 to 18-105, photoap. 3100? And what is the most optimal (photo and lens) kit for beginners? In your opinion.

Compared 18-55vr c 18-70. I held 18-70 in my hands for only 10 minutes. I immediately revealed the advantages of the latter:
    - faster and quieter autofocus
    - M / A mode
    - manual focusing is much more convenient
    - sharper
    - lighter
    - the difference in the maximum focal length is quite noticeable
    - metal bayonet
    - looks more solid

  • Andrei

I am the owner of the second consecutive 18-70, I can write one thing: the quality of the specimens varies greatly, but at the same time I will not advise anyone having any whale available to change it to 18-70. In any case, you will get some soap and back light incontinence, if you are not lucky yet and HA will come out. Structurally and functionally in itself is very good.

  • Athos

There are 18-70 on D70s.And there it is not bad, better than 18-55. I recently bought a D5100, with its 16 pixels, and I got the feeling that 18-70 doesn’t quite allow these pixels. Maybe it’s not, but it was developed it’s under D70, for the first time anyway. And there are 6 peaks versus 16 on 5100. At that time, I had no idea about that amount. So I want to take 18-105. Is it only worth it? I want to get the most out of the new matrix for reasonable money .

    • Arkady Shapoval

A new 18-140 came out, but it's not clear what he is like.

Buying one instead of the other any of the discussed lenses 18-55, 18-70 or 18-105 is stupid ... It's like selling a Lada a five and buying a Lada, but a seven. In some ways it is better, but by and large level one. Grew from a fix, buy 50 / 1,4. Learn to zoom with your feet))

it is immediately evident that you did not compare 18-105 or 18-135 with 18-55 in real work. )))

And who can compare it (or used in comparison) with the Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5?

  • Vintorez

I have been using this glass for two years on trips, it suits everyone, but it turns blue. Low micro contrast, white balance errors, all pictures have to be processed. But, in general, the glass is valid.

Did someone use it on the D90?

The 5100-18 lens was purchased for the D70 camera after 18-55 (which), according to the results of experiments it turned out

  • Hippo

For the D5100 camera, an 18-70 lens was purchased after 18-55 (which came bundled initially), according to the results of experiments it turned out that it was very difficult, almost impossible to take a sharp photo, and a huge number of shutter speed, aperture and ISO variations were tested. 18-55 was much sharper, more contrasting and made a more interesting picture. Could this be due to the incompatibility of the bottom lens and camera? With flash makes a pretty sharp picture almost always. BUT without her, just sheer disappointment.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is due to the unsuccessful option 18-70.

  • Hippo

That is, on the D5100, it should take pictures no worse than 18-55? But how do you explain good flash shots? I still sin on the lack of a stabilizer, on 18-55 there was a stabilizer.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This can be a normal visual effect, or with a flash, the camera simply closes the aperture more strongly. There are no compatibility problems, and the stabilizer is not responsible for sharpness at all.

    • Dima

Like the delirium of a delitant, learn the materiel.

  • Dmitriy

Arkady, thanks for the great review! Actually, I like all your reviews;)
Please tell me what should I look for when buying a used 18-70? Or will the recommendations be the same as for any used lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Check the appearance, the operation of the focusing system, the cleanliness of the lenses.

    • Lynx

and check the back-front focus on the focusing target on your camera. google, there are articles on this along with a printout of the target.

Hello Arkady, I found the Japanese version (it says MADE IN JAPAN on the object). How do you think the Japanese version may also have problems ???

  • Igor

There is an opportunity to buy one. The serial number is in front of US. What does it mean ? The seller claims to be from America. Tell me, who knows.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For America, the lenses have separate numbers and are usually numbered from the letters US (Unitated States - the United States of America - States, in our opinion) :)

  • Igor

Thanks for the quick answer, but there is some doubt: take - do not take. Another interesting option is 24-85 without a stub. I don't know what to do ... both are outdated models. I want a station wagon. For a year now, I've only been studying your site - your advice will help a lot.

  • anonym

Tell me how to determine the year of manufacture of the NIKON lens by serial number?

  • Tcher

Hello, please tell me - in comparison with Nikon DX VR AF-S 18-140mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED, which of the two should you prefer as a travel zoom, in terms of quality and travel convenience? Since there is an opportunity to save money by buying a used 18-70, I want to understand whether it is worth paying more for a new 18-140 or will it only add more focal length?
