Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical review

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical - great small versatile lens for cropped cameras Nikon DX. It was the first zoom lens for Nikon DX cameras, introduced back in 2004 with a camera Nikon D70... I can assume Nikon did their best to make their first crop wagon good. Anyway, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is one of the oldest lenses in Nikon DX format. To replace it was later released Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical, which turned out to be worse in general than 18-70mm.

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is a good all-rounder, its EGF is 27-105 mm. This range of focal lengths is very often used on cropped cameras. Lens fit for any simple photo tasks.

The lens has internal focusing - When zooming and focusing, the front lens does not rotate. Lens autofocus is surprisingly fast... The lens even has a focusing distance scale, which is often a luxury for a budget lens. Also, the lens has a 'M / A - M' focus mode switch. In the 'M / A' mode, automatic focusing with manual focus priority is available - this means that manual focusing is always possible without having to move the lens to the 'M' position.

Unlike many lenses of the Nikon DX series, such as 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-200, etc. Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5G uses a large and powerful focus motor ring type.

Funny but even more advanced zoom lenses by type Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor и Nikon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor do not have 'M / A' focus mode.

In manual focus mode, the focus ring rotates approximately 120 degrees, as for a whale lens, manual focus is surprisingly convenient. The zoom ring is rubberized, but the focus ring is not. The minimum focusing distance is 38 centimeters, which allows you to shoot macro with an increase of 1: 6,3.

Bokeh lens. The rounded aperture blades make almost even circles in the blur zone.

My copy has come a long way in life, after which the zoom system got a little loose. The lens itself is made quite high quality, it even has a metal mount. By the way, Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G will automatically focus on all Nikon camerassince the lens has a built-in focusing motor SWM. I used NIkon 18-70 mm on cameras without any problems Nikon D40, D40x и Nikon D80.

The lens consists of already 15 elements in 13 groups, moreover, one element is aspherical, and three elements are made of special ED low-dispersion glass. I believe that for a whale lens, the presence of such a number of special elements that can improve image quality is a very serious indicator. You can read more about all the optical circuits of Nikon DX lenses. here.

If you choose a relatively cheap universal zoom, perhaps the following plate will be useful in this:

NIkon 18-70mm AF-S stands out for its aperture F / 4.5 at maximum zoom position. Aperture at F / 4.5, 1,55 times more than F5.6. 2/3 stops of aperture gain are not so much important for faster shutter speeds as for comfortable sighting and autofocus. You can read more about focusing at different maximum values of the F number. here, but you can read how to take pictures without hand blur here.

Sample Photos

All photos in the first two galleries without treatment. Only reduced size to 3 megapixels and imprinted data from EXIF. The image from the lens suffers from severe distortion and vignetting at 18mm. Sharpness is not the best, but quite normal for such a lens; sharpness at the corners of the frame drops noticeably. But the lens perfectly holds back light. Due to the 7-petal diaphragm with rounded petals, it is difficult to achieve star effect with strong light sources.

My thoughts are:

Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is much better than Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED SWM Aspherical и Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6GII ED SWM Aspherical... Used cost Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G is mere pennies. For example, at one time I bought myself a Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G for only 130 USD, it became a universal lens for home use on my cropped cameras. I've changed Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon on NIkon 18-70, because Tamron in 2 years just crumbled into pieces, and I have no regrets about it. True, my copy of the NIkon 18-70 was not as sharp as expected. When choosing such a lens, be careful, as there are lenses with different image quality. Nikon DX Lens Considerations here, and a list of all Nikon DX lenses can be viewed here.

The masters who repair the lens claim that the Nikon 18-70 / 3.5-4.5G built-in focus motor is noticeably better than the Nikon 18-55 (all models), Nikon 18-105, Nikon 18-135.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED DX SWM IF Aspherical is a good all-round lens for Nikon DX cameras. The lens has a good price / performance ratio and fast internal autofocus. Many amateur photographers bypass this old man, but as practice has shown, the Nikon 18-70mm is a really good lens.

We briefly and at the same time told about this good lens, for D200 cameras it was a whale, a useful plate. I used it - not bad as a portraitist and a reporter, as a shirik at about 18-55

Thank you, he was a whale to both the D70 and other cameras.

  • Jury

Arkady you wrote that you changed the collapsed Tamron 2.8 to nickor 18-70. Tell me, do you have enough of it as a staffer and reporting zoom, or is it still lacking in sharpness and aperture after a tamron? What are your general impressions when comparing the quality of photographs of these two lenses?

    • Jury

Arkady, I am interested in your opinion on the above question. And also, if it's not difficult - tell me what inexpensive standard zoom (I will also use it as a travel zoom) you will advise from the list of nikors and why: 18-70, 18-135, 18-105 vr. Budget up to 10000 r. 18-200 vr is too expensive for me for these purposes, besides, the toad will eat me if I break it on a trip, hike or somewhere else)) I don't want to take Tamron if it falls apart from me in 1-2 years, to besides, the quality of their photos also depends on the copy. If there are better alternatives - please tell me - I will be very grateful.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The quality of the photo in 18-70 is worse than that of Tamron. I am enough 18-70 with my head, since it is interesting only for the wide angle on the crop.

      • Jury

I look forward to the answer to the second question)

        • Arkady Shapoval

18-70 is inexpensive, not bad, and I recommend it. In general, I recommend 18-70 here - https://radojuva.com.ua/2013/01/what-camera-nikon-shoud-i-buy/

          • Jury

The lens is good, but I'm afraid that 70mm won't be enough for me when traveling. if the price of 18-135 and 18-70 is about the same, is 18-70 still so much better that you can sacrifice the versatility of 18-135?

          • Maria

Good afternoon. my name is Maria, let's get to know each other. A matter of urgent importance, I often read your reviews, so I am addressing you. I have a nickname d90, I have a beautiful half of glass (I work in the studio) and a tamron - for all occasions. But now I will need to do reportage, in different rooms, often not very large. So, there is a need to buy another lens, but not a fix, and up to a half (which would not bring it very close, but if necessary, it could be closer). I don’t know what to choose. I thought 16-85, well, this, and the price does not bite, I watched 24-70 I don't see much difference in quality, only the price. The price of the issue is up to $ 1200, that's what I don't know to choose. Help me please. Thank you, I will be very grateful to you

            • Arkady Shapoval

For 1200u.e. can be found 17-55 2.8, it will be a great option.

          • Stas

On d90, it makes no sense to take either 17-55 or 24-70. It is better to take 16-85. The very ones in this sequence were 18-55, 18-105, 18-70, 16-85 on the carcasses d60, d90, d7000. At 16-85 he stopped as at the best of the whole list. The truth was still 28-105, but it is a bit narrow on the crop (by the way, therefore, I do not advise 24-70). In connection with the purchase of ff, I sold 16-85, which I sometimes regret.

      • Oleksandr

Maybe the reason for the tsomu: "My copy has come a long way in life, after which the zooming system is a little loose."

At me buv such із Д70с, t_lki glad.

Is it worth it to change your Nikon 18-105mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor or not?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Do not be.

  • Sashko

Then you vibrate the object on the staff, with a pair of Tokina AT-X 28-70mm f2,8 bullet, just in conjunction with a wide cutout (crop factor) and a nasty split-type vibrator Nikon 18-70mm AF-S 3.5-4.5 G ED-IF DX, I don’t regret it.
You can get a copy away from the distance (in the ideal stanі buv) ... sharp on vіdrіtyh, garnished color transmission, quick focus, lightened power compensated with sleep (if necessary), as the image is worthy of respect.

    • Sashko

forgetting to do it, scho vibrav mіzh 18-70, 18-105, 18-200 .... according to the photo 18-70, the most vlashtuval.

      • Jury

Even in sharpness 18-70 is better?

    • Oleksandr

But I'm on the way to the Tokina AF 28-70mm f / 2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II iz Nikon 18-70mm.
      On taku:

      • Sashko

There is no PRO in the menu of the bull (first version), and it’s possible that I was not up to the task. Well, the wide kuta is dumb, and the price of tai come in handy.

  • Sashko

It’s all my sub-active thought, but in terms of the sharpness and brightness of the image as a whole, it’s three times the best that will be added. Here, if you have drawn the buv, a good test of all three objects, then the strength and distribution of the building is 18-70 boles of the most beautiful, well, according to the other parameters.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I agree with you.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

    Pardon in another speech NIkon

  • Victor

Please tell me on d3100 will all modes of type portrait and auto work with it? And does it make sense to take it under the body d3100?

    • Oleksandr

So, everything will be pratsyuvati. Sounds like при, with such a small tushtsi, I would like the camera trim to be played for the object.

    • Lex

On the D3100 it will be heavy, this is the first. The nose will constantly pull down, which is inconvenient.
There will also be a problem when shooting handheld without a flash in low light. It is also due to weight. The imbalance is decent.
Secondly, the 18-55 VR, the one that the kit is a great thing, is not inferior to 18-70, at least on your model. And somewhere is even better. When I had the D3100, I tried decent lenses in search of the best than 18-55, but never found. I mean zoom to 14-15 thousand. And their compatibility with a specific model.

  • Michael

Yes, there is no M / A mode on 18-105 VR. But when you turn on the camera in AF-S focus mode, then after directly autofocusing the lens, you can calmly correct the focus or focus anywhere. In this case, I do not quite understand how this mode differs from M / A.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Perform the same maneuver in AF-C does not work. The instructions clearly state that you cannot twist the focus ring in position A. There you have the difference.

  • Igor

I have 18-105 on d200. Does it make sense to change to 18-200 or not? Respectfully to Arkady.

    • Michael

I myself studied this question. I dare to answer for Arkady.
In the image, 18-105 is noticeably better than any of the two 18-200, especially at> 16Mp.
But the versatility of traveling 18-200 is slightly better, given the image quality.
Personally, I didn’t choose 18-200. Not much and we need these 100-200mm, except that the birds and small details of the architecture to shoot.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        18-200 is better than 18-105

    • Michael

Here you go. The most important thing I forgot to say.
After all, Arcadia has a review of 18-200 VR. He believes the opposite, that 18-200 in everything is better for 18-105.
I turned 18-200 VR and VRII in my hands for a long time, but I did not notice better image quality, especially on the edge.
      Well, it happens ...

      • Roma

Since frankly, there is no difference in the quality of the picture between 18-70, 18-105 and 18-200 .. Almost everything is the same. 18-55 is clearly worse, and the rest are on the same level, only the focal ones are different. I was 18-105 and I have 18-200 II, and I took 18-55 and 18-70 from my sister. So, in addition to 18-135, I compared everyone.

  • Gennady

Arkady, thanks for the new review, only you are a little "screwed up" on 18-105 there is an M / A mode and when the shutter button is pressed halfway, you can do a little fine-tuning of the focus by hand. The only thing is that after rotating the focus ring by more than 30-40 °, the focus is returned to its place by the internal motor. This surprised me a little. Hak that the owners of 18-105 VR watch)

    • Arkady Shapoval

I was not mistaken, 18-105 has an AM mode, but there are no M / A modes - M, please look at this picture https://radojuva.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/autofocus-with-manual-override-about-2.jpg and on the mode indicator on the lens 18-105, it’s not for nothing that I specifically stop at m / A, sorry, not everyone understands the real difference.

      • prime_k

I responsibly declare, as the owner, that in Nikkor 18-105 DX in the “A” (AM switch) mode you can turn the focusing ring, it is not blocked. So when the shutter button is held down (or a separate one, depending on which camera) and autofocus is locked, you can twist this very focus with a ring. It turns out this is the mode - "M / AM".

        • Arkady Shapoval

There is such a situation https://radojuva.com/2015/11/some-a-m-trick/

          • prime_k

Thanks for the link to the material. By the way, the ring rotates even with a slight change in autofocus, no need to wait until it stops completely. I write this only on the basis of personal practice :)

Arkady, hello. Sorry, maybe in the wrong thread I ask my question. Tell me, are there adapters for using lenses with a sony \ minolta mount on a Nikon system? Caught almost for nothing Tokina 75-300 with a Sony mount. By the way, you don’t know what kind of animal it is?

  • Alexey

Hello Arkady !!! I would like to ask if you came across a lens from the above table 16-85? I would like to hear your opinion about this glass. If I could have brought it to you for a “test drive”))

  • Alexey

    Hello, Arkady.
Can you please tell me if there is any point in replacing the kit 18-55 3.5 - 5,6, which came with the D40 for this lens? This one seems to be lighter, and the focal range is wider. It's embarrassing that you mentioned decent vignetting on the short end. 18-55 does not suffer greatly from this.
    Thanks for the review.
    Regards, Alexey

    • Arkady Shapoval

In a way, this is a good replacement. The vignette level at 18-55 is also serious, the vignette level at 18-70 is easy to see in the examples of photographs from this review.

It’s a pity that when you go to the full frame all the lenses will have to be sold and bought again. With great pleasure I would buy myself 18-70, and even better 18-200 instead of my 18-55 and 55-200, but I don’t want to spend money realizing that a couple of years old and I really want FF.
in this regard, the question ...
Arkady, tell me please, what kind of glass can you take on the d300 as a station wagon so that it will come in handy later in the full frame? (as always I want to eat a fish and ...).

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon 17-35 2.8 other staff members and does not come to mind.

  • jimi

Thank you, our opinions agree. It is a pity that so far the financial opportunities do not coincide with the desires.

Tell me why you are to the DX lens, add crop factor 1,5
After all, it is then designed for a cropped matrix, this is if you put full-frame
to crop, then +1,5. As I understand it.
And then the even is no longer clear and cropped and full-frame and still +1,5
    unfortunately there’s no full-frame camera,
tried on Nikon D3000 18-105 DX
and sigma 70-300 DG full-frame, with the same focal lengths,
the viewing angle changes on a scale, but I don’t understand why add +1,5 to the DX

    • Arkady Shapoval

The focal length does not depend on the crop factor, it is a physical quantity. If, for example, a focal length of 5mm is indicated on a soap dish, then this does not mean that the lens gives a super-super wide angle, and you need to apply a recalculation of the ether. I read 2 times on your link here https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/05/size-of-matrica/
before you write, and again after. But came to a standstill.
As they say until you feel you will not understand.
I understood one thing if I put full-frame on the crop I see 1,5 times closer
and where you need to fasten 18-70 DX to see 28-105 from it, even on a smaller matrix
    is it possible?
If I'm stupid, delete! or in the topic about crop, please, so as not to trash here.
understood so far if the camera is full-frame + lens 18-70 and
sprinkled + lens 18-70 DX I will see the same picture,
and sprinkled + 18-70 (WITHOUT DX) I will see 1,5 times closer.
Here it is somewhere so popular without mathematics.

    • Arkady Shapoval

When set to 18-70 on the crop, you will see the corner 28-105. If you put 18-70 on a full frame, then it will be a real 18-70 with only dark corners. Focal length is a physical quantity, it does not depend on which DX or FX format the lens will be used on. Therefore, the EGF is recalculated for all lenses.

  • Manych

I’ll ask you a little as I understand
    full frame + 28-105 and crop + 18-70 DX
I will see the same picture and from the same distance?

    • Roma

No. 18-70 that sprinkled, that 18-70 full-frame will have the same viewing angle.

    • Andrey Super

      That's right!

      • Andrey Super

Full-frame camera + 28-105 and cropped + 18-70 picture are the same! The DX lens designation indicates that the image focused on the full-frame sensor does not cover it completely (darkened angles).

I liked another review by Arkady, I will add only a little from myself. I own this glass (18-70), I used it relatively inexpensively (~ $ 200). As a standard lens, it is very good, I came across a sharp copy, the picture is noticeably clearer than on the 18-55, in fact, this is understandable, it has special elements - aspherical and low-dispersion lenses. As Arkady pointed out, the zoom looses over time, however, this does not affect the quality of the picture.
Frankly speaking, a slightly larger range (70 versus 55) gives little, but you can try to take a portrait (although this is not a portrait lens, of course).
A nice option is the distance scale, although I rarely use it. Another nice thing - in addition to the metal bayonet, there is a rubber sealing edge, which to some extent limits the ingress of debris into the camera.
The lens is rare, a new one costs from 12 thousand, in the secondary market you can find from 3-3.5 (an average of 6-6.5 thousand rubles). In general, I like this glass. I use on D90

  • Diehl

Good day Arkady, found this lens on the Internet at a ridiculous price, it doesn’t have its own autofocus, and if you buy it for the d90, is there any chance of autofocus?

    • Oleksandr

      Nі, autofocus will not be.

  • jimi

Today I bought myself 18-70. A normal staffer for such ridiculous money. From the first shots, there is a clear difference in a positive direction from 18-55. Focusing speed was very surprising. At the moment, in my backpack this is the fastest glass (18-55, 55-200, 50 / 1.8, helios44 / 2). Compared to 18-135, which I recently managed to test somewhere around forty minutes, 18-70 seems to me better both in the picture and in the construct. Although the opinion is subjective on two specific glasses.

    • Roma

Fast glass usually means the ability to photograph with the fastest shutter speed, thanks to the aperture and all other parameters being equal.

      • Eugene

What kind of nonsense, nothing better to say!

  • Egor

Good evening. Today I became the owner of this lens. I can say the following, based on my experience of using whale glasses 18-55, 18-105, 18-135 and 28-100, I liked the 18-70 lens the most in terms of use, quality of performance, as well as m / a mode and lighter luminous efficiency. The quality is also on top, although I can't say that I was not happy with the quality of the same 18-55. Therefore, I believe that the quality of all kit lenses is approximately equally good. And since this is a zoom, it is generally excellent. I think the lens is 18-70 - leader price = quality!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I think so too :)
