Overview of MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50

For the opportunity of MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 lens review Many thanks to Vadim Shkurat, who sent me a lens from another area for review.

Overview of MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50

MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 is a very interesting lens. Firstly, the presence of multi-layer enlightenment is very strangely indicated in his name, for which the combination of letters 'MS' is responsible in the name. Usually МtionСLoyal enlightenment is referred to as 'MC'. Soviet optics 'renowned' for its unique ability to confuse names, especially when translating or transliterating. Personally, I am amused by the name of the lens. Vega-12B (a mixture of Cyrillic and Latin letters).

Secondly, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that on my MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 there is no manufacturer designation, most likely this is an export version of the lens. Also, most likely MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 is a copy or modification of the lens MS HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50. Who has additional information, add it in the comments.

The lens twists the background very strongly, has excellent sharpness, holds back and side light well. As for me, this is one of the best Soviet fifty dollars. If you find one or MS Helios-77m-4 1,8 / 50 - I highly recommend purchasing.

Focusing on the lens is smooth. The focusing ring rotates 180 degrees, while focusing the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens lengthens by 1 cm. The minimum distance, as for many fifty-fifty dollars, is 45 centimeters. The lens has a focus distance scale for accurate focusing and a depth of field scale. Focusing ring metal. In general, the lens is very well assembled, although the frame near the front lens on my copy is plastic and slightly backlash. The lens uses a 52mm diameter for the front light filter. The frame of the case is made in classic colors for the latest lenses of the Helios family.

The aperture can be set from f / 1.8 to f / 16. The number of aperture blades is 6 pieces. It is a pity, if the lens had a round multi-blade diaphragm, it would not have a price. The aperture of the lens is blinking type. Only automatic iris control is available. For use on modern digital cameras, the aperture must be locked in order to gain manual control over its control.

My copy is serial number 92029111. Most likely it is 1992 production. Enlightenment on the lens is greenish, most likely enlightenment on MS HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 and MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 are slightly different.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Personal experience

I really liked the MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50. MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 lenses, MS HELIOS-77M-4 1,8 / 50 и MC HELIOS-77M-4 50mm 1: 1,8 twist the background very much.

MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2 and MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50

MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2 and MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50

Conclusions:

MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50 is an excellent fast prime lens. The distant shot in the out-of-focus area spins very strongly. Recommend.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

  • Igor

Thanks for the article! Answered my questions. Informative.

  • Okulov Dmitry

Thank you for the article. Just interested in the differences between the 77th and the 44th.

  • Alexey

Make a review of Nikon d50, an interesting camera. It has something that was later removed from the younger models - a screwdriver, bracketing ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

Give me a Nikon D50 and I will do a review.

      • Alexey

Unfortunately Chelyabinsk is very far from Kiev.

  • Alexey

    … ..The top monochrome display…

  • Alexander

Thanks for the review and especially for the test PHOTOS !!! I HERE EXACTLY THE SAME I GOT !!! until I tested and it was interesting how it differs from 77M-4!

  • Paul

    Informative review, thanks.
Does the full-frame mirror cling 77m (or 77m-4)? I ask, because my 44m catches.

    • Arkady Shapoval

On my D700 does not catch, otherwise I would write.

    • Dmitriy

On canons catches. On nikon does not catch just because there is no infinity. Because of this problem, I sold mine, replacing the 81st

      • Jury

I use 77m and 77m-4 on Mark2, there are no problems with the mirror.
The problem is probably in the adapters.

        • Gennady

I use on the Canon 600D with a dandelion adapter. No problems. Interestingly draws. I like.

        • Staz

I clung on the 1st nickle and the second, filed a little file with everything ok. =)

  • Gene jb

It seems to me that the bokeh is quite egg-shaped and the diaphragm here is not very dependent on the number of petals. Although there will probably be nuts in the sun.

  • Levani

Egg - the hole is completely open.

  • Katherine

They say the vivitar 50 / 1.8 is the same. Is not it?

  • Eugene

Hello Arkady! Which lens would you choose from Helios 77 and Helios 81 from the point of view of artistry of the picture (no matter which system)? Which one is still sharper? Thank you so much for the work done - great site !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • anonym

Good time of day. Please tell me why, when I twist the aperture ring on this lens, the petals are not visible?

  • Photoyarsk

They write that the MS marking arose erroneously and that the manufacturer (Vologda), because of this, did not even put its "snowflake" logo

  • Yuriy Nikolayevich

    ****************
I consider it a great success that I got a completely new G77M-4 ..! Practically “in grease”, i.e. in Soviet packing rice paper ... For half an hour I “drove” it to infinity and have been in creative ecstasy for a month now !!!
Captured him quite by accident thanks to our respected Arcady. If this article weren’t likely, it would hardly have paid attention to it, because Soviet lenses already have a few pieces. But when I bought (~ $ 40) and did the first tests, I realized: “Here it is my photographic happiness ..!”
I shoot only at fully open - the sharpness is simply gorgeous. The diaphragm is locked at the maximum hole and I see no reason to touch it at all. The pictures are clear, contrasting, saturated. When I reworked under Nikon, I even got a flight for infinity, therefore, when shooting a landscape in the fully open, the foreground is obtained in a very interesting “software” ... Something like a monocle effect. It looks especially interesting if in the foreground there is water with glare from the sun.
The fact that this lens will remain with me forever is definitely ... I strongly recommend it to everyone, if there is an opportunity to buy the 77th Helios somewhere, take it !!! Surely you will not regret.
And no automation is a competitor to him - it's just a completely different product ...

    • Andrei

How did you get it: ... In half an hour, "drove" him into infinity ???

  • Sergei

there is helios 77 as new 9 tr communication mail boss.wret@mail.ru tel 9003023540 Voronezh transfer possible

  • Karina

I really want Helios 77m, where can I buy it in Ukraine? I find only 77m4

  • Irina

Good afternoon, dear men, please tell me soviet objaktiv portrait on nikon 5100, it is desirable to “sit down” without an adapter. thanks

  • Anna

Good evening. Please tell me, is this lens suitable for Kenon 1100d kit EF-S 18-55IS? What kind of adapter is needed and is there a place for it to be, instead of, for example, Kenov fifty dollars?

    • anonym

Yes, it does. The EMF AF CONFIRM M42 LENS to Canon EOS adapter can be purchased on EBAY for around $ 10.

  • anonym

Kenon's fifty-kopeck piece is rare rubbish, such a sho even a Gelik would be better than him. Though it won't fall apart from the first sneeze. And so look better for the German-Japanese.

    • Fedka

The Japanese and Germans no one has such a pattern as the Helios 77th.

  • I will be brief.

Maybe someone is interested. Arkady did not describe how to lock the diaphragm to work on digital Nikons. I did this. 4 small screws for a flat screwdriver are unscrewed from behind the lens. The back cover is removed and there is (falls out) a finger that fixes this very diaphragm. Take this finger and put insulation on it from a thin wire (select the diameter of the finger) 1,5-2 mm long. This will be the limiter that will fix the aperture - which is what we need -) If you want to use it again on a film machine, do the operation in the reverse order - i.e. remove the ring from the finger. -)

    • The Hedgehog

I will add - in terms of diameter, an ampoule of an ordinary ballpoint pen is well suited for the role of a limiter.

      • I will be brief.

        ++.

    • anonym

There are modifications to the lenses where the pin (which needs to be locked) does not drop out and you need to disassemble the entire mechanism. This can be avoided. You just need to cut the length of the rod lengthwise and insert it onto the rod. Then you do not need to disassemble anything at all and all the work of locking the pin in the pressed state is greatly facilitated.

  • Dan

What is the best lens for the quality of shooting and bokeh, the export version of the helios77m or which is sold in our country helios 77m-4?

  • Alexander

Accidentally caught, very pleased with the picture.

  • anonym

I got the MS in '90, put it through an adapter on the Sony 7R.
On the camera, I messed with Sony Zeiss 55 / 1.8.
Surprised by the picture, took paired pictures, look at the monitor.
I tried fifty cents from white Helios to Zeiss,
Leica did not want because of the price.
    Who cares, write.
Many thanks to the author for the reviews.
Titanic labor. I use the site materials for information
Great help when choosing a technique.

  • anonym

    Yuri.
    Of course. compared.
I’m writing from the phone, I just tried the glass,
    Maybe euphoria and excess.

  • Andrei

    tell me where 77 can I buy? not 77 m 4 namely 77

  • Al

    I can sell MS Helios-77M 1,8 / 50

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

      Have you sold it?

      • B. R. P.

Wait another 3 years, then ask.
