Review Mir-1 2.8 / 37

There are a huge number of different modifications of the Mir-1 2.8 / 37 lens, you can read about the differences in the review of one of them - Mir-1V 2.8 / 37 (1985, Vologda). Also, it’s very interesting to write about Mir-1 lenses. on the site of Sergei Elizarov.

Lens view Mir-1 2.8 37

View of the Mir-1 lens 2.8 37. The yellow illumination of the lens is visible

A distinctive feature of my instance is:

  • White metal case, lens name is written in Latin
  • Yellow front lens enlightenment
  • The lens was manufactured in Zagorsk in 1967.
  • M42 seating thread (possibly M49 with a M39-M42 ring, as I did not look, could not determine), the inscription "GRAND PRIX" Brussel 1958
  • 10-blade aperture

Focusing on the Mir-1 2.8 / 37 is smooth, the focus ring rotates 270 degrees. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens practically does not lengthen. I really didn’t like that the focus ring is located behind the lens, near the lens mount on the camera. The focus ring is narrow, it is inconvenient to rotate, often instead of the focus ring you want to twist the aperture preset ring. The depth of field scale and the focus distance scale are near the landing thread. With the lens attached to my camera Canon 350D, the camera’s built-in flash closes the DOF and the focus distance scales on the lens. The minimum focusing distance is 70 cm.

My instance has an aperture device with 10 petals. The lens has an aperture control ring and aperture preset ring, it is pleasant and not difficult to use manual aperture control. You can set the aperture value to F / 16 and use the preset ring to obtain smooth aperture changes without fixing at intermediate values, which is important, for example, for video shooting.

Sample photos on Mir-1 2.8 / 37

Photos without processing. Shot on Canon 350D, with which EGF turned out to be equal to 59,2 mm due to crop factor. When working through the optical viewfinder, the lens gives a faint yellow-green tint, automatic BB The camera does not notice this. It’s quite difficult to focus, I got a prohibitive amount of defective photos due to misses when focusing on my camera Canon 350D.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Conclusions:

Mir-1 2.8 / 37 is an interesting fast wide-angle Soviet prime lens. On the crop, it loses its charm a little. There are many modifications of the Mir-1 lens.

Hello, tell me I have the same Mir-1 white with an inscription and two zeros at the beginning of the number! By the state of the screws, it is clear that they did not climb into it, and the lens itself is like new) but not on the canon, not on the mirrorless camera, there is no infinity !!! Here's how, if something else would be 30-40 degrees to turn the ring and there would be infinity ... but it is not, what to do with it and did you have that?

    • Rodion

Pull out and align the adjusting ring 0,3 mm. It is worn on the lens, you need to remove the focuser.

  • max tm

    World-1 white, 68 years old + Nikon D90.

I got such a copy on the occasion. I read reviews. Complaints that the focusing ring is close to the device. I have it on the "nose". In the reviews they say about the preset ring, mine does not have it. Diaragma on my copy with a free wheel. Factory defaults are only at the edges. "2.8 and 16" the rest, some craftsman applied it by hand. Who knows what kind of world-1? https://ibb.co/iLjYeG Google did not see anything like it.

    • Sergei

One photograph is hard to say. It is best to take a few pictures from all angles, with the filter removed, especially all the inscriptions and the logo of the manufacturer. And what is the diameter of the thread for attaching to the camera? Better to measure with a caliper.

      • Vladimir

https://ibb.co/dgO5Rw M42 For markII. I had to remove the half-shell, and then the mirror clung.

    • zengarden

Apparently, the lens block from Mir-1 is planted in a helicoid from some other lens.

      • Vladimir

And what for example. I have no idea how to do this from a purely technical point of view. Each lens model is unique. A group of lenses is inserted precisely into the housing intended for it. Judging by the number, it is 1970. Rumor has it that they were black and white. But I didn’t find such images. I thought that in form and layout they should not be very different from each other.

        • Hingiri

From a purely technical point of view, when focusing occurs by moving the lens unit as a whole, it is completely violet which helicoid moves it.
From the photographs it is difficult to guess in which case your world was put in and why, but the control rings were taken from some format lens of the “lomo rf = 3” type. And since such optics do not have a helicoid at all, you obviously have something very homemade on your hands.

  • Alexey

Good day. I have a Samsung nx2000 camera. Which version of the world-1 is best for a mirrorless mirror. and will it focus on infinity with the adapter proposed above?

  • Paul

Here is my Mir-1N turned out.

  • anonym

Good day. I want to buy this lens for Nex. There is an e-m39 adapter with Ali Express. Is it enough? Or do you still need a ring 42-39 and put it on the adapter e-42? After all, the working segment is different here. On the 39th adapter, can I even check it how it removes?

    • Novel

Well, if the macro rings make the lens “myopic” by lengthening the flange distance, you lose infinity, and you get the opportunity to focus closer than a regular lens (eye), then the adapter l39 to Mir with a 45 mm flange focal length will give you a “farsighted” lens. In theory, you will lose near focus and start focusing from some distance to infinity with a solid flight.

In order not to mess with the m39-m42 ring, you can try to pick up the macro rings. 16 mm, in theory, should be enough (45.2 - 28.8)

      • anonym

Thank you Roman, that means with 39 adapters you’ll at least get something to take a picture and look at the pictures. I do not have macro rings at 39, there is only at 42. The lens is 65 years old, barely twisted from a camera, soured. On Sat, I’ll see what and how. Thanks again.

        • Novel

And the macro rings on Sony? In your case there would be a more universal option.

      • anonym

        I have a macro ring of 42.
The main thing for me is to test the object itself before buying. How to fix it on the nex later I will figure it out. I like the picture from this World.

  • Dmitriy

Good day! Tell me please! So I realized from the post that you should not buy it? I have a D7100.

  • Photo Dad

There is the same world-1. White, with a hood, in excellent condition. If you want to buy, write to the mail xvivx@yandex.ru
Throw off the pictures, bargain. Send by mail in Russia.

  • ALEXANDER

Will there be a problem with this lens (the “GRAND PRIX” version of Brussel 1958) with the mirror on the Nikon d600?

  • Alexander

The site of Sergei Elizarov has changed the address and now he is here:
    https://deep-life.su/

  • Andrei

Today, having recently smoked at the factory, a kind of viroblowing object.
    How did it happen?)))

  • D. Mar

It is possible to buy the same lens, only black, 70th year of manufacture. What would you recommend to buy - this, or a newer Mir-1V.

    • Rodion

Better this one. Mir-1V is very poorly assembled.

      • D. Mar

And what about optics? Old glasses are better processed or not?
        Thanks for the feedback.

        • Rodion

Yes, it's not about the glasses, but about the assembly. In Mir-1V, lenses are often skewed, very carelessly collected, because the image quality is very poor compared to Mir-1 of the Zagorsk plant.

  • Sergei

It is not clear how to understand the year of manufacture and its modification by the lens number .., it is interesting when the owner does not know the details but wants to sell.

    • B. R. P.

What will this information give you? Or just curious?
