Overview of the MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2

For the opportunity HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 lens review Many thanks to Bohdan Moysyuk.

Overview of the MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2

Overview of the MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2

Interesting, but I never met lenses 44m-5 (6,7) with the name written in Cyrillic - MS Helios-44m-5 (6, 7) 2/58, but saw only the names in Latin - MC Helios-44M-5 (6, 7) 2/58for example, such MC Helios-44M-7 58mm F2.0as in this review. If someone has information about the existence of lenses 44m-5, 44-m6,44m-7 with Cyrillic designation, please unsubscribe in the comments. The four latest versions of the MC Helios-44m-X series lenses, where X = 4, 5, 6, 7, come with the inscription 'Zenit' next to the name of the lens, and the logo of the optical-mechanical plant on Valdai.

As an exception, you can still find 'MC Helios 44M-4 2/58' (Valdai) without the Zenit inscription and without a dash between the name and number, or with the Latin script 'MC Helios 44m-4 2/58' (Krasnogorsk plant).

MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 lens and its aperture

Lens MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 and its aperture. The diaphragm petals are metallic, which is embarrassing.

By the way, there is another interesting modification of class 2/58 lenses - this is a rare version Helios44-7 (not MS) from the Zenith-7 camera, it should not be confused with version 44m-7.

MS Helios-44m-7 2 58 - front view

MC Helios-44m-7 2 58 - front view

Concerning MC Helios-44M-7 2/58 - that is the sharpest a copy among all lenses of the 'Helios' brand with the specification 2/58. Its resolution is 50 lines / mm in the center and 30 lines / mm at the edges of the image. Information on the resolution of Helios 2/58 you can see here. I do not recommend overpaying for the best option in the face of MC Helios-44m-7, since the real situation with the sharpness of the lens very much depends on its real state, because Soviet lenses pretty old. Personally, the 44m-7 lens that I had for this review seemed less sharp than the version Helios-44m-6 58mm F2.0 MS. You can read an interesting comparison of sharpness Carl Zeiss Planar 50 / 1.4 and Helios 44M-7 MS 58/2.

All Helios lenses with F2.0 58mm were built on the basis of the optical scheme of grandfather Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 2/58.  MC Helios-44M-7 2/58 - is a kind of flagship of the Helios-44m-X line. If I were asked what modification of the Helios-44 lens I kept for myself, then my choice would have stopped at one of the first Helios-44 lenses with a white body due to the fact that the first Helios-44 lenses had a 13-blade diaphragm and a diaphragm control ring ... You can read about the 13-petal white version for the m39 thread here.

MS Helios-44m-7 2 58 - serial number

MC Helios-44m-7 2 58 - serial number. My copy came to me for review in perfect condition.

Also, interesting conclusions about the Helios-44x-X line are written on the website of Sergei Elizarov here. By the way, there are rumors that the first white Helios-44 lenses were made from German glass, which was taken out of Germany after the end of the war. If you have information about this, please leave it in the comments on this review.

A characteristic highlight of the MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 is the twist of the bokeh. Many people like the 'twisted' bokeh, and MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 also has a nice 'pattern' in photographs, especially when used at open apertures.

Type of enlightenment of the lenses of the MC Helios 44m-7 2 58 lens

Type of enlightenment of the lenses of the MC Helios 44m-7 2 58 lens

The lens has a smooth focusing, a metal focusing ring. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, and the lens trunk extends by 1 cm. The focus ring rotates approximately 220 degrees. The minimum focusing distance is 50 cm. The aperture ring can be fixed at F2.0 to F16. The number of aperture blades is 6 pieces. With the number of diaphragm blades, their shape and blackening, 44m-7 disappointed.

The lens has a blinking aperture device. In order to MC Helios-44M-7 2/58 to obtain aperture control when used on digital cameras, you need to lock (clamp) the automatic aperture control lever. Lenses that have a blinking aperture are designated by the letter 'm', for example, 'Heli0s-44м'. Personally, I shot everything at F2.0.

In general, 58mm lenses cannot be called fifty dollars, because of the longer focal length they are stronger blur the backgroundthat can be used for creative ideas and highlight key elements in the photo.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Two lenses: MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 and Helios 44-2 2 58

Two lenses: MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 and Helios 44-2 2 58. Strong differences are seen in the frame of the case.

Conclusions:

MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 is an excellent sharp lens. On modern digital cameras MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2 can serve as a good portrait lens, a lens for creative shooting. The lens gives an interesting 'twisted bokeh' effect.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

Good afternoon, help the teapot. I didn't quite understand about the aperture ... I have Nikon d5100, lens 44m7 - when changing the aperture ring from f2 to f16, I don't see the difference in the pictures, as I understand it, for some reason, the aperture does not change.

    • Lynx

      can the diaphragm be broken?

    • BB

Have you carefully read the review?
      Apparently not.
Version “M” - blinking diaphragm. For the diaphragm to work in manual mode, you need to lock the diaphragm pusher (from the bayonet side) in the pressed state. You will not have it “jump”.

Tell someone. I recently bought such a lens, but inside the type of bubbles like some, what can it be or is it right? Previously, this was on the K mount, but there seemed to be nothing like that.
    Photos are excellent.

    • Jury

if seen only from this angle - this is the end of the lens

      • Vitozzz

Does this mean anything to worry about?

        • Jury

in the backlight will be noticeable. You can find a master who does blackening or do it yourself. If you like the photos, you can do nothing.

          • Vitozzz

            Thank you.

  • Ramzezs

    Hello, I have such a problem with a lens….
With backlight or a little on the side, fog appears in the photo, what could be the lens problem?
Recently, I disassembled it all and lubricated the diaphragm (to work better, and still does not close itself, probably the spring is weak), traces of oil are visible on the diaphragm. Can they give fog when reflected on the lens?
There is no particular contrast either.
I use with an adapter with a lens for infinity

    • Lynx

Firstly, an adapter with a lens gives a loss of sharpness.
and back or side - well, this is typical for simple lenses, although it is possible that you have several factors at once - multiple reflections on the diaphragm, the weakness of the lens to the back, and the effect of the adapter

    • BB

A lens adapter is evil. Get rid of it first.

'The diaphragm does not close by itself' - how should it close by itself? Read an article about using Soviet lenses on Nikon cameras.

Lubricated the diaphragm - if the oil is viscous, then you could even worsen the situation + when the diaphragm was operating, oil splashes could get on the glass - here's a fog and a loss of contrast.

But still, first of all - throw out the lens adapter: my lens adapter very much soap the picture, and the contrast is very much lost at the open aperture of the G-44-2. After the first test shooting, the adapter with the lens was thrown into the far corner, and sometimes it was used instead of the cover.

  • Vladimir

Example photo taken on this lens.

  • Vladimir

I am adding a few more photos taken with this lens. I add for the sole purpose of showing that achieving infinity with this lens on a Nikon camera is not such a difficult task. The pictures were taken with a Nikon D3000 camera. How to convert the mount, see here: http://slava-zitev.livejournal.com/68733.html
    Good luck to everyone.

  • Vladimir

    Still.

  • Vladimir

    And so

  • anonym

But do not tell me what does MC mean in the labeling of helios and why are such glasses better?

    • Dmitry

MS - means multi-coating. The MC lens tolerates side and back light better, does not lose contrast so much when shooting against a bright light source, and catches less glare. But the Soviet MC is not as high-quality as on imported glasses, plus it is still easily scratched. Therefore, the MS lens should be examined carefully when purchasing, and should be watched so that there are no scratches, especially on the rear lens.

  • Alexey

Good day, maybe dealt with the disassembly of such instances. What to do if the screws are stuck and you are already starting to tear the thread? Thanks!

    • Dmitry

You can try adding a little penetrating lubricant, such as WD-40 to sticky places.
And you can unscrew the bolt with the torn-off slot by laying a small square of thin rubber sheet between the slot and the tip of a Phillips screwdriver. (there was a life hack on youtube)

    • Sergei

Buy Helios 81n and not steamed. 44-7 is that little thing. Lucky, will delight. No-44-2 will be at least no worse, or even better. Therefore, sell him to a fool for some reason, let him suffer and cut and for the same money take 81n. No need to cut anything, there is a jump rope, what happiness. And so at 44 what good? Well torsion is fucking. All, no more virtues. Price yet.

  • Ivan

plz tell me I want to buy and plan to use on 6d and 7d.
so which is better - this lens or the G - 81 MS? is it possible to somehow make a comparison. I have no experience itself - I did not hold either one or this one in my hands, and I don’t want to buy to test both blindly (

  • Eng

Ivan, I and Helios MS 81H have Helios 44m, so at 44m the picture is sharper and more interesting, and for portraits it is more interesting than 58mm ... ... It all depends on the specimen!

    • Ivan

Yes, I delved into the question a little more and, apparently, it turns out to be blunt. As far as I understand, 81y under the canon either does not happen, or you need to saw it with a file. but all the same, other things being equal, I am more interested in the sharpness on the open. (in the center, the edges are okay already - it will wash and understand)

      • Yarkiya

You understand correctly, 81 was made under Nikon (or rather, near Kiev with Nikon F mount), Kenon can be adapted with an adapter, and 44 comes with an M42 thread, which is even more convenient for Kenon.

        • Ivan

thanks. then I will not fool around and I’ll try to take 44-7 ..

  • Alexey

Good afternoon, I would be grateful if you develop the topic of fakes Helios 44M-7 flooding the Internet sale.
    Thanks. Alexey

interesting thing, in front of 44m7, and a jump with a rear gear of 44m. Maybe the craftsmen tried?

        • Sergei

Are there scammers among them? )))) To rearrange the front panel a lot of mind is not necessary

          • Alexander

On the decorative ring, part of the inscription (lens name) is made in a different font, so this is a rough fake.

  • Leonid

    Very good lens.

Hochma is that it does not matter at all whether 44M, 44M-4 or -7 are in your hands. The quality is determined by the biography of a particular specimen - who has taken it apart and how many times over these 40 years, which Friday it left the assembly line, etc. I hope everyone remembers about the soviet mass production? ...
A specific life-tortured instance 44-2 may turn out to be sharper than a less-used one -7.
Use a deep hood and do not worry.

    • anonym

I do not agree. Important, important. Of course, from who did what with the lens, the quality may suffer. So it can be with any lens not only with a shovel. But when he got off on what Friday, that’s too much. Different people let out for water, but how many did not try an october marriage did not meet. And vryatli as you say 44-2 can appear sharper than underutilized -7. Gost was TU Resolution according to TU (center / region):
      Helios-44-2 - 38/20 lines / mm
      MC Helios-44M-7 - 50/30 lines / mm
Timbole at 44M-7 multi-layered enlightenment. What the rest do not have.

      • Evgenij

somehow helios 44-2 came to me for delivery to Jupiter 37, in pursuit of infinity I squandered it, used it for a month, used it as a macro and portrait lens, got tired - sold it, a year later my hands were holding the camera a little better and I wanted twisted bokeh this lens, I bought one, wasted it - the quality is not that, I bought another 3 m-series, it’s also not that .. mine was surprisingly more or less sharp ..

        • Evgenij

          processing minimum

          • Evgenij

although everyone was in good condition, I didn’t find the same one) although it may seem so to me) In general, helios is, in my opinion, an artistic objective, each copy is unique in its own way, the main thing is to get some work out. Now my favorite Helios 44-3)

      • Sergei

You can doubt it, but experience shows just that. I sell these Geliki and not only. 44-2 Vileykovsky and 44 white Krasnogorsk left for themselves due to excellent blackening and more convenient control of the diaphragm, more petals. I chose from 20 different pieces, including m7. With emc, everything also depends on the instance, and not on the number. Soviet MS crap, it crumbles over time, it is erased from rubbing very easily. There were instances where the MS was completely removed by microfiber. So a scoop is a scoop, quality sucks. Like everything that was done in it. Regarding fakes, there are a lot of so-called m7 made of m4 by changing the front panel. Also, lenses are often changed in m7, including internal ones due to a clogged MS to single-lumened ones, internal ones even more often are not so noticeable to the buyer. So get around the m6-7 side

        • Prometheus

How can enlightenment roll in !? One fool once said, others began to repeat. What is poured is dried glue from the diaphragm blades into which a stick was soaked to raise the petal and insert it into the lens, it is clear that with tweezers you will not have enough nerves to pick the petals with tweezers. A typical example of a production culture in a scoop.

          • Rodion

It can crumble if many layers are obtained by spraying something not very resistant. If the adhesion is not very good, it may crumble. As on Arsatha. I have never seen anything like this in Helios 44.

      • Amateur photographer from the 70s

I would like to note the following: Helios-44 of ANY modification will be more interesting for the work of Helios-81. The latter is only suitable for a photo for memory, it is devoid of artistry. And about the thesis “the more lines per mm - the sharper ...” This opinion of beginners is quite widespread, unfortunately. So, the resolution of the lens and the sharpness are NOT related to each other (oddly enough ...) In other words, the latest modifications of Helios-44M6 and 7, which they are chasing after, are not sharper than the early Helios-44M4 or G-44-2. The latter is often VERY sharp ... Do not confuse the concepts of resolution and sharp-reproducible point due to the passage of rays through the optical system (sharpness).

  • Evgenij

adapters can be bought here: http://olx.ua/list/user/Bewr/

  • H

Hello. Tell me how to determine a fake, if you have never encountered helios and did not hold in your hands? And how to determine that the lens is in good condition? Also interested in where you can buy Helios 44-7 MSK in Moscow time and what price is adequate for it?
    Thank you in advance.

    • Yarkiya

What does fake mean? Is this disgrace someone else will fake?
See that the glasses are intact without scratches, chips, internal dust, so that the diaphragm opens well and closes, the focus should be soft, not gnash or dangle. If it is possible to click a couple of frames to determine the sharpness, then fine, but if not, well, then it remains to be hoped that the collector Uncle Vasya was not from a hangover.

      • H

One companion mentioned above that there is a risk of a fake run up in online sales.

      • Evgenij

interrupt the inscriptions, so as not to run into this - to buy with an overlay or at a meeting, and throw off the photo of the original lens on the phone.

  • KalekseyG

And I even posted another photo, 44m-7 with an optical (not stretched due to multi-coating) scheme. Well, how can the first ring with the name be as deep as in 44m-4 if the front lens of multi-coated ones is much closer to the edge, in the same place the lens unit construction itself is longer and "squeezes" the first lens forward to the subject. On the MC, you can clearly see a ring that directly holds the first lens, but in ordinary people you cannot see it, it is covered by a ring with the name.

  • Oleg

Good afternoon, who will tell you which cap is suitable for this lens from those that the Chinese do? thanks!

    • Rodion

      Any 52 mm.

      • Oleg

52 mm is this not an inner diameter?

        • Rodion

But do the covers not go under the inner diameter?

          • Oleg

            exactly.
