Overview of the MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2

This is a very brief overview, this is due to the fact that the lenses:

  1. MC HELIOS-44M-4 58mm 1: 2
  2. MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2 (from this review)
  3. MC HELIOS-44M-6 58mm 1: 2
  4. MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2

were produced at the Jupiter factory (Valdai lenses) and have the inscription 'Zenit' near the front lens, mechanically completely identical. For example, if you read my Review MC HELIOS-44M-7 58mm 1: 2, you will know everything about the MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2 lens. The only difference is the different resolution of the Helios-44M- MS lenses.Х. Speaking roughly, the greater the serial number 44M-Х, the better the sharpness of the lens. Rumor has it that the name of the lens was determined after testing its resolution. Thus, all MC HELIOS-44M-X 58mm 1: 2 lenses are copies of each other.

Due to the fact that a lot of time has passed since the release of Helios lenses, it is worth choosing according to the quality of the proposed copy. MS versions are preferable.

Everything is filmed on Canon 350D without processing. The lens gives the legendary background swirl in the out-of-focus area. How to use Soviet old lenses on modern Nikon cameras read here, and on Canon here.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

Conclusions

MC HELIOS-44M-5 58mm 1: 2 is a good creative lens. Very similar to its twin brothers of the MC Helios-44M-X series.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

Another handsome man in my esteemed collection! What can I say to all of the above. I could not understand this lens for a long time, but after several dozen times of unsuccessful shootings I still managed to recognize and feel its character. I got a couple of simply stunning photos that I cannot repeat but with one other objective ... In comparison with Zenitar 50 1.7, at first I liked Zenittar more, and when I realized how to talk to Helios)) now I like Helios 44-5 more. Maybe it's an accident or maybe not ... Try it .. Experiment, it's worth it !!! Maybe a pleasant surprise will await you and you will start talking to him in the language of lizards))

Can you have an opinion on 7100?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I think it’s a great camera, for whom the coverage area is important for dots, then in 1.3x mode it has no equal. Want another article? https://radojuva.com.ua/2013/03/obzor-ms-helios-77m-1-8-50mm/

Nikon 5000 camera. Helios 44M-5 lens. M42 adapter with lens (simple), ordered through a link on this site. This adapter does not squeeze the diaphragm pin, so I solved the problem by squeezing (removing) the torsion spring from under the plate. When confirming focusing on the subject by Nikon, the focus, however, is in fact absent. It takes a little twist of the ring so that the focus is in place. In this case, the object loses sharpness in the viewfinder. Ie it is induced almost at random. After a dozen shots, the skill comes. Those. the moment of sharpness is not on the green dot, but immediately after it disappears. What could be the reason?

  • Victor

Arkady tell me on Canon600d such a lens is suitable? Thanks!

  • Vadim

But how to switch the diaphragm if installed for example on a Canon 600d? as I understand it, the diaphragm can no longer be switched and you have to shoot only on an open hole? autofocus can not be done on it?

Hello! I would like to know this ... I have this lens (Helios 44-5), and there is an opportunity to purchase an mc to-1 teleconverter, either wave 9 ... attention, question) ... which would be better for a 44-5 macro with a converter, or wave 9 ?

  • Vyacheslav

I got such an eczemary with Zenit 122 to the already existing G44M-4 without MS. Tightened the points in enlightenment on the front lens and decently dust inside, bought it all the same. After wiping with microfiber and Lenspen, the front and rear lenses were found to be in a normal state, but also still strained the dust mainly from the back of the lens block on the side of the camera. Vseravno lens 2 decided to take a chance, looked at some review on the G44m analysis before removing the lens block, if it is not difficult to disassemble from the lens hood it is most difficult to dismantle the diaphragm mechanism, it’s good that everything is fine with it. To unscrew the front disc with inscriptions from the hood, you don’t need any special devices; you hold the lens between the knees, insert 2 holes from the paste into the 2 holes on the ring and unscrew the ring, then three screws securing the hood to the helicode, three screws securing the lens block to the helicode and respecting the lens block is free. It so happened that it was not difficult to unscrew the rear ring and the front one did not yield, as a result of which access was obtained to three elements from six and one side of the fourth element. At first, it was generally not clear how the dust gets into the lens block because all the elements are fixed rigidly in the lens block and the lens block just walks all the way in contrast to autofocus lenses where the front element moves and sucks the dust. Then I figured it out and realized how this happens, between the third and fourth elements, if you count the aperture blades from the side of the camera, they are controlled by the lever, this is exactly the place where the dust falls into the lens unit, because it is at least not sealed, however, there are between the lenses adjusting rings through which dust is difficult to get. I didn’t succeed in perfectly cleaning; I did this with a cloth with microfiber and lenzpen. Small fibers remain from microfiber, so if you just do it with a cloth, it’s better not to do anything and leave it as it is, the charcoal pencil really helped out, it’s lenzpen, after it there are small particles that are easily blown away by mouth. You could just blow it completely with compressed air in a humid room with an ionizer and the result would probably be close to the first one, because I did not have many dust particles inside and I did not get access to the front three lenses.

  • Oleg

How can this be achieved? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBDtt8n0O5kso that aperture control works?

  • Tigran

Good afternoon, thanks for the review. I have a Sony SLT-A58K, immediately after the review I ordered an M42 adapter for Sony and in Avito I bought zenith for 700 rubles, with a Helios 44m-4 lens. I like everything, it's just super.

    • Alina

good afternoon, Tigran, but I didn’t find on the internet that the m42 adapter is suitable for the sony a58 model ... I have a helios 44m-4 available, and I’m going to buy a Sony A58 the other day, but I don’t know what to do with adapter. Tell me, is it really so necessary?

  • KalekseyG

without an adapter in any way. Sonya needs Sonya

  • Vyacheslav S.

Hello! Do I understand correctly that this lens with M42 thread? And to install it on the 1100D M42-Canon EOS adapter is needed?
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      You understand correctly.

  • Vyacheslav S.

Thank you Arkady! The closest such lens was found in Belarus. The adapter will have to be ordered from the Chinese brothers)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

In fact, Helios data is very common.

      • Vyacheslav S.

Arkady, I live in provincial Novozybkov. It’s almost impossible to find anything like this here. The regional center is 200 km., So Belarus is the closest)))

        • Arkady Shapoval

clear :) good luck with Helios!

          • Vyacheslav S.

            Thank you :)

  • Ostap

Hello! Interesting fact and also want to hear the opinion of pros and amateurs. I bought this lens. Put on his Canon 60D. Before this test Zenitar-M friend. Briefly what is the question. Why Zenith’s manual focusing is much shorter than that of Helios 44 M-5, that is, from infinity to minimum, Helios has to twist the lens for a very long time.

And another question for thought. Put a chip adapter on 44 M-5, so it always misses by a couple of centimeters ... the same thing happened with Zenitar. There are reasons?

    • BB

The long travel of the focus ring on the manual is a plus, it's easier to aim, and for accurate focus use LiveView - and it will get exactly where you pointed :)

      • Ostap

Well, LiveView is somehow not mine) The problem is if you need to quickly catch the focus, but I still have to turn half a turn)

What about the miss of the focus sensor?

        • BB

If you need to quickly catch the focus, then you need to use autofocus glasses, and the whole recipe :)

And this happens with chips, read the advice on how Canon works with manual optics, perhaps this question is raised there - the problem is clearly with the chip, not with the lens. I don't use chips on the manual, and in general I have Nikon :)

  • Ostap

And another question. What interesting info can I learn from the lens serial number?

  • Evgenij

m42-nikon adapter (or canon) can be bought here http://olx.ua/list/user/Bewr/

  • Yana

Question. What adapter is needed to combine the Helios 44 M-4 and Sony alpha 5000?
Where can I buy, advise pliz!

  • Victoria

Hello! What is the difference between Helios 44-2 and Helios 44M-5 (not MS)? Which is better?

    • Nikolay Fedorovich

      The same.

  • Lilia

Help the teapot, the d7000 adapter is the easiest without a chip or lens and this lens is in the article.
Connected put m instead of af and the descent does not work, i.e. does not photograph.

    I got the wrong adapter?

    • So KalekseyG

Wrong M. M on the ring with PASM mode and green

  • anonym

I put the M42 chip adapter on the Helios 44m-5 and the focus reaches 4 as much as possible, and then it doesn’t go stupidly. a stud rests on the adapter, which works on a fitting diaphragm

    • KalekseyG

Not only the hairpin, but the entire back of where this hairpin sticks out. Saw Fedya, saw.

  • Marina

Good afternoon! A question. I have a Helios 44m-5 lens and a Zenit e and Zenit et cameras. Neither one nor the second. Aperture closes when the shutter button is pressed. That is, nothing presses on the aperture closing lever on the lens. I have never found out whether this lens is compatible with such cameras. And what needs to be done to make it work.

    • B. R. P.

Either find another Zenith, with a pusher, or fix the diaphragm pin (there are different ways).
