Canon 650D Review

For the ability to review the camera Canon EOS 650D body Many thanks to Vitaly Yakovlev, who sent me a camera for review from another area.

Canon 650D Review

Canon 650D is the newest, latest hobby cropped DSLR model as of early 2013. I was very surprised that the Canon 650D is built on the basis of a relatively old matrix. A similar matrix was used in Canon 550D. Of course, the Canon 650D uses an updated matrix paired with a new processor, which allowed us to reach the limit of ISO 25.600 (H mode).

Canon 650D uses CMOS sensor on 18MP, in the end, you can get pictures from 5184 on 3456 pixels (total 17.915.904 pixels). Nikon and Sony already use 24-megapixel matrixes in their models. Of course, not in megapixels camera level is measured. Canon 650D can use ISO 100-12.800, the sensitivity range can be extended to ISO H (25.600). In general, it is very interesting that just ISO 12.800 and ISO H 25.600 can be used for shooting photos, but ISO 12.800 is already called ISO 12.800 for shooting video, and the ISO sensitivity value of 25,600 is not available at all. Also, in the automatic ISO mode, only values up to ISO 6400 are available. I believe that the matrix was not completely updated.

The Canon 650D is Canon's first DSLR with a true Continuous auto focus when shooting video 'Servo AF'. Video mode is activated by a special switch near the wheel for selecting shooting modes. Record and stop video recording by pressing the Live View button. You can shoot videos in Full HD 1920x1080 format with a frequency of 30, 25, 24 fps, H.264 codec in MOV format. Sound is recorded from the stereo microphone, which is located on the camera near the flash. One speaker is responsible for playing sound on the camera. When shooting video in M mode, you can control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO speed. Shutter speed cannot be set below 1/30 second. In Servo AF focus mode, it is very convenient to select the desired focus area using the touch screen. For the video camera, the Canon 650D is very well suited.

Canon 650D has touchscreen (touchscreen), which seemed to me a very convenient innovation in modern digital mirror photographic construction. Using the touch screen is very convenient to select any desired focus point when working in Live View. Also, it is very convenient to navigate through the menu and very, very convenient and comfortable to view the shot material. The display supports multi-touch, this allows you to zoom in on the captured material with two fingers. The display responds only to the fingers, gloves cannot use the display. Navigating photos taken is similar to how it is done on modern mobile smartphones, tablets, etc. I expected that the touch display would be an unnecessary element in the camera, for which you would have to pay extra money, but everything turned out to be the opposite. You can turn off the camera control function using the touch screen and use the usual buttons to control it.

Canon 650D has a focusing system based on 9 cross-type focus sensors. The same phase focusing system is used in the advanced camera. Canon 60D. But unlike other cameras, the Canon 650D has a special hybrid focus system in Live View and when shooting video.

Example photo on a Canon EOS 650D at high ISO

Example photo on a Canon EOS 650D at high ISO

Hybrid Focus Method in my eyes was not a panacea at all. Phase focusing in Live View mode allows you to quickly focus the lens in the area of focus, but then fine-tune the focus using the usual fidgeting of the lens in contrast-detect focus mode. In general, the Canon 650D focuses faster in Live View and when shooting video than contrast focusing cameras. Still, the focusing speed of the Canon 650D in Live View mode and when shooting video remains slow enough. Also, the Canon 650D can use hybrid phase focusing. only in the central area of the image... By the way, they say that if you use specially designed lenses for focusing through Live View - Canon STM, it can speed up and improve focusing. I believe that Hybrid CMOS is a huge step forward, it just needs to be improved.

Example photo on a Canon EOS 650D at high ISO

Example photo on a Canon EOS 650D at high ISO. The noise level is very high.

The camera can shoot at a speed 5 frames per second... Believe me, 5 frames per second is already a serious indicator for an amateur camera. Truth, frame buffer, which is the place where pictures are placed before recording them on a memory card, the Canon 650D is quite small. I used a Canon 650D camera with a SanDisk Extreme PRO 95MB / s memory card SDHC Class 10 16GB. If you disable all additional features, such as:

  • Light Priority (aka D +)
  • Perifer. lighting (vignetting control)
  • Color aberration (lens aberration control)
  • Shumopod. when it lasts. shutter speed
  • Shumopod. at high ISO
  • ISO range extension

Then when shooting in RAW format, the buffer shows 6 shots, in JPEG L format 9 shots. With my quick memory card, the length of a real series of pictures is 1-2 frames longer than it shows frame buffer... When I used a slower memory card, the camera started to slow down after the buffer was full. If you enable all the additional functions described above, then in RAW format the camera can take 6 frames in a row, and in JPEG L format only 3 frames. In general, with a fast memory card, after filling the memory buffer, the camera simply continues to shoot, but at a lower rate of fire, while it does not 'freeze'. For instance, Canon 1100D, after filling the buffer, it slows down a lot.

I also want to note that the Canon 650D has something like an auto focus lamp, but in fact it works as a timer (delayed) shutter indicator. Low-light auto focus assist illumination is provided by the built-in flash in strobe mode. I don't like this 'blinking' backlight.

Canon 650D sample photo

On the camera you can find the following ports:

  • USB 2.0
  • HDMI mini
  • remote control connector
  • stereo microphone jack

Also, the camera has a number of additional useful features:

  • Cleaning the matrix from dust. Can be set to 'Auto clean' in which the camera will clean the sensor every time the camera is turned on or off
  • Auto power off function
  • Sets of Picture Controls
  • Different auto focus settings: Tracking, FlexiZone Single, FlexiZone Multi, High Speed
  • Remote flash function. This is a very useful thing.
  • Noise reduction function in burst shooting NR. Combines the last 4 pictures, does not work in RAW, RAW + JPEG. The same function increases the dynamic range of the image.
  • and a number of others, by the way, a request to users of the Canon 650D, please unsubscribe, can the Canon 650D sync with an external flash at short shutter speeds?

Personal impressions

I really liked the Canon 650D camera with its touch-screen rotary display. As for the noise level, the operation of the focusing system with the new hybrid phase sensors, and the quality of the images in general, I was left a little upset. You can find examples of photos on the Canon 650D in the lens overview Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS II

More examples of photos (with processing) on the lens Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 55-250mm 1: 4-5.6 IS II for Radozhiva kindly provided Alexander Frolov.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions:

The Canon 650D is a great amateur camera. It attracts with its light weight, good rate of fire, touchscreen display and ample video shooting capabilities. Recommend.

Nice camera. It's a pity that Canon prices are traditionally higher ...

I recently took a 650d for myself and agree with Arkady in everything that is described in the article. Very unexpectedly for myself, I was pleased with the touch screen. Then on other cameras I poked out of habit :) Now I think that I will part with the d5200. I definitely have a camera with a rotating screen in the kit, most likely because the first DSLR was Nikon D5100. After d5100 he took 600d, he was replaced by d5200, and now, for the sake of the touch display, he took 650d. It is extremely convenient to have more or less normal autofocus in video and in life-view. It seems that there was some kind of autofocus on the d5200 and d3300, but here it is much better. Not 70d, not dormouse, but also very good. True, the buzzing of the whale 18-55 is annoying. The 24-70 2.8L is already faster and quieter to focus, but the 70-200 2.8L is even better. True, with a small carcass, the telephoto is already extremely difficult to hold, 2d with a batblock and this glass in his hands sits more confidently. But with 40-55is it is quite convenient and easy to use (but again buzzes and focuses slowly). Absolutely silently, quickly and clearly everything goes to 250-10is stm. But 18 40 STM buzzes a bit and focuses subjectively slower than the width. In general, an excellent device. In comparison with the 2.8d, I was pleased with the rate of fire of 600 frames per second (I like to report, but there it is necessary) and the intra-camera frame. Actually, I kept d5 for xdr and 5200 frames, but now the touch screen outweighs - I leave 5d.

    • Pastor

After a couple of months, I noticed a number of minuses 650d for myself, suddenly someone will also be interested:
      1) The series in the Jepeg is really annoying - very short. 3 frames and that's it, then with slowdown. I tried different cards - the results change, but not much. Really annoying. The same d5200 quietly shoots two seconds at the same 5 frames per second, but here one second is not entirely. It is extremely inconvenient for reporting, especially when compared with a used 40d camera, which is twice as cheap on the market, which hollows a series of 3-4 seconds at 6.5 frames per second without any problems.
Of course, this is important only in the reporting, and even then turning off the improvers or removing the equal can increase the series. And not everyone needs to peck a series for 2-3 seconds.
      2) Color reproduction is not super. With elks, everything is fine more or less (24-105, 24-70, 70-200), but with 18-55 or 55-250 it’s not super. Not bad, of course, but the same d5200 as for me gives out more pleasant colors in a jeep. Again, if you recall the d80, which you can buy 4 pieces for a used 650d price, then the colors clearly lose to the canon.
This is a subjective indicator, and everything can be corrected in a ravah, but still a jepeg from a carcass is even better with simple glasses.
      3) HDR in the carcass is so-so. At d5200, I calmly remove the CDR and are usually satisfied with the result. In the d650, the HDR is clearly worse, the transitions are too poorly designed, there are failures in the shadows or highlights, and in general the 650d is able to cover less contrasting scenes than the d5200.
Again, taking just a few frames and reducing everything on a computer will be no worse than any other camera, sometimes I dabble in the in-camera CDR.
      4) The autofocus in the video seems to be pleasing, it seems that it is hovering on the touch of the screen, but it still comes out much more reliable and faster with your hands.
For a beginner or a lover of autofocus in a video, this is not a problem, and I hardly use an autofocus chip, because it’s still more convenient to visit with your hands.
      5) ISO and DD noticeably lose to d5200. On ISO 1600, the 650d has already noticeable noises and color transitions decay, and at 3200 it is already the limit of a more or less normal frame. d5200 shoots well at 1600, and 3200 is quite good. Sometimes I also use 6400 - it is quite possible to draw out a decent frame.
Again, for most ISO 1600 it is not so often used, where it is not enough, it is better to highlight it with a flash, and on low ISOs, everything is fine with 650d.
In general, the cons are controversial and far from noticeable for everyone, but decided to describe them. In connection with them, I leave the d5200 for now and I think who is cooler next :)

      • Val

Crazy to you! Meni bully potrebnі tsі details.

      • Dima

And how is the d5100 next to the 650d in terms of noise? 650d will clearly win in terms of af and control (it's banal there are more key buttons) the case is also much better.

        • B. R. P.

I think +\- is the same.

          • Victor

As well as the body, handling and "much better" autofocus.

            • Dima

D5100 merges by color. A canon bzk with the same matrix (650d) just staggered the vaunted d5100 at dawn. And yes, af on d 5100 is complete shit.

My 650D has an interesting problem - when focusing in the viewfinder, there is no sharpness, and when I get the frame, it is there! What could be the problem?)

      diopter adjustment?

The fact of the matter is that she is not
I described the problem a little incorrectly - when there is sharpness at autofocus. I try to set it in the manual, I see sharpness and nothing happens, although I shoot on the manual for a very long time and see sharpness in the viewfinder

        • Alexey

Maybe a mirror, if you are sure that there is no eyepiece adjustment. I had a problem, at one time, at the zenith, before the shutter was cocked, the sharpness in the eyepiece corresponded to the real one, after - it did not look sharp in the eyepiece, and the photo turned out to be different.

Can I connect the camera and phone to get the photo right on my mobile device?

    • anonym

      no

    • anonym

You can use sd wifi memory card.

    • Mio

You can - you need a phone with OTG support and an OTG cable.
Then just connect the camera to the phone via cable (like a USB flash drive), just like to a computer.

I would like to hear the opinion of people versed in the topic.
I consider it as the first mirror with the aim of shooting everyday topics, nature ...

Confuses the model year of manufacture. And a set of lenses, although it may not be superfluous.
Maybe there are other options in the budget up to TR 25?
I would be grateful for the advice.

    • Arkady Shapoval

650d is still quite a running model, the set is not bad, just for amateur shooting, you can safely take it.

      • Alexey

Thank you for your prompt reply. And about optics, in a nutshell, what can you say?

  • Victor

good afternoon. tell me in 650d there is a built-in editor for gluing panoramas ????

    • Vadim

Although not relevant, I will answer: no.

  • Vadim

I want to add a little:

On my Canon 650D, the built-in flash began to work with skips (count a hundred does not work). It turns out by reading the forums. this is their weakness (including the 600D). with a run of only 11 thousand, already such a nuance.

  • Vladislav

    Hello.
Arkady, and who is close, the question is - it is possible to take a Canon 150D 60-18is or a Canon 55D 650-18is for 55 bucks (the same price). Both are in excellent condition. What to choose, advise me, as an advanced amateur. I don't make money with a camera. The 650d's video function is much better than the 60d's video, so this function overpowers and makes a choice. And what experience tells you to take.

    • Roman

      60D - Moisture-Proof, Greater Battery, 1/8000 Shutter Speed
      650D - less weight, touchscreen

I would take 60D, these advantages are more important to me. You - see for yourself. Otherwise, the cameras are roughly the same.

      • Vladislav

You read the characteristics that I also read. I am interested in the opinion of the photographers who held and took pictures with these cameras.
Maybe someone else will answer 7

        • Roman

I noted the characteristics that are important to me, based on my own experience. And what revelations do you expect to hear?

I appreciate the water resistance so much that I would prefer 60D (and even 50D, and possibly 40D) to amateur 650D. But I can calmly shoot during fog or rain, near the pool or waist-deep in water, without fear of splashing. The battery life is critical for me, so 800-1000 frames are better than 400, I always have 2-3 spare batteries with me. Weight is absolutely not important, therefore for a tourist trip I will drag a heavy camera in my bag, I will compensate for the weight with compact lenses. And for serious shooting I’ll hook on the battery pack too. The rotary screen as well as the video functions are indifferent. 9 focus points are few, I would look towards 7D - there are at least 19 of them and it’s much more convenient to control the focus points with the joystick. But you have a choice of two cameras. 1/8000 - a nice addition for shooting on a sunny day in the open, if you have class optics at least 1.4-1.8. The upper display is only needed when shooting with a tripod, I do not remember to use it.

Take the second option - you plan to record a lot of video and focus using a touchscreen, do not want to carry a heavy camera that takes up a lot of space and do not plan to take new lenses (well, or some 55-250 in a pair). Then the 650D is right for you.

These are objective criteria. If you want advice like, "Dude, take the 650D, I have this awesome camera" - well wait for this advice.

        • Oleg

He held and fotkal previous generations 50D and 500D.
The two-digit series in terms of convenience and quality covers the three-digit series like a bull sheep. This includes tactile sensations, and controls, and optimal exposure, and body material (for 50D), and the size, and shutter life, and pentaprism instead of a pentamer (a brighter viewfinder), and interchangeable focusing glasses (for lovers of manual lenses), and rate of fire, etc. etc.
I agree with Roman. 60 or 50 (even more preferable because there is a fine tuning of autofocus for lenses)

          • Roman

60D and 650D are almost identical in shooting speed.

      • Vadim

The 60D has no dust and moisture protection and no back / front focus adjustment either. The 50D does. And then these capabilities moved to 7D.

        • Alexey

Sixty have protection, but worse than fifty or seven.

        • Alexey

          and another frame

        • Alexey

In addition, the sixties have the ability to record AF corrections for SEVEN lenses, but only in the SC, an ordinary user will not be able to do this.

  • Andrei.

Arkady, you were unsatisfied with the quality of your shots because you took them in the landscape plot program. Early spring, sunny day, cloudless blue sky, a lot of light, and the device sets the shutter speed to 1/160, but closes the aperture to 13 (this photo is near a tree ) and shutter speed 1/200, but aperture 13 (photo by the lake). If you went into manual mode and set the shutter speed
1 / 400-1 / 500, and the aperture is 7, or 8, then the photo would be better. Look at what aperture sets
in his very good pictures, Alexander Frolov. There, as a rule, 5,6-8. Two shots from 11. Here we draw the appropriate conclusion.

  • Pokemon

The color from the camera is very pleasant, today I was convinced of this myself.
Photos of Arkady above only confirm this.
    Processing was in DPP, lenses 50 / 1.8 and 85 / 1.8.

  • Sergei

What I don't understand is why, when viewing two frames from different cameras (shooting the same object) with different megapixels at 100% magnification, the picture from a camera with a large number of megapixels seems less sharp? In reality, if it were not for the comparison, it would seem normal, but when there are two frames next to it, it catches your eye. And it seems like the optics are the same on cameras, and the "standard" mode. I saw this on the network more than once. Why is that? They say that the more megapixels, the less requirements for optics. Or is it just it seems, and if you bring a higher resolution to a lower one with the help of resize - will there be parity? Can someone explain?

    • Roman

On the contrary, the more megapixels, the greater the requirements for optics. The lens itself also has, roughly speaking, resolution, so an old and not very high-quality lens will not allow using the advantages of a multi-pixel matrix. Which, moreover, will be even more noisy when it comes to matrices of approximately the same generation.

  • Sergei

Yes, it probably is. They just say that for multi-pixel cameras the requirements for optics are lower because how many megapixels a lens can resolve, so much will be resolved on such a matrix. And if the matrix is small-pixel, then only elka will give a good picture. Hence, this logic probably developed for me.
So it turns out that if the resize is carried out then the pictures will become the same in terms of "clarity"?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In my opinion, they say just the opposite.

  • Sergei

So I got it wrong. But what about the resize - do I understand correctly?

  • Sergei

Hello. Arkady, thank you very much for the material. I read, study, delve a lot.
I want to take photographs. I understand that the quality of the photo depends more on my hands, but still. Dear readers, please advise to make a choice. Nikon d5200 or Canon 650d? Which system to choose and which lenses to work with?

    • Taras

I can offer a radical solution - to start with the Sony system, or rather with the A mount. Cheap and undervalued (in the powerful marketing shadow of Canon and Nikon) devices. Matrix stabilizer that allows you to shoot handheld Jupiter 21a at sunset without stirring. Focus picking in manual mode, which you can only dream of in the same 650D (Magic Lantern does not count). Cheap and affordable Minolta A lenses for every choice.
And most importantly - ridiculous prices. In my opinion, it is worth paying attention to cropped cameras: mirror - a580, translucent mirror - a57 and mirrorless a3500 (a3000). The latter is interesting exclusively (!) For work and enjoyment of manual lenses of Soviet production. This is my arsenal of lenses.
      Sony sal18552
Minolta 35-70 f: 3.5-4.5 (the same, but with f: 4 (baby) is better, but more expensive)
      Minolta 70-210 f: 3.5-4 5. Analogue of a beer can.
Tamron 18-250 as a travel zoom
Well, the Soviet-made Helios 44m, Jupiter 37a, the aforementioned Jupiter 21m and Mir1 Brussels export version.
      Cameras: a290 (the latest camera with a "tube" CCD-matrix), a58 and a3500
Since the end of September I have become the owner of a Canon 650D (already on the way, practically new) - so let's compare whether I'm right or not ...

      • Pokemon

In fact, there are not very many lenses for this mount on the secondary.
And in good condition, and even less aperture.
        And yes cameras, for home use - a580, a57, a77, a850, a900.
The latter - full frame - were very much appreciated for their "color".
Their matrix was similar to the one in the more expensive Nikon D3x. However, some fellow photo forums claimed that the a850 / a900 had a better color profile than the D3x.

  • Vio

sold 800D today to buy 650D tomorrow. That's all you need to know about this camera :)))

    • Roman

And what is the reason for such a strange exchange?

      • ba3lur

and no wonder the 1100 \ 1200 \ 1300D models are better than the subsequent ones in the 2000 \ 4000D series

  • ba3lur

comparing 650 and 600D, I found that the matrix seems to be the same, maybe the model is different, but for some reason, in terms of color depth, the dynamic range and low light ISO, the 600th is better, and somehow I found that on the 650th there were complaints about allergenic fading rubber ... I would like an answer from owners of the 650's

    • a guest

Complaints about allergenic fading rubber were in the first batches, then the problem was eliminated. Moreover, the replacement of linings was made free of charge at service centers. Does your camera have this drawback? You can punch on the official website by the camera serial number.

    • a guest

In terms of color depth, they both have 14-bit Canon RAW. Try to compare non-camera jpeg.

    • a guest

When compared in terms of dynamic range, color depth and ISO, there are almost no differences, or rather scanty when tested in laboratory conditions. A difference in color depth of less than 1 bit is not discernible to the human eye, if the sensors of the two cameras differ by less than 0,5 EV in dynamic range, then we will not be able to see the difference either, there is also no big difference in the working ISO range. So it is probably impossible to distinguish the images from these cameras. Work in RAW, it probably won't make a difference.

Tell me, I have a 650d, I'm thinking about replacing it with a 200d with stm 18-55 (used for 19000). Does it make sense to do this? Is it better than 650? I use a camera for home photos of children, video.

    • Alexander T.

He's a lot better. There's Dual Pixel AF. Better to buy a 250D right away. :)

I would like to ask you how to shoot, so that during shooting you can see the image of what is being shot on the screen, and not through the window?

    • Victor

      so

Hello. I got an old (old) flash. With shoe sync. I tried all modes, but didn’t puff! Closed the display - it puffs! How do I make it work with the 65d display on? I can't find a description of working with rare puffs. People use Helios ...

    • B. R. P.

There is no electronics in Helios) Look, do not burn the camera.

      • WukaWuka

Well, the synchro in the shoe seems to be low-voltage. Otherwise, the smoke has long been gone. Synchronization mode issue is open. TTL or without (how do other modes affect the shoe - shoe modes?). But closing the screen lets you puff. So it works with the viewfinder, having turned it off ?!

turn off the “quiet shooting” mode in LV. about it written in the manual for the camera. If this mode is enabled, then shooting in LV is performed with the electronic first curtain and the external flash ignition pulse is not transmitted to the central contact of the shoe. In this mode, only native kenon flashes can work.

      • WukaWuka

Thank you. Already at the dacha. I'll try it next week. Although it is not clear why it works with the display closed / off. Or quiet work with the display is tied ...
I rarely use it. We must try again :)

        • Aleksey68

in LV, the “silent shooting” mode is enabled by default.
another thing is that I do not remember whether it is possible to turn it off in junior cameras. I myself do not have such cameras and do not shoot with them, I only shoot with double-digit cameras and higher. everything is managed there. so it may well be that on junior cameras this mode is in principle not disabled. if so, then shooting with flash in LV on such cameras is possible only when using a native or 100% compatible radio synchronizer / external flash. these are purely marketing restrictions.

Hello ! Here I got into the hands of 650D.
The problem is interesting)))) Through live view everything is OK (in all modes, it doesn’t matter Av or Tv, even on full auto), and when you shoot through the viewfinder, you get overexposure, you have to lower the exposure by as much as -2 ......
I tried two lenses, EXACTLY does not depend on them!
What is the problem and did not understand yet………… With the video everything is in order!
I updated the firmware, reset the settings, and so on ....
    Can anyone suggest what?
I punched through the serial number, the camera does not appear in the service center, that is, they did not apply for repairs ... ..
In appearance, the bolts did not spin.

  • Oleg

    So no one answered

    • Victor

Well, if the serial was punched and no one applied for repairs, it's time to do it))

In lv, you have metering according to the matrix, and through the viewfinder - according to the metering sensors. The conclusion is obvious.

      • Oleg

And what is the obvious conclusion? :)))))
