Canon 650D is the newest, latest hobby cropped DSLR model as of early 2013. I was very surprised that the Canon 650D is built on the basis of a relatively old matrix. A similar matrix was used in Canon 550D. Of course, the Canon 650D uses an updated matrix paired with a new processor, which allowed us to reach the limit of ISO 25.600 (H mode).

Canon 650D uses CMOS sensor on 18MP, in the end, you can get pictures from 5184 on 3456 pixels (total 17.915.904 pixels). Nikon and Sony already use 24-megapixel matrixes in their models. Of course, not in megapixels camera level is measured. Canon 650D can use ISO 100-12.800, the sensitivity range can be extended to ISO H (25.600). In general, it is very interesting that just ISO 12.800 and ISO H 25.600 can be used for shooting photos, but ISO 12.800 is already called ISO 12.800 for shooting video, and the ISO sensitivity value of 25,600 is not available at all. Also, in the automatic ISO mode, only values up to ISO 6400 are available. I believe that the matrix was not completely updated.

The Canon 650D is Canon's first DSLR with a true Continuous auto focus when shooting video 'Servo AF'. Video mode is activated by a special switch near the wheel for selecting shooting modes. Record and stop video recording by pressing the Live View button. You can shoot videos in Full HD 1920x1080 format with a frequency of 30, 25, 24 fps, H.264 codec in MOV format. Sound is recorded from the stereo microphone, which is located on the camera near the flash. One speaker is responsible for playing sound on the camera. When shooting video in M mode, you can control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO speed. Shutter speed cannot be set below 1/30 second. In Servo AF focus mode, it is very convenient to select the desired focus area using the touch screen. For the video camera, the Canon 650D is very well suited.

Canon 650D has touchscreen (touchscreen), which seemed to me a very convenient innovation in modern digital mirror photographic construction. Using the touch screen is very convenient to select any desired focus point when working in Live View. Also, it is very convenient to navigate through the menu and very, very convenient and comfortable to view the shot material. The display supports multi-touch, this allows you to zoom in on the captured material with two fingers. The display responds only to the fingers, gloves cannot use the display. Navigating photos taken is similar to how it is done on modern mobile smartphones, tablets, etc. I expected that the touch display would be an unnecessary element in the camera, for which you would have to pay extra money, but everything turned out to be the opposite. You can turn off the camera control function using the touch screen and use the usual buttons to control it.

Canon 650D has a focusing system based on 9 cross-type focus sensors. The same phase focusing system is used in the advanced camera. Canon 60D. But unlike other cameras, the Canon 650D has a special hybrid focus system in Live View and when shooting video.

Hybrid Focus Method in my eyes was not a panacea at all. Phase focusing in Live View mode allows you to quickly focus the lens in the area of focus, but then fine-tune the focus using the usual fidgeting of the lens in contrast-detect focus mode. In general, the Canon 650D focuses faster in Live View and when shooting video than contrast focusing cameras. Still, the focusing speed of the Canon 650D in Live View mode and when shooting video remains slow enough. Also, the Canon 650D can use hybrid phase focusing. only in the central area of the image... By the way, they say that if you use specially designed lenses for focusing through Live View - Canon STM, it can speed up and improve focusing. I believe that Hybrid CMOS is a huge step forward, it just needs to be improved.

The camera can shoot at a speed 5 frames per second... Believe me, 5 frames per second is already a serious indicator for an amateur camera. Truth, frame buffer, which is the place where pictures are placed before recording them on a memory card, the Canon 650D is quite small. I used a Canon 650D camera with a SanDisk Extreme PRO 95MB / s memory card SDHC Class 10 16GB. If you disable all additional features, such as:
- Light Priority (aka D +)
- Perifer. lighting (vignetting control)
- Color aberration (lens aberration control)
- Shumopod. when it lasts. shutter speed
- Shumopod. at high ISO
- ISO range extension
Then when shooting in RAW format, the buffer shows 6 shots, in JPEG L format 9 shots. With my quick memory card, the length of a real series of pictures is 1-2 frames longer than it shows frame buffer... When I used a slower memory card, the camera started to slow down after the buffer was full. If you enable all the additional functions described above, then in RAW format the camera can take 6 frames in a row, and in JPEG L format only 3 frames. In general, with a fast memory card, after filling the memory buffer, the camera simply continues to shoot, but at a lower rate of fire, while it does not 'freeze'. For instance, Canon 1100D, after filling the buffer, it slows down a lot.

I also want to note that the Canon 650D has something like an auto focus lamp, but in fact it works as a timer (delayed) shutter indicator. Low-light auto focus assist illumination is provided by the built-in flash in strobe mode. I don't like this 'blinking' backlight.

I really liked the Canon 650D camera with its touch-screen rotary display. I recently took a 650d for myself and agree with Arkady in everything that is described in the article. Very unexpectedly for myself, I was pleased with the touch screen. Then on other cameras I poked out of habit :) Now I think that I will part with the d5200. I definitely have a camera with a rotating screen in the kit, most likely because the first DSLR was Nikon D5100. After d5100 he took 600d, he was replaced by d5200, and now, for the sake of the touch display, he took 650d. It is extremely convenient to have more or less normal autofocus in video and in life-view. It seems that there was some kind of autofocus on the d5200 and d3300, but here it is much better. Not 70d, not dormouse, but also very good. True, the buzzing of the whale 18-55 is annoying. The 24-70 2.8L is already faster and quieter to focus, but the 70-200 2.8L is even better. True, with a small carcass, the telephoto is already extremely difficult to hold, 2d with a batblock and this glass in his hands sits more confidently. But with 40-55is it is quite convenient and easy to use (but again buzzes and focuses slowly). Absolutely silently, quickly and clearly everything goes to 250-10is stm. But 18 40 STM buzzes a bit and focuses subjectively slower than the width. In general, an excellent device. In comparison with the 2.8d, I was pleased with the rate of fire of 600 frames per second (I like to report, but there it is necessary) and the intra-camera frame. Actually, I kept d5 for xdr and 5200 frames, but now the touch screen outweighs - I leave 5d.
After a couple of months, I noticed a number of minuses 650d for myself, suddenly someone will also be interested:
1) The series in the Jepeg is really annoying - very short. 3 frames and that's it, then with slowdown. I tried different cards - the results change, but not much. Really annoying. The same d5200 quietly shoots two seconds at the same 5 frames per second, but here one second is not entirely. It is extremely inconvenient for reporting, especially when compared with a used 40d camera, which is twice as cheap on the market, which hollows a series of 3-4 seconds at 6.5 frames per second without any problems.
Of course, this is important only in the reporting, and even then turning off the improvers or removing the equal can increase the series. And not everyone needs to peck a series for 2-3 seconds.
2) Color reproduction is not super. With elks, everything is fine more or less (24-105, 24-70, 70-200), but with 18-55 or 55-250 it’s not super. Not bad, of course, but the same d5200 as for me gives out more pleasant colors in a jeep. Again, if you recall the d80, which you can buy 4 pieces for a used 650d price, then the colors clearly lose to the canon.
This is a subjective indicator, and everything can be corrected in a ravah, but still a jepeg from a carcass is even better with simple glasses.
3) HDR in the carcass is so-so. At d5200, I calmly remove the CDR and are usually satisfied with the result. In the d650, the HDR is clearly worse, the transitions are too poorly designed, there are failures in the shadows or highlights, and in general the 650d is able to cover less contrasting scenes than the d5200.
Again, taking just a few frames and reducing everything on a computer will be no worse than any other camera, sometimes I dabble in the in-camera CDR.
4) The autofocus in the video seems to be pleasing, it seems that it is hovering on the touch of the screen, but it still comes out much more reliable and faster with your hands.
For a beginner or a lover of autofocus in a video, this is not a problem, and I hardly use an autofocus chip, because it’s still more convenient to visit with your hands.
5) ISO and DD noticeably lose to d5200. On ISO 1600, the 650d has already noticeable noises and color transitions decay, and at 3200 it is already the limit of a more or less normal frame. d5200 shoots well at 1600, and 3200 is quite good. Sometimes I also use 6400 - it is quite possible to draw out a decent frame.
Again, for most ISO 1600 it is not so often used, where it is not enough, it is better to highlight it with a flash, and on low ISOs, everything is fine with 650d.
In general, the cons are controversial and far from noticeable for everyone, but decided to describe them. In connection with them, I leave the d5200 for now and I think who is cooler next :)

I appreciate the water resistance so much that I would prefer 60D (and even 50D, and possibly 40D) to amateur 650D. But I can calmly shoot during fog or rain, near the pool or waist-deep in water, without fear of splashing. The battery life is critical for me, so 800-1000 frames are better than 400, I always have 2-3 spare batteries with me. Weight is absolutely not important, therefore for a tourist trip I will drag a heavy camera in my bag, I will compensate for the weight with compact lenses. And for serious shooting I’ll hook on the battery pack too. The rotary screen as well as the video functions are indifferent. 9 focus points are few, I would look towards 7D - there are at least 19 of them and it’s much more convenient to control the focus points with the joystick. But you have a choice of two cameras. 1/8000 - a nice addition for shooting on a sunny day in the open, if you have class optics at least 1.4-1.8. The upper display is only needed when shooting with a tripod, I do not remember to use it.
Take the second option - you plan to record a lot of video and focus using a touchscreen, do not want to carry a heavy camera that takes up a lot of space and do not plan to take new lenses (well, or some 55-250 in a pair). Then the 650D is right for you.

Matrix stabilizer that allows you to shoot handheld Jupiter 21a at sunset without stirring. Focus picking in manual mode, which you can only dream of in the same 650D (Magic Lantern does not count). Cheap and affordable Minolta A lenses for every choice.
And most importantly - ridiculous prices. In my opinion, it is worth paying attention to cropped cameras: mirror - a580, translucent mirror - a57 and mirrorless a3500 (a3000). The latter is interesting exclusively (!) For work and enjoyment of manual lenses of Soviet production. This is my arsenal of lenses.

Complaints about allergenic fading rubber were in the first batches, then the problem was eliminated. Moreover, the replacement of linings was made free of charge at service centers. Does your camera have this drawback? You can punch on the official website by the camera serial number.
In terms of color depth, they both have 14-bit Canon RAW. Try to compare non-camera jpeg.
When compared in terms of dynamic range, color depth and ISO, there are almost no differences, or rather scanty when tested in laboratory conditions. A difference in color depth of less than 1 bit is not discernible to the human eye, if the sensors of the two cameras differ by less than 0,5 EV in dynamic range, then we will not be able to see the difference either, there is also no big difference in the working ISO range. So it is probably impossible to distinguish the images from these cameras. Work in RAW, it probably won't make a difference.
