For the opportunity review lens MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135 Many thanks to Igor Tihan.
This review presents a multi-coated version. The 'MC' in the lens name stands for 'МtionСloyal permeation '(often also called МultiproСbranching from an English like 'MC' - Multi Coating).
There are several modifications of JUPITER-37, produced at different times:
- MC Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135, 1990-2002 (the prefix 'MC' is placed before the lens name, this lens is shown in this review)
- Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135 MS, 1983-1986
- MC Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135, 1986-1989 (prefix 'MC' is placed before the lens name)
- Jupiter-37A MS-N-30 3.5 / 135, 1983-1984
- Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135since 1978
- Юпитер-37AМ 3,5/135, 1990-2002
Perhaps the weight of different versions is slightly different, you won't feel it to the touch. The letter 'M' most likely stands for 'Upgrade' the lens. If someone has more detailed information on the design difference, add it in the comments.
Therefore, in this review I will not dwell on a detailed description of the lens, but I will focus only on the difference in versions. If you read Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135 review, you will know everything about MC Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135.
Jupiter-37 is a legendary Soviet lens, super portraiture, easy to use, relatively cheap with excellent image quality. Both versions of 'MC' and 'Not MC' are good.
The MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135 lens is very well made, it is pleasant to work with it.
Enlightenment of the front lens MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135:
Enlightenment of the rear lens and the look of a chic 12-blade aperture lens:
This is what a lens with a native metal hood installed looks like:
At one time, the MS version of the lens cost a lot of money. For example, the version without MS was several times cheaper, you can see for yourself... There is also the 'Olympic' version of the Jupiter-37A lens, it is no different from the usual Jupiter-37A except for the original olympic case and production around 1980. I would not bother looking for either the 'Olympic' or 'MC' versions of the lens, but would take the first successful copy of any of the Jupiter-37A.
The difference between MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135 and Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135
The MC version is marked in red, white and yellow. In the 'Not MC' version, all markings are in white. This is clearly visible in the photo below. Although there are variants of lenses with slightly different designations than the one shown below:
The difference is enlightenment. The 'non-MC' version has a lilac (violet-bluish) enlightenment. The 'MC' version has a greenish enlightenment. This is clearly seen in the photo below:
Enlightenment of the rear lenses is also very different:
Another difference is that the 'MC version' hood cannot be installed backwards. The non-MC version can be installed backwards, making it easy to carry with you at all times. When back-mounted hood access to the focus ring is not lost, but in this position you cannot put the protective cap on the lens.
Sample photos on MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135
All photos taken on Nikon D700without processing. How to use interchangeable shank lenses on modern Nikon cameras read here, and on Canon here.
How to use with modern cameras?
'A' lenses with an interchangeable shank, such as the one in this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both DSLR and mirrorless), just select correct adapter. The replacement 'A' shank usually has an external M42 thread and an 'H' mount (similar to Nikon F). For use on modern cameras, the easiest way is to add the required adapter from M42 to the desired system or from Nikon F to the desired system to this shank.
Catalog modern brand lenses 'Zenitar' и 'Helios' can look at this link.

Conclusions
MS Jupiter-37AM 3,5 / 135 and Jupiter-37A 3,5 / 135 - excellent lenses. Both options are good. I recommend this lens to all interchangeable lens camera owners.

Unfortunately, I have not heard about Pentax adapters, try to google what you dig up.
The people who are in the subject about the m42 adapters - pentax answer
here is the first thing the search engine gave
http://www.m42-eos.ru/pentax/
I know this adapter, I'm interested in replacing the shank in Soviet type A lenses with pentax. It’s just that MS Jupiter 37A is already coming to me, I want to immediately replace the shank with a Pentax, I know what they did, I will put the M42-Pentax adapter for a while.
In Moscow, sells DCS at 800r, but I'm near Kiev, otake.
Thank you
Soviet Type A shanks are copied (but not completely) from the Tamron T2 Mount. They differ only in the presence of a core with a M42X0,75 thread (not to be confused with M42X1) in the latter, which can be easily removed and T2 turns into A. T2 shanks are made mainly by Chinese and much cheaper than in DCS, but with a removed core they can be thicker, and thinner than A shank, or they may come up, so buying such a shank is a lottery. I bought in Kiev a T2 shank manufactured by Samyang (Korea). More expensive than the Chinese, but cheaper than the DCS. I came up!
In the USSR, KP A / K was not released. It was believed that the M42 / K adapters manufactured by KMZ and LOMO would be enough.
Since the image quality is almost the same for both, the Yu-37A with conventional coating is preferable. The MC “floats” over time: on the surface of the lenses, especially the outer ones, increasing spots may appear due to the destruction of the multilayer by microcracks. The layers differ not only in refractive indices, but also in the coefficients of linear and volume expansion. Therefore, temperature fluctuations provoke the appearance of microcracks and the gradual shedding of the layers of the antireflection film.
It is doubtful that the MS is floating.
I received an MC lens from 86, three years later he was 30 - nothing floated.
You are lucky so far. Usually the spot is small. But in general, a single layer is stronger and where the inner blackening of the frame affects light scattering more than enlightenment, it is preferable. These are, as a rule, 4-lens lenses, in particular, Industar-50-2 and Jupiter-37A. Both have rims inside and the aperture blades are completely black, and the chamfers of the lenses are not visible either.
I got the Yu-37A without MS, but with Olympic symbols. 80 years of release. There is some kind of enlightenment. On the outer circumference of the main lens 2 mm thick there is a lilac coating. For the rest of the lens area it is some kind of dark orange.
Do not be embarrassed! You have a Yu-37A with normal enlightenment.
I am very glad that I came across your site. I read reviews, comments for a long time and finally acquired lenses Jupiter-37a 82g. and zenitar-m 81g. with pixco m42-eos adapter. I can’t wait when I try. Many thanks to Arkady. Oh yes, it’s very nice to see a quality mark on the lens. NASTALGIA.
I have a jupiter 37a with ms enlightenment. The question is… there was dust on the front lens (the side that is screwed to the camera). I decided to shake it off with a brush .. but when I shook off a speck of dust, I regretted it. Dots from each villi remained on the enlightenment. How critical is this? and in general, who can say why there was such a “soft” enlightenment?
Hello Arkady, please tell me what is this letter “R” on the depth of field scale?
Please reread at least the comments on this article, there is an answer
I have a version without MS, but the designations are made in red, white, yellow and green.
I got Jupiter-37A MS-N-30. Can you tell me what the N-30 means?
Good day ! I thought about buying it for a long time, but I got Nikkor Nipon Kogaku 135 / 3,5 AI. Tell me whether it will differ in the drawing from Jupiter, just looking for its review but never found it ((. I would be grateful for the help.
Good day! Recently I became the owner of the Yu-37A version of MS 8362195. But for some reason, his enlightenment is not green, as in your review, but orange-lilac, like the usual version without MS. Is this even possible or the seller, under the guise of MS, sold the regular version? And in your reviews on these lenses there is not a word about HA. HA are visible on my lens, so I wanted to clarify if this is considered normal, or was I unlucky with the specimen?

Since MS is written on the lens, then it means with multi enlightenment, apparently enlightenment is different.
A plastic nut from the MS was screwed onto a non-MS lens. Deceived.
What kind of plastic nut are you talking about if the lens is metal?
Hello, maybe he understood and the front lens was replaced ...
Say, what about * Act on Nikon 5100?
Today I got the MC… .AM with the number 933393, at least for the exhibition))). Smoked to madness, you see someone thoroughly demolished nature. On the shank I found two risks from the file, for what purpose they were made and did not understand. The lenses are good, there is practically no dust, a copy of a non-MC has much more of it (fine-grained, visible only in the light, on a lamp). Arkady, why, what is in front, what is behind, at different angles of view, a different color reflection, then green, then purple? Shouldn't he be? one?
Hello Arkady, please help me with your choice, D3200 carcass, there are 18-55, 55-200 and 50mm / 1.8G whale lenses, is it worth buying another Jupiter 37 A lens?
PS I'm interested in the image quality at a low cost, in addition to training on working with manual lenses.
is
Good time of day!
Please tell me this, I was going to buy Jupiter 37a, what to look for to select a good specimen, nikon D7000 carcass
or advise another lens with great sharpness across the field, thanks in advance
do not tell me what is the difference between Jupiter MS 37A and Jupiter-37A MS-N-30
I got it literally three days ago in Kazan. New, greased. Even the instructions are included and the foam pads in the case, although they began to crumble, are relatives. 91 years of release. MC version. The hood is metallic. But the aperture blades are not shiny - they are blackened. I am surprised.
Yesterday I bought a KP-A / N adapter for it and finally hung it on my D7100. What can I say ... I'm shocked. The lens delivers an incredible image quality! 24 megapixels allows joking. Color, micro-contrast, everything is so great! This is comparable to the 135th L-ka of the canon. Awesome lens !! I don’t know how it’s not the MC version, but the MC is great. I seem to have fallen in love. It's a pity, the corner is very narrow on the crop. At FF he is just a godsend.
By the way, in bright backlight on an open aperture, catching a source of bright light in the viewfinder, concentric circles are visible, something like standing waves from a stone thrown into the water. I read somewhere that this indicates the presence of a special lens element in the lens structure?
DimDimych, how much did you buy? I am with you from the same city, trying to understand the adequate price for this lens.
usually put about two thousand, two hundred as an option.
From bounties - can be found for one and a half, any greedy - up to 3,5.
2 weeks ago I bought for $ 75 a complete set (case, hood, rear and front covers) + KP-A / N. All in ex. condition, I think that lucky :).
On Avito - 4000 ... Nearby zeiss jena sonnar 135 3.5 for the same amount - little used. Why did Jupiter surrender then, IMHO.
Well, what is it better? there are only 6 blades in the diaphragm. the optical scheme is the same, as simple as you like at home - from 4 lenses. those. at least because of the zeiss diaphragm on the covered hole, it will have nuts on bright points in the bokeh area. which means that constructively he is already inferior. Moreover, try to find for it the necessary adapters for your camera, so that you can focus on infinity. zeiss may have a slightly more contrasting picture in the backlight due to the used glass and coating, but this is just an assumption.
Ruslan, you are a necroposter. If, as you say, you can't compare it live, google it and compare it. Dmitry Evtifeev has a comparison on his website. And with regard to adapters - what to look for then? Everything fits perfectly on my Boots and Sonya, because m42. Not everyone is filmed only on Nikon.
Unlike you, I trust my eyes, otherwise you found a comparison, but did not draw any conclusions. the majority of those who voted for the quality of the picture in the comparison you gave preferred the Jupiter rather than the zonar because of the nuts in the bokeh.
Unlike “you,” I trust my eyes and common sense more, so having scored both, I bought 135 / 2L from my hands almost two years ago (I don’t boast).
The question with 135mm was completely closed for me, I did not mind spending it.
In the sense of the price today, it is completely inadequate.
I bought an adapter T2 for ebay, which is like an analogue of the kp / a-n - no infinity. bullshit. now looking for a native shank
Does anyone know anything about the n-30 version ???
