Review Makinon 80-200 4.0

This is an old manual focus lens, interesting for its constant aperture F / 4 across the entire focal length range. Makinon 80-200 / 4.0 belongs to tele-zoom lenses, the zoom factor is 2.5x. My copy has an M42 landing thread.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

There is only one zoom and focus ring on the lens. This type of lens is called single-ring. Also, the zooming method is built on the piston method - to change the focal length of the lens, you need to pull or push the piston away from you or towards you. I like the old manual single-ring lenses, as they allow one ring to effortlessly control both zoom and focusing. When zooming, the lens does not change its size, that is, it has an internal zoom.

Lens Indicators Makinon 80-200 / 4.0

Lens Indicators Makinon 80-200 / 4.0

The focusing of the lens is very smooth. The focus-zoom ring is rubberized, very comfortable. The focus ring rotates almost 360 degrees, while the lens trunk is slightly lengthened. The closest focusing distance is 1.3 meters, which allows you to shoot macro at 200mm focal length with 1: 5 magnification. In fact, the inscription 'Macro' on the lens barrel is just for show. The lens has a focusing distance scale in meters and feet.

The 'Auto' designation refers to the ability to automatically control the iris. The aperture can be set to f / 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. The number of aperture blades is 6 pieces, they create a nut-like hole, as shown in the photo below.

The lens is made in Japan, well assembledwithout backlash. It looks very solid on the camera. Also, the lens has multi-brightening of the lenses, but in reality this does not really help him.

In general, the lens is interesting, but does not shine with image quality. On F / 4.0, strong aberration, low sharpness.

Everything is filmed on Canon 350D without processing. Due to the fact that the lens does not have manual aperture control, I took all the photos at F / 4.0.

Conclusions:

Auto Zoom Makinon-Serie E MC 1: 4.0 f = 80-200mm - can serve as a budget alternative to an 80-200 / 4 class lens. Very easy to use, but not the most pleasant image quality at f / 4.0. If someone has something to share when using such a lens, write in the comments.

Arkady, thanks for the reviews of the good old lenses (and of course, a special thank you to those who provide them). Is it possible to indicate a focus point (zone) in test photos (not only in this review) in order to somehow see where the sharpest place should be? I would like a review of the Nikkor 70-200mm f / 2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR and the Nikkor 70-200mm f / 2.8G ED VR II (if possible of course), or at least in a few words about their special functions (difference). Thanks!

I can't put a full stop, I work without a dandelion. If someone gives 70-200 for a review, I will write, but according to reviews, I do not want to crush water in a mortar.

      • Denis

But there are not so many reviews on the net, they just clearly show the idea of photographing portraits with such a lens (Nikkor 70-200) and the excellent performance of this lens on a crop for “non-interference” reporting (weddings, etc.). I haven’t covered the long focal length, and I really like the pictures from Nikkor 70-200, especially in the attractiveness of the perspective.

  • Roman

I can give a zeiss planar 1,7 lens for a test. Only Nikon will not have infinity with him

Send, we can protest on kenon)

Do you manage until April 18th? Or then in early May.
    Details can be soap

I have AUTO MAKINON ZOOM 1: 3.5 f = 80-200mm multi-coated macro, which is not of such a design as to get an acceptable shot larger than 5.6; it is better not to open the aperture by 3.5; it is not very sharp, it’s still heavy, the shutter speed is shorter. If you wish, you can get a hold of it. There is CANON ZOOM LENS EF 55-200 4-5.6 II USM, with MAKINON the picture in my opinion is softer and more pleasant for CANON, it will be more wooden, but it naturally loses in terms of convenience and speed.

Good day! Tell me, is the bayonet fit for the Nikon D3100 ???

    • Danila

After all, the review says that it is this lens that is installed through the adapter)

  • Artem

Recently purchased a tokura 70-210 / 4-5.6 lens. I can not find information or reviews on it anywhere. The quality of the pictures is not bad, but still I would like to know what kind of glass it is ... Maybe someone knows?

  • anonym

On the D3100, it fits through the adapter-m42-nikon F. 300-400r.

    • Arthur

For Nikon there is a Makinon 70-210 f4.0 MC with the corresponding bayonet mount F. It is similar to that presented in the article with the exception of the diaphragm control system.

  • Jury

I was presented with a Minolta x-300s camera with just such a lens. I would like to know whether it is possible to change the mounts in order to use on Nikon and what is needed for this?

  • Alexander

There is the same, but with aperture 4.5 and under Pentax. I don’t need to buy one adapter for a mirrorless camera for the price of the lens itself; Who needs? Write to korvin1333@mail.ruI’ll send a photo. for 250 UAH selling, or exchange for something interesting on your part)
