Nikon D3200 review

For the opportunity Nikon D3200 body camera review Many thanks to Natriashvili George, who sent me a camera from another area to Kiev for writing this review.

Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 VR Micro on Nikon D3200

Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 VR Micro on the Nikon D3200 camera

Nikon D3200 is an excellent consumer DSLR camera from Nikon. Nikon D3200 was released in the summer of 2012 and is now quite popular among Nikon amateur cameras. Title 'Nikon D3200 body ' means that the camera in the box does not have a lens. Usually Nikon D3200 comes with a lens Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor. Such a lens is called 'whale', and the set itself is called Nikon D3200 kit. In this review, sample photos were not taken with a whale lens, but with Nikon 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S Nikkor.

Nikon D3200 boasts 24 MegaPixels on its CMOS matrix with crop factor 1.5X. Nikon D3200 camera can take pictures 6016 X 4000 pixels (24.064.000 pixels). Newer Model Nikon D5200 a slightly different matrix is used, with almost the same, but slightly fewer pixels. Among the cameras with a sprinkled matrix APS-C format Nikon DX, so far the Nikon D3200 has the largest number of pixels... By the way, the newer model is Nikon D3300 has a little less pixels :)

Users who like to crop pictures on a computer a lot should like the small functional Nikon D3200. A very interesting point is that if we build a full-frame matrix with the same pixel sizes as the Nikon D3200, we will get a 54MP camera. Similar thoughts came true with Nikon D7000 (16mp) -> Nikon D800 (36MP = 16MP * 2.25).

A huge number of megapixels Nikon D3200 requires special attention. A large number of pixels on the camera can sometimes play a trick. It concerns:

  • huge file sizes, especially when shooting in RAW format. Personally, I don’t particularly like the long copying of files to a computer and the resource consumption of batch processing of 'heavy' photos.
  • It is quite difficult to achieve the so-called 'pixel-by-pixel' sharpness with such a matrix, for this you need to use lenses with good resolution, that is, very sharp lenses. Sometimes closing the aperture to a certain value of the number F just helps. There are a lot of rumors about this, I can reassure you that it’s not worth worrying. Most likely in the comments to this review you will find many bright thoughts about manipulating sharpness.
  • a matrix with a large number of pixels has a lower diffraction threshold. This topic is quite complicated for the average amateur and deserves a separate article, who are interested, can be read here.
  • when using matrices with a huge number of pixels, you need to enter an additional coefficient for calculating excerpts. On the fingers, this can be explained in such a way that shorter values are required for handheld photography excerpts. When I worked with Nikon D3200, instead of my favorite excerpts in 1 \ 60 seconds for fifty lens, I had to use at least 1 \ 80 seconds to get a frame without stirring.

Personally, I need a camera with a large number of megapixels only for more flexible processing of photos on a computer, since with a large number of pixels you can pull out more useful data. But if processing is not needed, then I am quite pleased with the 6 megapixel Nikon D40... On the topic of pixels, I have another interesting article - Battle of Megapixels.

Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 VR Micro on the Nikon D3200 camera

Nikon D3200 can work with photosensitivity ISO 100 to 6400 units and expand your ISO range to Hi1, equivalent to ISO 12.800. I do not recommend shooting at ISO above 3200. Very interesting, but as for a cropped camera, the Nikon D3200 does a good job in low light. In my opinion, the noise level at high ISOs of the Nikon D3200 is comparable to such cameras as Nikon D5100 и D7000. One can safely say that the Nikon D3200 is one of the quietest cameras among other Nikon crop (at the beginning of 2013). Unlike older Nikon cameras, this model when operating in auto ISO can set the minimum shutter speed itself, exiting the parameters of the mounted lens.

Nikon D3200 uses for focusing 11 pointswhich the Nikon Multi-CAM 1000 focus sensor is responsible for working with. The exact same focusing system can be found on cameras. D200, D80, D90, D3000, D5000, D3100, D5100 и S5 pro. 11 focusing points are enough for uncomplicated amateur photography. The Nikon D3200 has the 'points' of focus that are visually visible in the viewfinder, not the 'areas' of focus, as on many other Nikon cameras. You can read more about focusing on Nikon cameras. here и here.

Measurement exposure implemented with 420 pixel RGB sensor. The same sensor can be found in many other Nikon hobby cameras. About froze exposure you can read on Nikon cameras here. In general, the Nikon D3200 normally copes with metering in difficult lighting conditions. exposure. But automatic white balance going crazy. I shot in a room with mixed light sources, white balance very often he lied, and shooting people under incandescent lamps was just horror - in the gallery below you will find one such photo. Due to the camera's huge dynamic range and vivid saturated colors, incorrect BB leads to the fact that the picture does not look the best.

Nikon D3200 - very compact SLR camera, one of Nikon's lightest CZK, weighing only 500 grams. The battery of the EN-EL14 camera holds a charge quite well. The same battery is used for cameras Nikon D3100, D5100, D5200.

Nikon D3200 uses a large 3-inch display at 920.00 points. The same display can be found in more advanced cameras, by type D3, D3s, D3x, D700, D300, D300s, D90, D7000 etc. Working with such a display is very convenient. Nikon D3200 display is better than that of Nikon D3100, which has the same 3 inches, but is divided into 230.000 points.

Example photo on Nikon D3200

Example photo on the Nikon D3200. Job BB in difficult conditions

Nikon D3200 can shoot at speed 4 frames per second. Nikon D3200 shows very good performance results, this is due to the use of the processor from Nikon D800. Performance rating from Radozhiva can be viewed here. At the same time, in the RAW mode, the buffer indicator shows 8 shots, but in fact the camera takes about one shot 12 RAW format shots and with disabled advanced features that enhance the image. In JPEG mode, the buffer shows 14 pictures, but the camera takes about 19 pictures in one series until it starts to slow down. If you enable additional settings to improve image quality, then in RAW format and in the JPEG formatter 7 pictures are available in one burst. These are pretty good results for an amateur camera.

Sample photo on Nikon D3200

Sample photo on Nikon D3200

I was very surprised that Nikon D3200 uses RAW files only with 12-bit color depth. For example, cameras D5100 и D5200 use RAW files with 14-bit color depth. RAW files average approximately 20-25MB each. Camera supports SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS-I) memory card, I used a 32GB SDHC memory card without any problems.

Nikon D3200 allows you to shoot video Full HD up to 1920 x 1080 pixels and up to 25 fps. In the 1280 by 720 mode, you can shoot video at up to 50 fps. Uses MOV format and H.264 codec, you can set the quality level to 'High' or 'Norm'. When shooting video, the built-in monaural microphone. You can use manual or automatic adjustment of the microphone sensitivity, and you can also turn off the microphone altogether.

The camera has an additional stereo microphone jack, Nikon recommends using the native ME-1 microphone. The camera can use continuous tracking focus AF-F for shooting video. AF-F focus mode must be set using the 'I' button while Live View is on. The accuracy and focusing speed in the video shooting mode is not fast; the focusing model is very strongly affected by the lens model used on the camera. The camera can be connected to the TV using a Type C HDMI mini cable.

In the camera menu, you can activate the 'Manual video setting' item. When this function is enabled, in manual mode of camera control 'M', manual shooting video available excerpts and ISO. Exposure can be set from 1 \ 30 to 1 \ 4000 seconds. When shooting video, you can immediately change the ISO value using the FN button if you set the FN button to control ISO sensitivity. It is convenient to shoot video in manual mode and with the included auto ISO function.

In P, A, S modes, you can shoot video and make corrections exposure for video using '+ \ -' button. In other scene modes, the correction exposure not available. Attention: during video recording, you cannot change the aperture value on which the video will be recorded, therefore, you need to set the F value before pressing the video recording button.

Example photo on Nikon D3200

Example photo on Nikon D3200

Attention: The Nikon D3200 does not have a built-in focus motor, so be careful when choosing lenses for the Nikon D3200. Nikon D3200 fits all lenses with the designation DX, as well as any lenses with the designation AF-S, AF-I, or with any another designation, which indicates the presence of a focusing motor built into the lens. This disadvantage of the Nikon D3200 may slightly affect the cost of purchasing additional lenses. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with this, since all modern lenses have a built-in focusing motor.

All the photos in the gallery below were taken on the Nikon D3200. All photos without treatment... RAW -> JPEG Q80%. Reduced size to 1600 * 1200 and printed data from EXIF.

RAW source files ('.NEF') can be download from this link (28 files, 350 MB).

Nikon D3200 has a bunch of useful features:

  1. Function face priority focusing Live View - quickly helps you focus on people's faces.
  2. Function matrix cleaning. I recommend setting this function to clear the matrix when the camera is turned off.
  3. Guide Mode to quickly familiarize yourself with the camera and quickly learn the basic settings. By the way, in this mode there is a mode of softening the background area, which allows you to take pictures with blurry background, the camera recommends using lenses no shorter than 80mm.
  4. Tips & Tricks when working with the camera. A nice little thing for beginners. To see the prompt, you need to click on the button with the image of the question mark.
  5. Scene Recognition System, for people who need effortless results in the photo.
  6. Active D-lighting and noise reduction function at high ISO. You can read more about these functions. here.
  7. Picture Control with 'Standard', 'Neutral', 'Vivid', 'Monochrome', 'Portrait', 'Landscape' modes. I love that you can customize the Picture Control for color and taste. For this review I used the Vivid mode with a sharpness level of 7-9.
  8. Possibility remote controlfor example using a cheap remote control ML-L3. By the way, the camera has two infrared receivers of the remote control signal, one is located behind the camera, the other in front. This arrangement of receivers is very convenient to use.
  9. The ability to connect an additional wi-fi module WU-1 for instant transfer of photos / videos to a computer or other compatible devices. Not included in delivery.
  10. Quiet mirror operation.
  11. Electronic rangefindersorry range finder does not work with old class optics AI-S.
  12. The built-in flash can operate at shutter speeds up to 1 \ 200 second. The flash guide number in manual flash control is 13 meters. Nikon D3200 does not support FP mode works with flash and does not support creative lighting system Nikon CLS.
  13. Auto release function. The self-timer can be set to a series of 9 shots. It is convenient to take self-portraits, especially with a group of people.
  14. automatic adjustment distortions.
  15. An additional button has appeared on the Nikon D3200 body, which is responsible for the shooting mode - you can select burst, single-frame shooting, self-timer and release with a delay
  16. the D3200 has a rubberized insert on the body under the thumb of the right hand, as well as the camera grip-holder is also rubberized. Black rubber is clearly visible on the red camera housing shown in the photo below.
  17. You can buy a camera in a red case :)

Personal experience:

In this cell, I found fault with the following:

  • Pentazor-based viewfinder with 95% frame coverage
  • UC-E17 Series Custom USB Cable
  • the Fn function button is programmable for only 4 functions: quality / image size, ISO sensitivity, white balanceactive D-lighting. I configure this button to control ISO.
  • Active D-lighting It can be either turned on or off and has no gradations. And here is the passive D-lighting in post-processing it already has 3 gradations: normal, moderate, enhanced.
  • When the battery is depleted, the camera blocks the shutter, but you can still dig into the menu for a long time and watch the shot material. This annoys me very much, the camera works but does not take pictures.
  • the 'noise reduction' function is not divided, but immediately includes noise reduction in pictures taken with high sensitivity, and noise reduction in pictures taken at long excerpts. Also, this function does not have any gradation of noise reduction, but can be either turned on or off. On other cameras, you can set the noise reduction level
  • in RAW + JPEG mode, only 12-bit RAW and only JPEG with high image quality are available
  • it is not clear which lenses will work with the 'Aut. distortion control '. The menu states that these must be CPU lenses with distortion control support.
  • the ISO step does not change and is 1 step, which means that you cannot manually select the ISO with values of 125, 500, 2500, etc. Only ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, Hi1 can be used.
  • you cannot control the aperture value while shooting a video, most likely this is due to mechanical limitations and the aperture control method itself, which use Nikon cameras.
  • you cannot immediately start recording video by pressing the 'rec' button. Be sure to turn on Live View, and then press the 'rec' button.
  • lack of additional features that are in more advanced cameras, such as Nikon D7000. These functions include bracketing, multiple exposure, HDR, etc.

In general, I really liked the small and remote Nikon D3200. It would not hurt to improve the operation of the automatic BB. I even thought if I could change my old woman Nikon D40 on the Nikon D3200. After Nikon D40 Pictures taken with the Nikon D3200 appear very vibrant and juicy.

  • Anatoly

Here all the reviews are excellent and processional.
There is no water at all - everything is on business.

Until today, I thought that the D5200 and D3200 have the same matrix ...

    Thank you

  • Igor

but for me it’s better http://nikon.technoportal.ua/photos/nikon-d3100-18-55vr-kit.html No, and the price is adequate! He’s my second, quite happy. I will not change soon, because It is quite modern.

  • anonym

Reduce the number of mp. up to 13 mp in the f-that menu and everything will be ok - “soap” from “micro-grease” will disappear!

  • Yuliya

Hello, tell me please, now there is Nikon d 3200, is it worth changing to d90 with a motor? reason: buying 50 mm 1,8 price with autofocus about 5000 UAH, without autofocus 2100 UAH, thanks in advance

    • Arkady Shapoval

better take a lens more expensive, it's worth it.

      • Yuliya

those. Nikon 50 mm f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor and Nikon 50 mm f / 1.8G AF Nikkor without autofocus differ in quality? or do you mean what kind of lens is more expensive?

        • Arkady Shapoval

no, there is either 1.8D AF or 1.8G AF-S, here the latter is better than 1.8D AF, take it.

  • Yuliya

Really? I didn’t know, thank you very much, what would I do without your site, the technique is not described and accessible anywhere like you

  • Yuliya

can I ask you another question? on d3200 which is better? 35 mm or 50 mm lens? I read that often there is an incompatibility of such a carcass and these lenses (incorrect focusing) is this true? and what they’re doing to ridicule such situations

    • Arkady Shapoval

Lenses for different tasks. With 35tkoy it will be easier and more convenient. All that AF-S has in its name should work correctly on the d3200.

  • Dmitry

“The lack of additional features found in more advanced cameras like the Nikon D7000. These features include bracketing, multiple exposure, HDR, etc. ”

There is no HDR in the Nikon D7000, only in the D5100.

  • Leo

Good afternoon, dear fans! Someone can tell or poke your nose how to correctly or correctly configure picture control on the d3200 camera. I have not found a clear answer anywhere on this topic.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Customizable to your liking, there is no “right” setting.

      • anonym

Thanks. I understand that if you shoot in raw, then these settings do not affect the resulting picture?

        • BB

Yes, “picture control” settings only affect “in-camera” Jpeg

          • Arkady Shapoval

This is a misconception. Picture Control settings affect the display and processing of photos with native converters - Picture VivewNX / NX-I, Capture NX / NX-D.

  • Leo

That is, if I do not use my native software instead, I do easy processing in camera raw, then there should be no difference? Thanks to everyone who answers.

  • Alexey

    No difference

  • Alexey

Shot on a d3200 with a whale lens without additional lighting and reflectors. Lr processing

    • Nicholas

      Beautiful!

    • Sasha

Are you having a wedding at 3200?

  • Leo

Thanks to all who responded. I will learn to shoot, work and process.

  • Leo

I apologize for the offtopic, no one will tell you the site or the lessons on photography and processing. If possible by mail leoenergy87@gmail.com. I just got a camera and I won’t get this blog, I’ve read about the lenses and have already bought myself a pair. Thanks again to everyone.

    • BB

Instead of "photography lessons" read articles about photography, here, on Radozhiv, and a lot of questions will become clear :-)
And then there are "photo tricks" - do not forget to look there too.

Well, in terms of processing - there is just a sea of information on the Internet - for any level - from beginner to professional - both ordinary instruction sites and video tutorials

  • Dima

    Good afternoon!

Question to experts d3200. Why is the ISO 125/320/560 value shown here? I have no such values in my d3200, only 100/200/400/800/1600/3200/6400 and Hi 1.

    Thank you!

    • Jury

Dima, the values are obtained when the auto ISO is turned on

      • Dima

        Yuri, thank you!

    • Yarkiya

Perhaps this is so on younger carcasses, on older ones any value is set both automatically and manually.

      • Lynx

        Yeah, especially 560.

        • Jury

560 is possible if step 1/2 is selected.

  • banana

Good afternoon! There is a Nikon d3200 arsenal, often there is a need to shoot a large number of people in small rooms (office). I consider options for wide-angle lenses: Tamron SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f / 4G ED VR, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18–35mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED, Nikon 1 NIKKOR VR 6.7–13mm f / 3.5–5.6 / Whoever dealt with them, can you advise something, a beginner in this matter. Thanks in advance

    • Oleg

Banana, you should see something wider. Tokina has good and relatively inexpensive widths, the same 12-24 or 12-28. There are reviews on Radozhivka.

      • banana

Thanks for the tip. For Tokins 12-24 + d3200, focusing only works in manual mode. What about Tokina AT-X 11-20mm F2.8 PRO DX?

        • Arkady Shapoval

There are two versions of Tokina 12-24 - DX and DX II, the second autofocus will work even on the d3200.

          • banana

Arkady, thanks. If you compare Tokina 12-24 and Tokina AT-X 11-20mm, which is better? The organization pays, so there is no particular price limit.

            • Arkady Shapoval

I didn't use the 11-20, it's a fairly new lens, but considering that the 11-20 is an upgrade from the great 11-16, I think it makes sense to go with the 11-20.

  • banana

Does the lack of a stabilizer make the result worse? Shooting is mostly hand-held

    • Arkady Shapoval

I advise you to first understand a little bit in general in photographic equipment. You ask questions that require a large canvas of text to answer.

      • banana

I sit, I understand, of course, I’m just making a choice from above and don’t understand that it’s not to go to the store for bread)) I want the lens to cope with the task of shooting in small and dimly lit rooms. Thanks for the tips.

    • Pastor

If there is money for Tamron SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD, then maybe there is enough for a used d610 / d800? This set will be unrealistically cool. 15-30 according to many reviewers, optically no worse than Nikon 14-24 2.8, which for a long time was the best width of all mirror systems. So besides, the tamron also has a stabilizer, which helps a lot even at wide angles. This is ideal. And so, you have already been advised by the d3200 many good shirikov and all of them will suit your tasks. For rooms, most often even 2.8 is not a salvation, so, as they say, it would be nice to take a puff-sat-700 or some yungnuo with TTL. In addition to the recommended glasses, I will call sigma 10-20 4-5.6. I had such a canon and there is a Nikon. It is quite suitable for your tasks, if there is not enough 18mm on the whale. But remember that not everyone likes photographs of people in full swing. And certainly it is necessary to place people with great care at the edges of the frame.

  • Artem

Banan, first tell me how you are shooting now: on which lens, with or without flash, at which ISO values and what does not suit you. When shooting people on a wide-angle lens, a stabilizer is not needed, because at long exposures that he can give people will still be lubricated. The stabilizer is needed for shooting static scenes, and people move.
The best option is to shoot on a high-quality wide-angle type Nikon 10-24, Nikon 12-24, Tokina 11-16 II, Tokina 11-20, Tokina 12-24 II, Tokina 12-28. Plus, an external flash such as Nikon SB 700. Cover the aperture to f4-f5,6, direct the external flash to the ceiling / wall and get a high-quality result.
If you plan to shoot without a flash, then it is advisable to use aperture Tokina on the f2,8 aperture, but you will need to monitor the depth of field.
In general, I am for Tokina 11-20 / 2,8 + SB 700, the optimal set for crop, for your tasks, today. But in any case, you will need to study the technical aspect of the process, because judging by the lenses you originally considered, you still do not quite understand what is what.

    • banana

Artem, thank you very much for such a detailed answer. Indeed, I am new to this business. My colleague and I fell under the responsibility for the photo, sometimes you need to photograph from 30 or more people in an insufficiently large room, we also photograph people in motion while moving around the building, you need to photograph the building (3 floors), the panorama of the room, etc. The illumination is not very, therefore, the sb-700 flash was once bought for a long time, we have not yet had time to figure it out completely, so we rarely use it. We are shooting now at 18-55, and we are thinking whether the wide-angle lens will help us to simplify the work and whether there is any sense in buying.

  • Sergei

Help the newcomer with the choice, please.
I take the first Nikon D3200 SLR for me with the Nikkor 18-105mm (used on hand, mileage about 8000).
An important job for him will be shooting electronic components, printed circuit boards, where you need to get the maximum resolution (there is no money for the D800A) from the area up to A4 format. Any light.
I understand that some kind of fix is needed, but which one?
An example of a shooting object in a file.

    Thank you in advance.

    • BB

For these tasks, 18-105 is enough (unless, of course, you plan to consider microbes) - just clamp the diaphragm to 7,1. Little light - either a higher ISO (up to 1600-2000), or a tripod, and the shutter speed is longer.

    • brighty

This fix will be just right.
      Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM

  • Sergei

    Thanks for the feedback.
Electronic microbes have to be examined regularly, the size of which is much smaller than booger flies. So far, I have the result on Nikon D3200 18-105mm, alas, but worse than on the Kodak C813 soap dish ((. It is too early to draw conclusions on the technique, because in the soap dish I am a “soap pro”, in DSLRs a “mirror polish” with experience in one evening.))
It is already clear that it is impossible to focus the lens 18-105 closer than 45 cm, which, however, is written on it and the macro does not stretch from it.
Thank you very much for the Nikon DX AF-S Micro Nikkor 40mm 1: 2.8G SWM fix tip.
Particularly important is the labeling of the elements, for example, three digits on the 0604 SMD resistor. The MBS-9 microscope solves this problem easily, but very slowly and tiring.
Here are some pictures to compare the same fragment of the board (60 * 23).

    • Jury

Sergey, for photographing boards up to A4 size, the macro mode is not needed. only part of the board can be photographed in it. A macro lens will only be useful for its sharpness. On a full frame for photographing the board 200 * 100 mm (approximately), I used a 100mm lens, closed the aperture to 10, flash. I chose the distance so that the entire board would fit into the frame and nothing else. The board should be positioned perpendicular to the optical axis - at short focusing distances, the DOF is small, even at f10. At 100% magnification, all markings on 0805 cases are visible, on 0603 they will also be visible.

Please tell me, I have a nikon d3200. I want to sell it and buy a new one, but I don’t know which one. I wanted d7000, but since I am very poorly versed in technology, I do not understand - it has completely different prices, but the model is the same. I saw him for 13000 UAH (body), and below the same is much more. I beg you to suggest something. Thanks in advance.

      What does not suit d3200?

I would offer you a brand new D5, but then suddenly you don’t have enough for the lens.

You would at least say about the scope of the budget, otherwise Nikon has a large lineup.

Can I work with a 64 GB Nikon D3200 memory card?

Good afternoon, I ask for advice, I want to buy a D3100 or D3200, I also look at the d90, because there is excellent ergonomics and more opportunities, but the dimensions confuse me, because I will use not only me, but also my wife and mother.
Now there is a D60 Kit 18-55, it is mainly used at home - I rent a child 1,5 years old and all sorts of family holidays like NG and DR, sometimes I also take it for picnics and walks.
In the near future it is planned to buy a fix with a 35mm 1.8 motor, most likely it will be used most of the time as the main one.
I want to change the camera, because Often there are problems with autofocus, sometimes it stops focusing and until you take it off, and then you don’t put the lens back on, it doesn’t stick. And in general, you often have to focus several times to catch the desired point, before I did not observe such a thing. The d3100 / d3200 is confused by multiple reviews of poor BB and incorrect exposure (pictures are overexposed), in addition, many reviews of failures in working with memory cards.
Advise whether it is worth changing the d60 at all, in general, it suits me in the quality of the picture, but the trouble with autofocus worries.

I am not a professional photographer but an amateur. I can’t say much or some subtleties, but for about half a year I had the experience of using the d3200 I found a mileage of about 7000 due to problems with memory cards, but I didn’t have any problems with the bb or the exposition, here is the album vk.com/album2945771_217208241 everything is shot on d3200 and more part of the Soviet optics. Judge for yourself. I have no complaints about work more often than not.
