Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED review

Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED review

The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1:2.8D is a professional fast telephoto zoom lens for Nikon full-frame cameras. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has a gold ring near the front lens - a sign of high quality for Nikon lenses. Of course, the lens is made in Japan. When using the lens on Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 120-300mm.

The Nikon ED AF-S version of the Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D is sometimes called the Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 MK IVsince this is the fourth Nikon autofocus lens of the 80-200 / 2.8 class.

A complete and accurate list of all Nikkon Nikkor class 70(80)-(180)200/2.8 autofocus professional lenses:

It is said that no more than 73.000 copies were produced. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D was replaced in 2003 by the 70-200mm f / 2.8G AF-S ED-IF VR. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D is the first lens in the 80-200 \ 2.8 class with a built-in focus motor (AF-S SWM). Some believe that this model was not fully developed and has a number of problems, therefore it was stopped to be produced, but the older, successful model Nikon 80-200mm f / 2.8D ED AF Nikkor (MKIII) released so far. NHHC made a terrible review about this lens (you can see here) Personally, I did not find any flaws in my copy, or any serious flaws in the image quality.

The lens was produced from December 1998 to 2003, it can be found in two versions - black (black) and white or gray (grey) This review presents just a rare gray version of Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D. The gray and black versions of the lenses differ only in body color, optically and mechanically they are completely identical, although it is rumored that the gray versions are better.

The optical scheme includes 18 elements in 14 groups, and this is the first new optical scheme in the lenses of the 80-200 \ 2.8 line, before that all MKI, MKII, MKIII versions had the same optical scheme with 16 elements in 11 groups. Also, the optical design of the monster Nikkor AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED includes as much 5 ED glasses.

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has a very convenient focus ring. On the lens near the front lens is distance scale focusing with a mark for 80mm infrared shift. The ring in manual focus mode rotates approximately 120 degrees from infinity to 1.5 meters. There is a focus mode switch on the lens, two modes are available 'M / A' and 'M'. You can read more about M / A mode here. You can also find on the lens focus stop... The limiter can be in the 'Full' and 'infinity-2.5m' positions. In the first mode, the lens focuses from infinity to MDF, and in the second mode, from infinity to 2.5 meters.

Please note that with manual focusing, the limiter does not work, manually you can always focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. Also, there is an area with three special buttons between the focus ring and the zoom ring. Buttons lock automatic focus when you click on any of them, sometimes it is very convenient to use instead of a button 'AF-L / AE-L'located on the camera body.

Auto focus is fast at any limiter position. At 80mm focal length, the lens focuses a little faster than at 200mm focal length. Auto focus is quite quiet. It is very nice that the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has internal focus and internal zoom. When focusing and when zooming, the lens in general does not change its size, also, when focusing and zooming, the rear lens remains stationary. Auto focus with this lens will work on all the central control rooms Nikon.

The lens has a tripod socket, tripod foot socket (collar) can be removed. The lens uses 'professional' diameter filters at 77mm... In general, the lens is very heavy, Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D weighs 1440 grams without a tripod socket.

Included with the lens is a huge awesome Hood HB-17. The hood can be worn backwards, and access to the focusing ring will be lost, and it will be difficult to zoom. Also included is a very pretty case CL-73 to transport the lens.

Important: the lens has an aperture control ring. In order for the lens to start working normally on modern CZKs, you need to set the f / 22 value on the lens and snap a special switch near the aperture control ring. After such a manipulation, it will be possible to control the diaphragm from the camera itself, in more detail in the section on Non-G type lens.

The diaphragm device itself has 9 rounded lobes.

Sample photos on Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (gray) and full frame

All photo without processing. All photos in the gallery below were taken with a lens Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (gray, MK4) and cameras Nikon D700, RAW, NL snapshot management mode, converted to JPEG using VinewNX 2 with automatic detection BB (Calculate Automaticaly), reduced size to 3MP and imprinted data from EXIF.

My experience of using:

As far as I know, the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has no dust or moisture protection. In general, this is a very high quality lens. I liked it very much. Image quality is at a very high level, at least in the copy I got for this review. In general, when I prepared a 3MP photo for the site (reduced the size), the sharpness turned out to be just crazy. The gray version of the lens looks quite unusual on the camera, somewhat reminiscent of the Canon L series lenses that I often see on my colleagues.

Conclusions:

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D - a gorgeous high-aperture telephoto zoom, perfect for reportage, wedding photography. Can serve as an excellent portrait lens. Has very fast autofocus and good image quality. I liked this model much more than its predecessor. Nikon ED 80-200mm f / 2.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII).

Hello. Why not review the Nikkor 70-200mm f / 2.8 lens? It seems like the main one for wedding shooting and is it really so scarce that you can’t test it?

Good evening! The torment of choice! For D700. 80-200 4 versions or 70-200 1 versions ??? Is there a big difference in the picture and which side is the advantage? Tell me please. Thanks in advance.

Hello Arkady. I’ve been renting a Nikon d5100 for a year now. The camera is gorgeous of course. In the class of amateur non-motorized, there are simply no equal. I shoot photoshoots on sigma 50 1.4. Photos are just a sight for sore eyes. Aperture 1.4 is quite working, if you adapt. I am interested in this question. Recently I bought a 80th version from a friend of my nikon af-s 200-2.8 f / 4 lens. The picture is fascinating, the bokeh is somehow fabulous. Very satisfied. But!!! A friend was shooting this lens on the nikon d600. I saw his photos, the sharpness at 2.8 was excellent. And for some reason I don’t have such sharpness on my aperture 5100 on my d2.8. And I just can’t understand why. Please tell me what is the reason

Hello, I need some advice from the pros. I have a D7000, I want to buy an 80-200 f / 2,8 lens for it (for shooting sports events). I understand they are different, tell me what is better for me to take, or maybe something else is better for this device ...
    thank you

  • he himself

80-200 on a crop d7000 will be 140-300mm, and aperture 2.8 is better than dark ones not expensive with aperture 3.5..5.6..6.3 but more authentic. And what to shoot?

Dear Arkady! The Nikon d2xs camera and the Nikon AF-S 80-200mm F / 2.8 IF ED lens with infrequent use, the lens whistles a little and then goes through with focusing, what could be the problem and what are the recommendations. Maybe you need to train them more often?

Hi, Arkady, the glass is gorgeous, I bought it on occasion for only $ 50, autofocus just doesn’t work, maybe you have statistics on the pilgrims of this device in advance

  • Vadim Ogolyar

I bought myself the other day.
Good lens, sharp at aperture of 2.8.
At least sharper than 24-70 2.8.
The picture pleased, the color rendition is excellent.
He squeaked the motor, handed it over to a familiar master, cleaned it from dust (as I understand it) and lubricated the engine, said that it would last another 10 years as a new one.
The black version. I bought for 900 cu no signs of use.
    Thanks for the review!)

A bomb ... I got myself a 24-70 / 2.8, I was happy as a traley bus ... I only took it off, but I took this one and realized that it was mine ... now (if space allows) I only use it. Saving up for 85 / 1.4 ...

Hello. I recently switched to full format, took the D750, and began to buy lenses one by one. Everything was fine until I purchased this particular 80-200 MK4 lens. In the beginning everything worked with a bang, the lens is simply gorgeous! Sharp, fast. But ... after a few hours the lens began to behave strangely, autofocus began to hang. It works, it stops. Sometimes you have to shoot from the camera and put it back in order to work. Sometimes it can just make money on its own, and then turn off again. Absolutely unpredictable behavior. At the same time, when it stops working, it emits a strange weak crackling in the baronet's area, similar to the crackling of a high-voltage line during wet weather and rain. I suffered for a long time and tried everything, nothing helped until I thought of wiping the contacts of the object with a zero, they say, maybe a new one and a bad contact ... and a miracle! Has earned! and worked flawlessly for about a week, until he left it with his father for a week and when he took it away, he stopped working altogether! does not even disappear, but simply does not work. I didn’t know what to do anymore, I twisted it, nothing until I thought of pressing and releasing the lens clamp button during a glitch, and it started working again, but only for a couple of seconds. Then again for the old .... I tried this lens on three other cameras, D800 and D80, everything works fine. Also tried my D750 with other lenses, no problem either. I went to the store where I bought a camera and tried the lens on another D750, the same story is buggy. What is the problem? can anyone advise?

    • Peter Sh.

You need to actively shoot with him a watch pat on another photo. Perhaps it overheats, closes somewhere.
Take another AF-S lens and use it on your new D750 as well.

    • Andrey Super

Man where is your brain? Sandpaper "rubbed" - maladtsa! From the above I can conclude that there is no contact in the connector, the contacts on the lens and on the camera are a connector! It was necessary to wipe it with alcohol, carefully. And now the coating on the contacts of the lens is damaged and plus there is an abrasive from the paper. For repair - to restore.
If rubbing hadn’t helped, you could still carefully, taking precautions, gently wipe the contacts with a soft student gum and naturally carefully remove the remaining gum!
By the way, it is possible that some of the contacts sink (they are spring-loaded) - it can be seen.

    • anonym

the same problem, with d750 it doesn’t plow .. how did you solve this problem?

    • zloy_helios

      Greetings!
Exactly the same symptoms with a lost focus on the motor 80-200.
Maybe 1-1,5 thousand shots work off with a bang and float the problem
It may not work immediately when turned on ...
I picked up d300, at the time of the problem on d750 - I put it on d300 and everything works. On the previous FF d700, this glass worked flawlessly.
The same crackle (area under the built-in flash) at the moment when focusing does not work ...
      I cleaned the contacts.
There is definitely a problem in this bundle.

  • Sergei

After reading your review received the latest confirmation for the purchase of Mk4, I think I will not be mistaken. I ordered in Japan, now I'm waiting.

    • Michael

Sergey, I would also like this, if not a secret, on which website did you place an order for this lens?

  • Andrey Super

Arkady, tell me, in connection with the weight of the lens and the length (lever), how safe is its operation on the Nikon D300 camera, can it accidentally turn out the lens mount?
Perhaps Nikon has some recommendations on the maximum weight of the lens for different cameras?

  • Novel
