Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED review

Nikon AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED review

The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1:2.8D is a professional fast telephoto zoom lens for Nikon full-frame cameras. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has a gold ring near the front lens - a sign of high quality for Nikon lenses. Of course, the lens is made in Japan. When using the lens on Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 120-300mm.

The Nikon ED AF-S version of the Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D is sometimes called the Nikon 80-200 / 2.8 MK IVsince this is the fourth Nikon autofocus lens of the 80-200 / 2.8 class.

A complete and accurate list of all Nikkon Nikkor class 70(80)-(180)200/2.8 autofocus professional lenses:

It is said that no more than 73.000 copies were produced. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D was replaced in 2003 by the 70-200mm f / 2.8G AF-S ED-IF VR. The Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D is the first lens in the 80-200 \ 2.8 class with a built-in focus motor (AF-S SWM). Some believe that this model was not fully developed and has a number of problems, therefore it was stopped to be produced, but the older, successful model Nikon 80-200mm f / 2.8D ED AF Nikkor (MKIII) released so far. NHHC made a terrible review about this lens (you can see here) Personally, I did not find any flaws in my copy, or any serious flaws in the image quality.

The lens was produced from December 1998 to 2003, it can be found in two versions - black (black) and white or gray (grey) This review presents just a rare gray version of Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D. The gray and black versions of the lenses differ only in body color, optically and mechanically they are completely identical, although it is rumored that the gray versions are better.

The optical scheme includes 18 elements in 14 groups, and this is the first new optical scheme in the lenses of the 80-200 \ 2.8 line, before that all MKI, MKII, MKIII versions had the same optical scheme with 16 elements in 11 groups. Also, the optical design of the monster Nikkor AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED includes as much 5 ED glasses.

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has a very convenient focus ring. On the lens near the front lens is distance scale focusing with a mark for 80mm infrared shift. The ring in manual focus mode rotates approximately 120 degrees from infinity to 1.5 meters. There is a focus mode switch on the lens, two modes are available 'M / A' and 'M'. You can read more about M / A mode here. You can also find on the lens focus stop... The limiter can be in the 'Full' and 'infinity-2.5m' positions. In the first mode, the lens focuses from infinity to MDF, and in the second mode, from infinity to 2.5 meters.

Please note that with manual focusing, the limiter does not work, manually you can always focus from infinity to 1.5 meters. Also, there is an area with three special buttons between the focus ring and the zoom ring. Buttons lock automatic focus when you click on any of them, sometimes it is very convenient to use instead of a button 'AF-L / AE-L'located on the camera body.

Auto focus is fast at any limiter position. At 80mm focal length, the lens focuses a little faster than at 200mm focal length. Auto focus is quite quiet. It is very nice that the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has internal focus and internal zoom. When focusing and when zooming, the lens in general does not change its size, also, when focusing and zooming, the rear lens remains stationary. Auto focus with this lens will work on all the central control rooms Nikon.

The lens has a tripod socket, tripod foot socket (collar) can be removed. The lens uses 'professional' diameter filters at 77mm... In general, the lens is very heavy, Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D weighs 1440 grams without a tripod socket.

Included with the lens is a huge awesome Hood HB-17. The hood can be worn backwards, and access to the focusing ring will be lost, and it will be difficult to zoom. Also included is a very pretty case CL-73 to transport the lens.

Important: the lens has an aperture control ring. In order for the lens to start working normally on modern CZKs, you need to set the f / 22 value on the lens and snap a special switch near the aperture control ring. After such a manipulation, it will be possible to control the diaphragm from the camera itself, in more detail in the section on Non-G type lens.

The diaphragm device itself has 9 rounded lobes.

All photo without processing. All photos in the gallery below were taken with a lens Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D (gray, MK4) and cameras Nikon D700, RAW, NL snapshot management mode, converted to JPEG using VinewNX 2 with automatic detection BB (Calculate Automaticaly), reduced size to 3MP and imprinted data from EXIF.

My experience of using:

As far as I know, the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D has no dust or moisture protection. In general, this is a very high quality lens. I liked it very much. Image quality is at a very high level, at least in the copy I got for this review. In general, when I prepared a 3MP photo for the site (reduced the size), the sharpness turned out to be just crazy. The gray version of the lens looks quite unusual on the camera, somewhat reminiscent of the Canon L series lenses that I often see on my colleagues.

Conclusions:

Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D - a gorgeous high-aperture telephoto zoom, perfect for reportage, wedding photography. Can serve as an excellent portrait lens. Has very fast autofocus and good image quality. I liked this model much more than its predecessor. Nikon ED 80-200mm f / 2.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII).

And can I shoot children's matinees with this lens? Yes, I have a D3200 !!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

For children's matinees, I would recommend something simpler. With the D3200, it will be inconvenient to work with such a colossus as this 80-200 / 2,8 due to the weight of the latter.

  • Vasil

    Garnі fotografії you viishli (:

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks. In processing, they generally look good.

Is it possible to revolt in obrobtsі? Dorechі in the winter competition problems with remaining photos.

      • Sergei

Arkady, you can ask what you do in the process of processing photos?
        contrast, tones
I am an amateur and I wonder how professionals process their photos, what tools and what points are important during processing - maybe you even have an article on your website ...

  • Yura Borovskiy

    Tse mriya!

  • Levani

In the photo with pigeons on the wire, a faint vignette is visible)

  • Oleg

yes… ..the pictures on the monitor are just razor-sharp and the color is great… it would be interesting to see them in real size and raw. good infection ... ... but your price tag ON IT IS NOT HUMANE. Interestingly, on my Nikon D600 the pictures came out worse than on the D700?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the review - originals, only 3MP size. Would have come out no worse.

  • Gene jb

Very interesting photos. Strange ones. And color and contrast and sharpness. It's like another level. Much higher. But the color is somehow pressed down or something….

  • Oleg

photo with kissing pigeons of course good no doubt. … .But how to correctly say “small”. Doesn’t finish 200 focal… .that if 300 or nikon 800 with its 36 million would be super.

  • Denis

Once again I am convinced that Nikon trademarks (though not all) give sharpness no worse than fixes. Not far away is the day (if it has not already arrived) when zooms will be equally demanded with fixes.

Is there a list / table on the net which Nikon lenses have dust and moisture protection?

In the review - originals, only 3MP size. Would have come out no worse. - so wrote the owner of the site ... ... ... I can not understand ... where is there 3 megapixels? there are small photos of 240 kilobytes

  • Oleg

have a question for you Arkady. if you are a professional photographer, then the photo should be sold. where and how can I buy a photo from your photo (for further broadband printing - from A0 And more ...) ..?

  • Oleg

There is an opinion that autofocus does not work very well on the crop ... .. who faced it?

    • Michael

Works great on crop (D7000). But on the D750 is not detected.

      • Alexey

Autofocus refused to work on the D7100 :( But the glass is interesting!

  • Andrei

I found myself such a gun, only black, I will gladly take it…. or all the same MK3 ??? Hopefully on the crop, she also does not show herself badly .... Arkady thanks for the review and excellent shots, I was sharply pleased.

    • Oleg

Andrew. I was told by a photographer that his d7000 has a problem with this autofocus lens! but on d 700 it is not! I also found this black ... .. and how much for your asking?

  • Oleg

by the way, I saw full-size photos from this lens ... the sharpness is simply amazing :)

  • Semen

Arkady. Tell me which manual or other more budget-friendly lenses can give a picture of this quality. Please read the list if it’s not difficult for you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a laborious task. Due to the fact that this is a zoom, at 80 and at 200, he himself gives a different picture.

  • Semen

Arkady! The pictures are simply stunned, especially with a girl! I didn’t just ask ... I myself cannot afford to buy a lens of such a price level, so I am wondering if it is possible to take a photo of this quality with any other, cheaper lenses. Well, let's say fixes ... And what? Pliz!

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are a lot of fixes, you need to look at the body range like 135 2.0, 105 2.0, 180 2.8 (relatively cheap), 200 2.0, etc.

      • Paul

Arkady, thank you so much for your work!
I ask for advice from you ...
There are lenses on the Nikon D800:
        - 50mm 1,8
        - 24-105mm 3,5-4,5
        - 70-300mm VR
I’m renting weddings, I want to expand opportunities in the aperture, as you think, is it better to buy 14-24mm wide assortments or buy 70-200 2,8-XNUMXmm for better productions?
        Please advise.

        • Arkady Shapoval

I would take 70-200 2.8 for a portrait and a production. And what kind of beast is 24-105? maybe 28-105?

  • Semen

Arkady, the tele range is not so important (let's say 200mm), the quality is important as the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 80-200mm 1: 2.8D. Name any lenses with such a picture, but cheaper if there are any!

    • Denis

Semyon, it is definitely difficult to answer your question. I myself asked myself such a search question. The fact is that if we distract from other third-party lens manufacturers, then there is a difference between the quality of different copies of the same lenses. So I came across a very successful copy of the 18-105 and not very 50mm fix (compared with analogs of those from colleagues). When buying, be sure to try out several lenses by choosing “your”. And be sure to take the camera and lens for adjustment to the service - almost all DSLRs require this.

      • Sergei

Only AF-S zooms are adjusted, screwdrivers are not subject to adjustment, therefore, the D-series will have to put up with the back or front focus, if one is not corrected by the carcass. Fixes are adjusted without problems.

    • Alexey

Take Nikon 70-300mm f / 4.5-5.6g ed-if af-s vr zoom-nikkor you will not regret. Sharpness and a picture on the open awesome. So what if it’s not 2.8, but it costs three times cheaper and the sea is better.

      • anonym

So after all, the work of autofocus on this lens is not always accurate. There are no complaints only in ideal lighting conditions. And if also in fast movement ...

  • Sasha

The question is where can I buy this miracle but in white?

  • Alinka

Hello, please tell me: how will the Nikkor AF-S 80-200mm f / 2.8 IF-ED on the D90 behave in reportage photography?

  • anonym

    for crop too good

  • Ivan

Arkady, do you always have the maximum sharpness setting in the camera? There is a gray lens, which is not very sharp. I looked at your settings, set it the same way (added sharpness to 9 ... stood at 2) ... better ... but you get much sharper.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

    Good day!
please help to make a choice. I want a high-quality professional televik. I thought of taking a nikkor 70-200 f / 2.8 vr2 ($ 2000-2400). then I came across reviews of this lens ($ 900-1100). many people write that this lens will be better than the first version of 70-200 vr in terms of picture and sharpness. some say that both 70-200 have less artistic pictures, more dry, although the vr2 is a little sharper. now I am tormented by the choice - to take a new 70-200 vr2 or 80-200 af-s from my hands, and buy 17-35 2.8 for the difference. Tell me please.

    • Sergei

Opinion is drier pictures, or less artistic, as for me is purely subjective. We must try at least 2 lenses, in order to at least roughly understand what a particular model means (some lenses may differ individually - to wash or, on the contrary, behave very well compared to the majority ) I would advise you to shoot with each lens - the time and even the rent is worth it, so that later you don't have to change your mind and sell.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I forgot to add that the stabilizer does not matter to me. interested in the quality and artistry of pictures, sharpness, color reproduction. the lens is needed mainly for portraits.

    Thank you in advance.

  • Alexandra

Hello, please tell me, is it worth taking this lens for Nikon D3100 and is it suitable at all? or maybe something better can be picked up?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it does. Better to take 70-200 / 2,8 VRII :)

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, and on my question do not tell me?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Must decide for yourself.

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, tell me your personal opinion about the photos taken with the af-s 80-200, af-d 80-200 and 70-200 vr II, dropping the weight, stabilizers, noise and focus speed. I'm interested in sharpness, color reproduction, artistry.
I plan to use in conjunction with the D600.
I don’t have the opportunity to compare these lenses live, so I ask your subjective opinion based on your experience.

        Thanks in advance,
