This review presents old version of Nikon E 2.8 / 28.

The Nikon E Series lenses are very light. In their name, the Nikon E series lenses do not have Nikkor prefixes. Lens series e are also AI-S lenses. Nikon E 2.8 / 28 weighs only 150 grams, the optical design consists of 5 elements in 5 groups with NIC coating, the diameter of the front filter is 52mm. The number of diaphragm blades is 7, the blades are not rounded.

How to use such lenses on modern cameras can be found in my article about AI-S. I used Nikon E 2.8 / 28 on cameras without any problems Nikon D700, D40.

The focusing of the lens is smooth, the focusing ring can be rotated 90 degrees. MDF is 30 centimeters. The focusing ring is rubberized. When focusing, the front lens does not rotate, the 'trunk' of the lens is lengthened by half a centimeter. Using the aperture ring, you can set F / 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. DOF is indicated for F / 11, F / 22. The lens has a focusing distance scale. In general, focusing and controlling aperture is pretty straightforward.

Sample photos on Nikon E 2.8 / 28

All photos without processing. VI image management mode, converted to JPEG using VinewNX 2 with automatic detection white balance, reduced size to 3MP and imprinted data from EXIF. When shooting, an Osawa 52mm Skylight (1A) Japan filter was used. The 2.8 lens gives noticeable vignetting.

Personal impressions

Nikon Lens Series E 28mm 1: 2.8 when used on Nikon DX cameras will have EGF 42mm, while all the charm of a wide angle will be lost. Nikon Lens Series E 28mm 1:2.8 at full frame can be used for various purposes where a wide viewing angle is required. The lens is very light and a pleasure to work with. Who is looking for a similar inexpensive autofocus lens, then Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8D will be better than this Series E.

Comments: 31, on the topic: Review of the Nikon Lens Series E 28mm 1: 2.8

  • Ullar

Ken Rockwell also spoke well about this lens, but, he says, he didn’t take it for himself, but took 24 mm 1: 2,8.

  • Wtf?

    so these are different lenses
they optical even have other circuits
the one in the review of 5 elements in 5 groups
    af-d 6 elements in 6 groups

    • Arkady Shapoval

As far as I know, Ken does not have a review of this lens. He wanted to add this lens to the 6 worst Nikon lenses of all time.

  • Stanislas

Dear Arkady, thank you very much for your work. For about six months I have been reading your reviews and articles with great interest, and I am very glad that there are such dedicated enthusiasts. I wish you to continue to please your colleagues (and not only) with your work. Thanks again.

    • Alexey Ovoshchnikov

Thanks for the link. There MKII version to be quite accurate.

  • Eugene

There is no word about sharpness. 8(

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not a single sharpness, the lens is red. Just look at the examples.

  • Novel

Arkady, your reviews are interesting, but I do not have enough purely technical information - resolution center / edge. Because when choosing a lens for a portrait, this indicator is not as important as for a landscape, subject and macro. Wide-angle non-autofocus optics are mainly used for landscape and architecture.

  • Amateur

Is this lens compatible with cameras like D90, D300?

    • KalekseyG

Especially with 300, 90 will not have metering.

  • Adil

    Hello, I want to ask
What happens if you use it on a cropped D3200?
at 42mm how much will the picture change?
and is it worth it to buy?
I thought to buy it because it is inexpensive and this is my first lens after cetaceans)

    • anonym

The case is not from Astana?) But it lies on such an alder. will have to focus and exposure manually. It is better to order a 35 mm lens from China

      • Adil

        Yes, from Astana)
        is it aliexpress from china?

        • Vitaly.

From there. Ordered here . You can topic about 50 mm Yungnou the link from the topic - Arkady will be counted.
The picture on the open one is slightly worse than that of the whale; it compares with the cover and becomes better. But the power is in the luminosity) In addition, Nikon's E series is budgetary, even Nikkor is not written. The aperture plus is autofocus and automatic exposure. I can't say about reliability yet - it works) Blend seems to fit Nikon's HB-47.

          • Adil

Given the crop, the width factor and cream bokeh will not be? I do not fully understand this topic, is it even worth taking ff to crop?

            • Valery A.

The width will not be that, on the crop the diagonal of the frame (with the same distance to the object) will be 1,5 times less, the bokeh of this lens will not go anywhere, but there is a nuance: with the same framing of the object on the crop and FF - on the crop you will have to move to 1,5 , 1,5 times back (on the contrary, approach the FF), and depth of field and, accordingly, bokeh depend on the distance to the object, the closer, the less depth of field and blurr bokeh. Theoretically (I did not check it myself), if you make a crop and FF on the frame from the same distance, and then crop the FF frame by 35 times, you will get two identical photos. Should I take FF lenses for crop? - it is possible, they are usually more expensive and heavier, but there is no DX fifty dollars (and the Canon XNUMX does not have DX).

            • Vitaly.

What difference does it make if the price is beautiful? Just take into account that the angle on the crop will be different. The only difference is that on FF this lens is wide-angle, but on crop it will be normal. And on the crop the edges will be "cut off", on which inexpensive FF lenses are hackneyed.
28-35 mm on crop, IMHO, you need to take with autofocus and autoexposure. And manual ones can be "portrait" 50-135, where there is time for focusing and selection of exposure.
And the cream bokeh can be done on the “whale”, of course it will be easier with this.

              • Valery A.

“Just consider that the angle on the crop will be different.” If Adil did not (does not have) FF, then what should he take into account? Please note that 28mm on this lens is the same as 28mm on 18-55DX and on any other.

              • Vitaly.

“If Adil did not have (does not have) FF, then what should he take into account? Keep in mind that 28mm on this lens is the same as 28mm on 18-55DX and on any other. ”
That's only in the reviews he could read that this is a wide-angle lens, which is what it is on the FF. Therefore, he wrote. And so yes, from a change in the size of the matrix, the FR does not change.

              • Adil

that is, instead of this 28mm, can I take an 18-55mm DX and the output will be the same picture? and with Chinese yongnuo 35mm, the output will be 52.2mm. buying a ff lens makes no sense if you do not take into account the aperture, right?

              • Vitaly.

In terms of quality, most likely yes. The whale is quite good. The Chinese will also have 35 mm. These are both budget FF lenses. But because of the higher aperture, there will be less depth of field, more background blur, less shutter speed - for this, they take high-aperture lenses, especially because of the latter. Even with an aperture of 2.8, the shutter speed will be about 6 times faster than an 18-55 at the same focal length.
And about the advantages of buying a budget FF, I already wrote above - “defective” edges are cut off on the crop and there are more chances of no vignette.

  • Jury

"For anyone looking for an AF lens like this, the Nikon AF Nikkor 28mm 1: 2.8D is better than this Series E."
The 28mm f / 2.8D is based on the same optical design as the Series E 28mm 1: 2.8. That is, this is the same lens, only with autofocus. If we talk about manual models with FR 28mm and aperture f / 2.8, then it is better to choose 28mm f / 2.8 AI-S.

  • Andrei

There is such a lens, but the focusing ring rotates very easily. By throwing your fingers over the aperture ring (to cover up after hovering), it is easy to knock out sharpness. The question is - is there a way to make the focusing ring tighter (with grease or screws which are inside)?

    • Victor

Grease, of course. Thicker. But this will require disassembling the lens to get to the helicoid.

    • B. R. P.

By the way, the focuser easily walked on fifty dollars E too, but not to the point of knocking down.
