Review Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X

Tokina AT-X 24-40mm 1: 2.8 - a good wide-angle zoom lens with manual focus from old film cameras. The lens boasts a very high-quality assembly of the case, especially the Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X made in japan. The lens is pretty heavy 530g immediately felt on camera.

Focusing on the lens is smooth, the focusing ring is comfortable, the ring itself rotates 90 degrees, while slightly moving forward, about half a centimeter. When focusing front lens rotates. The diameter of the front filter is 72mm. Also, when zooming, the zoom of the lens wave-like changes the length of the lens. In fact, the zooming is not noticeable. The minimum focusing distance is 40smwhich is pretty good.

The zoom positions are indicated for 24, 28, 35 and 40mm, the zoom ratio of the Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X is very small and is only 1,67X. I consider a more interesting set of focal length 20-35 in the model Tokina AT-X 235 PRO 20-35mm 1: 2.8... My Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X has a Canon mount and when used on a Canon APS-C crop camera with crop factor 1.6X gives EGF equal to 38-64mm. The Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X can also be used on full frame cameras. Tokina released this lens with different mounts for different cameras.

Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X has constant aperture f / 2.8 throughout the focal length field, that is, the aperture does not change when zooming, you can close the aperture to F / 22, while the aperture values are strictly fixed. The diaphragm device itself has 7 petals and gives nuts in bokeh on closed diaphragms.

Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X gives a sharp image already with F / 2.8, but on 2.8 noticeable light software due to chromatic and spherical aberrations, which greatly spoil the impression of the lens. The lens strongly distorts the color rendition towards warm tones (yellow), it is immediately visible in the viewfinder, it feels like you are shooting with a yellow filter. HA become acceptable on f / 4.0. The lens does not tolerate backlight, in other situations the contrast is level. The distortion on the cropped camera is almost imperceptible.

This time the weather did not smile at me, it was raining, because there are few examples of photos and they are lightly processed, so the whole RAW shot turned out to be 'gray and wet'. Reduced size and printed data from EXIF.

Personal experience

The Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X on the one hand is a very well-built lens, on the other the image quality is a little lame. Focusing manually is not difficult, especially since my Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X was equipped with a dandelion that gave an audible confirmation of focus.

Conclusions

Tokina 24-40mm F2.8 AT-X is an old lens from film cameras, when used on a crop, a wide enough angle will not be enough.

Interesting Boke at the lens :) By the way, I still took Tamron (Phoenix) 19-35. Not a bad shirik, but alas, the sharpness did not please ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would try it at full frame.

By the way, please tell me, I once saw that your friend sells optics in Kiev, is that so? :) If yes, you can email him :) I'm interested in Kaleinar5N and Helios 81N :) Thanks for the review :)

On iso800 the matrix is noisy just kapets !!! or is it noise after processing?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The matrix is noisy as well.

A little clarification: the so-called. soft effect is not chromatic aberration, but spherical. It is enough to remove some kind of colander or lanterns in the open in the evening and see how * halos * from them will be extended along the radius (from the center). At least I saw this on my Tokin AT-X PRO 28-70 / 2.6-2.8 ..

Had this with a Nikon bayonet mount, didn’t really like it, sold it. Now I photograph only fixes

Bought for $ 10 on the occasion of the Olympus mount. I’ll try tomorrow)

Actually, I tried. The weather is winter, gray, but the lens tested:
      1. There is not enough contrast, you have to pull it out already programmatically. A hood is clearly needed - it is afraid of flare. And you need a round hood - the front part of the lens rotates, which will ruin the life of the user of polarizing filters.
      2. Sharpness is sufficient starting from 4, at 2.8, especially at 40 mm, very soft.
      3. Bokeh pleasant, unobtrusive, unsharp.
      4. Chromatic aberration is surprisingly small, easy to edit in the editor, but even without this, the picture is quite sane.
      5. The lens is very yellow, this is already visible in the viewfinder. We have to correct the white balance.
      6. The most complicated scheme of 17 lenses contributes to the light transmission of the lens. Even at 2.8, the viewfinder is a bit dark. Comparing with more modern wide-angle, this is very noticeable.
      7. The mechanical lens is flawless. The soft, oily motion of the rings, the rings are rubberized, the lens is heavy, but small, knocked down.

As a result: you can find a better lens, optics have gone far ahead since the time when this glass was released, but ... if you suddenly get caught for little money, then it is quite possible to use it.

On the fact of occasional use of the lens, I will add a few more words: the lens does not tolerate side and oncoming light very badly, the reason for this is the disgusting blackening of the lenses - after I received a bunch of spoiled photos in sunny weather, I decided and disassembled the lens - the front lens is not blackened at all, on others chamfers flare up in the light. Blackened as it should - the lens sparkled with new colors - from somewhere and the contrast came from, and there are fewer hares to catch. And so this disgusting blackening spoils the sensation of the lens ... Amazing carelessness, which I did not expect from the Japanese, especially on such a serious lens.

    • Vlad

      And how is blackening?

      • Dmitriy

And we take out the lenses from the lens and cover the ends with chamfers with black paint. Many lenses, both Soviet and Japanese, benefit from contrast and "photophobia"

  • Dmitriy

    40mm open soft

Before blackening in the bright sun

    Well, another frame

Thanks for the reviews. I was looking for information on this lens, (I want it sharp on crop-sony) in the photos to the review in the data shows the F-1.4 focal length 50mm. ??? Maybe the photos are accidentally mixed up?

    • Michael

These are the parameters of a standard dandelion

  • Kate

I agree with the “Conclusion.” I had a lens on the crop, it gave good blurring sharpness, I didn't catch the focus right away and it was not obvious that it was wide. .The angle is wider, the picture has become more interesting.

good review thanks ... I have a tokin of 28-85 at 4,0 constant aperture design is exactly the same ... but the buzzer does not heat up, on the contrary it cools how much the tokin had not AF all cold and sigma warm well and bokeh as a linear blur in the FS the background looks a little unusual ...
