Nikon AF 105mm f / 2.8D Micro-Nikkor review

The prefix 'Micro' in the name of the lens indicates that the lens can shoot macro. Speaking rudely, then Nikon'sMicrophone'really means'Macro'. If you go straight to the point, the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D is a very good lens with incredible sharpness, excellent assembly and good aperture. The weight of the lens is 560 grams, and the lens itself is made of aluminum alloy painted with black paint.

Please note that there are three autofocus versions. Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8:

Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D is a lens from film cameras, and therefore it can work perfectly on modern full-frame FX cameras of the type Nikon D3s or D800. When using a lens on cropped Nikon DX CZKs, the viewing angle with such a lens will be narrower, and EGF will match 157,5 mm.

The most important feature of the Nikon Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D is the ability to macro with an increase of 1 to 1 - this means that real-world objects can be projected onto the camera matrix in real size. The lens has a special scale indicating the increase depending on the focusing distance.

Focusing
Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D has a special auto focus limiter, which can be in two positions: 'Limit \ Full'. Pregnant Limit focusing is available from infinity to 50 cm, with a maximum magnification of 1: 3. You can limit the work not only from infinity to 50 cm, but also vice versa - from MDF to 50 cm, thus leaving only the macro range. Pregnant Full focus is available from infinity to 31,4 смwhile the maximum increase is 1: 1. Such a limiter is simply indispensable for easy and quick use of the lens.

Auto focus in Limit mode from infinity to 50cm is average, not fast. In Limit mode, from 50 cm to MDF, auto focus is slow. But in Full mode, the focus is just monstrous slow, the camera needs about 3 seconds to 'drive off' the lens from infinity to MDF and vice versa. Slow auto focus in Full mode is completely fearless, since for macro shooting it is much more convenient to use manual focus.

The lens has a focus mode switch 'M \ A', which is fixed with a special locking button. In automatic mode 'A', the focus ring rotates freely and does not affect the focusing process itself. In 'M' mode, only manual focus is available. After putting the lens into manual focus mode, you can optionally not switch the focus mode near the camera mount. The focus ring is very comfortable, rubberizedFocusing by hand is very nice. The focus distance scale is in feet and meters. DOF is for F / 32 only.

When focusing front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens is extended in the Limit mode by 1.5 cm, and the Full mode by about 3-4 cm. The trunk of the lens consists of two components, when focusing the lens leaves the recess to the edge of the frame. When focusing the back lens remains motionless. The lens uses filters with a diameter of just 52 mmA filter with this diameter is very easy to find. Also, the lens uses a unique CRC focusing system (close range correction), which allows you to get high-quality photos at any focusing distance.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D Feature
The lens in the name has the designation 'f / 2.8', but in fact the aperture f / 2.8 is only available when focusing on infinity. When changing the focusing distance, the maximum relative aperture on the lens automatically changes from F / 2.8 (focusing at infinity) to F / 5.0 (focusing on MDF). This is normal for a macro lens and you should not be afraid of it. Actually, this does not mean physical closure of the diaphragm (the petals remain in the same position), a change in the F number with a change in the focusing distance is introduced specifically to achieve accurate metering exposure.

Aperture can close to F / 32 when focusing at infinity and up to F / 57.0 with MDF (tested on Nikon D700).

Important:

In order for the lens to start working normally on modern DLCs, you need to set the f / 32 value on the lens and click a special switch near the aperture control ring. After such a manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture from the camera, as with any modern lens. If this is not done, then the CCC will show the error 'fEE', you can read more about this feature in the section about Non-G type lens.

Image quality:
The lens has good color rendering and good contrast. Very sharp in the center and at the edges of the frame starting from F / 2.8 and until it hits the diffraction threshold. I want to note that this is a really very sharp lens and also with nice bokeh. When closing the diaphragm with a 7-blade design, the diaphragm makes itself felt. The lens is completely devoid of distortion. Vignetting disappears when you close the aperture to F / 5.6 when used on FX cameras.

Sample Photos
All sample photos from Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D were taken with the camera Nikon D700,JPEG L FINE,VI. Photos without processing, only the size is reduced to 3 MP and the data from EXIF. When shooting was used protective filter Nikon NC 52mm Japan.

Personal experience
Such a lens has clearly set goals - it’s macro shooting, because the Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D is suitable for people whose priority is macro photography. I got a lot of pleasure working with the 105mm 'makrushnik'.

Lens view Nikon AF 105 mm f 2.8 D Micro Nikkor and Tamrn 90 2.8 AF

Limit focusing speed is well suited for leisurely portraits. I’m not afraid to use macro lenses for portraiture; in some genres they are better than other lenses to cope with the set portrait tasks, as they provide excellent micro contrast and the highest detailing along with pleasant bokeh. I also add that macro lenses can serve as a cheap alternative for 'gluttonous' cameras with a large number of megapixels and a low diffraction threshold. Macro lenses can easily feed a multi-megapixel camera with its huge resolution. Now this lens is obsolete, since there is a more modern Nikon Micro-Nikkor AF-S VR 105mm f / 2.8G, but the old Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D can still surprise many with its image quality.

Conclusions:
Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D - excellent macro lens, can be used not only for macro, but also for other general photographic purposes. Has a focus stop, good design. Among the shortcomings are the lack of a focus motor and the lack of internal focusing.

    Very satisfied, sharp.

Good day Arkady. Tell me which converter to use so that autofocus doesn’t go away. Faced a problem, wanted to get my own Nikon teleconverter two, but it turned out that autofocus is not supported with this lens model. Kenko advises, but I didn’t work with him and I don’t know what to do .. Thank you in advance for your reply and Happy New Year to you

I just wanted to find out about the bundles of this lens from the 105 / 2.8D review and the inverted 50 / 1.4D (through the reversing ring), no one tried it? What about vignetting on such a bunch and what will be the macro scale approximately?

  • Alexander

    Good day, Arkady.
Can you tell me about the Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor VR 105mm 1: 2.8G IF-ED, before what year it was released in Japan, and is it possible to find one?
    Thanks in advance, Regards, Alexander.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In Japan from 2006 to 2009. It can be found.

  • Alexander

    thank you

  • Vsevolod

Good day! Who knows if there is a difference between Japanese and Chinese Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor VR 105mm 1: 2.8G IF-ED?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Japanese are older. In Chinese, only the assembly is Chinese, there is not much difference.

      • Vsevolod

Thank you ... I managed to get a relatively inexpensive Chinese one in good condition ... It is a pity that you do not have a review of this lens. It seems to me that he deserves it.

  • Paul

Hello Arkady! It would be interesting to read about the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 4.0s lens. Thanks in advance.

    • Lynx

Well, so send it to Arkady for a review, I think he will make it with pleasure.

    • Antip

Found interesting information about Nikon 105/4
Judging by the serial number, the latest Ai-S version of the Nikon 105/4 macro lens was released in 1983. It is superior in optical performance to the modern autofocus Nikon 105mm f / 2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor. The lens is equipped with a clamping screw, which allows you to fix the position of the focus ring, and unlike its successor 105 / 2.8 Ai-S, it has a built-in lens hood.
Focal Length Max. aperture Min. diaphragm Petals diaphragms Half-stops MDF (m) Filter (mm.) Weight (g.) Length (mm)
      105 мм f/4 f/32 7 нет 0.47 52 500 104
If it is correct, then for macro photography it will be better to 105/4?

  • Bogdan

for d7000 what do you recommend this or Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55mm 1: 2.8?

  • Anatoly

I THINK THE LENS IS UNAFFECTIVELY ROAD. FOR LOVERS SPECIALLY.

  • Anatoly

THE ERA OF A TAAA LENGTH OF LENSES ALREADY PASSED 25 YEARS AS. Soon, there will be SLR-zoom 20-50x. And the price will fall accordingly. But it will remain a bite in order to earn righteous labor.

  • Dmitriy

Hello, help me choose between the newer Nikon AF-S 105mm f / 2.8 VR Micro and Sigma 105mm f / 2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro
the difference in price is not significant and both lenses seem to be praised in the reviews ... but which one is better?
(did not find a comparison of these two lenses)

Hello. What is better nikon 105mm f / 2.8D AF Micro or Tokina AT-X M100 AF PRO D?

  • Olga Kyss

Thanks for your reviews. Thanks to them, I chose the lenses :) I want to show a couple of photos Nikon 105 2,8d. No processing, reduced size.

    • Yarkiya

Olga Kyss show your couple of photos.

  • Vadim

    good day!
help with the choice, for shooting jewelry, between Nikon Nikkor AF 60 / 2.8D Micro and Nikon Nikkor 105 / 2.8 Micro (Non-D type)? carcass nikon d800. I’m interested in the differences in lenses, especially in the field of depth of field, will it be and on which lens will it be larger?
    Thank you!

Good day. I bought one the other day, super. In a state of new in Japan http://www.ebay.com/itm/282209862336?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The seller and Nikon could not provide a link to the manual, apparently it is not. You can read more about: "You can limit the work not only from infinity to 50 cm, but also vice versa - from MDF to 50 cm, thus leaving only the macro range."
How to do the opposite, from mdf to 50cm
    Thank you

    • Sergei

Everything is very simple. Put Full, focus on MDF, set limit, that's it.

    • anonym

You ordered a lens with you ??

  • Rustem

    Good afternoon.
I want to take such a lens, only boo, for subject shooting. Will it be enough for shooting objects like jewelry and gifts? There is also 17-50mm sigma 2.8 and 50mm 1.8. Will this kit be enough for a full subject shooting? Thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Subject shooting is demanding on light and skills. This macro-weaving in itself is good and should be enough for the eyes. Other half-hearted lenses can also handle shooting small sets.

  • anonym

    I have 7 lenses, but most often I work with 105 / 2,8

  • Vladimir

tell me what is the best choice for macro, Tamron SP AF 90mm 1: 2.8 Di MACRO 1: 1 272EN II or Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f / 2.8D for crop d80 carcass? which one will be sharper, easier to work?

  • Mujmin

Please tell me, how much worse is it than the new 105 G version? Is it worth overpaying for a new version, or can you take this one if you get it in good condition?
And I also wanted to know by the sharpness; Is the usual 85D / f1.8 or 85 G f / 1.8 much inferior in sharpness to this “macro”?

    • Michael

Not really in the subject, but as far as I know, there are almost no bad macro resolutions) Conventional resolution lenses will greatly yield to macro at short distances

  • Sergey

Hello. I decided to get the first macro lens. Tell me which one is better to choose. From this review or 60mm 2.8d on my d7000 crop camera? It's just that these glasses are in my city, and the price is about the same. I plan to take pictures in the country: flowers, bushes, caterpillars, bugs. For portraits 105 I will not use it for sure, since there are 80-200 2.8 thanks in advance.

    • Alexey

better than this one - the sharpness is higher, the distortion and HA are zero, and the distance from the subject is greater, which can be convenient.

      • Sergey

Thank. I'll try to bargain it, I guess. I just thought that 60mm would be a little universal. I had 135mm Jupiter 37a, well, I didn’t know what to do with it, except for portraits.

  • Alexey

I shoot with such girls on a kenon, the only problem is that it is not optimized for shooting at long distances and therefore it is difficult to focus. but there are no complaints about the picture at any aperture value. and yes, it has a completely flat image field and HA needs to be looked for with a magnifying glass, we can say that there are none at all :)

    • Roman

Makrik, sometimes this is not the topic, sometimes the other way around, when a portrait with great detail or significant details immediately throughout the frame, and not as usual in the center. Therefore, it’s better to score a makrik for a hundredth, and for classics to have something from 85/135.

      • Alexey

and for the classics I have nippon kogaku 105 2.5, which is Zonnar, 60s - a much more classic portrait lens)) and there is SF Zonnar 180 2.8, a fool that still.

        • Rodion

Yeah, you know a lot about good portraiture)))

  • Andrei

Hello. Tell me which lens will be preferable in terms of sharpness and bokeh (on crop), micro nikkor 105 2.8d or Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro 272E. Used price is close. It is interesting mainly in macro and a few portraits.

  • Viktoriya

Say whether weasel chi pidijde to the whole object of Yongnuo YN24EX? Is it the wrong diameter to cross the circle?

    • B. R. P.

The diameter of the light filter is 52mm. Sleep mae go to the chamber.

  • Dmitriy

You write “lack of inner focus”, how is that?

    • Michael

This is when the front and rear lenses do not move when focusing

      • Victor

        On the contrary :)

        • Michael

          Well yes)

      • Novel

By the way, there are no such requirements for the rear lens. It is required that the front lens does not rotate and that the outer dimensions of the lens do not change. Glass sucking air will still be IF.

        • Michael

          No, it will be RF
