Overview I23U 4,5 / 110

I23U 4,5 / 110 (Industar-23U F4,5 110mm) - lens from the de-format photoУa magnifier. Made at the Lytkarinsky plant.

Due to the fact that the lens is designed to work with a photo enlarger, I23U 4,5 / 110 does not have a focus ring and thread under the filter. Using I23U 4,5 / 110 you can not focus. The lens has a thread mount M39. I used I23U 4,5 / 110 with 5 centimeters macro rings to achieve focus on infinity on CZK Nikon. As a primitive sharpening method, I used the easy twisting of the macro rings from each other. The lens has a 6-blade aperture, which can take the values F / 4.5, 5.6, 8, 11, 16. You can read how to use such lenses on modern cameras here.

Sample photos and image quality

The lens is not really designed for ordinary photography. Industar-23U F4,5 110mm does not tolerate backlight, is afraid of any light. Image contrast is very low. Typically, lenses with an optical design such as Tessar show good bokeh quality, but the bokeh on the Industar-23U F4,5 110mm turned out to be rather meager. The only advantage of the lens is the lack of vignetting when used on full-frame cameras. Sample photos have been finalized since the original pictures have very low contrast.

Personal experience

Industar-23U F4,5 110mm can be used for macro photography due to the fact that focusing is not particularly important for macro photography, and focusing can be done by zooming in or out of the camera from the subject. By the way, I have more reviews of similar lenses - Vega-5U 105 mm F4.0 и Amar 4,5 /105.

    To be honest - in comparison with Amar, this industrial turned out to be y. I don’t know why, but my sample has a strong open source software and chromatism.

  • Stanislas

    On my Pentax with macro rings it works like a 110mm lens with infinity. Example photo at f / 16 aperture

  • Eugene

    For information. A negative lens (Barlow) from an Industar 23U lens, inserted into an extension ring # 2 (14mm) (with 42x1mm thread), when used with telephoto lenses, gives an increase in focal length of about 2,33 krat, with a relatively satisfactory image quality. There is a certain chromatism. But in black and white photography you can put up, and in color - if you need to get a large increase. Why about 2,33 krats, because with different lenses the magnification may differ slightly. With the addition of extension rings, the focal length will increase but the aperture will decrease. With rings # 3 and # 2 (28mm plus 14mm) the increase will be 2,95 krat. It makes no sense to add more rings, since the magnification will change slightly, and the aperture will drop significantly.

      A very long time ago I also bought an I-23U for manipulating macro rings. I lay idle for a long time - now it would be correct to assemble it, but I don't remember the location of the lenses. Who knows ? Tell me please !
      Thanks in advance !

  • Vladislav

    Arkady thank you very much for your work. Sincerely, Vladislav.

    with the beginning of the lens, then the ring for the macro, and then the tipo ring (m42)?
    but what kind of ring is there?
    I found I23U, I found rings, and the ring M42.
    I23u and the rings close together macro and the adapter M42 does not join, it only fits with the camera and not with the lens,
    tell me what the ring is

    • BB

      The order is as follows:
      I23U => Adapter_M39-M42 =>
      => tube_M42 =>
      => adapter for your M42 / Nikon system (Canon / Sony / Pentax / ...) =>
      => Your device.

  • ss1488

    I stayed as they said above. I23u + transition 39-42 + set of macro rings + transition Canon + carcass itself. The result is I can’t catch the focus, not to mention the macro. On the Nikon system, the same thing. What is the matter?

  • Eugene

    Answer SS1428. The focal length of "Industar 23U" is 110mm. Therefore, one set of extension rings will not be enough for you to reach infinity, let alone macro photography. One set of rings is only 49mm (28mm + 14mm + 7mm). If you have a Canon camera, then another 44mm (flange distance), plus 1mm thickness of the adapter ring from the thread 42x1mm to the mount. For the missing millimeters, you need to pick up more rings from the second set. And after that, for macro photography, add the required number of rings, depending on the required magnification.

  • Eugene

    Addition to the above. I don’t remember now, but I need to see what is the “Industar 23U” working distance. For to reach infinity, one set of rings may be enough. You just need to put some spacer rings. For example cardboard.

  • BB

    only you need to read from the 'optical center' of the lens to the plane of the matrix.
    i.e. 44 (or 45) + 49 + (from the mount to the optical center)

  • Eugene

    I would say to the reference plane of the lens. Therefore, I focused on the size of the rear segment of the lens. For the size of the installed rings plus the working segment of the camera should correspond to the rear segment of the lens.

    Good evening, photo lovers. Today I tested this unit, also Lyktarinskoy. Described above
    the method was focused, my copy (and it’s new) showed satisfactory sharpness and contrast, much better than my white Industar 50., the color does not go to any shades, the dynamic range is also not bad. After RAW processing, the pictures are better than whales,
    correct color rendition, he shot a video also a solid four, brightly lit objects
    it’s better not to shoot, he doesn’t cope with them, but this is the trouble of many Soviet lenses, I
    I use dimming filters for such situations. This is not the worst lens that came to me, if you have extra free time, you can completely spend it on shooting this
    lens, I liked it.

    • Rodion

      So he's really good. Put light deflectors in the back - the contrast will rise.
      The only thing. the lens has a very poor picture seemed to me. And so - quite nothing.

  • Oleg 1

    Rodion agrees the picture from him is not very good, you need to work hard at RAW, but shooting on this lens
    entertainment, although mine showed the quality is much better than in the review, but the video is pretty decent.

    I bought such a lens for 130 rubles, and I had an old Soviet photo magnifier that was disassembled, redone for other needs, the furs were also removed and this design was assembled

  • Peter

    About six months ago I bought such a lens for 150 rubles. He did not impress me then, and after dancing with boob ... oh, with rings :) I generally lost interest in this lens and sent it to the shelf ... But today I got a miracle called "PZF" and my opinion about the I-23U sharply has changed for the better. I even got the idea that they were made for each other. I think it will be great with a hood;)

  • Novel

    Recently, quite by accident, I saw one box at a flea market, which looks suitable for storing a lens. Stopped to take a closer look. It turned out that there was also an “I23U No. 65O2” lens inside, and in excellent condition. The hoarder first requested 1000 rubles. I got acquainted with this review and, as a result, the next day I bargained with it for only 200 rubles. I didn’t regret my profitable purchase. I use it with Canon Macro Mech. The pictures are very beautiful. Pictures can be viewed here https://vk.com/album472310455_256644625

  • Sergei

    I put it on Sony a58, through the macro rings, I caught infinity by unwinding the rings, it gives a juicy one. a contrasting picture, the color rendition is slightly more saturated than it is in reality, on open softit, plans to stick to the helicoid from Industar 50, for focusing.

  • Jury

    I assembled a similar design, using extension rings and a helicoid from Industar 50-2 for Zenit. Helicod blackened with soot, since its inner surfaces do not have blackening. The contrast is satisfactory, the sharpness at open aperture is good, at F 8 it is very good.

  • Ivan

    What optical system does it have?
