Canon Zoom Lens EF 28-135mm 1: 3.5-5.6 USM IS Review

The Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS is one of the first standard zoom lenses with IS for full-frame digital and film cameras. The lens began to be produced back in 1998, my made in Japan. The lens has a 5x zoom, however, for the convenience of the zoom it is worth paying a loss in aperture. Aperture the lens is mediocre, like many other zoom lenses. The Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS is pleasing because, on full-frame cameras, 28mm focal lengths give a fairly wide angle of view, and at the long end 135mm focal lengths allow a short tele-range. For owners of full-frame cameras by type Canon 5D The Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS lens can act as a travel zoom or camera lens for simple photographic tasks.

Integrated IS Stabilizer (Image Stabilization) The stabilizer must compensate up to 2 stops of exposure, there are no complaints about the stabilizer's operation, and the real stabilization system can be pulled out by two forces. There is a stabilization mode operation switch on the lens: Stabilizer ON / OFF. When the stabilizer is turned on and the shutter button is pressed halfway, the lens can make a slight hum, it works gyroscopic sensors.

Lens focus internal. Auto focus is enough fastThis is facilitated by the quiet and fast USM (Ultrasonic) motor. In auto focus mode, manual focus compensation is available. The lens has an AF / MF focus mode switch. In MF mode, focusing is performed using a special focus ring. The focus ring is rubberized and rotates in the active position by approximately 120 degrees. The focus ring is narrow and uncomfortable. The Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS has a focus distance scale. MDF at 135mm focal length is 50sm, while you can get macro with a magnification of 1 to 5. There is a special 'macro' zone on the focusing distance scale.

View of the Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS lens at 135mm focal length with an extended trunk

Zooming in will extend the 'trunk' of the lens without rotating the front lens. The lens has a very easy stroke of the zoom ring and the zoom ring is rubberized. The lens suffers spontaneous lengthening and shortening of the 'trunk', moreover, this ailment on my copy turned out to be very neglected - it is enough to tilt the camera, as the lens zoom spontaneously changes.

The lens weighs 550 grams, its optical design includes 16 elements in 12 groups, one of the elements is aspherical. I did not like the build quality of the lens, the front lens elements hang outeven knock when using the lens. The lens is designed for 10 years of use.

Image quality

The lens is not very strong HA, in the backlight can catch hares (see examples). The distortion at 28mm is small, but the vignetting at 28mm is strong enough when used on full-frame cameras, and at 28mm on open apertures, the edges of the image are not sharp enough. In general, at all focal points, the central part of the image is quite sharp, but I would advise you to cover the aperture to F / 8.0 if possible. The diaphragm consists of 6 petals, 135mm can be obtained blurred background.

Personal experience using the Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS lens

I do not recommend buying this lens for Canon APS-C cropped cameras, as EGF will correspond to 44.8-216mm, and the possibility of normal use of a wide angle with this lens will be lost. For cropped cameras, there is a 'cropped version' of this lens - Canon EF-S 17-85mm f / 4-5.6 USM IS. In general, I did not particularly like the lens.

Conclusions

The Canon EF 28-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 USM IS was generally a good zoom lens for full-frame cameras. The lens boasts a fast auto focus and image stabilizer, but the lens is not confused by the most robust design.

I had such a lens, it is also a good vacuum cleaner, the dust sucks wonderfully.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

I have such an objective. for the price they want for it - it's a good lens. Do not expect the performance of an L-series lens from the universal budget zoom, which is this lens. front lens backlash if the lens is used for a long time, but this does not interfere with anything and is not noticeable. the trunk, as they say, leaves - this is the problem with all such zooms, and then it leaves when the lens is several years old. the glass is heavy and therefore leaves. The sharpness of this lens is excellent, the stabilizer works better than on Nikon's lenses, the focus speed is also instantaneous. It is not for nothing that on foreign sites they rate this objective 4.5 out of 5. Once again I want to remind you that this is not an L objective.
The proposed alternative 17-85 is darker than this lens. and in general, it should be noted that on this lens the stabilizer works so well that indoors, under the light of lamps, you can take pictures with your hands and get sharp photos.

    • Edgar

If only 17-85 were darker. It seems to me that he also terribly lathers, at 17mm sharpness only appears after f8. And the most annoying is that periodically you need to wear it to the service, to replace the loop.

      • Lohness

To avoid wearing the service, you need to use it carefully and do not touch the ring of manual focus when AF is set.

Good afternoon, there is a canon 550D and a tamron 17-50 / 2,8. I’m thinking of switching to ff and changing it to 5d (used) + this 28-135, do you think the picture quality will be worse or will it remain at the same level?

    • Arkady Shapoval

In different tasks, quality will behave differently. In general, I think it will be better.

    • anonym

don’t take this get on a full frame, dig on 24-105 4LHe’s not so expensive, but you’ll save your nerves !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Koba

I can say that 5D will produce a picture much better than a crop, it's even inconvenient to compare. But the device as a whole is a bit troublesome due to frequent dust getting on the matrix, although it can be cleaned quickly once every two months ... I think that the best option would be to buy a Tamron 28-75 / 2.8, in terms of optical properties and in terms of aperture it is much superior this kenon zoom ... it is also surpassed by kenon 24-85, very cheap but high-quality glass ...

  • Sergei

Arkady, please, your opinion on the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS lens. Goes like a whale to the 7D camera. Unfortunately, I did not find a description of this lens on the site. I face a choice: what is better for 7D as a station wagon?

    • Ivan

The same g as the lens in Shapoval's review ...
      See below.

  • Ivan

Discarded money or a piece of Chinese plastic of low standard.
Visually, I don’t argue good enough fast in focusing pleasantly heavy in the hands ... All the pluses.
Further, there are some disadvantages - the loosened everything squeaks the focus of the soap at all values, the angle narrow for the crop.
Conclusion - you have a canon - go broke on Lku and do not waste your money and time.
I played with him at one time for a week and took it back to the store.
    Whale was more honest)))

  • Mr. Boggy

I would also go broke, but I don’t print money like Ivan, and I had a chance to use 24-105 L on a fullframe and was not particularly impressed with the “rescuness” and elite. I didn't see much difference, except that the constructive was professional. The vignette with its 24mm open even pissed me off. I think 28-135 is a good budgetary staff for eos 5d, 5d mkll - If you are an economical lover and a trunk with plastic does not bother you. For a crop over 10 megapixels, it will not be very good.

    • Lohness

They wrote exactly about the pixels! On the 50D, 28-135 is definitely worse than 17-85. The picture is rustic. However, on the 5D, the 28-135 lens is transformed, not into a prince of course, but it definitely pulls on the boyar. In my case, the picture is evil, the picture soapy. It’s soap, not grease. It’s necessary to turn it off. And the plastic trunk, backlash and other rubbish, they practically do not interfere with getting good pictures, so they are not worth attention.

  • Albert

I have such a copy bought from hand, I use it on the Canon 30D, it was little used a little, the trunk does not leave, but still managed to suck out a couple of dust particles.
This means that I noticed during reportage shooting very often the autofocus does not hit the target, you enlarge the picture, and there is a wall in focus, the target is soapy. I almost always shoot with the center point and aim at the eye, but alas.
I tried to do the same with the Canon EF-S 18-135mm IS lens under the same conditions of fast shooting, this accuracy of hitting the target is much higher, we can say that it does not even miss.
Interestingly, it turns out somehow, like a 28-135mm class higher ...?

    • Mr. Boggy

Albert, your camera is a crop. It’s just the owners of cropped cameras littering the Internet with reviews that “does not focus”. That is why the ef-s works better for you, since it is better adapted for this camera. I tried this lens at 60d Canon, and I also focused every other time, there was soap. A digital full-frame camera is completely analogous to a film camera in terms of the matrix arrangement and its size, and the mirror is the same. So even such an old lens feels better on a full frame, and there are fewer misses.

  • Alex

I didn’t find a suitable topic, so I am writing here. In the “Saturn” hardware store, I saw an EF-S 18-135mm 1: 3,5-5,6 IS STM lens in Germany and a postscript below with an “ultrasonic motor”. , should be at the end of USM. I tell the seller why mislead buyers. He says everything is correct, I am from CANON and this is the latest development from the company, which I still don’t believe. For 399 Euros cheap for USM. They argued for a long time, each remained unconvinced. What do you say about this. Do a review on this glass. Please.

Are EF-S lenses suitable for full frames? Or do not go at all? I am facing a choice between this lens and the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS for 5d mark 2

    • Arkady Shapoval

Relatives do not fit at all.

      • EvAlex888

Hello! And can optics like the Kanon EF-S be suitable for full-frame Canon cameras? What can change in this case? ………… ..What does it mean “relatives” do not fit at all? Whose relatives, from which cameras, and to which ones?

        • B. R. P.

This means Canon’s cropped lenses will not fit Canon’s full-frame cameras, unlike third-party cropped lenses, for Canon mounts. When installing cropped lenses on full-frame cameras, the size of the image displayed on the matrix changes, it occupies only the central part of the frame, the edges are black.

  • Ivan

I used it for several days. 5D camera, focusing in auto mode. The picture is pleasant, I liked the colors. But the sharpness did not impress, at all. Maybe, of course, the hands are crooked ...

  • Arseny

If you take the first step, it is better 28-135 or Tamronovsky 28-75 f2.8. Forums did not give an answer.
Tactically-visually wins the native, as well as in the sharpness characteristics at a wide angle.
    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=116&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=0&LensComp=366&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2

But the “lack of freedom” in the choice of the aperture number and the drop in contrast in the presence of the sun on the side of the shooting are confusing. Therefore, doubts.

Those who personally used both (just like me, but it was only on crop) can say which is preferable?
(yes, yes, I just can't choose)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Personally, I shot for a long time on Tamron, and wrote a review of this 28-135, Tamron ultimately gives a better picture, especially at equivalent apertures, and I recommend it.

      • Arseny

        Thank you.
        Doom load off your shoulders.

      • Arseny

But I will nevertheless answer that according to synthetic tests, Boots wins in terms of the picture on an equivalent basis. diaphragms, which confuses me, and 60 mm of "extra" focal length is more than the Tamron itself in general.

        • Arkady Shapoval

synthetics "picture" does not show, only certain parameters.

      • Andrei

        Arkady, good day.
Tell me, please, which Tamron did you recommend for the full frame in the message dated 11.07.2015/11/49 at XNUMX:XNUMX?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Most likely 28-75 / 2,8

  • Oleg

I had such a lens. I was happy to sell it.

  • Vyacheslav

Yuzayu Canon 28-135 on Canon 7D a couple of months. Narrowly? Yes narrowly. The native 18-135 IS doesn’t give such a natural picture as this one, let the trunk climb out, hang out, something in it when it focuses, it purrs, but it focuses instantly, it almost does not catch hares, it takes off very sharply, I did not see much difference from 24-105 L in those I’m shooting the modes (not for all focal ones), the stub works clearly, I almost did not catch any lubricants. A worthy lens for such money, one drawback is that it is narrow on the crop, but I have enough for portraits against the background of nature.

  • Eugene

The lens is good. For 150 USD boo. you will not find a better zoom on ff kenon. At 135 mm, it shoots almost macro and the background washes beautifully. With sharpness, everything is ok with him, in contrast to Soviet lenses or lenses of the last century. The colors are kenon, beautiful, in contrast to the gray-brown tamron. Minus - aperture 5.6 x 135 mm and build quality, well, the stub is strange. For the street, and especially for travel, there is no better lens. For weddings, there are 24-70 2.8 ii and 70-200 2.8 ii.

Friends! In general, half a year ago, according to the review on this site, I decided to buy this glass. To be honest, everyone who commits sin on him simply does not know how to use a fotik. Yes! I do not exclude that bad or defective / damaged samples may come across, but the lens is just super. made more than 10k frames on it. irreplaceable glass for kenon 100d. great combination. small \ powerful body + excellent and compact universal zoom. So take it without hesitation .. And buy a dlenda! :)

    • kotofei

      useless for crop. SHU no.
For crop, 18-135 is better, any. And in the quality of the picture, and in the work of the stub, and in mass and size.
for 10k frames they could have guessed ..

  • Fedor

Great lens, use 3 years on crop. Loves good lighting, suitable for reportage shooting. http://imgsrc.ru/my_cookery/61001538.html

Hello Some of us can speak English

  • EvAlex888

Hello! Or can optics like Kanon EF-S come up to full-frame Canon cameras? What could change?

    • Vlad

It may work, but it may not. Read on for a specific lens, preferably from several independent sources. Vignette, clinging of the mirror to the lens, software restrictions ... Do you need it?

    • Roman

Canon’s native EF-S optics will not be mechanically mounted on full-frame cameras - the protrusion on the mount, which is not on EF lenses, interferes. If the ledge is cut away, the recessed last element on a number of lenses will also hinder - Canon makes good use of the system parameters in the calculations and takes into account the smaller mirror size, and due to this it produces very good native glass for crop.

Non-native optics EF-S will be all, but with varying success in terms of image quality. It is usually designed for Nikon F, which allows you to work with DX-optics in crop mode, so they take into account the large size of the mirror and nothing should cling. But quality usually suffers. Somewhere the corners are unsharp, somewhere the vignette is not just a vignette, but black corners. Some zooms work well on a certain range of focal lengths.

If anyone is interested, then I found a great way to fix the problem with the trunk of this wonderful lens coming out. Moreover, without cosmetic intervention.
Simply slide the rubber ring off the zoom ring. Underneath, three small screws will open, onto which the brass bushings are screwed. Unscrew one screw and take out the sleeve. It is not worth twisting everything at once, and it is not necessary for alteration. Then you take regular PTFE tape, which is used for plumbing purposes, and wrap this sleeve in it along the tape. Do about 6-10 full turns slightly vnatyag, thereby getting a kind of "candy" with two ponytails on the sides. Then we cut off the tape, twist the tails tighter and cut them off. We pierce the wrapped sleeve and insert the screw into place. And we put all this in the assembly in place in the slot of the zoom ring. We check if I extend the front lens tube. If the effect is not enough, then we carry out the same manipulations with the second and, perhaps, the third screw. Then we push the elastic into place and enjoy the result.

PS Tape layers can be applied even more, even if the effect of three screws is weak. There is a lot of room for experimentation.

  • Fedor

The lens is not bad for the money. I have it on 5d2, versatile, comfortable, it feels like there is a stub. He also shoots decent macro, about which for some reason there is not a word in the review. If it had been 24 mm more, not 28 - the price would not have been there, for landscapes the most universal thing, so as not to carry a few glasses with you. In terms of the picture and in general in terms of work, it does not differ so much from 24-105L, 24-105L is a little softer in the picture, the same sharpness and speed of operation. I chose between Elko and this one, I didn’t regret it, although the difference on used copies is about three times. instagram @ fyodor.e

Hello everyone. I bought a lens a couple of days ago. So far I tested it on canon 6d. On the first day without adjusting the focus and lens hood, it was normal from f8 and not always stable. Then he made an amendment in the camera, put on a short threaded hood and went back to test on children. As a result, he became sharp at all focal points. I liked the color right from the camera. For 4k, a very good lens. Also the stub is not bad
