Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1 review: 2.8 f = 135mm

Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1 review: 2.8 f = 135mm

Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1: 2.8 f = 135mm is an old lens from the 1970s, my copy was made between 1971-73... Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1: 2.8 f = 135mm is a class lens Non-ai or PRE AI, my copy is redone for AI, so I used it without any problems on Nikon D80 и Nikon D700. How to use old Nikon lenses can be found in the section on AI-S. There were several modifications of Nikon class 135 \ 2.8 MF lenses, the main ones are Nikon Q Auto, Nikon QC Auto, 135 / 2.8 KNikon AI 135 / 2.8, Nikon AI-S 135 / 2.8, Nikon 135 / 2.8 E.

The lens uses filters with a diameter of 52 mm, while focusing the front lens does not rotate, and the trunk of the lens is extended by 1 cm. The focus ring rotates 180 degrees and has a nice grip. The lens has a depth of field scale for F / 8, 16, 22. MDF leaves only 1.5 meters. The aperture can take a value from F / 2.8 to F / 22while the diaphragm device consists of 7 petals, when closing in the out of focus area, you can get the usual 'nuts'. The aperture blades are matte and do not reflect light.

Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1: 2.8 f = 135mm is made in Japan, and it is made very high quality - all of metal and glass, the focusing ring is not rubberized. The weight is about 600 grams, the lens is quite weighty. The optical design includes 4 elements in 4 groups, which is why the lens is called Nikkor-Q from 'Quatro '-' Four '.

Personal experience

It is very unfortunate that the huge history of the 135-current has not received its further development in the autofocus version. Nikon does not have an autofocus lens of class 135 \ 2.8, only expensive 135 \ 2.0, I would not refuse to have 135 \ 2.8 for a full frame. As for the Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1: 2.8 f = 135mm, then this just a good old-tempered lens. Due to a decent focal length and good aperture ratio, you can easily control the depth of field.

Image quality 8 \ 10 Well fixed major distortion
Aperture 5 \ 10 2.8 is a kind of border between high-aperture and 'dark' optics.
IPIG Management 6 \ 10 135 / 2.0 and 70-200 / 2.8, 70-210 / 4 deal better with this
Build quality 10 \ 10 Impeccable assembly
Price quality 6 \ 10 A little expensive for the manual, requires alteration for AI for a number of cameras
Overall rating from Radozhiva 6 \ 10 Low score due to lens age and manual focus

Here are a couple of 135 currents:

Funny, the Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 135 2.8 Non-Ai turned out to be the hardest of the above.

Conclusions

Nikon Nikkor-Q Auto 1: 2.8 f = 135mm Non-AI is a good portrait lens for full frame cameras and can be used for almost any other creative endeavor. For normal use on modern cameras, you need to perform AI conversion. On cropped cameras Nikon DX can act as a 'long' portrait lens.

In Ukraine, there are approximately 100 dollars in Ukraine, almost in good standing. Miraculous portrait portrait and act, act for art.

for 200 it is better to take half an angle or 35mm

    • keyer

Well, of course, 35mm and 135mm, what's the difference))

Arkady, I would like you to indicate their characteristics in the reviews of lenses, for example, resolution. I understand that you probably won't find it anymore, but still ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

What other characteristics besides resolution are of interest?

      • Konstantin

Sometimes it’s interesting to see a crop of 100% from the lens.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          and also?

        • Flash

I join the request for laying out at least a few 100% of the crop.

      • Andrei

        Hello Arkady.
I bought such a lens. According to the results of use, I want to say that on crop it can only be used as a portrait. When photographing a face with aperture of 2.8 from three meters, the eyes are in focus, but the ears are gone. When photographing a full-length portrait at 2.8, the result is almost the same.
One gets the impression that at such a distance and with such a diaphragm, the field of focus is 2 centimeters. Anything closer or further is not sharp. You twist the diaphragm by 4, but it doesn't help much.
The resolution of the lens is not high at any aperture and if it works for a portrait or a single flower, then the landscape is completely beyond its power. If you photograph a couple of trees, then there will be porridge.
At first I thought it was just my copy so “gentle”. Then I searched the Internet, but I could not find a single photo with normal detail.

  • Andrei

A brief comparison with lenses of the same focal length (better, worse, more like it). Because it is very difficult for you to find frankly negative reviews in the reviews, it turns out that they are all good, then it’s difficult for an amateur to decide on a purchase.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the information.

  • Sergei

Thank you very much for the very useful and interesting information, Arkady. Perhaps this site will come in handy for you in reviews of new lenses. http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=671&Camera=614&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=5&LensComp=768&CameraComp=614&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2

  • Sergei

Maybe the question is off topic, but how to relate to the fact that new lenses (and cameras) have a 10 icon in a circle of arrows, meaning that they must be recycled in 10 years. Is it worth buying expensive lenses if the manufacturer has a limited life of 10 years? And what are the reasons for such restrictions?

    • Alexander

The icon 10 in a circle with two arrows indicates the type of lens material to determine the recycling and disposal method.

  • Andrei

Thank you very much for the information. It was very pleasant to learn that completely accidentally obtained lenses can be “put into action”. :) can you tell a newbie which connecting ring needs to be purchased to use this lens on Sony SLT-A37K? If I had found the article earlier, I would probably have taken Nikon, and so 3 lenses freeze: Nikon 135mm f / 2.8 Nikkor-Q Auto Nippon Kogaku Japan Lens, Nikkor-s auto 1: 1,4 f 50, and nikkor 1: 3.5 28 mm Thanks in advance!

  • Vladislav

Arkady, in your opinion, is the quality, sharpness, and prettiness of a picture of such a Nikkor from Jupiter-37a very different? in other words, will the photos become more pleasant in all respects if you replace Jupiter-37 with Nikkor-Q Auto 135 2.8?

    • Hleb

Arkady, I'm also interested, please tell me your opinion - is it worth changing Jupiter-37a to Nikkor-Q Auto 135 2.8?

      May і Nikkor 135 / 2.8, i Jupiter 135/35.

It is very interesting how this lens will be in the role of macro with extension rings? Who tried, answer

    • Amateur photographer_

Nikkor 135 / 2.8 - not a macro, active. Not a hammer, not a dance. When bazhannі and vіdnosti rozumu - it can be victorious by the way not for the signs.

  • anonym

Thanks for. overview ! Tell me how this nikkor in sharpness with kaleinar 5? I want to buy it for portraits instead of a kaleinar.

    • Amateur photographer_

Kaleinar-5N budding. Ale win it is possible to live and give a low-contrast picture, like Yak Nikkor 135 / 2.8 by 2.8 yes, like correct colors.

  • Stas

Cool lens. It turns out interesting, I have such a copy with factory Ai (there are no signs of alteration), serial number 216444. When did the first Ai lenses appear?

  • Lima

I have both Jupiter 37-A and Nikkor 135 / 3,5 30 years ago. So “Yu” seems to me less color distortion. although it does not look as herringbone as nikor.

  • Vladimir

I sell such glass with a dandelion of Lushnikov. In appearance, the mechanics are also in perfect order. If Arkady does not mind, I will leave number 0931210903

    • Lynx

you would at least indicate a city or country at least))

  • Hermann

Arkady, which is still better? This, or newer, Nikkor 135 / 2.8 AI?

  • Dim

I bought this one, today I just performed the “conversion” with a file :-) Judging by the serial lens, the lens is 50 years old, I put it on D200. I don’t know if I chose the right place to drink, 200 - apparently, luckily. Great lens, I wonder what Nikon has been up to all this time? For me, the image is much better than modern ones, and the price is just ridiculous.

  • Dim

And what a comfortable blend! Fixed and fixed in both positions, inside glued with velvet. Interestingly, he has the same 3D pattern as the Nikkor-Q 200 or not. If so, then I would give him 10.

  • Kjack

    1. Please specify whether this lens will work in A, S, P modes on the Nikon d3100 camera if you install Lushnikov’s dandelion on it?
    2. Will the focus trap on the d3100 with a dandelion work?
    3. I read about the function of the range finder (arrows where the focus is), but I never saw them on my camera. Does such a function appear on the d3100 with a dandelion, and is it even on the d3100?
I have this lens, I read a lot of information on your resource and on others about Lushnikov’s dandelion, but since I didn’t see him live, I’m not 100% sure whether he will help me in these matters.

    4. I set myself a focusing screen with wedges (I redid it from the old camera) and because the wedges do not darken on any aperture on this lens, I concluded that the fit works for me even without a dandelion. Is it so?

P / s Thank you very much for your project! I would be very grateful for advice on my questions.

SUPER IMPRESSIVE OLD NIKON LENS BUILT LIKE A TANK
REAL NIKON. NOT LIKE NEW NIKON-TAMRON LENS

  • Andrey

Comparison of Jupiter and this. I think where you can and guess. For me personally, if you choose, then Jupiter is better - it is lighter and three times cheaper. And if anything is better, then you already need to take a modern one.

    • Simon

Ku and where is what picture? With the right that - Jupiter?

      • Andrey

Right Nicor, because the background is more blurred due to aperture 2.8, and the picture is a little more pleasant.

        • Simon

Well, I just realized that this is nikkor ... I had Jupiter and he CAN'T that is weak and little needed ... I was confused by the choice of the author of these photos who wrote that Jupiter would take himself ... A wonderful choice - a patriot, apparently ...

    • Marat

For me, the skinton on Nikon turned out somehow pale, on Jupiter it looks much nicer. Although it may depend on the monitor.

  • Alexander Skripa

I’ve been watching your reviews for a very long time, for which many thanks, I honestly looked closely at eta 135 for a long time, but the review did not impress the poet, as it were not rushed. But recently I came across examples of photos from Western and Eastern photographers. and he interested me, $ 65, the day on the way to the post office and I have it in my hands, I’ve got a file for half an hour and it’s on the D90, the first impression is a convenient focus ring with which it’s easy to focus, immediately went to experience, I’m completely satisfied with the results more than, below I will try to upload a photo (without processing), everything was shot at 2.8. For such a low price I got a cool long-focus portrait glass.

  • Alexander Skripa

  • Andrei

Hello Arkady. I am pleased to read your reviews, actually this motivated me to buy nikon 135.
    I ask for your advice.
When installing on the Nikon d7100, there was a problem, on the mount there is a protruding stump that scrolls a quarter in a circle around the mount. When installing the lens, it clamps this stump and the aperture ring stops spinning, so that you can rotate the lens until it clicks, you need to make an effort.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • Andrei

Thanks, I already figured it out, the diaphragm ring interferes.
Tell me, if you cut off the protruding part of the diaphragm ring, infinity will not be lost?

    • Jury

it will not be lost if you don’t cut the bayonet :) It is necessary to carefully remove the bayonet, take out the diaphragm ring and cut it not on the lens, then rinse it dry and put everything back together, but how to mark it - look in the internet.

      • Andrei

        Thank you!
