Review of Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED)

For the ability to review the legendary lens Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D (IF) many thanks to Dmitry. Dmitry is engaged in the sale of excellent professional lenses, his catalog can be viewed here.

Review of Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED)

Review of Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED)

The lens Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D (IF) was introduced back in February 1999 and was produced right up to 2007, since August 2007 the legendary Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D was replaced by nanocrystalline Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkorwhich, in turn, was supplemented by the Nikon N VR AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm 1: 2.8E ED.

All Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D lenses were manufactured exclusively in Japan. By the way, there are black (black) and white (gray) versions of Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D, they differ only in the frame of the body.

Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED)

Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED), front view. The lens uses SIC enlightenment.

Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D refers to professional zoom lenses, this is evidenced by the yellow edging near the front lens. The Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f / 2.8D itself is huge, it uses a 'professional' front filter diameter on 77mm, and the weight of the lens is as much as 935 grams, the lens looks simply irresistible on the camera. This whopper did not fit into my small photo bag, and I had to drag my own wardrobe trunk CL-74... Even the execution of the wardrobe trunk is top notch with a comfortable latch and velor interior trim.

The optical scheme is made on 15 elements in 11 groups, 2 element are ED glasses (Extra low dispersion) type, and one item is aspherical (PGM ASP) For comparison, the new model Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G has 3 ED, 3 APS and one element with a nanocrystalline coating.

Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D uses special SWM (Silent wave motor), which achieves very fast and quiet autofocus. Since the lens has a built-in focus motor, the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D will work at any modern Nikon digital SLR camera. The focus on the lens is really very fast. Often the name is assigned to the lens designation IFMeaning Iinternal Focusing, and talks about internal focus the lens. When focusing, the front lens remains stationary, which allows you to easily use any kind of light filter.

The lens has a focus mode switchM / AM'. In the 'M / A' mode, automatic focusing is available with a priority of manual control, which means that focus can always be corrected without switching to manual mode 'M'. This mode is very convenient to use, without switching the mode, you can focus both manually and automatically, using this focusing method is very convenient to use focus trap... In manual focus mode 'M', the focus ring rotates 90 degrees in active mode, and then simply slides in passive mode. The focusing ring is rubberized and very comfortable to use. The lens has a focusing distance scale from infinity to MDF, the minimum focusing distance is 50cm at a 70mm focal length, you can get a macro with a magnification of 1: 5.6. There is an infrared shift indicator on the lens. In general, the quality of the focusing system is at the highest level, it is a pity that there is no depth of field indicator.

Two Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED) models

Two Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f 2.8D (IF-ED) models - black and white.

When zooming, the lens trunk is slightly lengthened, the minimum lens length is available at a 50mm focal length, as the lens trunk moves in waves. The disadvantage lens is a spontaneous change in focal length under its own weight. The focal length range from 28 to 70 millimeters is very, very convenient, on full-frame cameras the lens allows you to shoot with a wide angle at 28mm and allows you to shoot in a short telephoto range at 70mm. If you use Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D on Nikon DX cropped cameras, then EGF will correspond to 42-105mm, which will not allow you to use a sufficiently wide angle of view. I do not recommend using this lens on a crop, there is a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED AF-S equivalent for this. DX Nikkor

An unusual fact is that the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D is a type D lens, that is, a lens with an aperture control ring and at the same time it has a SWM motor. Usually only AF-S G and AF D lenses are found, and it is very rare to find AF-S D lenses, you can read more about this. here.

Important: In order for the lens to start working normally on modern DLCs, you need to set the f / 22 value on the lens and click a special switch near the aperture control ring. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture from the camera, as with any modern lens, in more detail in the section about Non-G type lens.

Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D backlighting

Nikon ED SWM AF-S Nikkor 28-70mm 1: 2.8D backlighting

The lens has a maximum aperture. F / 2.8which is available over the entire range of focal lengths. Take off hand is not difficult, even though the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8 lacks an image stabilizer. Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8 is one of the 'must have' lenses, as it is included in the classic top three of a professional photographer's kit on the Nikon system: 14 (16) -24 (28), 24 (28) -70 ( 80), 70 (80) -200 (210) mm.

Image quality

Lens uses 9 blade aperture with rounded petals, which allows you to get even circles in the blur zone at any F values. The lens was very surprised by the amazing 70mm bokeh. The Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D was also a sharp, contrasting lens with good color reproduction and minimal aberration. At F2.8 inherent weak software, at 28mm F2.8 noticeably strong vignetting. The lens perfectly transfers backlight. The image quality is high.

Personal experience

Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D is a versatile lens, very fast, can serve as a reportage lens, especially useful for shooting weddings and other dynamic events.

The zoom ring of the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D seemed to me more convenient for Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G, on the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f / 2.8D the ring is narrower and closer to the camera mount. By the way, 24-70 and 28-70 have about the same weight, and he Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G seemed to me sharper. The fat Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f / 2.8D gives a slightly narrower field of view at 28mm than Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G on their 24 mm.

Instead of 24 (28) -70 I use in everyday shooting Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5D AF Nikkor... I ran a test, and as it turned out, the focus speed of my non-motorized Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5D AF Nikkor exactly the same as the very expensive professional Nikon AF-S 28-70mm f / 2.8D with a built-in motor. I'd also like to add that the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D lens is something unique, which is difficult to describe, it is better to hold the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F / 2.8D once in your hands and shoot with it.

Comments: 159, on the topic: Review of the Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED)

  • Jack

great review. Thank you for such reviews, you help in choosing the right product. You can tell which of the glasses should be selected considering the sharpness and color reproduction: this one from the review or Nikon 35-70 f2.8D. Which one would you choose? I will be grateful for the answer.

  • anonym

I have been using this lens on the d7100 since 2013. There are no alternatives to it, and it is unlikely that there will ever be - a lens that will 100% satisfy the resulting picture in any shooting situation, from reportage to landscape. I found an inaccuracy in the review text, the lens does not change the focal length under its own weight. At least three copies that I had to check before buying this was not observed at all.

    • Vyacheslav

Does the motor in your instance whistle?

      • anonym

Yes, the motor sometimes whistles. The same was with the other 3 of the same lenses. Sometimes AF twitches at medium focal lengths of 40-50mm and cannot grasp, but it doesn’t cause any particular inconvenience, I shoot almost always at 28 or 70, medium focal lengths are not very necessary.

    • Georgy

It is strange, why there is no alternative and will not be? Even the article has written a bunch of lenses, which are an alternative.
      17-55
      24-70 (different models)

Why are they not an alternative?

      • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, the user has in mind alternatives with the same “pattern”.

  • Edward

Arkady, thanks for your reviews. I have this lens very pleased although the non-working diaphragm stuck it about 5-5,6, and I’m shooting it. I can’t find the diaphragm for this lens, everyone can have a broken question or who is already unprofitable to fix it, I’m ready to buy spare parts or someone can tell me where to buy the diaphragm, I will be very grateful.

  • Ilya

Here, as promised, I made test shots, under the same conditions, with lenses:
    Nikon 35-70mm f / 2.8D AF
    Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED)
    Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S
The order according to the senior officer, in folders another (arbitrary)
Each lens was shot at aperture value of 2.8 3.5 4.5
Camera Nikon D700 aperture priority mode, the rest is in the machine.
What is interesting, the assumption where is which lens, the opinion is where the best figure, etc. Particularly interesting is the analysis from the participants in the discussion who consider that 28-70 gives a better picture than 24-70 gives.

      • Ilya

But there are 3 folders with photos :)

        • KalekseyG

Yes already found. But as there was an assumption to find which of them who can not, the difference is visible but not dramatic. All lenses are high enough class

    • Dmitriy

      Folder 3: Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S
      Folder 2: Nikon AF-S 28-70mm F2.8D (IF-ED)
      Folder 1: Nikon 35-70mm f / 2.8D AF

Actually, I meant a portrait, a photo of people, not a branch :) Ilya, but thanks anyway.

    • Pavel Chertalev

Thank you very much Ilya for the test. The result was obvious to me. I certainly cannot guess where is which glass. I myself did such tests by comparing paired shots with 24-70 with 35 fix 1.4 taken with the same parameters and I just can't guess blindly. I don’t believe in any magic of old lenses and the concept of “lens drawing” for me only means the nature of the background blur (bokeh).

    • peter

The main thing is of course the photographer. But I agree with Dmitry I recently came across an article
      https://periscope.com.ua/osnovy-fotografii/mikrokontrast-naibolshaya

Here it is written and explained about what Dmitry says

  • Ilya

Yes, only 24-70 and 28-70 mixed up :)

      Q.E.D)))))))))

  • Gennady

I have one problem with this glass, you won’t believe it, I’m shooting it and BB, it exposes the camera to an eerie one, it takes away pictures in a purple tint, then it’s greenish, that's the story. and according to the sensations and quality of the images, the lens is simply amazing, in the region of 50mm fr, it gives a very good volume in the pictures, of course not 85 / 1,4, but still it pleases. It remains to deal with white balance, on other lenses the device fulfills everything correctly. What can you advise Arkady? Attached a picture below, rate BB.

    • Vkitor

BB exposes the photographer, not glass. At least read a book, the instruction is called.

      • Gennady

Read carefully! "It remains to deal with the white balance, on other lenses the device works out everything correctly"

  • Anatoly

Great lens! Unique very neat pattern, like his peer 80-200 \ 2,8. I use modern ones for work. For creativity I use old people.

  • Pokekmon

    All the good days!
    I choose between used Nikkor 28-70 / 2.8 and used Sigma 24-70mm 1: 2.8 EX DG.
I heard that both Nikkor and this Sigma have motors dying from time to time, or rather a resource is being developed.
How to determine this? How to understand, upon examination, that the motor is running out of gas?
I had only non-motorized windows, so I ask)
And how much will motor repair cost in a good expensive service?
Which of these glasses has more reliable motors?
This kind of sigma is still being produced and you can pick up glasses that are not very ushatched, but with Nikkor it is more difficult - as I understand it, you can find something alive only for 40 thousand rubles.

  • zivert

Here is the mystery of nature. I got this lens in excellent condition a couple of years ago. He took the place of 24-70, who died along with the D700th in the Maldives (drowned).
And I took it after this particular review for a bundle with the D750. Could not get enough. Such a glass!
But it was not there. Everything went fine at first. Then the glitches went. That is, autofocus, then no. At the same time, I sinned for constructiveness and wear. Sometimes you shake around the bayonet - a focus appears. But mostly - fuck! All this was terribly annoying when shooting. And so I can’t stand it when something is junk, but here ... I asked for the carcass - it seemed to help. But not for long. Again the glitches have gone. I wanted to sell it, but my hand wouldn’t rise. It was painfully good. I packed it in a trunk and put it on the shelf.
On the occasion, took 24-70 from the hands. Everything is fine. Two weeks in Bhutan and Tai worked like clockwork.
And today the 810th came to me !!! Screwed 24-70. It's okay. The beauty!!! And then I remembered about the old man. He took it out of the wardrobe trunk, loaded it onto the carcass - the trick chirps! No problem! Pestnya !!!
Only now I sit and think that two such glasses are too much. Which one to leave - I don't know.
    What do you say, professionals?
By the way, I didn't make friends with 750. After 700, I couldn't get used to it. Here's something somewhere ... I don't understand myself ... But I picked up the 810th and it seemed to me that this is the reincarnation of my 700th Nikanor, who died in the depths of the sea !!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. 750 is not a replacement for 700
      2. continuation of the 700th - 8xx line
      3. I personally would leave 24-70 to work, sooner or later a motor will die at 28-70, there is the same motor as the 80-200 mk4, which was discontinued due to problems with the motor. Masters say that dust gets into the motor and it begins to creak and jam. The SC will recommend replacing for a lot of money, but experienced craftsmen will be able to simply clean it.

      • Pokekmon

Arkady, and if you choose between used Nikkor 28-70 / 2.8 and relatively fresh used Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG?
What would you choose for yourself?
If you buy used hands from strangers.

  • Pokekmon

I decided to watch 28-70 / 2.8 at the flea markets in Japan and became interested in how much this glass can cost in the HARD OFF network I know.
The average cost is approximately $ 400-600 depending on the completeness and condition.
Another thing surprised me - the number of proposals for glasses 28-70 / 2.8 and 80-200 / 2.8.
There are really a lot of them. In total, the percentage of offers for them is approximately the same as offers for whale glasses of different years and much more than offers of glasses of the same class from Nikon's competitors put together (!). 80-200 / 2.8 can even cost $ 300. But all the cheap glasses 28-70 / 2.8 and 80-200 / 2.8 have a problem in the SWM motor - it jams, makes noise, jerks. In short, AF is difficult and the motor will die soon. Glasses after s / c Nikon with a replaced motor and / or after cleaning it and in a complete box set can already cost $ 600 and rarely up to $ 800.
Interestingly, what about the Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG or 70-200 / 2.8 with the reliability of the motors?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Our 28-70 is very rare, with Sigma motors - as luck would have it, on a 24-70 sigma with an HSM motor, the speed controller usually flies and the lens becomes a bullet - rotates the ring in different directions at the speed of light, while, of course, it cannot focus: )

      • Pokekmon

Arigato :-) there is something to think about.

Does the 80-200 have a motor? I thought there was a screwdriver.

      • Alexey

MK 4 has a screwdriver for the rest.

        • peter

MK 3 is a fairly large selection, but MK 4 should not be taken then.
It is a pity that this is not the case with 28-70, everything is with the motor (

  • Yaroslav

Damn (((and I already thought there was an alternative 24-70 ... but it was not there ... and from 80-200 it also disappears ... the new one I can afford to roar that 24-120 f4! Probably all the same I will do so

  • ы

    Infa for thought.
Replacing a jammed motor in Moscow time on Nikkor will cost 25.5-28.6 thousand Russian rubles, although there are those who immediately charge 30k :(

    • ы

      Refers to 28-70 / 2.8

    • Pokekmon

      to s:
I have another infa - a refarbished (factory-restored motor) will cost ~ 450-500 bucks in the purchase, and a new one simply cannot be obtained ... well, perhaps in Japan. And the repair itself 80-200 / 2.8D or 28-70 / 2.8D will cost 700 bucks including replacement of the engine.
Considering that used 28-70 / 2.8Ds now cost between 550-600 bucks in supposedly good condition (yeah, not a bit and not painted, and my grandfather had been standing on the mezzanine all his life), then given the sudden repair, the total cost will be ~ 1200-1300 bucks, which is no longer appetizing.

      • Sergei

Found in Moscow a master who solves this problem. It’s not about a motor breakdown, but about mounting an electronics. Over time, something breaks up and leaves, he said this is a common problem with these lenses. Repair cost me 2000 rubles in November 2017.

  • Arseniy

    Gentlemen!
I rack my brains over the choice for the d800.
    Subject or tamron 24-70mm f2.8 vc (mk1).

The first already used on the d600.
Portraits are bombed, autofocus is instant, sharpness is a razor with a touch of software. I don’t know how to describe it better.
But in the report, he was suffering from a narrow wide angle. + There is no gum on the mount.

Tamron was on d2x. I can’t say anything, maybe crop. Harshly, perhaps.

Perhaps someone has both lenses / both on FF and can say about the focus speed and the difference in the size?
    // Arkady come!

    • Arseniy

(at the same cost and condition-30k evergreen)

      • Arseniy

I also consider Sigma, it costs a third cheaper, when is it af?

      • DmitryK

Arseny, these glasses are on Avito for the price all the same more expensive than 30k.
I lick my lips at him, but the need to replace the motor scares me. Sooner or later it will happen and it happens to everyone. A foreman in official repair at Kurskaya said that there are no new engines to replace in 28-70 / 2.8 and will not be. If only on ebee to search and order. Refarbished (restored) is only being put on now. and how long it will last - xs. Even the master could not answer.

        • Arseniy

My question doesn’t even touch closely on the previous thread on how lenses die :)
I agree, an important aspect, and in vain I wrote something about prices, since I did not want to address the issue of quality / accuracy of autofocus, etc.

Interested in considering a spherical lens in a vacuum, with clean lenses and autofocus, which works within the margin of error regarding the idea, to the question of AF speed and sharp-bokeh picture quality.

  • Eugene

The lens does not tolerate backlight, loses contrast.
    And slowly focuses.
    Therefore sold

    • anonym

He will focus like a bitch. Second after 24-70 / 2.8
With a contrast in the sunset back had no problems.
      Sold only because of 28mm
      (idiot come true)

  • Novel

The lens is simply gorgeous. I took B \ y. naturally whistled. Got courage, watched the video, read it. I went through the lens and glued the electronics to a new adhesive tape (I had to do this several times, the assembly disassembly is very dreary). Everything began to work like new. But it was on the D90, now acquired the D610 and that’s bad luck. On the D610, autofocus does not want to work. Rearranging everything works fine on the D90.
I can’t understand what the problem is. The second time there is no desire to disassemble it.
I take pictures in manual mode.

    Who has any assumptions ?????

  • Alexander Vasilyevich

I bought this miracle just the other day, took it very inexpensively. I knew right away that AF wasn’t working and would have to focus manually. The first tests confirmed the high quality of the optics. I believe
that the Beast is my best variable focus lens, and I have a lot of optics. The center is sharp
at all focal and any apertures. The edges are worse, but not critical. Describe the picture in words
I find it difficult, I can only say that I want to watch and watch the files of the "Beast", which cannot be said about many
other photo lenses. The picture is beautiful, lively. Very pleased with the purchase.
And now about the sad. When I bought, I hoped that it would be possible to revive AF. Unfortunately, the service center
Nikon in Moscow made a sad diagnosis: The power board needs to be replaced. The service period is over, the spare part is not supplied. People!!! Maybe someone has a broken "Beast" fit for
    spare parts? Let's agree!

  • Pokemon

    Just from RetroFest in Sokolniki.
I managed to compare 28-70 / 2.8D and 35-70 / 2.8D and I can say that the picture is really similar, but 28-70 / 2.8D conveys the same thing more elegantly than 35-70 / 2.8D.
None finally managed to see and feel the difference between them.
35-70 / 2.8D two copies of different series have already been bought, while 28-70 / 2.8 is still one.
But, to hell with her, with a toad, this lens is an artist, a masterpiece. He's beautiful and worth his money. And I will still try to buy myself one in the mint condition. Money is paper.

  • Ksenia

Hello! Tell me, is this lens compatible with the D600 carcass?

    • KalekseyG

      And why not.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      yes compatible

  • Ivan

Thanks for the review. I just wanted to ask, the sharpness is gaining up to f / 8, how does this sometimes happen? The picture is a picture, but for normal event recording I really would not want to close to large values.

    • Sergey

I shoot with this lens for only a couple of weeks, but very much to get my hand on Nikon.
So, at 4 it is already quite sharp, at 6.3 in general each hair is visible.

  • Eugene

Hello! I decided to add my point of view about 28-70 ... .. in the spring I bought myself a D 810, before that I shot D300 and 17-55, and took care of the average full-frame zoom ... ... the choice fell on 28-70, I got it in Moscow, according to an ad on AVITO. For 30 rubles, my friend went to the address, looked at it and took it ... .. I was very lucky, the lens itself is like new, autofocus does not whistle, nothing twitches, everything is just great, the drawing is amazing ... I can not say anything about 000 -24, I didn’t hold it in my hands, but I saw it in my work, a friend shoots it, also an amazing thing, but why be surprised? this is NIKON

    • Valery A.

Hello. We share your joy from the purchase, but you said almost nothing about the lens (except for the used price and the fact that it does not whistle), it is more important to hear - how is it compared to 17-55 (on d300), is there a difference in the pictures?

  • Alexander

Tell me, please, does this lens have autofocus from a screwdriver on film cameras, for example on the F70?

    • Pokemon

      This is a motor lens.
The camera is old, you need to check how it works with motor lenses.

  • Sergey

I purchased this glass as the first on a new system for myself (I was a shoemaker, was).
It weighs enough, it looks shocking, especially with a complete hood, and why is a complete trunk just worth it !!!
The picture is amazing, the bokeh is bold and dense, no 24-70 gives this! Autofocus is fast, but not instant.
There are kosyachki in the picture, but it should be borne in mind that here the lens is almost 20 years old.
I drag it without taking it off, although other glasses have arrived.

    • Pokemon

The Canon 28-70 / 2.8 had a similar carrying case in the kit. The lens has a really amazing picture.

      • Pokemon

I wrote a picture about Nikkor 28-70 / 2.8. I also own it, very satisfied.

  • Oleg

Hello, I looked at this lens at the OLH from 12 to 14 yew. UAH Tell me how to correctly understand whether the motor is pinged, and the approximate life of the motor of this lens in intensive use. As far as I understand, if there is a whistle, then a kerdyk will come soon, and buying something to poke around is not hunting. Thanks to everyone who answers. I also appeal to Arkady, I would like to see your review on Sigma art 18-35 f.1.8.

    • Alexey

I would look more to see if there is any haze of the front gluing. and the motor can be replaced.

      • Pokemon

There are no new 28-70 / 2.8 engines for a long time.
There are restored ones. Repair depending on the neglect of the case - from purging / cleaning to replacing the motor. Objective dreary in assembly and disassembly, not every master will take it. This is about the same crap as on Canon 28-70 / 2.8L.
The cost of repair with replacement of the motor, purge-cleaning can be $ 300-350 and not every master will undertake it (and not everyone should be trusted).
That is why, 28-70 / 2.8D with mounted motors are sold for a maximum of $ 200-250.
And they are still bought for repairs.

        • Alexey

I repair everything myself. and the motor would be found somewhere, I think. but so far there was no need for that.

  • Olga

And yet the question remained open for me: 24-70, 28-70 or 35-70? The price category is different, so is it possible to save or overpay for a more beautiful picture?

    • Pokemon

      They are all different.
35-70 / 2.8d it is desirable to watch the last episodes. Many tired and no 28mm, but often it is needed. Not every 35-70 / 2.8d will master the d600-610-750-780 matrix. This will have to be chosen.
The picture for 35-70 / 2.8d and 28-70 / 2.8d is different, you need to shoot it and look at it and compare it carefully.
Here the question is why to take them. It's a pity for work - they are less and less in good condition and the cost is constantly growing.

      • Olga

I need such a focus mainly for studio work, although I don't exclude street photography. Unfortunately, there is no way to try both. Only if you both buy them. )) That is why the question of comparing these three lenses arose
