2/92 Lens Overview

For the opportunity 2/92 lens overview many thanks to Vadim Gadzira.

UPDATED: more info here.

The lens from this review 2/92 is projection lens from the overhead projector 'LETI 60' / 'LETI 60M'. Based instructions for LETI 60M it can be seen that the optical scheme consists of 6 elements in 4 groups.

Important: Photos are signed as Helios 2/92, this is a kind of mistake, do not pay attention to it. Details are in the comments.

Lens view 2/92

View of the 2/92 lens at different focusing distances.

Lens does not have an iris device. This means that the aperture of the lens is always fully open. The lens has a good aperture F / 2.0due to the fact that the diaphragm cannot be closed on a sunny day, at ISO 100 and 1 \ 8000c excerpts I received overexposed pictures on my D700.

Two parts of the Helios 92 2 lens

Two parts of a 2/92 lens. A wormhole (left) and a focusing spindle (right) are visible to create focus.

Also at the lens no focus ring in the usual sense of the word. But the lens can be focused using a primitive spiral wormhole on two parts of the lens. To mount the lens on a modern digital camera, you need to redo it a bit. An adapter ring KP-42 \ N was put on my copy on the back of the lens, while the lens was able to focus from about 1.5 meters to infinity on Nikon cameras, although there is a significant flight for infinity.

The internally blackening of the frame is very poor, which makes it difficult to use the 2/92 as a regular lens. The lens easily catches 'sun hares', 'sunny rainbows', loses contrast in backlight. 2/92 has a strange yellow-orange enlightenment, which makes the image yellow-green, with the so-called 'Soviet bottle glass' tint. Auto white balance the camera slightly corrects the colors, in general, it turns out something interesting and vintage.

Enlightenment 2/92

Enlightenment 2/92

Due to the long focal length of 90mm and the fast F / 2.0 aperture, it is very easy to achieve a shallow depth of field with the lens. Due to the optical design of 'Biotar', an interesting bokeh pattern can be obtained. The lens turned out to be very sharp. In my opinion, the artistic component of the image of this 2/92 can easily compete with Helios-40-2 85mm F1.5. On the other hand, the lens is very picky about the light sources in the frame.

Sample photos on 2/92

All sample photos taken on 2/92 and the camera Nikon D700... Due to the fact that the lens is not intended for ordinary photography, the contrast of the lens suffers greatly, and the unfinished picture looks very poor in most cases. In this review, the photographs have been improved. Mostly the contrast is enhanced when converting from RAW -> JPEG. Reduced the size of images to 3MP and printed data from EXIF.

Personal experience

Despite the dips in image quality, I really liked 2/92. The lens can be found at a very ridiculous price and, having worked a little over the alteration for modern cameras, you can get excellent art photos with a unique pattern.

Conclusions

The 2/92 projection lens turned out to be very interesting. It can be used for creative purposes. The lens requires rework for use on modern cameras.

A review of another modification of this lens has appeared on Radozhiv - F = 92 1: 2.

It looks weird, but it's a mockup.

    • Alexander

Anatoly! I was very interested in your experience with this 92/2 lens. I have 3 of them. My experiments on installing a digital camera yielded attractive results in the sense of optical design, but completely unthinkable in terms of design. I would like to find some more acceptable technical solution. Do not share the details?
      Thank you.
It is advisable - to throw a copy in a personal, this site has wandered off.

  • Sergei

I still appreciate such a lens, it’s very sharp, sometimes I set the diaphragm out of black paper 1 cm in diameter, then sharpness is generally throughout the frame. The hue is of course special.

  • Sergei

I forgot to add enlightenment is not yellow- (sort of like on helioss 44), there is no hood either, but the color of the photo is still greenish. At Zenith, the sharpness seemed more than on Helios 44.

  • Sergei

There is an interesting object for experiments. They say that they get excellent portraits. Luminosity 1,8. Resolution in the center 100, edges -60. It is called 35 KP 1,8 / 65… ..70..75.

  • Sergei

The adapter is bolted to the outer part of the helicoid taken from the "Helios 44-2". The inner part of the helicoid flange enters the lens unit 35 KP and is clamped by the lens back fixing nut. To prevent the lens from jumping off, an L-shaped plate must be screwed on the inside of the helicoid. That's it, the lens can be mounted on the camera.

  • Kirill

I have two lenses from the projectors Leti. Both are different and not like in the review. The first 64 years, with a red letter P, but enlightenment is yellow on both sides. The second 72 years, the enlightenment on the external lens is blue. Now I tried on to the cropped canon, the first infinity does not, the focus ends at about 4 meters. The second has infinity, I'm going to adapt it. But the flu is very small. Do you think it is better to simply reduce the hole, or does it still make sense to adapt a normal diaphragm to it?

  • Kirill

Everything, the adapter is ready, the lens is in place. I refused the diaphragm, because I will use it in low light conditions (for other lenses) for portraits. With a native helicoid, surprisingly convenient and fast focusing. The lens is gorgeous. One of the best I have

  • Andrei

Did you use the adapter with or without a lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Without a lens, otherwise I would indicate the presence of the latter.

  • Igor

Please tell me how to modify it? What and how to cope? It’s just that I don’t really shy about it (I didn’t understand this spectrum), but I photograph cool) So please tell me what needs to be done to put it on the Kenon 650D so that it works. I will be very grateful for the answer =)

If you have a lens with a native helicoid, then the whole alteration is to attach the back of the lens (in fact, the helicoid itself) to the m42-canon adapter. I do not advise planting on glue. It is better to carefully weld or make an adapter (on a lathe) from the thread on the helicoid to the thread m42. If there is time, I will make and lay out photos of my own.

  • Igor

Please tell us about the focusing process and what are spiral wormholes on two parts of the lens. Interested)

  • Marat

Today, on a flea market, a peasant asked for this miracle 70r. Could not refuse :)
My copy with a helicoid, in the sense of not just a lens block. All was dirty. Dismantled, washed, noticed that it is very similar to Biotar. So I found this review. I’m thinking about how to attach it to my mirrorless mirror and how to put the diaphragm into the center of the lens. By the way, I compared it with Jupiter-11. Jupiter's HA in comparison with this lens is simply unbearable.

    • Irina

Marat, share how you managed to make it out, please! Otherwise I examined it from all sides, there are no ideas ... I have the following problem: the rear lens floats, does not fix and I do not know exactly where it should be, I want to disassemble and fix it.

      • Marat

Lenses are fixed in the lens block by rings. These rings can be carefully unscrewed with a caliper (in your case, tighten, that is, you need to twist clockwise).

    Good afternoon, Arkady!
    You write:
“My copy was fitted with a KP-42 \ N adapter ring on the rear of the lens, while the lens was able to focus from about 1.5 meters to infinity on Nikon cameras, although there is a significant flight over infinity.”

And the question is - how to define this “flight beyond infinity”?

  • Jury

I have a similar design made by some crazy handles from the Helios-44 case, in which the Leica Elmarit P-CF 150 / 2.8 is strengthened
Catastrophically sharp in the center, it will be softer across the field. When you close the “zanzal” diaphragm, the field sharpness increases, but a very interesting vignetting appears.

An interesting lens! :) Cheap, but the quality pleases :)

This is a planar, not helios. I recently had such a very interesting client. I’m thinking about adapting it to the donor’s body.

    • anonym

      +1
Of course, the optical scheme is called "planar", and in no way "biotar". Some German lenses with a planar optical design were produced under the Biotar brand.
Some Soviet lenses with a planar optical design were produced under the Helios brand.
But this, of course, does not give Arkady the right to give each semi-glued symmetrical projection lens the Helios trademark - if only because this trademark does not belong to Arkady.
The lens must be named as indicated on it, namely “F-92 2/92”. This is a semi-glued symmetrical projection lens with anti-reflection coating and a "Planar" type optical scheme.

F-92 is not the only lens with a planar-like optical scheme, symmetric schemes have been widely used in film projectors, here is a list of lenses with the same optical scheme:
      W-26
      W-32
      W-53
      Ж54

The name Helios 2/92 has long become a household name, and no grumbling about copyright will no longer help here, in Google, dial (if not in the ban) everything will become clear, I have Helios 2/92 a very good lens with awesome bokeh.

    • Rodin

Perhaps his bokeh is really the best. Not fanatically twisted, like the G-40, but soft and very pleasant.

  • Alexey

Who can help with instructions on how to put this miracle on canon?

  • Rodin

This is just a gorgeous lens! After a radical blackening of the insides, my tired and pretty lined sample took pride of place in the field-travel photo bag!

  • Rodin

    And more

  • Alexander

Also sometimes indulge in this lens as a portrait. A very good result. Only a hole 2.0 depth of field makes uchen narrow. I had to insert a thin black plastic between the lenses with a hole of about 18mm. The aperture has become at 3.2 but the depth of field has become wider. Yellows a little, weak chrome. Pretty good resolution at the same time. Here is an example frame.

    • Glory

I wonder. In which place to put the diaphragm in front of the rear lens?

  • Alexander

A joke of course. This is a strong crop, and the whole frame is lower.

  • Claudio

Hi, I would just like to add my little contribute to this page .. I think this lens is fabulous, and they are too little information about it on internet ... I feel really lucky I've got it for cheap :)

  • Alexander

My copy is mounted in the case of Helios 44. It looks primitive so far. The disadvantages are manual focus and…. it is difficult to change the diaphragm. The rest is just merit. Who is interested https://yadi.sk/d/hOARvOblkZCSt You can view. As far as possible I will add.

    • kotofei

Sound what kind of helios (44M, 44-2, 44M-5, etc.) was used. Give plz a photo of the structure, if you need to turn - it's interesting to look at the drawing. Thanks in advance

      • Rodion

Need. Gelik needs 44m or 44m-X. Turning is necessary - 92/2 is noticeably thicker. He needs to erode the walls. And the helicoid, obviously, also needs to be bored if possible.

        • Alexander

But isn’t it easier to make a helicoid from a brass pipe, and not transfer to it another, no less good lens?
