Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D - an excellent amateur DSLR camera, it is very easy to operate, and advanced automatic shooting programs can almost completely complete all tasks of the photographer for him. Usually the Canon 600D comes with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.6-5.6 IS II lens, or a similar class 18-55 lens, such a kit is called a 'kit'. This review presents only the Canon 600D body itself - no lens.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Canon 600D is the huge swivel display. The camera display has 3 in diagonally and more than one million points that form the image. The same display can be found in cameras. Canon 650D, 550D, 60D. View the menu and footage on the display is quite convenient.

The camera has a sensor on 18 megapixel  and can create an image of 5184 at 3456 points. The same matrix can be found in cameras Canon 550D.7D 60D, 650Dbut u 650D in fact, a slightly modified matrix is used, but when working at low ISOs, this can hardly be noticed. 18 megapixels is much more than is needed for amateur photography. The huge number of megapixels creates very heavy image files, for example, RAW files from a Canon 600D camera weigh from 18 to 36MB, and high-quality JPEG files from about 2 to 15MB. You can shoot in JPEG Normal mode to save space. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, in most cases megapixels do not play the most important role in image quality, you can read more in the section 'Battle of Megapixels'.

Canon 600D can shoot at speeds up to 3.7 fps, in some sources you can find information about 3,9 fps. Almost 4 frames per second is more than enough for amateur photography. Truth, frame buffer the camera is very small, and is only 6 pictures in JPEG format. If you enable the noise reduction function at high ISOs, the number of pictures in the buffer when shooting in JPEG format is reduced to only 2. When shooting in RAW format, the camera can only buffer 9 frames, and 4 frames with additional functions turned on. Roughly speaking, only a maximum of 2 seconds of continuous shooting can be squeezed out of the camera using maximum RAW (CR2) quality. By the way, RAW files have 14-bit color depth, which is very important when processing raw material. For 'thoughtful' shooting, speed is not important at all, personally I still use the camera Nikon D40 whose limit is 2.5 k / s.

Canon 600D is a fairly new camera, it was released in February 2011, so it has modern features, settings and capabilities that are in demand today. Of course, the Canon EOS 600D has a Live View mode that can be activated at the touch of a button. In mode live view you can customize the display of the framing grid, which simplifies the shooting, the grid helped me to capture the winter landscape in the photographs from this review.

Of course, the Canon 600D is able to shoot video and at the same time allows you to control all the necessary settings for the video. I noticed that many people buy the Canon 600D precisely because of its excellent video shooting capabilities: 1920 × 1080 at 30 or 25 or 24 frames per second. Who does not need Terabytes of Full HD video, you can use simpler formats: 1280 by 720 or 640 by 480. In the latter two formats, you can shoot at 50 or 60 frames per second and make a 'slow-motion' effect. Videos can be shot for up to 30 minutes, or until the memory card is full, or until the video file becomes larger than 4GB. The camera can use SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. In the review, I used the Canon 600D with a 32GB SDHC card without any problems.

Canon 600D can use range ISO 100 to 6400 and expand it to 12.800. This is a good indicator. I do not recommend using high ISOs without noise reduction. I don’t shoot on ISO 6400 even on full-frame cameras, not to mention the matrix of the Canon 600D.

The camera has a 9-point focusing system, the same system is used on many other Canon cameras:  400D, 450D, 500D, 1100D. Please note that Canon 650 and 60D there is a focusing system distinguishable from the Canon 600D, the differences are in the number of cross-shaped points, which are higher in older models 60D, 650D. Auto focus speed is more dependent on the lens than on the camera. When writing a review, the auto focus system performed well.

For measuring exposure thrown out 63-zone sensor... In general, you need to get used to the operation of the exposure meter in each camera. For amateurs, I'll write that in automatic modes the camera determines the exposure quite well. But in difficult situations, for example, when shooting winter landscapes, where bright areas predominate, the exposure meter was a little 'lying'. In general, for measurement exposure and auto settings white balance no complaints.

Features:

  1. Automatic mode is called 'A +', which implies new technology and new algorithms for the camera in automatic mode. I have not used this green zone, I usually shoot in one of the modes A, S, M, which behave the same on all cameras.
  2. The camera has an interesting video function that can connect short clips together and add music to them.
  3. The camera uses a DIGIC 4 processor, the same as in the previous version 550D
  4. The focusing system has only one cross-shaped focusing point in the center. This point allows you to focus on lenses with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6
  5. When focusing, the built-in flash can work in strobe mode and highlight objects that you want to focus on. I do not like this feature.
  6. The camera can work with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1 \ 4000 seconds, with a minimum flash excerpt is 1 \ 200 seconds
  7. Canon 600D uses a pentamirror, while the optical viewfinder covers only 95% of the field of view, this sometimes leads to the appearance of extra detail at the edges of the frame. In Live View, coverage is 100% - what we see is what will be in the picture
  8. In Live View, you can turn on the histogram and framing grid and zoom in any area of the image up to 10 times
  9. Canon 600D can remotely control external flashessuch as the Speedlite 320EX and 270EX II
  10. The battery of the camera is not enough for about 500 shots. The number of shots per battery charge is highly dependent on a number of settings.
  11. Canon 600D has auto adjustment function vignetting (peripheral lighting), but does not have distortion correction functions and HA.
  12. Auto ISO takes into account the focal length of the lens and selects the desired shutter speed to take sharp pictures when the camera is in the hands. When I used a 50mm lens, the camera in auto ISO mode did not lower shutter speed below 1 \ 60s.

The main differences between Canon 550D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 600D has a rotatable display
  • Cameras have slightly different settings, especially in post photo processing
  • Canon 600D can shoot with the aspect ratio of 3: 2, 4: 3, 16: 9, 1: 1
  • Canon 600D can control external flash
  • Canon 600D knows how to compose a video series
  • Canon 600D adds DISP button and sensor disappears near viewfinder

The cameras are very similar, the Canon 600D is mostly more suitable for video due to its rotatable display.

Photo on Canon 600D

Photo on Canon 600D

The main differences between Canon 650D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 650D uses a modified 18MP 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
  • Canon 650D has a unique phase focus sensor in live view and when shooting video
  • Canon 650D has a unique touch screen display
  • Canon 650D uses the new DIGIC 5 processor, Canon 600D uses DIGIC 4
  • Canon 650D doubles its ISO limit
  • With the Canon 650D, the shooting speed reaches 5 fps compared to 3.9 fps with the Canon 600D
  • The Canon 650D uses a different focusing system, although the focus points are the same as the Canon 600D, but the Canon 650D is all cruciform
  • Canon 650D uses a built-in stereo microphone for video
  • Typically, the Canon 650D comes with a Canon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and the Canon 600D with a Canon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II

In a manner Canon 650D is a revolutionary camera, but in general, the quality of images can be expected at a level Canon 600D.

All sample photos in this review were shot on a lens Canon EF 50mm F1.8II.

Hello, please tell me what is happening: the Canon 600d camera doesn’t work with the automatic shooting mode because the flash blinks as needed, but the photos turn out dark as if the flash is late. The firmware did not help. And I can’t use the service because it is not in my country. And the camera is very dear to me.

    • Alexey

The first question that arose is at what distance from the subject are you shooting and which of the automatic modes do you use?

from personal experience: everything is ok up to 3 meters, more - the built-in flash is no longer enough for normal exposure.

  • igor

the camera is excellent for the second year running with it - pleases

  • Vladimir!

This camera has high-speed synchronization with an external flash 1 \ 4000 s!
So, using an external flash for daytime portraits in this camera is possible without any problems !!! Why didn’t you write about this very important fact!

    • Novel

What nonsense are you talking about!

  • Ira

Help determine the model of the camera:
either Nikon D3200 18-55mm VR II Kit Black
either Nikon D3200 18-105 VR Kit
or Canon EOS 600D 18-55 DC III
    or Nikon D5100 18-55VR Kit

    • Lynx

      you - anyone.
but the canon d650 is better.

  • anonym

Tell me how to turn on a histogram on a 600d ??

    • Lynx

      On the menu.

  • Eugene

guys, completely confused, help! there is a d300s body for 9500, there is a 600d with a whale (for the first time, that's it) for 7000 with a bunch of gifts like a tripod-flash bag, and there is a 60d (body) with a price of 9000. What would you take? phot is not the first: there was a dormouse a300 for a long time, I learned wisdom on it, I took pictures mainly on aperture priority, sold because of the noise on the ISO above 600, and it was outdated, then I took d3200, sold it a month later - the functionality even after the old dormouse was not impressed , small in size, the white balance was always walking, although I liked it. Now sometimes I take a kenon 650 d from my brother, I consider him a good photo.
in short, what to take for yourself? childhood dream d300s, ken 60d or 600d (due to price and whale for the first time)? help, I do not know))))

    • Michael

Canon's whale is pretty crap. I wouldn't even look at him. If there is no money for glass, then the point is to consider the body? Budget issue. If 600d suits you in terms of functionality, why not take it? Also, money for glasses will remain - you can see something interesting instead of a whale.

      • Eugene

I calculated that in a couple of months the first glass should be taken less or less, at least 18-105 or 50mm 1.8d, while I can use 650d, my brother will not be offended))))

        • Michael

In terms of functionality, d300 is ahead of the rest of the planet (especially from those indicated). But if you shoot a lot of people, I would take Canon.

  • srdjan

    Canon EOS 600D + Helios 44m-4 58mm f / 2

  • Alexander

And tell me why according to the site dxomark.com (in terms of overall assessment, color depth, DD, and noise level) canon 600d, canon 60d lose nikon d3100? It turns out that there is no point in switching to these cameras?

  • Alexander

Tell me, is it worth switching from Nikon d3100 to Canon 600d or Canon60d?

    • Anonymous # 2

Alexander, why does the D3100 not suit you?

      • Alexander

At 3100, I do not like the resolution of the screen, the short duration of the video (10 minutes). and I also want a less noisy matrix.

    • Rodion

At 60d, there is probably a point. The camera is higher, like a competitor d7000 kind of like. But management, of course, is weird, I don’t like it.
600d - the same 60d, but simpler, with ordinary amateur control. The matrix is old - the d3100 will be no better as a whole. But canon - with all the advantages in terms of using manuals. And the folding screen is an extremely convenient thing. Shooting without it is suffering.

      • Alexander

But what about the nikon d5100, or is it better to save up and buy the d7000?

        • Denis

at D7000 the screen is not folding (if it is important)
and Canon believes colors are better for portraiture

          • Anonymous # 2

Only Kenon merges both Iso and the dynamic range. Yes, and ergonomics still have to get used to.

            • Rodion

As a canon user, I can say the same about nikon about ergonomics - you'll have to get used to it, even when switching from 3100 to 7k.
Well, in general - the D7000 camera is higher in class than 600d.
See for yourself - either you need mythical ISO and DD, which can be made up by RAW and aperture ratio, finer and more advanced control (D7000), or you just need convenient work with manuals in the absence of any bells and whistles (600d).
There is no point in changing D3100 to 5100 at all, IMHO - it was an awl for soap.
PS We managed to get used to Nikon and get hold of glasses - take 7000. If not, if you plan to shoot with old stuff, take Canon.
All these "skins", "dynamic ranges", synthetic tests are bullshit, to be honest. In reality, there is no difference, IMHO.
I only felt the difference between 600d and 6d in ISO workers, but I didn’t feel the difference with 7000d.

              • Alexander

Thank you for sending on an approximate path, now it will be clear what exactly to look at)))

  • Novel

Arkady, I read a review about Kenon 600 and Nikon 5200, I got confused about which one you would recommend for landscapes, people, both have their own troubles, but you need the best option with good or excellent picture quality, and to make it more practical, thanks))

    • Valery A.

In fact, it is believed that the equal of the Canon 600d is d5100, 5200 means more abruptly. If your goals are landscape, people (portraits?) And excellent image quality, in addition to FA, you should pay attention to lenses, probably to fixes.

      • Alexey

When I selected my first DSLR, I settled on Kenon for several reasons.
for M42 manual lenses, metering works without a chip, on younger Nikon models there will be no metering without a chip. to kenon adapter without a lens (to preserve infinity like Nikon).
Later I learned that the 600D, unlike classmates from Nikon, can still remotely control the flashes of the built-in flash and supports high-speed synchronization.

with regards to nikon: younger cameras do not have a screwdriver, aperture rheostat and can not measure exposure without a chip, that is, a huge number of lenses with a Nikon booster without a focus motor on younger cameras will only work in manual mode.

        • Valery A.

“A huge number of lenses with Nikon lenses without a focusing motor” - Canon has an analogue of this FD mount, but how will it work?

          • Alexey

Canon FD without an adapter will not be on Canon EOS.

FD is an obsolete mount and Kenon is no longer in use.
“Please note that Canon FD, nFD (NEW FD) lenses cannot be simply installed on modern Canon EOS SLR cameras without additional modification. But they're easy to use on mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS M. ”

            • Valery A.

Not quickly, you found the answer to this question. Which themselves (if not the namesake) and asked.

  • Nik Nikonov

    Hello!
Please tell me, is it possible to somehow adjust the front focus of the lens on the Canon 600d in the camera settings? Or will you still have to carry the device for adjustment to the service?
    Thank you!

    • Pastor

Unfortunately, no way. Will have to carry in the service. Only first, make sure that it is a back-front focus, and not testing errors. That is, a tripod, a ruler, a contrast object, and so on.

      • Nik Nikonov

The check showed a front focus, and it is very significant. So we carry on the adjustment ..
        Thanks for the advice.

        • Pastor

Not at all :) And what kind of lens, if not secret?

          • Nik Nikonov

            Canon EF 50 mm F 1.4 USM

            • Pastor

And, with him, such problems with focus are quite possible. I also missed it on 500d, while on 650d it works without misses. Good luck in the service.

              • Nik Nikonov

Yes, I also heard about this problem. And thanks!

  • Eugene

Please tell me whether it is worth taking the 600D model now, all the same, 2011, the first SLR. Or pay attention to a newer model? thanks

    • Oleg

      maybe 100d

      • Eugene

        What about the 1300D?

        • Denis

There is no touch screen and it is not rotary. lower grade than 600D. and 100D but NFC and Wi-Fi
and obviously the 1300D does not have hybrid autofocus

  • Angelina

Tell me, which low-cost flash is better to buy for this model?

    • Oleg

If it’s very budget, then watch the Chinese, and if you want high-quality light for a humane price tag, then (IMHO) the German Metz AF 48 and above (50, 52, 58)

    • Pastor

Look at Yongnuo with automatic - quite good flashes. But I'd rather take my own used 430-2. The price will be 8-10 thousand.

    • Hyc

It’s better to take Sigma from the hands, starting with 500 from the DG Super line (with display). A better 610th. The price will be three thousand if you look well. The leading number is awful. Head turns in all directions. Onboard diffuser for wide angle and shutter reflector. In this case, unlike the Chinese, all the buns and automation will work as with the branded canon ones (although at five hundred it seems that exposure compensation of the puff is not directly regulated from the carcass). Modeling light, highspeed, serial shooting, synchronization on any curtain, a lot of puff car control channels, TTL on the leading and driven puff works, and all this is built-in / canon / sigma on any stuffing. Plus, the Sigma puff has a dull light trap as a bonus, so it can be used on the manual as a slave even with digital dust boxes.

The only huge drawback of these puffs is the plastic shoe block. The puff is huge, so there is a great risk of breaking it off.

  • Alexadr

I saw a tempting price for AVITO on the Canon EOS 600D Kit 18-135 IS for 14500r. in ex. condition, as claimed by the seller. I wanted to buy. Previously, I did not use mirrors. MODEL 2011 Is it worth taking now? Tell me please.

    • Oleg

In any case, you need to watch, test. At least take an interest in its mileage, if more than 50000, then I would not get involved.

      • Alexander

The seller said 200 photos were taken and that’s it.

        • Oleg

For 5 years, 200 photos are absolutely fantastic. Ask to reset the screen screen from the frame counters.

          • Denis

200 frames are unlikely. however, the 2011 model, but the camera itself could be produced and bought recently

    • Valery A.

Parkua would not be na? It's up to you to decide whether or not to take. Take it if you are interested to know what kind of animal it is - a DSLR. During the inspection, I would ask the seller to take some pictures, incl. If, when viewed on the screen, you like the result (sharpness in the first place), take it. I think you have familiarized yourself with the algorithm for inspecting a used photo upon purchase.

    • Pastor

The price is very good, it is worth taking after checking it properly. And the mileage can be quite real. I often buy DSLRs with minimum mileage - people buy them for the sake of being a DSLR, take a hundred or two shots and understand that the phone is more convenient and not worse. They have this camera gathering dust for many months and years, and then they sell it so that it doesn't take up space.

  • Alexey

Good day! Please help in choosing. Canon 600d with an 18-55 Chinese lens or a Nikon d3100 with two 18-55 and 85-200 lenses for about the same price. thanks for the answer

    • George000

If you are going to seriously get involved in the photo then take 600d. With it, you can almost without problems use Soviet lenses, Chinese Yongnou (super-cheap) and EF series lenses like the cheap 50mm 1.8 II, which you will then have when switching to more serious 5D mark (N) photo equipment. D3100 will give a better picture, but the functionality is less and autofocus lenses only DX (((

      • Michael

Not DX, but AF-S. Do not confuse.

      • Denis

no one can write Yongnuo right the first time)

  • George000

Arkady thank you for the reviews, your regular reader! Your site is very helpful in getting to know lenses and cameras.
The Canon 600d is a great crop camera like the 550d and 650d. Well suited for both home use and photography training.

  • Oleg

“The focusing system has only one cross-shaped focusing point in the center. This point allows you to focus on lenses with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6 "- I don't understand, if the aperture is greater than 5,6, then what? Will miss a lot? Will not hit at all? Where can I find this information for other cameras? The fact is that I myself shoot with manual optics (Helios 44-7 and Kaleinar 5H), and on open apertures, the confirmation of autofocus often misses. So I'm looking for a reason ...

    • Oleg

It's about autofocus optics. The lens always focuses on the fully open aperture. If it is more than 5.6 for example 1.2; 1.8; 2.8; 4 and finally 5.6 it is a plus. If less, for example 6.3, then this is a minus, since the camera may not have enough light to focus. Here is an example of such a lens: Sigma Zoom DC 18-200mm 1: 3.5-6.3 HSM OS. Where at 200mm you will have a 6.3 aperture and this may affect the focus. Why is your manual optics smearing? This is more a question for the device that you use to confirm focus.

    • Serg

Hello! Tell me, please, where to find the noise reduction function on this model? I rummaged through the menu, I did not find it. Maybe I'm not very attentive. Help)

    • Michael

      in the instructions. p. 253-254

      • N

        What instruction? Used, without instructions

        • Valery A.

The instructions can easily be downloaded: http://manualbase.ru/ , or find out on which iso it is acceptable noise, I think no more than 1600.

I read reviews here, how these glasses were sickened, buy another lens right away. If evening or gloomy filming is not considered, it is not needed. I will take the same photo on a whale lens under this lighting in the article, it’s possible just with other apertures, and shutter speed at 1/60 from the hands will not be smeared yet. Above 100 ico, the device is noisy. So it’s true, the model is amateurishly legendary)))

who says 600d is hdr ????

    • Oleg

No, there is no such regime. But you can use exposure bracketing, and then glue HDR.

  • anonym

It was sony a 58 sold. Please tell me what to buy on Avito up to 30 thousand rubles.

    • Pokemon

Depends on the park of the remaining lenses.
You can try to buy a full-frame A850, if you save quite a bit.
      You can safely buy A77.

If you want to try Nikon, that is, for the money d7100.
      Cheap are d7000.

From Canon: 70d, the first and second five-copeck coins of varying degrees of death.

if we add a test of video recording resolution, then we can understand that any cheap video camera will do it. Hang some lens on him. sold his ancient Panasonic nv-gs400 which shot 576i 16: 9, (converted the whole thing to 1980p lancoz? and so on. After I bought a kenon, I realized that there was no need to sell a camcorder. Not like full hd? Hd full I thought to sell it, but decided to leave it for the photo, because I bought an objective for the price of 2x of these 600d kenons ... Even a magik lanternt will not give anything special, like putting plastic caps on the 8th model of a vase, and consider yourself cooler ....

    • Roman

I can hardly imagine that the upscale with 576i is superior in resolution to downscale with 1080p.

    • Oleg

The resolution of the kenon 600d is approximately 600 lines. So people just did not see the difference. Yes fotik in poor lighting will give a head start, and that's all. It is better to take Panas gh 4. for comparison - Panas gh3 with a kit lens will make a Canon 600d with any lens. Yes, there is a ruler that is not big.

      • Oleg

In video mode. The photo will clearly lose.

This is the most wretched DSLR review I've ever met.
    Author, you are worthless!

    • Vladislav Burp

      why immediately the worst?)

    • B. R. P.

Woof, anyhow not flywheels. Himself hto?

    • Dmitriy

I agree. And the photos are miserable in all his reviews.

  • Alexander

    Hello everyone)
Today I wanted to take 600d for a gift to the girl and did not understand anything about the Dive mode !! ((..., for some reason it seems to be there only in the green auto mode, when switching to other modes on the screen, the menu is stupid .. what I don't know ?! ) there is no experience with canons, but with the fact that there is, I quickly could not find this separate, as Arkady writes, the button for turning on this function for all photography modes.
    Paused the purchase.

    • Alexander

Live mode !, T9 distorted everything)))

  • Alexander

Hurray !, found the coveted button!))
