Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D - an excellent amateur DSLR camera, it is very easy to operate, and advanced automatic shooting programs can almost completely complete all tasks of the photographer for him. Usually the Canon 600D comes with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.6-5.6 IS II lens, or a similar class 18-55 lens, such a kit is called a 'kit'. This review presents only the Canon 600D body itself - no lens.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Canon 600D is the huge swivel display. The camera display has 3 in diagonally and more than one million points that form the image. The same display can be found in cameras. Canon 650D, 550D, 60D. View the menu and footage on the display is quite convenient.

The camera has a sensor on 18 megapixel  and can create an image of 5184 at 3456 points. The same matrix can be found in cameras Canon 550D.7D 60D, 650Dbut u 650D in fact, a slightly modified matrix is used, but when working at low ISOs, this can hardly be noticed. 18 megapixels is much more than is needed for amateur photography. The huge number of megapixels creates very heavy image files, for example, RAW files from a Canon 600D camera weigh from 18 to 36MB, and high-quality JPEG files from about 2 to 15MB. You can shoot in JPEG Normal mode to save space. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, in most cases megapixels do not play the most important role in image quality, you can read more in the section 'Battle of Megapixels'.

Canon 600D can shoot at speeds up to 3.7 fps, in some sources you can find information about 3,9 fps. Almost 4 frames per second is more than enough for amateur photography. Truth, frame buffer the camera is very small, and is only 6 pictures in JPEG format. If you enable the noise reduction function at high ISOs, the number of pictures in the buffer when shooting in JPEG format is reduced to only 2. When shooting in RAW format, the camera can only buffer 9 frames, and 4 frames with additional functions turned on. Roughly speaking, only a maximum of 2 seconds of continuous shooting can be squeezed out of the camera using maximum RAW (CR2) quality. By the way, RAW files have 14-bit color depth, which is very important when processing raw material. For 'thoughtful' shooting, speed is not important at all, personally I still use the camera Nikon D40 whose limit is 2.5 k / s.

Canon 600D is a fairly new camera, it was released in February 2011, so it has modern features, settings and capabilities that are in demand today. Of course, the Canon EOS 600D has a Live View mode that can be activated at the touch of a button. In mode Live view you can customize the display of the framing grid, which simplifies the shooting, the grid helped me to capture the winter landscape in the photographs from this review.

Of course, the Canon 600D is able to shoot video and at the same time allows you to control all the necessary settings for the video. I noticed that many people buy the Canon 600D precisely because of its excellent video shooting capabilities: 1920 × 1080 at 30 or 25 or 24 frames per second. Who does not need Terabytes of Full HD video, you can use simpler formats: 1280 by 720 or 640 by 480. In the latter two formats, you can shoot at 50 or 60 frames per second and make a 'slow-motion' effect. Videos can be shot for up to 30 minutes, or until the memory card is full, or until the video file becomes larger than 4GB. The camera can use SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. In the review, I used the Canon 600D with a 32GB SDHC card without any problems.

Canon 600D can use range ISO 100 to 6400 and expand it to 12.800. This is a good indicator. I do not recommend using high ISOs without noise reduction. I don’t shoot on ISO 6400 even on full-frame cameras, not to mention the matrix of the Canon 600D.

The camera has a 9-point focusing system, the same system is used on many other Canon cameras:  400D, 450D, 500D, 1100D. Please note that Canon 650 and 60D there is a focusing system distinguishable from the Canon 600D, the differences are in the number of cross-shaped points, which are higher in older models 60D, 650D. Auto focus speed is more dependent on the lens than on the camera. When writing a review, the auto focus system performed well.

For measuring exposure thrown out 63-zone sensor... In general, you need to get used to the operation of the exposure meter in each camera. For amateurs, I'll write that in automatic modes the camera determines the exposure quite well. But in difficult situations, for example, when shooting winter landscapes, where bright areas predominate, the exposure meter was a little 'lying'. In general, for measurement exposure and auto settings white balance no complaints.

Features:

  1. Automatic mode is called 'A +', which implies new technology and new algorithms for the camera in automatic mode. I have not used this green zone, I usually shoot in one of the modes A, S, M, which behave the same on all cameras.
  2. The camera has an interesting video function that can connect short clips together and add music to them.
  3. The camera uses a DIGIC 4 processor, the same as in the previous version 550D
  4. The focusing system has only one cross-shaped focusing point in the center. This point allows you to focus on lenses with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6
  5. When focusing, the built-in flash can work in strobe mode and highlight objects that you want to focus on. I do not like this feature.
  6. The camera can work with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1 \ 4000 seconds, with a minimum flash excerpt is 1 \ 200 seconds
  7. Canon 600D uses a pentamirror, while the optical viewfinder covers only 95% of the field of view, this sometimes leads to the appearance of extra detail at the edges of the frame. In Live View, coverage is 100% - what we see is what will be in the picture
  8. In Live View, you can turn on the histogram and framing grid and zoom in any area of the image up to 10 times
  9. Canon 600D can remotely control external flashessuch as the Speedlite 320EX and 270EX II
  10. The battery of the camera is not enough for about 500 shots. The number of shots per battery charge is highly dependent on a number of settings.
  11. Canon 600D has auto adjustment function vignetting (peripheral lighting), but does not have distortion correction functions and HA.
  12. Auto ISO takes into account the focal length of the lens and selects the desired shutter speed to take sharp pictures when the camera is in the hands. When I used a 50mm lens, the camera in auto ISO mode did not lower shutter speed below 1 \ 60s.

The main differences between Canon 550D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 600D has a rotatable display
  • Cameras have slightly different settings, especially in post photo processing
  • Canon 600D can shoot with the aspect ratio of 3: 2, 4: 3, 16: 9, 1: 1
  • Canon 600D can control external flash
  • Canon 600D knows how to compose a video series
  • Canon 600D adds DISP button and sensor disappears near viewfinder

The cameras are very similar, the Canon 600D is mostly more suitable for video due to its rotatable display.

The main differences between Canon 650D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 650D uses a modified 18MP 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
  • Canon 650D has a unique phase focus sensor in live view and when shooting video
  • Canon 650D has a unique touch screen display
  • Canon 650D uses the new DIGIC 5 processor, Canon 600D uses DIGIC 4
  • Canon 650D doubles its ISO limit
  • With the Canon 650D, the shooting speed reaches 5 fps compared to 3.9 fps with the Canon 600D
  • The Canon 650D uses a different focusing system, although the focus points are the same as the Canon 600D, but the Canon 650D is all cruciform
  • Canon 650D uses a built-in stereo microphone for video
  • Typically, the Canon 650D comes with a Canon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and the Canon 600D with a Canon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II

In a manner Canon 650D is a revolutionary camera, but in general, the quality of images can be expected at a level Canon 600D.

All sample photos in this review were shot on a lens Canon EF 50mm F1.8II.

  • ALEXA

SAY PLEASE, AND IF IT IS POSSIBLE TO CONFIGURE THE DISPLAY IN ANY WAY TO SEE THE REMOVABLE OBJECT (FOR PHOTO) ON THIS DISPLAY CONSTANTLY, NOT THE MODE SETTINGS

    • Julian

      Yes, you can.
      This mode is called LiveView.

  • Vyacheslav

But please tell me, can the external flash on this camera work in high-speed sync mode (for example, yongnuo yn 568ex ii)?

    • Dmitry

If the flash is equipped with such a function, it will work with the camera in the mode you are asking about. In particular, I recommend a native flash, for example the Canon speedlite 430 or 580, I often use it myself on a sunny day to reduce shadows.

  • Vladimir.

How can I turn on the “time dilation” effect when recording video in 1280 by 720 format? When shooting video: 1920 × 1080, which is better to use - 25 or 24 frames per second?

  • Marina

The instructions for the Canon 600D say that pentaprism is used, and you write that it is a pentamirror. And what is better to choose a pentaprism or a pentamirror?

    • Do_Oraemon

Pentaprism is better. It is much brighter and cleaner. Amateur cameras almost never have pentaprisms, as a prism is heavier and more expensive to manufacture.

  • Nasty

Good day! Tell me, I’m shooting a video and when you bring something in small text, it doesn’t focus !! The lens that came with the kit !! I’ve been interested for a long time) The mode is Af and stabilzer is on !!

    • Igor

Use manual focus or a macro lens

    • Vlad

Bring the lens very close to the text. Each lens has a minimum and maximum focusing distance.

  • Vadim

Good day ! My EOS 600 D in auto mode began to greatly illuminate and discolor the photo. Does that mean it’s time for repair? Thanks in advance.

  • Irina

Good evening. Please tell me what kind of lens for Kenon 600d (mainly shooting portraits) landscapes

    • Ev

Canon 50 mm 1.8 is fine! Great quality + reasonable price!

    • Andrei

for portraits and landscapes you need 2 different lenses))) first of all. for landscapes, wide angle is necessary…. and so on, they are also different))) it's not all that simple with one lens, it is equally good to take pictures of portraits and landscapes, do not listen to deer

  • Natalia

I can not decide on the choice of the first SLR. Tell me which is better to take nikon d3200 or canon eos 600d?

    • Amatich

      D 3200 is better.

      • Kuzmich

        600 D is better

    • Eugene

I was d3200 - I happily sold it, d600 is much nicer, as for me, I bought it. IMHO

  • Yura

Well, please please buy a chi not?

  • Anita

My question is just about this 50mm 1.8 lens! Please tell me if it makes sense to buy a 600d body + 50 mm 1.8? After all, the 18-55 whale lens is soap and if you believe your articles its focal length is only 5 mm longer?

    • anonym

The 50mm 1.8 is much better than the whale. Take not regret it

  • Eugene

Hello! Please tell me if it is possible to use the Canon EOS 600d as a webcam. If so, tell me how or where to find out. Thanks.

  • Irina

Good afternoon, please tell me which lens to purchase on canon 600d, after whale

    • Andrei

))))))) hah)))) depending on what kind of shots you need a lens

  • Oleg

Please tell me if there is an HDR / Cgfcb, j mode on the Canon 600D

    • anonym

No, there is no such regime

  • Ivan

the operation of the metering system on the Canon 600D without a chip seemed to me more successful than with a chip ...
interesting fact, it’s a pity that without a chip there is no focus ...

  • anonym

but please tell me how to change the size of a Canon 600D photo? We gave it to be repaired, but they said that we needed a special book that was in the purchase of the camera, but unfortunately we cannot find it ...., tell me how to change the size. Thank you!

    • anonym

look at the instructions on the Internet !!!

  • anonym

The Canon 600D uses a penta mirror, which is cheaper than a pentaprism — what is that written about? And how is this to be understood? This is what finally? Or a typo? Nonsense…

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Yurets

Is the ISO changing, or are they fixed on the Canon 600D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Changing :)

    • Andrei

      deer

  • Anna

If you were faced with a choice between 600d and nikon d5100, which one would you choose?) I really like the characteristics of d5100, but in stores they always recommend kenons. Kenon is more convenient to hold ... And they also say they are of better quality than Nikon and their lens is better, and reviews on the Internet speak of something else. I understand that they are equivalent, but still which one you choose ...

    • Larissa

Tell me, what did you choose in the end?
I am also puzzled by this question

  • Anna

I already see that this question is not the only one tormenting me)))

  • stabbing

    tell me what to buy
Nikon D3200 kit 18-55 VR II

will be used after moving from Canon to a top shot of 1500 soap dishes

the choice is more on Canon 600 or 650 and Nikon 5100 or 1100
what do you recommend for a beginner in the reflex

    • Andrei

18-135 will be completely satisfied with him

      • Andrei

600d 18-135 for a beginner, it will be it and even a little more importantly, understand not in camera functions but in elementary manual modes

  • lisan68

Dear Arkady, reading the paragraph about the burst speed of 600d in the article, I saw that the buffer in the burst in RAW contains more frames than in JPEG. Tell me, is this a feature of the 600d or just a bug? Thanks…

  • anonym

I have a 600d lens with an 18-135 lens. It works perfectly if you know the elementary rules for manual settings. some questions are stupid. to you far from such a technique, first figure out what a photo is and how to correctly take a picture best of all buy yourself a soap box and do not mess with your questions.

  • Andrei

if the 600d falls into the hands of a pro it is a very cool camera and if people who take a camera once a month then as stated in the comment above buy a soap box

  • Dmitriy

Hello. Does the exposure meter work with Soviet optics?

  • Alexey

I use this device for more than six months and I can say that it suits me perfectly.
On a fresh charge 1500 photos without problems (no flash, LV and photo reviews after each shot).
The other day I experimented with serial shooting at maximum settings so in jpg it takes without any lags all 50 shots in a row with the declared speed, but in Rabbi Fotik starts to choke after 5 shots.
