Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D - an excellent amateur DSLR camera, it is very easy to operate, and advanced automatic shooting programs can almost completely complete all tasks of the photographer for him. Usually the Canon 600D comes with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.6-5.6 IS II lens, or a similar class 18-55 lens, such a kit is called a 'kit'. This review presents only the Canon 600D body itself - no lens.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Canon 600D is the huge swivel display. The camera display has 3 in diagonally and more than one million points that form the image. The same display can be found in cameras. Canon 650D, 550D, 60D. View the menu and footage on the display is quite convenient.

The camera has a sensor on 18 megapixel  and can create an image of 5184 at 3456 points. The same matrix can be found in cameras Canon 550D.7D 60D, 650Dbut u 650D in fact, a slightly modified matrix is used, but when working at low ISOs, this can hardly be noticed. 18 megapixels is much more than is needed for amateur photography. The huge number of megapixels creates very heavy image files, for example, RAW files from a Canon 600D camera weigh from 18 to 36MB, and high-quality JPEG files from about 2 to 15MB. You can shoot in JPEG Normal mode to save space. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, in most cases megapixels do not play the most important role in image quality, you can read more in the section 'Battle of Megapixels'.

Canon 600D can shoot at speeds up to 3.7 fps, in some sources you can find information about 3,9 fps. Almost 4 frames per second is more than enough for amateur photography. Truth, frame buffer the camera is very small, and is only 6 pictures in JPEG format. If you enable the noise reduction function at high ISOs, the number of pictures in the buffer when shooting in JPEG format is reduced to only 2. When shooting in RAW format, the camera can only buffer 9 frames, and 4 frames with additional functions turned on. Roughly speaking, only a maximum of 2 seconds of continuous shooting can be squeezed out of the camera using maximum RAW (CR2) quality. By the way, RAW files have 14-bit color depth, which is very important when processing raw material. For 'thoughtful' shooting, speed is not important at all, personally I still use the camera Nikon D40 whose limit is 2.5 k / s.

Canon 600D is a fairly new camera, it was released in February 2011, so it has modern features, settings and capabilities that are in demand today. Of course, the Canon EOS 600D has a Live View mode that can be activated at the touch of a button. In mode live view you can customize the display of the framing grid, which simplifies the shooting, the grid helped me to capture the winter landscape in the photographs from this review.

Of course, the Canon 600D is able to shoot video and at the same time allows you to control all the necessary settings for the video. I noticed that many people buy the Canon 600D precisely because of its excellent video shooting capabilities: 1920 × 1080 at 30 or 25 or 24 frames per second. Who does not need Terabytes of Full HD video, you can use simpler formats: 1280 by 720 or 640 by 480. In the latter two formats, you can shoot at 50 or 60 frames per second and make a 'slow-motion' effect. Videos can be shot for up to 30 minutes, or until the memory card is full, or until the video file becomes larger than 4GB. The camera can use SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. In the review, I used the Canon 600D with a 32GB SDHC card without any problems.

Canon 600D can use range ISO 100 to 6400 and expand it to 12.800. This is a good indicator. I do not recommend using high ISOs without noise reduction. I don’t shoot on ISO 6400 even on full-frame cameras, not to mention the matrix of the Canon 600D.

The camera has a 9-point focusing system, the same system is used on many other Canon cameras:  400D, 450D, 500D, 1100D. Please note that Canon 650 and 60D there is a focusing system distinguishable from the Canon 600D, the differences are in the number of cross-shaped points, which are higher in older models 60D, 650D. Auto focus speed is more dependent on the lens than on the camera. When writing a review, the auto focus system performed well.

For measuring exposure thrown out 63-zone sensor... In general, you need to get used to the operation of the exposure meter in each camera. For amateurs, I'll write that in automatic modes the camera determines the exposure quite well. But in difficult situations, for example, when shooting winter landscapes, where bright areas predominate, the exposure meter was a little 'lying'. In general, for measurement exposure and auto settings white balance no complaints.

Features:

  1. Automatic mode is called 'A +', which implies new technology and new algorithms for the camera in automatic mode. I have not used this green zone, I usually shoot in one of the modes A, S, M, which behave the same on all cameras.
  2. The camera has an interesting video function that can connect short clips together and add music to them.
  3. The camera uses a DIGIC 4 processor, the same as in the previous version 550D
  4. The focusing system has only one cross-shaped focusing point in the center. This point allows you to focus on lenses with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6
  5. When focusing, the built-in flash can work in strobe mode and highlight objects that you want to focus on. I do not like this feature.
  6. The camera can work with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1 \ 4000 seconds, with a minimum flash excerpt is 1 \ 200 seconds
  7. Canon 600D uses a pentamirror, while the optical viewfinder covers only 95% of the field of view, this sometimes leads to the appearance of extra detail at the edges of the frame. In Live View, coverage is 100% - what we see is what will be in the picture
  8. In Live View, you can turn on the histogram and framing grid and zoom in any area of the image up to 10 times
  9. Canon 600D can remotely control external flashessuch as the Speedlite 320EX and 270EX II
  10. The battery of the camera is not enough for about 500 shots. The number of shots per battery charge is highly dependent on a number of settings.
  11. Canon 600D has auto adjustment function vignetting (peripheral lighting), but does not have distortion correction functions and HA.
  12. Auto ISO takes into account the focal length of the lens and selects the desired shutter speed to take sharp pictures when the camera is in the hands. When I used a 50mm lens, the camera in auto ISO mode did not lower shutter speed below 1 \ 60s.

The main differences between Canon 550D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 600D has a rotatable display
  • Cameras have slightly different settings, especially in post photo processing
  • Canon 600D can shoot with the aspect ratio of 3: 2, 4: 3, 16: 9, 1: 1
  • Canon 600D can control external flash
  • Canon 600D knows how to compose a video series
  • Canon 600D adds DISP button and sensor disappears near viewfinder

The cameras are very similar, the Canon 600D is mostly more suitable for video due to its rotatable display.

Photo on Canon 600D

Photo on Canon 600D

The main differences between Canon 650D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 650D uses a modified 18MP 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
  • Canon 650D has a unique phase focus sensor in live view and when shooting video
  • Canon 650D has a unique touch screen display
  • Canon 650D uses the new DIGIC 5 processor, Canon 600D uses DIGIC 4
  • Canon 650D doubles its ISO limit
  • With the Canon 650D, the shooting speed reaches 5 fps compared to 3.9 fps with the Canon 600D
  • The Canon 650D uses a different focusing system, although the focus points are the same as the Canon 600D, but the Canon 650D is all cruciform
  • Canon 650D uses a built-in stereo microphone for video
  • Typically, the Canon 650D comes with a Canon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and the Canon 600D with a Canon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II

In a manner Canon 650D is a revolutionary camera, but in general, the quality of images can be expected at a level Canon 600D.

All sample photos in this review were shot on a lens Canon EF 50mm F1.8II.

Hello. Help me choose between kenon 600d and 650d or all the same nikon?

  • Dafna

I bought my first Canon 650D DSLR, while I'm happy, but I can't figure out why the flash stopped working ((((please help me in the settings that I messed up ...

  • Vera

Arkady, hello, but you won’t tell me which camera is better for the beginner nikon d5100 kit 18-55 mm or canon 600d 18-55mm ???

    • Taras

If the priority is in the photo (I think for a girl like that), then according to the characteristics and tests, Nikon is better .. and even so it’s more a matter of philosophy) you shoot anyway anyway, the final result will depend on you. Go to the store and look at both, I also had a choice between these devices, but since before that there was a Canon 1100d and it required plus everything, a choice was made for 600d specifically for which this review was made. You look at what is more convenient for you, in ergonomics, in management, in further servicing and picking) not everything is so simple) very soon you will want to take a fifty-aperture fast, and then some kind of authentic one) suddenly ask http://vk.com/taras_electrosoul

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a beginner, by and large, without much difference, the more they have lenses with the same parameters.

        Good afternoon, Arkady.
The branch is dead, so I will forward the question directly to you, for which I wildly apologize.
I apologize for the noob question, but I didn’t find an answer to it anywhere (it may well be that I was looking badly, but as it is 😀) - how can I connect the Canon EOS 600D to a PC in USB storage mode? The device has a VideoOUT connector that looks like a miniUSB, but it came with a cable with tulips, but there is no USB cable, because the old owner tied a dog to it somewhere. Do you have your own USB-miniUSB cable, but where to plug it into the device (please don’t be too sarcastic, remembering Lieutenant Rzhevsky)? Or is it still not possible to connect the 600D in USB-drive mode? Thank you.

        • Arkady Shapoval

You need a USB MINI B cable (not to be confused with Micro B). They are easy to find and buy. For some reason, cameras and printers used to often use this type of USB.

          • Victor

Thanks for the answer. I correctly understood that this is a regular USB mini, like Look what is on AliExpress! Vention Mini USB Cable, Data Sync & Charging Cable for MP3 MP4 Player, GPS Camera, Mobile Phone, Mini USB 0,25, 0,5m, 1m, 1,5m, 2m for US $1.99 – already discounted -18%
https://alii.pub/6q7usn ? And does it plug into the AV out digital jack?

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Yes

              • Victor

Thank you. Good luck with everything

  • Elena

Arkady, good afternoon. Tell the newbie. Like everything I choose between nikon d5100 kit 18-105 mm and canon 600d 18-135mm. In terms of grip, canon seemed more convenient, but I wanted to pay attention when choosing another question. I plan to buy a fifty dollars, according to reviews, I realized that the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II very often misses with autofocus, so I don’t really want to buy it, but I want to fix it. Is there any other alternative with a fix for Canon, the budget is up to 2 thousand UAH.?

    • Arkady Shapoval

There are no cheap native alternatives.

      • Elena

But is it worth paying attention to non-relatives? advise fifty dollars for canon 600d. Thanks.

        • Arkady Shapoval

native 50 1.4 they say is not bad, but also worth the money.

          • Elena

Thanks, Arkady. So we will raise money for 50 1.4 :). All the same, Canon went better and seemed more comfortable. Thank you!

          • Marina

Hello! Please tell me which camera will be better than the Canon EOS650D, Canon EOS 1100D or Nikon D 3200? I have a small child and not only good photos are important to me, but also a good video.

            • Arkady Shapoval

In general, I recommend the d3200, colors and details will be better.

  • Jury

Good evening. I ask for advice. I choose between Canon EOS650D + 18-135 STM and Canon EOS650D + 1855ISII + 55250ISII. I understand that the difference is only in the lenses, but this also causes the main difficulty. I'd like to be prepared for various situations when shooting. Therefore, the second option looks quite seductive. But I’m also considering the option of acquiring an additional lens to the first model, if at all appropriate (please indicate a few models), I’m ready to spend another 500-600 cu

    • Taras

Good evening. To begin with, you need to decide what you will shoot, and in the first version the lens with real-time autofocus support (STM, i.e. when shooting video) is included in the kit, and in the second version, judging by the indicated designations, there are just two whales with a stabilizer. It's up to you .. but in 650D, kakraz is the main feature of real-time autofocus when shooting movies, that is, the first option will be more acceptable in both focal and autofocus in video.

  • Jury

And yet, the seller was persistently advising the Canon EOS 60D EF-S17-85 IS USM Kit in the store today. Then I ask for help in choosing one of the three models.

    • Taras

read the forums) there is a comparison. Somewhere I met that the 650D came to replace the 60D somehow. And you choose what suits you best, because no one knows what exactly the camera is for you

  • Taras

I remembered what I came here. I wanted to scold the rotary display, especially when shooting (long) video. When you put it like in a video camera: you open and unfold it, then it deviates slightly downward, and relative to the camera it becomes uneven horizontally, and if you navigate by the position of the display, then imperceptibly you align it with the horizon, while making a small tilt angle in the very video ... you need to remember about it .. it's easier to leave it open at all. With this there is no problem when using a tripod and levels on it .. but sometimes I had to shoot with my hands .. that's where I got caught :)

  • Jury

Thanks for the answer. I dropped the option with Canon EOS650D + 1855ISII + 55250ISII. But now the choice has come between, Canon EOS650D + 18-135 STM and Canon EOS 60D 18-135 IS Kit. I read / watched a lot of reviews on those. I did not see much difference in characteristics. Each has its own advantages over the other, but in general it is quite comparable. Perhaps I missed something (but for example, the same touchscreen does not play a fundamental role), so once again I ask the help of professionals / amateurs: which model would you choose for yourself and why. As a last resort, the thought comes to mind, come to the store again, hold both models in your hands, and what kind of “soul will fall” ...

can someone come in handy: my request to the official website of the company and the official response.
Your service request has been registered in our system under the number: 1-843901660.
    Details of your service request:
    Name: Alexander
    Product: EOS 600D
Short description: In the viewfinder, a number of focus points have a pronounced red halo when focusing, which makes shooting difficult, especially in low light conditions. the service center answered that this is a feature of the camera model, however, the manual and description of the model on your website does not indicate anything about this “feature”. Is it normal for halos to appear around the focus points in the viewfinder, or is it a defect. if there is a defect, is the defect covered by the warranty? thanks

Thank you for contacting Canon Customer Support.
We inform you that this focus area (pronounced red halo) is not a defect and is not eliminated.

ps the service center said that they have a lot of cameras with such a "diagnosis" but this is a feature of the 600 model

  • A.

To be honest, I think the entry-level Canon's are better. That is, they do not “shoot better”, but better for users.
Firstly: K. does not have the notorious "screwdriver", and the lenses do not have to choose, as in N., between AF-s for 7.500 rubles, or AF for 3.500 rubles, but aim with "knobs".
Secondly: in K.'s manual lenses, exposure metering works. N. has no. (Well, that is, my d5100. On d7000, everything seems to be normal)
Third: my d5100 does not have a command flash control mode, while the 600d, the main competitor, does.
Fourth: K. still has a more logical control (it’s true, take as an example at least that K. has a separate ISO button)
Fifth: K.’s video is also said to be better, but I’m not very saddened by this fact.
And finally: K. has more mp, but this also does not sadden me :)

In general, I was somewhat disappointed in N. Yes, of course, this company often makes Canon’s heart contract with fear (d3, d600 output, for example, etc.) and, they say, N.’s glass is always better than K. But given the price optics, they are not very supportive of amateurs. Despite the fact that Nikon did not please me in this, I am still pleased with my purchase of the d5100 at the time, I just would like a little more convenient, more functional. Canon can. It was probably necessary to just spare no money and take the d7000. :)

ZY: I do not consider the d5200 output to be appropriate at all. He, campaign, for lovers of all the newest.

Hello Arkady. I like the materials on your site, there is a lot of information about different lenses and central control centers, thanks for your work). I would like to ask you a question - please tell me which “system” will provide more natural skin tones when shooting portraits: Canon 600Di with 1.8 $ 5100 or Nikon Di1.8 with XNUMX $ Nikkor XNUMX? I plan to use the camera specifically for portraits, in the internet I have read all kinds of (absolutely contradictory) information about the accuracy of rendering skin tones. Some write that Nikon's complexions are "carrot", "overcooked", too warm tones, while Canon's are more real, but slightly coldish. Others argue that, on the contrary, Nikons are better and Canon in terms of color rendering of facial shades with ... set in full. I want to know your opinion, especially since you love fifty dollars, but in your article about Canon, mostly landscapes ((((

    • Arkady Shapoval

oh, skinton is a very serious and difficult and controversial issue. A lot depends on the settings, RAW processing.

  • Julia

Hello Arkady! I bought a Canon600D with an 18-55 whale lens. Photos turn out some kind of faded, no juiciness or something. In auto mode, I do not shoot. A bit disappointed. Here is the link
    http://s019.radikal.ru/i613/1304/38/98dc4c9f3e09.jpg

    • Konstantin

      Hello!
As for me, the color of your photo is natural. I don't like too much saturation. Although in contrast - overexposed. I would try to take this photo like this - I would move a little further, zoom in, turn on the flash with compensation at -1 and set the exposure to -1/3. Then the flash would illuminate the face, and the exposure to minus made the background a little darker. In general, I noticed behind the camera that it almost always overshadows the photo. Therefore, I almost always make my exposure negative. If you do not have enough saturation, then no one bothers to increase this very saturation in the camera settings.
Good luck in mastering the camera, and even with your experience you would like it more and more often, rather than disappoint.

Hello! I’ve been using this camera for a month, I can’t figure out one thing, when in auto mode focus occurs, a pair of focus points is selected (two, three or more), and in manual mode, you can choose only one, and if there are many people in the photo, select several manually points, tell me please rummaged the entire Internet

    • NE

try to start by digging the operating instructions, and leave the Internet alone :) I see that more than 4 years have passed, this is so, as a systematic approach ..

  • Daphnia

    Hello! I have a Canon 600D.

Can you please tell me about focus points: can I assign them myself? The problem is that they light up red on their own and this often ruins my composition. And to shoot, not looking through the viewfinder, but at the screen, - the ability to focus only through the frame (that is, almost one "point"). Or do I want the impossible?

I also did not understand how to increase the ISO to 12800. Please explain.

  • Nastya

And why is the button located on the left of the lens?
And can a 600d focus alignment be done like the D7000 !?
Thanks for the site and the answers, you are super!

    • Konstantin

If it is small, without a signature, the one on the left is the repeater button (closes the aperture to the set value).
      No, he can not.

  • Elina

Hello Arkady! First of all, thank you very much for your articles! and secondly, please help me with a choice =) I choose the first DSLR, amateur! I will photograph a child, family, nature ...,
    in my sample list:
    Canon EOS 600D Kit 18-55IS
Canon EOS 1100D Kit 18-55 IS II
I want to buy a lens right away
    - Canon EF 50mm F / 1.8 II, (is it worth buying or I don't need it yet?)
    either Nikon D5100 Kit 18-55,
but I didn't find an inexpensive “fifty kopeck piece” for him = ((if, what, please advise)

    • Alexander

Now I myself am facing a similar choice. Sooner or later, the kit lens is not enough, many people want to play with the depth of field. This is where the fun begins. For Canon, you can buy fifty dollars for 120 ye. But for nikon for 250 ye. Although the quality of Nikon's will be somewhat better. For the price comes Canon EOS 600D + Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II (630 ye) = Nikon D3100 (370 ye) + AF-S NIKKOR 50 mm f / 1,8G (250 ye) (namely D3100). Prices are in Belarus. So I'm leaning towards 600d. I will zoom with my feet. All the same, the device has more serious capabilities. You can use manual optics, but dances with a small tambourine appear on nikon. I take a picture of a child, so manual optics are unacceptable, they run too fast) I don't consider Canon EOS 1100D at all, because there is some kind of cropping ... Nikon D5100 seems to be nothing if not for the cost of an additional lens.
In any case, thank you joyfully. Everything is described accessible, clarity appeared in many moments.

Hello! Please help me, how can I fix it so that the canon 600D records video without restriction, on the entire memory card and not for 30 minutes! And I want to ask if this 600D camera focuses automatically? How can I make the lens focus by itself, and not by my hand? twisted! uncomfortable!
    Thanks in advance!

    • Konstantin

Just install “Alternative firmware” - Magic Lantern. But it should be borne in mind that when shooting video, the camera matrix gets very hot, and at high ambient temperatures, the camera may turn off from overheating.
At the expense of autofocus, or with your hands - this, in my opinion, is the most reliable, or allow focusing in the menu when the shutter button is half pressed and focus every time you notice that the subject is out of focus.

Thanks to the author for the reviews - objectively, competently, to the point. I noticed that the author still shoots with Nikon D40. In no case would I venture to suggest that the author does not have money for another camera, but I would like to know the reason: a habit? there is no point in overpaying? or something else…

The author, as it were, has a D700, if you carefully read it.
And the forty is a very nice little thing, inexpensive (you can take it for 5-6 thousand), light, simple, and at the same time its functions are MORE than enough for normal shooting - nothing more.
When I decided to change my D90, I seriously considered the D40 as a possible replacement, but in the end I settled on the D3100, since it was easier to get it in “almost zero state”.

Tell me in which mode to take pictures in the dark? When focusing on A +, the red square inside the screen lights up and does not focus (does not take pictures).

    • Konstantin

Include in the menu the item “Switching on the AF-assist lamp” pages 86 and 255 of the instructions.
