Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D review

Canon EOS 600D - an excellent amateur DSLR camera, it is very easy to operate, and advanced automatic shooting programs can almost completely complete all tasks of the photographer for him. Usually the Canon 600D comes with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm F3.6-5.6 IS II lens, or a similar class 18-55 lens, such a kit is called a 'kit'. This review presents only the Canon 600D body itself - no lens.

The first thing you notice when you pick up the Canon 600D is the huge swivel display. The camera display has 3 in diagonally and more than one million points that form the image. The same display can be found in cameras. Canon 650D, 550D, 60D. View the menu and footage on the display is quite convenient.

The camera has a sensor on 18 megapixel  and can create an image of 5184 at 3456 points. The same matrix can be found in cameras Canon 550D.7D 60D, 650Dbut u 650D in fact, a slightly modified matrix is used, but when working at low ISOs, this can hardly be noticed. 18 megapixels is much more than is needed for amateur photography. The huge number of megapixels creates very heavy image files, for example, RAW files from a Canon 600D camera weigh from 18 to 36MB, and high-quality JPEG files from about 2 to 15MB. You can shoot in JPEG Normal mode to save space. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, in most cases megapixels do not play the most important role in image quality, you can read more in the section 'Battle of Megapixels'.

Canon 600D can shoot at speeds up to 3.7 fps, in some sources you can find information about 3,9 fps. Almost 4 frames per second is more than enough for amateur photography. Truth, frame buffer the camera is very small, and is only 6 pictures in JPEG format. If you enable the noise reduction function at high ISOs, the number of pictures in the buffer when shooting in JPEG format is reduced to only 2. When shooting in RAW format, the camera can only buffer 9 frames, and 4 frames with additional functions turned on. Roughly speaking, only a maximum of 2 seconds of continuous shooting can be squeezed out of the camera using maximum RAW (CR2) quality. By the way, RAW files have 14-bit color depth, which is very important when processing raw material. For 'thoughtful' shooting, speed is not important at all, personally I still use the camera Nikon D40 whose limit is 2.5 k / s.

Canon 600D is a fairly new camera, it was released in February 2011, so it has modern features, settings and capabilities that are in demand today. Of course, the Canon EOS 600D has a Live View mode that can be activated at the touch of a button. In mode live view you can customize the display of the framing grid, which simplifies the shooting, the grid helped me to capture the winter landscape in the photographs from this review.

Of course, the Canon 600D is able to shoot video and at the same time allows you to control all the necessary settings for the video. I noticed that many people buy the Canon 600D precisely because of its excellent video shooting capabilities: 1920 × 1080 at 30 or 25 or 24 frames per second. Who does not need Terabytes of Full HD video, you can use simpler formats: 1280 by 720 or 640 by 480. In the latter two formats, you can shoot at 50 or 60 frames per second and make a 'slow-motion' effect. Videos can be shot for up to 30 minutes, or until the memory card is full, or until the video file becomes larger than 4GB. The camera can use SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards. In the review, I used the Canon 600D with a 32GB SDHC card without any problems.

Canon 600D can use range ISO 100 to 6400 and expand it to 12.800. This is a good indicator. I do not recommend using high ISOs without noise reduction. I don’t shoot on ISO 6400 even on full-frame cameras, not to mention the matrix of the Canon 600D.

The camera has a 9-point focusing system, the same system is used on many other Canon cameras:  400D, 450D, 500D, 1100D. Please note that Canon 650 and 60D there is a focusing system distinguishable from the Canon 600D, the differences are in the number of cross-shaped points, which are higher in older models 60D, 650D. Auto focus speed is more dependent on the lens than on the camera. When writing a review, the auto focus system performed well.

For measuring exposure thrown out 63-zone sensor... In general, you need to get used to the operation of the exposure meter in each camera. For amateurs, I'll write that in automatic modes the camera determines the exposure quite well. But in difficult situations, for example, when shooting winter landscapes, where bright areas predominate, the exposure meter was a little 'lying'. In general, for measurement exposure and auto settings white balance no complaints.

Features:

  1. Automatic mode is called 'A +', which implies new technology and new algorithms for the camera in automatic mode. I have not used this green zone, I usually shoot in one of the modes A, S, M, which behave the same on all cameras.
  2. The camera has an interesting video function that can connect short clips together and add music to them.
  3. The camera uses a DIGIC 4 processor, the same as in the previous version 550D
  4. The focusing system has only one cross-shaped focusing point in the center. This point allows you to focus on lenses with a maximum aperture of F / 5.6
  5. When focusing, the built-in flash can work in strobe mode and highlight objects that you want to focus on. I do not like this feature.
  6. The camera can work with shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1 \ 4000 seconds, with a minimum flash excerpt is 1 \ 200 seconds
  7. Canon 600D uses a pentamirror, while the optical viewfinder covers only 95% of the field of view, this sometimes leads to the appearance of extra detail at the edges of the frame. In Live View, coverage is 100% - what we see is what will be in the picture
  8. In Live View, you can turn on the histogram and framing grid and zoom in any area of the image up to 10 times
  9. Canon 600D can remotely control external flashessuch as the Speedlite 320EX and 270EX II
  10. The battery of the camera is not enough for about 500 shots. The number of shots per battery charge is highly dependent on a number of settings.
  11. Canon 600D has auto adjustment function vignetting (peripheral lighting), but does not have distortion correction functions and HA.
  12. Auto ISO takes into account the focal length of the lens and selects the desired shutter speed to take sharp pictures when the camera is in the hands. When I used a 50mm lens, the camera in auto ISO mode did not lower shutter speed below 1 \ 60s.

The main differences between Canon 550D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 600D has a rotatable display
  • Cameras have slightly different settings, especially in post photo processing
  • Canon 600D can shoot with the aspect ratio of 3: 2, 4: 3, 16: 9, 1: 1
  • Canon 600D can control external flash
  • Canon 600D knows how to compose a video series
  • Canon 600D adds DISP button and sensor disappears near viewfinder

The cameras are very similar, the Canon 600D is mostly more suitable for video due to its rotatable display.

Photo on Canon 600D

Photo on Canon 600D

The main differences between Canon 650D and Canon 600D

  • Canon 650D uses a modified 18MP 'Hybrid CMOS' sensor
  • Canon 650D has a unique phase focus sensor in live view and when shooting video
  • Canon 650D has a unique touch screen display
  • Canon 650D uses the new DIGIC 5 processor, Canon 600D uses DIGIC 4
  • Canon 650D doubles its ISO limit
  • With the Canon 650D, the shooting speed reaches 5 fps compared to 3.9 fps with the Canon 600D
  • The Canon 650D uses a different focusing system, although the focus points are the same as the Canon 600D, but the Canon 650D is all cruciform
  • Canon 650D uses a built-in stereo microphone for video
  • Typically, the Canon 650D comes with a Canon 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, and the Canon 600D with a Canon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS II

In a manner Canon 650D is a revolutionary camera, but in general, the quality of images can be expected at a level Canon 600D.

All sample photos in this review were shot on a lens Canon EF 50mm F1.8II.

    provocative question
    600d or d5100?: - D

    • Arkady Shapoval

      For what purpose? Photos, videos?

      • Andrei

        I have 5100.
So I wanted to make sure mine is better: -D
But seriously, it is photographic qualities that are of interest in comparison.

        • Arkady Shapoval

DD, the level of noise at high ISO, the color depth is better in the D5100. Measuring cameras is a bad thing, you need to take pictures with their help, and then they measure the result.

          • Maksim

And which one is better for video, and it seems that in some of them there is a limit for recording video at 20, and then the matrix allegedly overheats?) If you can, please advise which one is better first of all for shooting video and, moreover, movement (assuming that a mechanical stabilizer will be used)?

      • Neo

please help, I don’t know how to shoot video on canon eos600d, I select the video mode, I hold down the button, a sound occurs but it takes a normal photo

        • Alexander

you do not need to press the shutter button, but the button to switch the viewfinder to the LCD, it is next to the viewfinder, the camera icon on it

  • Basil

Arkady, a very controversial statement about the color depth of Nikon;)

  • Andrei

Thanks for the answer! I completely agree with you about the skill, the technique is secondary.

  • Sergiy

For a long time I was standing in front of the vibrator of the canon 600d chi nikon d5100. They’re offended by the fact that they’re a nod to aesthetics and price change. Nikon is more expensive to sit in russia and better off than you can see, it’s also possible to use HDR and can’t get more cheaply. .

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, first of all there is a choice between the system - Nikon, Canon, etc., and then the choice of the model itself.

    • Taras

I’ve gotten trouble for a while, but the Nikon D5100 is dear) I’m also important to add the Kenon) HDR functions didn’t justify itself for me, I flipped out and d5100 song hour .. that’s a direct button that’s turned on for me it’s inconsequentially, those that can’t twist the mode circle, for example, turn it on the M through the drive to the video)

  • Alex

Thanks to the authors for paying more attention to Canon. I would like more material on Canon optics.

I have a 600D. It was interesting to read how you, Arkady, tell about him, or show something of new interest in the review. Good, it is written! The camera is really great!

    • Arkady Shapoval

If it weren’t for the new 650D, I would write that Canon’s best amateur camera :)

      • Slam

        time does not stand still!)

      • Taras

The 650 was released, more intelligently, it became popular for DSLRs to know video, from marketing and proprietary) new chips, touch display, autofocus video in real time (go special.

        • Arkady Shapoval

The phase focus in the video will be interesting to try :)

A friend of mine shoots weddings with Canon EOS 600D, and quite successfully. One wedding was filmed with her alone (I was on a Nikon D7000) - on a 600D immediately without processing the face, it seemed as if a little warmer in color temperature.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      We will know.

    • Gene jb

I think that it depends more on the camera and BB settings. Nikon is said to have better paint.

      • Arkady Shapoval

        Different snapshot management settings.

      • Nicholas

They say that Nikon has a terrible skinton. I even saw a video where a foreign photographer justified his transfer to Canon’s camp because of the best Jipeg that you don’t need to torment ravas, and so well, unlike Nikon.

  • Gene jb

well, actually, with 400D when using CHDK Iso 3000, although it does not matter, one hell above 800 cannot be removed. But the 600D's at 3200 are so noisy that the 6400 and 12800 are also made just like that, for advertising. Although if you make noise reduction, and then sharpen resize 2 times, then there will already be something ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Is CHDK an official utility?

      • Gene jb

Of course not. but I'm not talking about that. apparently, the maximum ISO does not matter if it still cannot be removed.

        • Arkady Shapoval

It has, but in very, very extreme and rare cases.

          • Taras

є Yak firmware is installed on top of the main one, in it you can ISO into space mabut p_dnyati navit for 600d

          • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon also released a new firmware for D1x, only it costs 200 cu officially.

          • Taras

and Tsya Sharova) having downloaded here from them on the Chinese site) won’s more video is assigned)

          • Arkady Shapoval

            It's good :)

  • Denis

Perhaps more interesting is the minimum ISO - 50 available on professional cameras. After all, it was considered better to shoot a portrait on film, for example, on the 32nd than on the 64th and even more so on the 125th. On many (if not all) "crops" the difference in the picture is noticeable between ISO 100 and ISO 800.

  • Alexander

5100 is good for everyone, but there is no screwdriver in it (((, but in the canon there is, therefore, having D3000, I collect on D90.

    • Ivmulder

Alexander, here’s where where you read about the Canon screwdriver ??? Link to the studio. It was never in their carcasses, from the very beginning of autofocus optics, the focus motors were on Canon's lenses. EF system - eloctro-focus - Introduced in 1987, the EF lens mount is the standard lens mount on the Canon EOS family of SLR film and digital cameras. EF stands for "Electro-Focus": automatic focusing on EF lenses is handled by a dedicated electric motor built into the lens. (Automatic focusing on EF lenses is done by an electric motor built into the lens).

The most interesting thing is that this is a mistake among many Internet users.

      • Arkady Shapoval

So often it’s just more convenient to say in the language of Nikonists that the camera works with all autofocus lenses.

      • Alexander

        Thanks! Was mistaken.

  • tri-v

there is also a digital zoom of 600x in 3, which is absent in 650 and 550. At the same time, the sensitivity drops by 2 times, but 50 1.8 “turns” into 150 2.6, which is very good. Until 400 ISO, you will not see the difference.

    • Artyom

By cropping in Photoshop, the digital zoom is done)))

      • tri-v

it’s scary to imagine how you are going to increase (crop) the fullhd video in Photoshop))))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      3x or 3 to 10?

      • tri-v

3x working, 10x pixels are already climbing

    • Sergei

possess 650 less than a week there is a digital increase. Author of articles if you write from Odessa I will give the carcass to the review

      • Arkady Shapoval

        From Kiev.

      • Gregory

"I have 650 less than a week there is a digital increase."

I also own 650s. So, there is no digital zoom in it! More precisely, it is, but it can only be used for more accurate focusing. Neither video (as in 600d), nor even more photos can be taken with it!

        • Sergei

I checked it, yes, so it’s even convenient when you focus in digital enlargement, it turns out clearly the place where f. and the usual photo I liked it more so)

          • Gregory

Focusing is comfortable, no words. Nevertheless, it’s a shame that such a useful function as digital zoom in video was removed. With him, it was more or less decent to shoot distant objects with short 18-55 optics. The lack of digital zoom seriously impoverishes the device. Apparently, the Kanonovites decided to increase sales of their long-range optics. Or maybe in future firmware this function will return?

        • Alexander T.

Hello from 2021, is there digital zoom in video at least in the Canon 700d? Or only on 600d there is such a thing, as I understand it ...
At the very 600d. I often use this function, it helps when I shoot landscapes with a whale and I also want to shoot all kinds of birds on video. Then you can record a video just with good magnification: ducks, woodpeckers, sparrows and other animals, and not only animals can be photographed. :))
Okay, I hope someone answers. Thank you all, Happy Easter! :)

  • Artyom

    In the passport 3.7 fps.

In the paragraph about the buffer, you seem to have messed with the zhpegs, the zhpegs should fit more.

And the battery lasts a lot more, 500 is for maximum rava, with noise canceling with a puff at full capacity (in the mine, probably). One and a half is enough for me, and maybe more.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Check JPEG yourself, when writing a review, not only in 600d, but also in other JPEG models, less was placed in the buffer.

      • Artyom

JPEG 3.7 frames per second, a series of 34 shots
RAW 3.7 frames per second, a series of 6 shots

        Rav weighs more = /

        • Arkady Shapoval

A series, not a buffer. Take 600d, and look at the buffer indicator, it appears when you press the shutter button halfway in the lower right corner of the optical viewfinder.

          • Artyom

Perhaps he was wrong. In the evening I will study the primer again =)

    • Alexey

Do not forget that RAW is the minimally processed material from the matrix, and JEPEG is the material converted, compressed, converted by the camera processor. Those. RAW enters the buffer almost immediately from the matrix, and JEPEG will not fly into the buffer until the processor “chews”. The faster the percentage in the camera, the more frames it will display in JEPEG. And you are right about the battery, it all depends on the shooting conditions and camera settings.

      • Arkady Shapoval

In the review, I indicated that the number of shots is highly dependent on the settings.

  • Alexey

Arkady! Maybe you can help me?
    The essence of the problem:
I take RAW and convert it to JEPEG native program DPP (Digital Photo Professional) and get the result “A”.
I use the same RAW to correct white balance, sharpness, color, etc. and convert to JEPEG (I should get the result “B”), and I get the result “A”. It turns out that when converting, all settings are reset, damn what an ambush I do not understand. When converting, I select "Edit and Save to JEPEG".

    • Arkady Shapoval

DPP did not use, I can not give advice in this problem. I think someone else will answer you.

    • Taras

Tilki scho specially rebuilding, so as I didn’t bother with DPP as the main one, the last time as long as mav 1100d, everything is fine, bb, sharpe chi there yogo, everything is safe .. you don’t have to log out then you can restart the new version of. the site, but browse through the converters, ale yes yes, I’m looking for you, I want a little less)

  • Oleg

    Hello, Arkady.
If the choice were between cameras such as: Nikon D90 and Kenon 650d, what would you choose? And a couple of arguments, if you can. Thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

D90 because of the control of flashes, advanced ergonomics, fast synchron with flash, I would not want to overpay for a normal video. If the choice was between 60d \ 50d and 650, I would also take 50 \ 60.

  • Oleg

    Thank you.

  • Konstantin

I also chose between 5100 and 600. Until the last I was inclined to buy 5100, despite its shortcomings, as it has wider DD and less noise at high ISOs.

    The disadvantages of 5100 include:
    - 5100 is less and with my not very large hand the little finger constantly slides off the handle, in 600 this does not happen;
    - A joystick cut in functionality (the 600 has additional functions on it, very convenient when working through the viewfinder);
    - Aperture lag in LiveView mode - no changes are visible until you turn off and then turn on LiveView, although it may be so, and conceived, if you look at 600 through the viewfinder, the aperture also does not immediately close, but only when you press the "repeater" button, it's a pity that didn’t try to use the “repeater” button in the LiveView mode of the 5100 when I took it for testing. And yet, 600 in LvVyu mode also does not physically cover the aperture, but adjusts the brightness programmatically and at the same time changes in the depth of field are not visible, and only when you press the repeater button you can see the real picture. Although we have to give Canon its due, it adjusts the brightness accurately in software.

I can’t say anything good or bad about 600 for DD. Even under the same shooting conditions, if the shutter speed is slightly reduced or the DD is corrected, the picture is completely different (without overexposure and with more detail). And at the expense of lower noise 5100 at high ISO, it turned out to be a myth (IMHO). The fact is that 600 at high ISOs is more noisy, but less soapy. That's where the noises of 5100 went, he washed them up.

But the most important thing for me was when choosing in favor of 600, so it's not chip batteries. As it turned out, the Nikon 5100 and the cheaper cameras have chip-based batteries, and when turned on, it polls them. On 600 it can be installed through a "booster" and finger batteries, and on 5100 only original ones. Do not talk about the "hot" tossing of the second non-chip battery, the fig knows what can happen (it will shorten anything). Although the Nikon 7000 no longer checks chips, that's it.

And I ask you not to throw tomatoes at me, it's all my IMHO.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the explanation.

    • Oleg

Konstantin, I have to disagree with you about the booster. In the first slot, put the original battery, and in the second any Chinese non-chip analog. Works with a bang. The main thing is not to confuse.
But with a grip without a booster, yes!

  • Christina

so what is better to choose for a beginner D5100 or 600D?

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a beginner there will not be much difference, take what you like.

      • Lera

and what do you think? which camera would you recommend of these two?

  • Dima

which is better to take a photo of D90 or 600d?
because the video in my nikon loses to kenon.

    • Arkady Shapoval

600d shoots better video than d90

  • Dima

Which phot is better for photographing Nikon D90 or Kenon 600D?
and another question is what ph will win in the video of these two?
in my d 90 the matrix is very hot when I shoot a video and on the canon the same?

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no such thing as 'takes better pictures', as a person photographs - https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/07/what-is-main/
Video shoots better 600d. No, you can shoot video at 600d for a long time, d90 is the first Nikon SLR camera with video function, you can't expect anything good from it.

    • Sergei

My opinion is that they advertise it and you should not take it! I haven’t seen a stupid advertisement of canon yet, but the Nikon family has already gotten its own with its black sheep))

  • Vadim

Guys please tell me, I’m interested in buying a Canon 600d, I don’t know with which lens it is better to take.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can look at the universal Canon EF-S 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS

      • Vadim

        And what is the difference between the lenses: Canon EF-S 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6 and EF-S 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 kit (which comes with the 600d)?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Canon EF-S 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6 has a large zoom ratio

  • Maksim

Hello, please tell me the SLR for an amateur:
Canon EOS 650D Kit EF-S 18-55 IS II for 23990 (after gaining experience I will buy a new lens)
Nikon D5100 Kit AF-S 18-55 VR, 55-200 for 23900 (it turns out the whole set?)

For the price practical the same ergonomics are both comfortable. If possible, give a couple of arguments in favor of the chosen one.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nikon D5100 with two lenses gives a wider range of focal lengths, 5100 also makes less noise and gives more dd and color depth.

      • Maksim

And with what it will be easier with the purchase of lenses, ext. batteries and other nuances of use? I heard that Nikon does not accept third-party batteries and special lenses are needed. to have autofocus, is that so?

        • Arkady Shapoval

          These are all commercial bullshit.

          • Maksim

It’s clear, and the last question: is it better with two lenses for 23900 or with one lens 18-55 for 18500, and later to buy a better one? (for the future I am leaning towards a universal lens like 18-200, I don’t want to change lenses) Total. the budget with all lenses is about 50k (I don’t want to buy a camera of a higher level because of complexity, I don’t plan to work professionally)

            • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, you can take the simplest 18-55 to start with, and then upgrade to 18-200.

          • Maksim

            Thank you very much!

  • Alexey

Hello. A few words about the Kenon 650. If you want to shoot video with it, then take the lens with the designation ST. When shooting a photo, I try not to set ISO above 400, otherwise it is very noisy (lens kit 18-135).
When choosing a camera, I also thought which brand is better, the question was decided very quickly came to the store and just tried to hold different fotics in my hands. Nikon for me was uncomfortable in ergonomics.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks for the good advice.

  • Alexander

good afternoon. Maybe not in the subject, but the question is: Canon 600, in the viewfinder around the lower-right focus points a bright red halo when focusing on focus. the rest of the dots only turn red, without a halo. in low light it practically clogs the field of view. is this halo a norm or a defect? thanks

    • Taras

rather a defect .. my 600th is considered in this review, so I have never seen this. There will be more questions write http://vk.com/taras_electrosoul

may come in handy: my question at Canon on the official website Date: 16/01/2013 Service request:
        1-843901660
        Product: EOS 600D
Short description: In the viewfinder, a number of focus points have a pronounced red halo when focusing, which makes shooting difficult, especially in low light conditions. the service center answered that this is a feature of the camera model, however, the manual and description of the model on your website does not indicate anything about this “feature”. Is it normal for halos to appear around the focus points in the viewfinder, or is it a defect. if there is a defect, is the defect covered by the warranty? thanks

reply to my inbox from donotreply@support.canon-europe.com:
Thank you for contacting Canon Customer Support. We inform you that this focus area (pronounced red halo) is not a defect and is not eliminated.
        Yours faithfully,

Arkady, tell me please what should I take a Canon 650d 18-135 or a Nikon 5100 for portraits and girls in a small indoor and outdoor look, which camera will be more clear?

  • Vladimir

    Good afternoon!
I read the review, looked at the photo and was very upset ... Everywhere there are bright and juicy photos, but here .... Is this a feature of the camera / lens as a whole, or are they derived from the distortion of the BB in winter photos?

    • Arkady Shapoval

All factors together, also these photos with revision, this is evidenced by my EDIT inscription in the bottom line of the photos.

      • Vladimir

I have always been a fan of Boots, so I plan to take 650D, but all the pictures with 600D and 650D are very upsetting, perhaps everything is due to the lack of decent post-processing of the photo in the editors. There are a lot of beautiful and bright photos from 1000 / 1100D + kit 18-55, but with 600 / 650D I can't find anything decent….

And in your subjective opinion, is the quality competitive?

        • Vladimir

PS I still notice on these cameras a constant overexposure / overexposure.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, the quality is normal. Of course, you can always find better, but that's another story.
