Canon 7D Review

For the opportunity review of the legendary Canon EOS 7D body camera Many thanks to Georgy Abramashvili.

Canon EOS 7D review

Canon EOS 7D review

The Canon 7D is a very unusual semi-professional camera, although I personally consider the Canon 7D to be a true professional crop camera. The Canon 7D is the only camera in its subclass of Canon's DLC, the newer EOS 6D is already full-frame, and the EOS 50D and eos 60D lower level.

The Canon 7D uses an 18MP CMOS sensor. Now with a large number of megapixels you will not surprise anyone, especially after the release Nikon D800... For most amateur tasks, 18MP is quite a lot, but professionals can squeeze all their potential out of 18MP. The camera can form images 5184 by 3456 pixels (17.9MP). Cameras have the same matrix. Canon 600D, 650D, 550D и 60D. True, it is worth noting that in Canon 650D a slightly modified version of the matrix is used, which made it possible to double the maximum ISO value. You can take a look at my interesting article, which conducts an experiment on 'megapixel' - Battle of Megapixels.

Canon 7D attracts itself very high speed burst shooting. Shooting speed reaches 8 fps - This is an excellent indicator for a crop camera. No other crop camera with APS-C sensor from Canon can shoot at such high speed, only Canon APS-H and APS cameras can do it. Interestingly, Nikon has as many as 6 APS-C cameras that can reach this speed, but Nikon has a lot of limitations and nuances to achieve this burst speed.

Canon EOS 7D sample photo

However, in order to process such a large amount of data when shooting at 8 fps, the Canon 7D uses two DIGIC 4 processors. The weakness of the Canon 7D is a small frame bufferhowever, the new firmware slightly increases the number of frames during continuous shooting. Canon 7D outperforms even some of its full-frame brothers in performance - see the section for more details. the performance of all Canon.

Canon 7D is very well made, the camera body is made of magnesium alloy. The camera body has weather protection. In the hand, the Canon 7D sits very comfortably, it feels like a serious level device.

An additional monochrome display is simply an indispensable item for quickly adjusting basic camera parameters. The additional display has a backlight function. I really appreciate advanced cameras with an additional display, top-level cameras even have 2 such displays. The camera has a variety of controls that you can quickly get used to.

Canon 7D has a 3-inch display with 920 thousand dots. Now you won't surprise anyone with such a display, it is very convenient to view the footage, dig into the menu settings and shoot video.

Canon 7D can use ISO 100 to 6400 units and expand the value to 12.800. I can’t say that the camera has a low noise level at high ISOs, since now there are cameras that make noise an order of magnitude lower, especially considering the full-frame line of cameras. Minimum excerpt is 1 \ 8000, which is an excellent indicator.

The optical viewfinder deserves special attention - it has 100% frame coverage, which means that no extra details on the sides of the frame will get into the picture. For example, even on my full frame Nikon D700 the viewfinder does not cover 100% and you have to remember that after pressing the shutter button, extra details will appear at the edges of the picture.

Canon 7D uses 14-bit color depth, the camera supports 14-bit RAW (CR2). A deep color depth is very important in image processing. By the way, I updated the review Nikon D1X, with new software it can use 16-bit color depth.

Of course, the Canon 7D's very strong point is video. The camera can shoot Full HD 1920 × 1080 29.97 fps in MOV format, H.264 codec. Also, you can shoot 1280 × 720 and 640 × 480 at 60 or 50 frames per second. When shooting video, all basic parameters are available, the camera has a special button for starting / stopping video recording

Focusing is based on a 19-point sensor, with all 19 points being cruciform. The focus menu has several interesting settings, during the review I still did not understand the full possibility of the focus system working methods. The Canon 7D does not have an autofocus backlight.

Measurement exposure built on the basis of a 63-segment sensor, the sensor takes into account the focus, color and brightness of objects in the field of view of the camera. Many Canon EOS cameras use 63-segment metering exposure. You need to get used to the operation of an exnometer of any camera, just like the work of an automatic white balance.

Canon 7D camera has huge amount of useful features:

  • Matrix dust cleaning system
  • Great battery with over 1000 shots. The number of frames shot is highly dependent on many parameters.
  • Automatic bracketing exposure и white balance
  • Creative auto mode and image management system
  • Automatic ISO first versions available from 100 to 3200 units
  • The camera uses fast memory cards CF. True, the camera has only one slot for memory cards
  • INFO key, with which you can set the basic camera settings, a very convenient thing
  • Canon 7D can automatically correct vignetting with 'Peripheral Illumination Correction'
  • Auto brightness correction, allows you to expand the dynamic range of the image
  • Fine-tuning the focus, the camera remembers 20 lenses
  • An optional battery pack can be attached to the camera
  • and many, many others

The camera using the built-in flash may control external flashes remotely. Only 4 Canon cameras can do this: Canon EOS 600D, Canon EOS 650D, Canon EOS 60DCanon EOS 7D. By the way, with Nikon, as many as 12 models have such a function, however, Canon EOS 7D can control 3 groups of flashes, and Nikon's built-in flash can only control 2 groups. In this case, the Canon EOS 7D can use high speed sync with external flashes in this mode excerpt with flash not limited to threshold XSync in 1 \ 250 seconds and can even be set to 1 \ 8000. High-speed sync is a must have for flash photography during the day.

There is a modification of Canon EOS 7D, which is called Canon EOS 7DSV, which is aimed at the use by professional photographers in the studio, but I do not see any serious differences, except for the barcode scanner and a slightly different menu. Also, Canon EOS 7D of old releases can be updated using firmware version 2.03, the new firmware adds a couple of useful little things.

Personal experience

Personally, it seemed to me that the camera control system was not very convenient, most likely this is due to the fact that I was simply used to the Nikon system, which I use most often. In general, the Canon EOS 7D is just a fairy tale, especially for advanced amateurs who are trying to squeeze the maximum out of cameras. A simpler alternative is Canon 60D.

Prices for modern Canon cameras in popular stores can look at this link.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions:

Canon EOS 7D is an excellent camera with tremendous burst shooting speed, unmatched in terms of speed among other crop cameras from Canon. The quality of video and photos is at a high level, the Canon EOS 7D has an excellent focusing system and an excellent protected body. You can write about advantages for a very long time, in a word - I recommend.

  • Gennady

Can you explain why the “Low-Light ISO” of the 7D is higher than that of the D300s?

Nikon's sensor is much larger (by 10%), the pixel size is also much larger, and for some reason the sensitivity is higher for Kenon ... how so?

  • Gennady

It is clear that “dxomark” measured it this way. But physically, the larger the pixel, the greater the sensitivity. Or is it not that simple?

  • Andrei

Gennady, you know, “dxOmark” is a complete FUCK !!. This is also a question. You know, there is such a company, Haselblad, I looked at its characteristics from the point of view of “dxOmark” and was surprised…. professional medium format camera for 50 thousand dollars, lost in all respects to some amateur small format cameras .... weird .. really ?? The best comparison is when you take a camera and take a photo of it and watch the result.

    • Jacks

I agree, only technodrocers who are preoccupied with megapixels and DD look at it :)

    • Dima

so it has a CCD matrix which does not differ in low noise and dd
      not surprising)

      • Victor

Who has the sisidi matrix? o_O

  • Dmitriy

I don’t know if someone is reading about it, or not already, but having used Nikons for more than 15 years (the latter were exactly the D300S and D7000, I had to buy two 7D mark2. I am absolutely delighted with this camera! For me, as a military reporter I found everything I wanted there. Except that there is no remote control. The only “but” after Nikon is a stupid control system. You can get used to it, but it is objectively less convenient.
And the camera itself is beautiful! Excellent autofocus (61 points, all cross). Sigma 150-600 a few units overshot times. The buffer is just endless (I did 40 frames in a row). While shooting motocross, but in the near future I will go again to the war. Let's see how it behaves. I am very sorry that Nikon does not let out anything close to him.

    • Jury

+ Excellent autofocus (61 points, all cross)
+ The buffer is just endless (40 frames in a row did)
      - stupid control system

Is that all the difference between the 7D and the D300S and the D7000, or did you like something else?

      • Dmitriy

I liked him all. I found in it everything that was missing in my Nikonas. This is really a different generation technique. Well, there are some points like the joystick creaking strangely, but it doesn't work.
I do not write there about skinton and so on - this is all nonsense in my case.
In general, in addition to stupid management and the need to poke oneself in the face with nails (this is a real problem in long business trips, when it is not always possible to wash your hands elementarily), the camera is good for everyone. I am very, very sorry that Nikon with a similar set of features can offer only four times more expensive and twice as heavy hefty D4S.

        • Jury

Dmitry, it’s not clear from your words, what did you like about the 7D besides the above-mentioned advantages (“Excellent autofocus”, “The buffer is simply infinite”) and the opinion of “technology of another generation”. I look at the snapsort of the difference between the Canon EOS 7D Mark II and the Nikon D7100 and I see a gap of just one point in favor of Canon. Compared to this site, the 7D is faster and has more focus points, while the D7100 is better in terms of DD, image quality, noise level, and the battery is more powerful and cheaper. What exactly are you talking about besides 65 points and 10 fps?

          • Dmitriy

I do not care about such indicators as DD, noise level and image quality (I don’t understand the meaning of the latter at all). I'm interested in how the camera behaves in specific conditions, rather than pixel-by-pixel sharpness and the ability to tighten something by 0,3 stops. In my case, this does not matter at all, unlike the ability to take a few clear frames in a couple of seconds.
I shoot, and do not look for some fleas sitting for hours behind the monitor. Therefore, all these claim tests for me do not matter what.

            • Jury

I understand you, thanks for sharing your opinion.

              • Dmitriy

If interested, then in a month and a half I will unsubscribe. Then it will be clear how the camera behaves, and what the editors say about the photos from it.

    • Vitaly

What's true is true. Canon's management after Nikon is simply poor. I still can't get used to it, although I have both Nikon D700 and Canon 5D Mark 3 in my hands. Nikon outperforms in ergonomics in all respects, and when you take Sapop in your hands, the first 15 minutes the mats are standing on what the light is on. Later, however, you get used to it, but still poor.

      • Jacks

Vitaly, this is very subjective) I took a friend from here to drive the D7100, well, after my 7D control seemed very uncomfortable. Therefore, firstly, to whom it is more convenient, and secondly, when you get used to something, you involuntarily begin to consider it the best, so if you start arguing on this topic, you get an empty holivar, which are already millions on the open spaces of the network, so unite against Nikon vs. Holivars Canon !!!
        ZY
If anyone remembers, Canon originally made carcasses, and Nikon made lenses.

        • Stas

Nuuu is just a classic of Holivar))) I have 7100 and I can’t take Kenon into my hands, on 7xx models there is almost perfect ergonomics, everything is at hand (except for the fucking ISO button, but for 2013 it was visible to Nikon))

          • Alexander

the ergonomics of Nikon IMHO is better. the only thing that I really liked about the canons is the joystick in the older models.

            • Dima

Nikon is alien to me as if trying to get used to and love him)

        • Vladislav

Gentlemen, comrades, you'd better write about the results obtained when filming with these gorgeous cameras, and not about the fact that eggs interfere with a bad dancer. You need to use spy microcameras, click-take a picture, and no problems with ergonomics and settings. So soon agree that, they say, and on this camera they did not make a stand for a stoparik - it would be a class!

      • Alexey

If purely objective, then the ergonomics of the canon are much better. But this is from an objective point of view, just people who are accustomed to Nikon can think differently

      • Victor

“Nikon outperforms in ergonomics in all respects, and as soon as you take Sapop in your hands, the first 15 minutes the mats are standing on what the light is on. Later, it is true, you get used to it, but it's still pathetic. "

        .

        • Dmitry Kostin

It is very strange. I had no problem. Perhaps a matter of habit, perhaps experience, perhaps because sometimes I help with commercial filming and 5D mk3, 5DsR fell into my hands and asked to film friends and not so people (tfp or whatever it is called) on 600d, and 450 / 550d

    • Sergey Gurevich

Dmitry, if it doesn’t make it difficult, please contact me by e-mail (fotoulit@yandex.ru). I’m not friends with the forums, I hope you will see a comment. There is talk about the report, according to your specialization. PS: Arkady, sorry for the offtopic on your page. Thank you so much for your reviews.

    • Ram

      500, clearly superior

  • Dmitriy

I would like to ask who used it if the camera is with touch control, but the hands are really dirty and there is no place to wash it once, is it possible to do without a sensor or are such cameras without a sensor already uncontrollable? Is it worth it to use in difficult conditions (or when it's cold and fingers cold)?

    • Pastor

It depends on what specific devices you are talking about. Speaking of DSLRs, the sensor simply simplifies and duplicates everything that can be done with the buttons, so you don't have to touch it. But for some soap dishes, the sensor is the only way to change a number of settings.

      • Dmitriy

        Thank you!

  • Anna

They wrote somewhere that 7D necessarily requires confirmation of focus when working with manual lenses. And what - it turns out that the shutter will not work without this confirmation? If so, is it in all shooting modes, or is everything not so sad in M? I'm thinking about buying such a camera, but in addition to autofocus, I have two manual lenses - Helios, with which I constantly work, especially when shooting portraits, and Lensbaby, which I also use quite often. If you can buy a chip adapter for Helios, then Lensbaby was originally sold with an EF mount without a chip, and I can't imagine how you can get focus confirmation with it. It turns out that 7D will not work for me? If this is really so, is this a feature of 7D, or are there other “older” Canon models that behave the same way? Now there is a question of a leisurely choice of a new camera instead of the old 400D. The system is definitely Canon, but about the model there are options. And normal operation with manual lenses is one of the important criteria.

    • Vladimir.

I heard about such a misfortune on the Canon 6D, but they are deceiving it - look on the Internet. And about the EF without a chip - buy a dandelion and glue it (even a pattern is sold there).

      • Anna

Thanks! I thought, thought, and bought a Canon 50D. Wonderful workhorse. Sorry, there is no corresponding review. With manual optics there are no problems.

I look at the photos of all modern 24 megapixel devices Nikon, Sony, 18-20 megapixel Canon with a whale lens. No better than the Nikon D90 or other 12 megapixels. Something is just worse. On Toshiba matrices with short-lived banding rushing. And on 7D Canon banding. Amateurs with money flooded all the forums. Mad price for modern photographic equipment And for what? For autofocus?
At one time, zenith filmed better. With prof. With optics, everything is certainly not bad. But not everyone is given a good carcass.

  • Ivan Antonov

The previous one without a name hit by accident.

Have you decided to SPAM all comments with 24MP cameras?

    • Igor

Well, shoot on Zenith or D90, what's the problem?)

I don’t understand one thing: if your cameras are completely suitable for you, then shouldn’t you still be on other people's cameras? Or is everything so bad that you have to constantly prove yourself and others something?

  • photo shooter

People who use C Canon 7 d Mark 2, pliz throw off a couple of unfinished jpegs or write reviews !!!!! Thank you !!!!!

  • Koba

Dear Arkady! It seems that this camera does not have a conventional LED autofocus illumination lamp, but in principle it does have an autofocus illumination - in the form of “Pulsed firing of the built-in flash”. There is also one important point - when the camera was released, it did not have the Auto ISO function, but in the updated firmware version 2.0.3 it appeared, so the company eliminated this rather significant drawback later. Yes, there is no precise indication of the Auto ISO limits, but the maximum limit is simply respected and the camera automatically adjusts the sensitivity in the range of 100-1600 (if you set 1600 as the maximum), but this is already enough to use auto ISO in manual or other shooting modes. The only thing this camera lacks (and this is very strange for an almost professional camera!) Is the multiple exposure. By the way, I recently attended a shutter replacement on an old 7D. I can say that it is assembled extremely tightly, there are such “fortifications” inside that it can be considered a real tank among cameras. That camera had a range of around 380000, but the camera was completely worn out, apparently it worked in the most difficult conditions, including the south of China, that is, where the air humidity is always very high and a special electric box for storing equipment is very popular among photographers, with function of decreasing air humidity.

  • Jacks

Oh, I was just thinking about buying this, I took it from a friend to take it, I need to change my Canon 450D: D to something more modern and faster

    • anonym

Faster? And the fig? And in a hurry to live, and in a hurry to feel? I would not change.

  • Alexey

Hello everyone! Who has 7k kenon, tell me whether it is worth taking almost 54tys with mileage? Anyway, how reliable is 7ka

    • anonym

for the money for which you will take 7d, you won’t find a similar DSLR

    • Yuji

Since 2012, the 7D has been my faithful companion on all campaigns. Passed and rode with me from Iceland to the Himalayas. Never let you down. There was something that fell, but there were small scratches, but it works fine to this day. Of the vulnerable spots, I would name the release button - there were a couple of situations when moisture got under the button and the camera began to behave like a drunk. I guessed to blow out the space under the button, a certain amount of moisture came out, I wiped everything, wrapped it in a towel for the night, worked as usual in the morning.

Half a year ago, I handed over to the workshop to clean the matrix, at the same time I asked if it was time to change the shutter. The master said that 150 runs for him is an absolute norm (in my case it was about 000), so there’s time.

  • Alina

Please tell me about the CF memory card account. What and at what speed is better to take for 7d?

  • Sanya Beard

Hello everyone !!! tell me how much 7D go by mileage? Who had such a device or who takes pictures

  • Vlad

Seven is very reliable and a good camera. I’ve been shooting it for several years and
I am very happy as an amateur she suits me. And if with good optics she will give an excellent result. For the money that she is currently selling this is a very good option. I recommend

  • Fishery

    Interesting article, thank you.

  • Sergei

Tell me tentatively, within what amount can I buy Canon 7d with a 10-20 sigma f3.5-5.6 lens.? I heard for 40 thousand, but I think it is expensive or am I mistaken?

    • Julia G.

You are mistaken, this is a normal price)

    • Dusik

I bought a 7D for 25tr. with a 50mm lens. battery grip, flash drives, external flash.

  • Julia G.

I’m looking for a comrade, I’m counting on sports and reportage shooting, I decided on the lens, but there is a big question: what is better to take Canon 7d or 70d? I really hope for your advice)

    • Victor

Take 7D, it is a cut above for 70d. Itself when it passed from 40d to 7d. As Arkady wrote in his review, the 7d camera is a professional level, fast-firing, with a large viewfinder, accurate and fast focus. The picture is the same as 70d, but in use the sky and the earth

  • Fedor

People tell me if you take canon 7d with a bat pen and a 64GB flash drive for 11000rub but with a mileage of 130000 is this a normal price? Anyway, how much does it cost to replace a shutter, who can change it?

    • anonym

      About 250 dollars.
Better look for a fresher camera.

  • Fedor

I bought yesterday with a mileage of 145t for 8 from whom I bought him 2 and on the second mileage of more than 700000, he sells them and takes 5d m4.

  • Fedor

By the way, he sold me the second for 3 at all. I do not have critical mileage under the video

  • Koba

Just for the sake of information - now the 7D is in excellent condition and with very low mileage can be found in China for $ 300, sometimes even less. And the quality of the picture from this camera and the color, and the detailing is very high up to ISO800 and is not very lost until ISO1600, so it is quite a workhorse in our time, and there is nothing to say about the camera itself, just a top-end camera in all respects, with excellent autofocus, and the viewfinder is one of the largest and brightest among cropped cameras, unlike the fifth series, dust does not pass and is made extremely hard.

  • DMITRY

GOOD DAY. SHOW THERE IS KENON 7D, IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE A RUSSIAN MENU ON IT ???
    LAST FIRMWARE!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, of course you can. Just choose Russian language

      • DMITRY

there are hieroglyphs and english everything

        • Michael

Is the firmware for the Russian segment?

  • Vadim

    Arkady, I need advice. I am a amateur photographer. I have 40D, 18-135stm, 24 2.8 stm and 85 1.8 usm.
I like to shoot mountain landscapes, nature.
In 40D, well, everything is just fine.
There was a desire to shoot a video of wildlife (followed by video editing and overlay music), again, primarily for myself.

    1. If you buy 7D (used, naturally, thousands for 15-20 on Avito), then 40D will have to retire, because I will not drag 2 heavy vehicles into the mountains.

Are the 40D and 7D photos very different? The behavior of the camera during overexposure is important. Judging by your photos in the review, the color of the 7D is no worse. I want to say right away that I’m not looking at a 100% photo with a magnifying glass.

I met opinions on the forums (regulars) that it makes no sense to buy 7D without L-optics (and even that it shoots worse with cheap glasses than 40D). The main lens I have is 18-135stm. And for the video I plan to use it.
And the noise of the forties on iso 1600 and higher is attractive to me and I do not suffer from it. Compared to xxxD models at high ISOs on the 40s, I like the noise better.

    2. If you buy 600 - 650D for video (8-14 thousand), then they certainly won't replace the convenience of 40s in photos and I will have to carry 2 cameras: one for photos, the second for video.

    3. Buy 60D (on Avito on average 15 thousand) - like all in one. The advantage over the 7D is the rotating screen.

    I don't strive for a full frame - it's too expensive for a hobby.
The cheapest option 2, and which one is more correct? I bow to the 1st.

Not Arkady, but I will express myself) Photos differ markedly. I at one time did not like the seven from the word at all. If you do not look at the pixels, then L-optics will not be useful to you. Maybe you should like 70D? I liked the photos from him, almost like in old cameras and for video it’s better, because decent focus in the show. But it's more expensive, really

        Thank you for responding!
So you say that after 40D 7D may not come in….
70D - I can't pull it yet…. Maybe it’s worth saving up and taking it next year.
Autofocus in the video is not critical for me, I want to shoot in a manual.
60D is very different from the photo with 70D?

The 60d matrix seems to be the same as the 7d. I didn’t hold it in my hands, but I think they are similar. 600d there

do not mislead people - the picture quality is decided not only by the matrix, in 7d it is noticeably better. So the best colorimeter is worth it, and the processing and preservation of colors is an order of magnitude better, autofocus is also better on the head, the camera is 2 heads better, it works faster, the viewfinder was not standing next to it, etc. You can't compare the 7D and 60D, but if you need a camera primarily for video, then take the 60D.

So after much deliberation, I decided to buy a 650D. I remembered a wonderful phrase: “The best camera is always with me”.
And the magpie will have to be retired. I think to sell it with a whale lens 18-55 is ll, thousands for 7. Fortunately, the camera is in excellent, almost collectible condition, with a film on the screen and a range of 14k (native shutter).
And I took the 650D for 11 thousand. He is coming to me from Lipetsk to Moscow.
Having a 650D, I will have both photos and videos. In addition, less weight. If there is a difference between 40D and 650D in photographs, then you just have to get used to and continue to go further into the mountains and shoot landscapes. Thanks to all!
