Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor

Nikon 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G vr AF-S DX Nikkor is the third version whale lens from Nikon introduced in the fall of 2007. The lens was introduced with the camera. Nikon D60 and feels good on any Nikon DX series camera.

The previous two lens versions have 1 Nikon ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and 1 aspherical element, and Nikon 18-55mm version 1: 3.5-5.6G vr It has only one aspherical element and does not have ED glasses. The optical schemes of all three lenses can be viewed here.

But unlike versions ED и ED II, Nikon 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G vr It has an image stabilizer that allows you to deal with blurry pictures when shooting with your hands. It is stated that the stabilization system can compensate up to 3 steps by shutter speed, that is, VR will allow you to shoot with shutter speed 8 times longer than required in the absence of a stabilization system. In fact, the stabilizer works a little more modestly than stated. Gimbal operation on Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR may jerk a little in the optical viewfinder - this is normal.

Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor

Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor

Focal length from 18 to 55 mm very handy when used on Nikon DX cameras. This range allows you to get photos with a wide angle of view at 18mm. The zoom on the lens is quite modest, only 3x. because of crop factor EGF lens will be 27-82.5mm.

Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR uses filters with a diameter of 52 mm, for a start I recommend to get protective filter.

Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR body is made of plastic, even the mount is plastic. The lens itself is made in Thailand. The Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR may include a plastic hood HB-45.

Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR lens has mediocre aperture, at 18 mm you can open the maximum aperture up to F / 3.5, and at 55 mm only up to F / 5,6. You can close the aperture up to F / 22 at 18 mm and up to F / 36 at 55 mm. The image stabilizer comes to the aid of a small aperture. But the diaphragm of the lens has 7 rounded petals that allow you to get even circles in the blur zone, you can even squeeze some bokeh by 55 mm.

Focusing

Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G focuses quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave / ultrasonic motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

The lens will automatically focus on all Nikon DSLR cameraseven on amateur series models Nikon DXthat do not have a built-in focus motor: D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600as well as mirrorless cameras Nikon Z with adapter FTZ / FTZ II.

Auto Focus Speed - average. Focusing speed is enough for comfortable work in most photo tasks. The speed of the lens is similar to other similar lenses from Nikon. While creating a review on cameras Nikon D90, D200, D40x, D700 the lens focuses tenaciously and does not release objects from the field of sharpness. Focusing strength is significantly reduced in low light.

During focusing, the trunk of the lens spins and drives forward. The focus ring is uncomfortable, very narrow. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The minimum focusing distance is only 28 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 3.2 magnificationThat is a very good indicator. Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G does not have a window with a distance scale, depth of field scale and other useful marks.

In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 45 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it abuts.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'A - M'... In the 'A' position, autofocus works, and in the M position, manual focus. There is no continuous manual focus control. During autofocus, the rotating focus ring must not be touched.

Examples on the FX camera

All photos in the gallery below are shot on Nikon D700 in FX and DX modes, this is indicated in the imprinted data. Photos without processing, only reduced the size to 3 megapixels. This time I got bored of writing a review about a whale lens and tried to squeeze the most out of it on a full-frame camera. As it turned out, starting from 24 mm focal length the lens is quite suitable for use on a full frame, the vignette can be corrected on a computer, and at 55 mm vignetting is almost imperceptible.

Image quality

Oddly enough, the lens is sharp enough in the center of the frame at any focal length. At the edges and corners of the image, sharpness drops significantly. The lens holds back light well, has good contrast and good color rendition. It suffers slightly from chromatic aberration and distortion at 18 mm. Chromatic aberrations are most noticeable at the corners and edges of the image. The distortion is pretty small for a lens of this class. Overall image quality is acceptable.

Personal experience

I love the simple and lightweight Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX Nikkor and the like. They allow you to get excellent images in wide-angle range on Nikon crop cameras.

As a wide-angle, nothing is cheaper and better than the Nikon 18-55mm VR. Of course, the lens does not have super aperture, but it is not always needed and not always important. I had a similar lens for a long time Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6GII ED AF-S DX Zoom-NikkorI constantly took hiking, you quickly get used to the low zoom ratio.

Results

Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor SWM Aspherical is a balanced kit lens with stabilizer. Whale lenses have a bad reputation that doesn't always match the truth. I recommend Nikon 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR as the first budget lens for Nikon DX cameras.

10 main advantages
  1. low cost in the secondary market
  2. convenient set of focal lengths
  3. compact sizes
  4. bayonet type hood
  5. optical design uses an aspherical element
  6. good maximum magnification ratio for macro shooting, which is 1: 3.2
  7. ultrasonic built-in focus motor
  8. the presence of a lens profile in most popular RAW converters (certainly there is in ACR, Lightroom)
  9. built-in image stabilizer
  10. good optical performance (good sharpness on covered apertures in the center of the frame, normal sharpness on open apertures in the center of the frame, other parameters are within the normal range for this kind of lens)

10 main disadvantages

  1. small stroke of the focus ring, insufficiently convenient manual focus
  2. low focusing speed (at the same time convenient enough for a large number of amateur photo tasks)
  3. plastic mount
  4. no hood included
  5. rotation of the focus ring during auto focus and as a result there is no constant manual focus mode M / A or A / M or the like (appeared in Nikon AF-P 18-55 / 3.5-5.6G VR)
  6. lack of dust and moisture protection (for example, such SMC Pentax-DA 1: 3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL WR)
  7. the optical circuit is devoid of one low dispersion element, which was the previous version Nikon 18-55GII
  8. lens weight increased by 60 grams compared to the previous version Nikon 18-55GII
  9. rear lens movement while changing focal length
  10. palpable barrel-shaped distortion 18 mm focal length, tangible vignetting 18 mm focal length, poor resolution at 18 mm in the corners of the frame on open apertures. Other optical flaws inherent in similar lenses

people .. who can tell the thread?
I bought a Nikon D3100 with a Nikon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX lens, and I would like to know as a novice photographer .. what settings do I need to set in the camera to get pictures in both good and good quality. I would like to know at least the approximate settings for good illumination in the daytime, in the bad evening and in the studio (I certainly don’t say that you need to choose according to the conditions .. but still), and in the future does it make sense to buy a better lens .. and if so, which one (I mean for portraiture in nature and in the studio?

    • AS

And I bought watercolors for 15 rubles and a brush for 1.5 rubles. Tell me how to paint a good picture. I want to draw nature and people, both on the street and in the studio. And more ... Maybe I should buy more expensive paints?

      • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, take the L series of paint, and do not take the 'Konin', they sinyat, take the 'Conan' :)
If on business - then there are no universal settings. To begin to understand with advise modes P, A, S, M - https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/03/rezhimy-fotoapparata-p-a-s-m/ and with image enhancement settings - https://radojuva.com.ua/2012/01/hitrosti-na-nikon/

        • anonym

          Thanks Arkady .. I’ll experiment)))

      • anonym

Thank you .. I will draw then oil))) ahah

      • willow

Oh, I laughed at the colors)))
Everything comes with practice, take more pictures and learn, and then you will know everything from memory. And about the 18-55 lens, he takes great pictures, just the case is not very attractive and plastic.

YOU BATHKA-eb ... en! You can not answer without fucking ... ov !?

  • Grundefuht

I put this lens on the D800 and am immensely pleased with the cheap wide-angle option.
as correctly observed starting at 24 mm (or rather not say) it works without the "black corner" and vignetting corrected without problems.
to top shirikov he certainly far, but given the price (3tyr), he is magnificent.

PS and he does not mind)

    • Lynx

      I'm sobbing, Senor Pereiro.

      • Grundefuht

Not if you have the desire to give me a top Shirikov on FF - I'm always open for contacts)
or let's say if you want to sculpt me panoramas from fifty dollars - I also do not mind

        • Lynx

I just get lost every time from people who have found from fifty to hundreds of tons of wood (not sickly we drag the funds, if you think about it) on the "super-megatushka" and then begin to sting at the glass.

          • Grundefuht

All will be. but not at once.
I don’t doubt you, you _ immediately_ to the carcass buy a set of glasses two hundred and two hundred.
And with your permission, I’ll dig in order not to get into loans. Good?

        • Lynx

Mdya ... In people you understand even shittier than in approaches to photography. (((

          • Grundefuht

I’m right in anticipation that you will begin to teach me how to spend my money on my own equipment)
And that .. I’m kind of not going to understand you, don’t flatter yourself.

        • Lynx

There is such a good proverb: fools learn - only to spoil. So don't get your hopes up.

          • Grundefuht

            here you go(
So here is my answer to you - when you buy yourself a carcass - then decide what to hang on it and what not. and that every rogue is ready to give advice and to condemn.
The article was about the lens and it was said that he was pulling on FF.
I checked and confirm - yes, it pulls and it is very good.
and your argument - it's like talking about the taste of pineapple when you have not tried them.

        • Lynx

However, there is so much butthert from a rogue who has accumulated on an FF carcass and is offended that no one appreciated its steepness. )))

          • Grundefuht

Yes you, old man, boor, however.
Good luck in your personal life, and do not forget to envy silently = *

        • Lynx

Pfff ..)) It would be someone to envy. The happy owner of the 18-55th, og.

          • Grundefuht

I'm not talking about things, I'm talking about the fact that someone doesn’t tear a fart for any reason, since to you =)
"Ah ah - they live wrongly")) and then a buhurt crackle)

          • Julia

And you have a suitable name. Something always interferes with a bad dancer, but he does not know that he does not know how to dance. You need to be able to shoot, then any lens in your hands can be an instrument for creating a masterpiece.

  • Julia

I apologize with the Tool; otherwise, take this for truth.

    • Lynx

You do not have to apologize, it would be somewhat unethical for me to take offense at a person who gets into someone else's conversation and squeaks "instrument" with a capital letter)).

      • Julia

Uh, yes, here in general, everything is running, it makes no sense to continue palemics. There is such a thing - a typo is called, and in that case you would learn how to place the commas correctly. From your answer, I understand that you have nothing to answer on the topic of correspondence. And do not litter the site with your illiterate heap. For a cultured person, it just became insulting, who, due to his upbringing, did not send you three letters. Good luck!

        • Lynx

There is no topic of correspondence. Nothing to answer.
oh how brought up however you are! )))

        • Grundefuht

          Thank you for understanding :)

          • Magic

Mr. Grundefuht :) never argue with fools (in your case a boor) others may not understand who is who! :)

          • serge

It seems that the Lynx saw the camera only from the side of the lens.

  • Kettle

This whale has a third child with 5100. Pros answer a couple of questions:
    1) After the soap dish kodak z 1285 photos appear much darker - that can be done (no photoshop) configured ?;
    2) in view of the lack of fast synchronization with the flash, does it make sense to just buy china-puff? what can squeeze out with her?
    3) what lens to buy from shovels to improve detail?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Nadia

Carefully try to read all the instructions that came on the CD with the camera. And not just to read and learn, not letting go of the camera hand. Check white balance, Picture mode, set D-Lighting active, go straight to A, S modes to start. Focus on indicators of exposure meter in the viewfinder to the slider was in the middle. Shutter speed + ISO + D = Exposure. Try: shortening or lengthening the shutter speed, opening or closing the aperture, raising (preferably not higher than 400) or lowering the ISO. Although the automation is not always right, but you also have a histogram, use it as a guide. And all you get. And also add screen brightness in the settings. Perhaps this is another reason that the display in front of you is a dark photo. China - I puff better not to buy! As long as you can possibly do nikon sb - 400, and it is to buy a lens with velcro 15 * 17 for vertical shots. Although it all depends on the goals, what do you want to shoot? And how have accumulated, you can buy sb -600. Quite even nothing! And from shovels (from personal experience) - excellent Helios 44 - 5 MC 58 mm 1: 2. And the Jupiter 21 M 4-200 lens simply amazes with its details - as for me, this is a miracle, I just don't let go. Gorgeous lens !!!! And the picture is a lovely sight !!!! In my opinion, the Niknov 18-55 kit lens is not suitable for him, unless there is autofocusing, but this is not the most important thing. Jupiter has disadvantages, of course, heavy, manual focusing, I shoot without a lens, it spoils everything, but without infinity there are advantages. Helios is much easier and take them to a real pleasure. Try !!! It's a matter of taste !!!

    • Grundefuht

And I would advise for thrifty beginners China-puff YN560-III.
~ $ 70 is bought on an alibaba.
The head is spinning, it is breathing well (but only in manual mode !!)
It has a built-in radio synchronizer YN-603 (in the same place for $ 30 you can take two pieces. Again, the remote descent will be)

    • Sergei

55mm and 200 compare is full zen. Shove the uncanny

  • Nadia

For Anonymous, I would advise you to buy after the whale lens 50 F / 1.4 AF-S and immediately flash Sb- 800DX. This option is also possible: 35 F / 1.8 AF-S - by purchasing this lens, you will save a little.

  • Andrei

Hello. When shooting on the specified lens, I encountered such a problem. On the focal range 45-55 and the aperture from minimum to 9, a very strong soap. When shooting growth portraits of the face are blurry. I shot a standard-size newspaper for the whole frame for the test, we barely read the text. Acceptable diaphragm 11 and above. There are no complaints about other ranges. Sinned on focusing, but after many tests (various modes) I was convinced of regularity. Is this normal for a given lens or marriage? Thanks.

    • Lynx

      marriage.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not normal, hand over its lens to the service.

  • Ayusha

Hello, I, as a polishing photographer, would like to know for Nikon D 3200 which lens to choose, for photo shoots, with beautiful bokeh (once washed in the background) and a clear face for portraits, I can’t decide on what ?! Please advise! Your photos are great, and which camera flash to buy? Thank you very much in advance!!!

I'm not a pro, so experts will correct me if that, but if it’s cheaper then I recommend the Nikkor 50mm f / 1.8D AF lens ($ 100). If it is possible to spend more then Nikkor 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S ($ 350-400). On-camera flashes are also different. For starters, you need Nissin Spidelite Di600 Nikon ($ 150-170). The lenses I named are fixes (they do not have a zoom, and they are rather narrow profile), so I can recommend a more versatile version of the Tamron AF SP 17-50mm F / 2,8 XR Di II LD Asp for Nikon ($ 390).

      • anonym

Yes. You are not a pro. and not an amateur, otherwise they would not recommend 50 / 1,8D, because he would not have autofocus on the Nikon d3200.

        • Avi

you say so, as if he won’t shoot without autofocus, since when did manual focus become something so terrible? I’m shooting portraits on Helios, naturally manual focusing and what’s wrong with that, I wrote it (50 / 1,8D) as a budget option simply.

          • Lynx

If only because for manual shooting and you need to take Helik Industrial or Dzhup.
Take autofocus lens of which autofocus will not work on this carcass and at the same time it is more expensive manual Lenses - stupidity (to the same and the picture he is worse than at the same Gelika)
And for normal, without hemorrhoids, shooting should be taken 50 / 1,8g or 85 / 1,8g.

            • Sergei

And will autofocus work on the D3100 of such a lens: Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f / 4-5.6G?

              • Arkady Shapoval

                yes it will.

    • Oleg

on d3200, that would be sharp and beautiful bokeh, you definitely need to take 17-55 2.8. and even better, instead of 17-55, buy good books from photographs

  • Sergei

    Arkady, thank you!

  • Igor

Thanks for your review. Recently I piobrol a pair of lenses (gelios81 district, Sigma 28-70 1: 3.5) and reached his hands to compare with the whale, actually printed target ISO_12233 somewhere with 1.6m potestit all three. One frustration - the whale is complete junk !!! Even grandfather's sigma little better whale and Helios two whales on sharpening his belt zaphnot on stub whale or any diafregma does not help. To be honest, I had a better opinion of the Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G VR DX.

  • Sergei

I use this lens for a year and it often smears focus I thought that I was with crooked hands but after reading a little in the net so I wasn’t the only one who did tests at an angle of 45 degrees so the interesting thing is that with d5100 at the center point that the cross always smears in front focus and on others through time but it doesn’t even know what to do.

    • anonym

there were 2 with 3100-18 whales, one still with me, everything is perfectly in focus already 55 thousand like. But the second one was a little smeared, the same thing when changing lenses, so most likely it's in the carcass ((

  • Anatoly

I bought this lens complete with 5100. I have no problems with back / front focus on the entire range of focal lengths (and if someone has them, it might make sense to take the carcass with the lens to alignment). Today I rent about 7-8% of the total. Sometimes you cannot do without a wide angle, but I have not bought a better “shirik” (other priorities). But even if / when I buy it, I won’t get rid of this lens, because the pennies for which it can be sold in the secondary market do not play a role, and the light and small lens (which is also not a pity if something happens) will always come in handy .
It is unlikely that this lens makes sense to compare with fixes and more expensive zooms. The only real competitor as a whale lens is 18-105. Regarding this lens, you can list its main advantages and disadvantages.
    Advantages:
    - low price;
    - small weight and size;
    - cheaper light filters.
    Disadvantages:
    - less than the focal range;
    - the worst design (the lens looks extremely undignified);
    - flimsy hood.
Of course, all this is my IMHO. Someone else can highlight other advantages and disadvantages.

  • Oleg

Tell me which Nikon models besides the d3000, d5000 will fit this lens? Thanks in advance.

    • Ivan

To all Nikon “cropped” cameras with or without focusing motor!

  • Boris

I took this lens complete with a carcass.
Of the positive qualities, I can note the following - a record low price, compactness.
As Arkady rightly noted, 18-55 is not a pity to take on campaigns. I want to expand the definition of hiking - it's not a pity to take it on a hike, but it's better not to put it on the camera, because the image quality will be very mediocre.
If you are greedy in moderation, then it is advisable to consider “Tamron” 17-50 / 2,8 as such a “zoom”. It costs 3-4 times more expensive, but gives a more cheerful picture.

  • Daria

Please tell me, my lens jammed at a focal length of 18-24, generally it is calculated up to 55, it hasn’t fallen anywhere! What to do?

Hello Arkady! In the article you write that for this lens the EGF will be 27-82,5, why did you take this? maybe of course I'm wrong about something, but let's say there is a 50 mm focal length for Nikon 3100 (I have this camera) corresponds to a 50 mm focal length in the background frame with the corresponding lens. I took a look at the lens and I set the d3100 to 50 mm on the lens and aimed it at the carpet on the wall (it was just so convenient) I measured the viewing angle according to the drawings of the carpet, then I took the old zenith with a fifty dollars and aimed the same, the angle is identical, absolutely no difference , the viewing angle on the Nikon crop and the full zenith frame are the same. Maybe I misunderstood your article?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Do not confuse EGF and FR, details here https://radojuva.com.ua/2011/05/size-of-matrica/

          • Valera

So it turns out that the value of 18-55 (indicated for crop) indicated on the lens will actually be 27-82.5 in the glass initially? I have a tamron of 70-300, it is for a full frame, but because of the crop there the viewing angle is smaller compared to DX lenses

  • Kalina

Please do not laugh! Well, I'm not a photographer! There was an opportunity to buy a camera. Opted for D 90 Nikon. What can you tell: with a lens 18-55 or 18-105, the difference in price is 114 American rubles?

    • d50

Better 18-105. Even better is 16-85 (much sharper, + metal mount). Even better is 24-85 of any version (there is F / 2.8-4, it has a higher ceiling) (sharper, + metal mount, + good drawing, because the lens is for a full frame, for the same reason - less convenient EGF on D 90 Nikone 26-127,5 mm). This is the lens that suits me for prof. activity for 8 years. But I would refuse D 90 because of the distressing quality of autofocus (its quality is indirectly indicated by the number of points - there are 9 of them). In your situation, I would take D300s and would not be afraid to take used ones. Please take my word for it, maybe. on one of the copies of the D 90, I shot more than 1 million. frames (I can prove it). Here I passed by. Contact: http://vk.com/oalexey

      • d50

        Invalid typo: 24-85 - EGF on Nikon D 90 36-127,5 mm

  • Michael

Greetings. I took a Nikon-d1.5 x7000 crop with a DX AF-S Nikkor 15-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR kit. I can’t figure out what the real diameter of the open aperture is, for example, with a focal length of 18mm and aperture of 3.5. 18 / 3.5 = 5.14 (mm)? I understand that you don’t have to bother much with this, I would like to know for myself.

  • Anna

In your opinion, which lens is the best for the Nikon D3100? Of course it is clear that the more expensive the steeper it is, but I would like to get a good lens for the moderately well-fed price. Thank you in advance)

  • Sasha

I recently bought a Nikon D3100 with an 18-55 whale lens. I want to try night shooting and here I have a question, is a whale lens suitable for this, or is it better to buy a fast fix?

    • Lysyi71

      will fit

  • Victoria

Hello. I have a Nikon D5100, a Nikon DX AF-S lens NIKKOR 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G G. Tell me please, when I turn on macro photography and try to get as close as possible to an 18mm object, the camera does not focus and I get a blurry spot. cause? But it focuses the background, and the object in the foreground remains blurry.

    • Lysyi71

go to manual focus, to succeed ... good pictures.

  • anonym

    Good afternoon!

I want to buy a camera for my daughter. I don’t understand anything about it, I picked it up on the Internet
here it is- Nikon D5200 18-55 VR II KIT. Is it a good choice? The daughter is not a pro, she just got carried away and goes to courses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, a good option :)

      • anonym

        Thanks! I'll take it.

  • Sergei

Hello! Guys tell the unknowing. The whale lens on the D3000 (above mentioned) has an abnormal shat and sometimes when scrolling through Pts. it turns tight, used to think that it was connected with lowered temperatures and it supposedly let it go in the room, but now I am confronted with the fact that it turns tight and being warm. Sometimes she doesn’t want to focus, what can be?

  • Lysyi71

originally took along with the carcass. great glass.

    • Lysyi71

      ... for a landscape, that's it.

  • Vitaliy U

and here’s a macro from him

  • Maksim

soapy in the corners, is that normal?

    • Sergei

Try turning off the stabilizer, I have a double image in the upper left corner with the stub turned on. But I still use it when I feel sorry for expensive lenses (severe frost, dust, sand)

    • Sergei

I add that in comparison with the expensive full-frame Nikon AF-S 16-35 mm F / 4 G ED VR there is almost no difference in sharpness when shooting without a stabilizer, the corners on the crop are naturally sharp. Once again I was convinced that the whale is not so bad.

      • Lysyi71

“Once again I was convinced that the whale is not so bad.” I support.
