Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G review

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G review

Every lens maker boasts excellent portrait lenses, and Nikon can be proud of their nanocrystalline monstrosity - the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G. Nikon name N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1:1.4G (written on the lens) and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G (classic name) is the same thing. Letter 'N'- not only speaks of a special nanocrystalline lens coating, but also a kind of designation for very high quality, expensive, professional lenses, like Canon's' L' lenses. This is a true flawless professional lens, as evidenced by the 'professional' yellow border around the front lens, the professional 77mm front lens diameter, and most importantly, excellent image quality.

Modifications

In total, Nikon has 6 such lenses:

Each lens deserves its attention and each of them is a kind of legend. All lenses except Nikon 85mm F / 1.8 AF Nikkor and Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor, have different optical schemes, and therefore produce different image quality. It is very strange that all five lenses in optical circuits do not have special elements, such as ED-glass or aspherical elements. The only thing that stands out is the presence of Nano Crystal Coat (nanocrystalline coating or coating) in the Nikon N AF-S version of Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G in this review.

First impression

The Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G lens turned out to be just huge and quite heavy. With a hood, the lens looks just gorgeous. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried with you. The entire lens is made very high quality. The bayonet mount is metal.

Using

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G belongs to the new autofocus lenses, because it does not have an aperture control ring, aperture control is available only from the camera. The lens has a built-in focus motor Silent Wbird Motor, because the lens will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. The lens is suitable for both FX and DX cameras. On cropped cameras APS-C Nikon DX EGF will fit 127.5mm. Nevertheless, even on the Nikon N AF-S crop, the Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G remains an excellent portrait lens. In general, a focal length of 85mm is considered a classic for portrait photography.

Focusing

The lens has internal focusing (IF). The autofocus of the lens is average, slower than other Nikon 85s. The lens has a 'M / A' / 'M' focus mode switch. In 'M / A' mode, both manual and automatic focusing is available at the same time. You can correct the focus manually at any time, it is very convenient. In 'M' focus mode, the focus ring rotates only 45 degrees in active mode. I have no complaints about the autofocus operation when using the lens on the camera Nikon D3s. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G has a focus distance scale from 85cm to infinity. DOF is indicated for F / 16 only.

Example photo on a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G. Focus on infinity.

Diaphragm

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G lens has a huge aperture due to the use of f / 1.4 aperture. Nikon has only 7 autofocus lenses with similar aperture... F / 1.4 is 1.8/2 stops lighter than F / 3. The number of diaphragm blades is 9, and when closed, they give even circles in the out-of-focus area. The bokeh of the lens is excellent.

Image quality

At open apertures, when used on full-frame cameras, vignetting is noticeable, the corners are darkened by about one and a half stops. When the aperture is closed down to f / 2.8, vignetting is not noticeable. The lens creates a sharp image already at f / 1.4, especially in the center of the frame, when the aperture is closed, the sharpness increases. F / 1.4 aperture is fully 'working'. The lens holds back light well, gives good contrast and color rendition. Due to the 9-blade aperture, the bokeh of the lens is 'normal' at all F values. You can find fault with the fact that the discs of unsharpness are slightly cut off at the corners. In general, the image quality is excellent.

Personal experience

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G is sharp, perfect for portraits. The weak point is the focusing speed. It's a shame the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G is not waterproof. You shouldn't worry about excessive sharpness, since the depth of field of the lens is very small. I do not recommend this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G to amateurs, for them there is an excellent Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor.

  • Alexander

    OK. thanks, Vladimir!

  • Eugene

Good day! Arkady, thanks for the reviews, it’s very accessible and understandable and most importantly useful)! I choose a lens, I stopped at the AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G, but vague doubts torment me). I use the Nikon D5000 camera and the Nikon 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6G lens, until recently I had enough of them for family photos and trips, and now I got carried away with art photography and choose a fast lens for staged photos, with the possibility of then applying it to full-frame the camera. Arkady, do you think it's worth taking the AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G or do you need something else)? Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I believe that this lens will be very useful both in crop and in full frame. If money is not a pity, then it is difficult to find something better.

      • Eugene

        Many thanks)!

Arkady !, here despite the focal point, which one will be more productive and better! ??
        85 1,4 g or 105 f2 dc !!
I want to choose for portraits, rent for money and weddings!
Tell me who used them please!

    • Lynx

well, you can also save and take 85 / 1,8G, it is significantly cheaper and the difference between 1,4 and 1,8 is not so significant. Here are just reviews and comparisons of these lenses almost nonexistent, because of the rarity of this.

      • Eugene

Lynx, thanks! Of the reviews and reviews, of course 1,4 makes us look forward to something super beautiful), 1,8, as I understand it, is simply a worthy workhorse. I think then I will regret that I did not buy 1,4)

        • Lynx

no, well, if you have unnecessarily extra 35-60 thousand, then why not take it? ))) the lens is good.

  • Vadim

So you write that it is better for amateurs to take 1.8 or there that the difference is not noticeable, etc.
But there is no gold ring at the end of the lens! Yes, I would not consider 105mm 2.0D, it does not differ much from the 85mm in the picture, but 135mm 2.0D, here is the picture))

  • Maria

Hello! I have a dilemma: buy a good camera Nikon d 810 two good lenses? Now in the arsenal of Nikon d 90 paired with 50 1.8. Thank you!

    • Maria

Or two good lenses for example 85 1.4 and 24-70 2.8 thanks)

      • Pastor

Well, taking d810 and leaving one 50 1.8 for him is sad. Taking a picture on top ff glasses 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.4 on d90 is also sad. I would restrain my appetites if there is no way to take everything and buy d610, for example, 24-70 2.8 for it. You can then take another inexpensive, but not bad 85 1.8g. And the full frame would be a top reportage zoom and a beautiful portrait fix. But, this, of course, is in the event that you desperately do not need a bunch of megapixels on a large professional lamp, well, and 1.4 on an 85-ke.

      • Alexey DV

There is an old joke: A normal photographer buys glasses and takes a carcass for delivery ... I think this is the right approach

    • BB

It all depends on your tasks: what do you need at the moment - a full frame, or the above optics?

  • Robot1524

Perhaps it’s worth digging or, as Pastor wrote, buy the D610, and it will remain on the lenses.

  • Sergei

I use both d810 and 24-70 2.8 and 85 1.4. I note that 24-70 2.8 is rather weak for a 36mp matrix, it is better to wait for a new version with a stabilizer, according to rumors it will appear soon. Almost constantly I use 16-35 4.0 vr on vacation, as an addition to 105 2.0 dc.

    • Alexey DV

Guys, you yourself did not notice how you became slaves of marketing ... What the hell do you need to “allow” 36 megapixels, where is it useful to you in real life? 12 megapixels is enough with a margin for printing in maximum quality A4 photos ... A3 is also excellent ... Do you print posters? Don't think about that ... 24-70 has no drawing for inadequate money, that's what you have to grieve about ... Any intelligible photographer would prefer 28-70 ... Arkady himself shoots at 28-105, and he does the right thing ... Cheap and angry, there is a drawing ...

      • Sergei

I was also disappointed in 24-70, just 36MP is more noticeable in the optics. I don’t argue about marketing, but if having bought the 810, I understand why the money was given, then for the aforementioned lens - no.

        • Alexey DV

          Once again, Sergey ... No 24-70 lens ... The picture is available, in descending order of price: 28-70 \ 2,8D, 35-70 \ 2,8D, 28-105 \ 3,5-4,5D ...

        • Alexey DV

          I will advise you again, I don’t know if you will listen or not ... A wonderful set of excellent glass with a wonderful pattern: 20-35 \ 2,8D, 35-70 \ 2,8D, 80-200 \ 2,8D ...

      • Lynx

        And really!
let's offer an arcade to choose from “for nothing” 24-70 and 28-105 and see what he chooses. ))))

        • Alexey DV

There is money - offer it ... What to grind with your tongue?

          • Lynx

well, not I blurted out that “even Arkady himself shoots on”. )))

      • Peter Sh.

        Poiiiiiiiiiii

      • Peter Sh.

Sorry, the cat jumped on Claudia.
I will support Alexey. I print with 24MP FF matrix in A1 format, everything is sharp there, even if you look at it point-blank with a magnifying glass.

I would like to ask the owners of the D810, how often do they print on formats larger than A1?

An amateur does not make sense to buy expensive prof. lenses, I also somehow try to interpret the people.

Moreover, if you shoot, for example, on the Nikon 35-70 f / 2.8 and on the Nikon 24-70 f / 2.8, you will not see the difference. The same thing with telezoom.

  • Maria

Thank you very much for the comments) !!! I also tend to 610 and lenses) at the moment I certainly want both a full frame and optics))) as they say everything at once and can be delivered)))) wedding orders start to go and I want better photos (clear, sharp with more nice bokeh)

    • Star boring. Igor

The pastor telepathized you - his recipe 610 24 70 2,8 85 1,8 g is the most accurate and budgetary for work.

    • Lynx

think about d750. In wedding photography, a rotating screen and better focusing are also not the last thing.

  • Maria

Sergey discard a couple of pictures on 16-35 4.0 if not difficult)

  • Sergei

Unfortunately, Maria, still on vacation, there is no computer with a card reader, only a tablet.

  • Maria

all clear thanks! as there will be an opportunity ... ... I'm waiting)

  • Alexey

    just a comparison.
    a pair of Canon 85 / 1.2L and Nikkor 85 / 1.4G.
The Canon 85 / 1.2L has precision mechanics in a metal construct, the whole computer inside controls autofocus, a huge ultrasound motor from super-telephoto, an expensive huge polished aspherical lens, aperture 1.2 - costs $ 1900.
Nikkor 85 / 1.4G - plastic construct, no aspherics, stepper motor, aperture 1.4 (Nikon cannot make an AF lens with a better aperture 1.4) - $ 1600

  • Alexey

Arkady did not indicate in the review - Nikkor 85 / 1.4G has a FOCUS SHIFT problem. this is not a marriage but a design flaw in the lens design.
about this there is infa in the photozone, cameralaba, you can see here clearly
    http://diglloyd.com/blog/2012/20120619_1-NikonD800E-focus-shift-85f1_4G.html

strictly speaking, many Nikon lenses have this problem.
    incomplete list: 14-24G, 24 / 1.4G, 28 / 1.8G, 35 / 1.4G, 50 / 1.4G, 85 / 1.4G

  • VASYL

aha, for such money and with an inborn problem! I had one like this - I got rid of it, autofocus is slow (though accurate) - I took an analogue - sigma 1.4 - I am satisfied with the price, autofocus speed - and the picture wakes up better

  • Oleg

Arkady, correct “Nikon does not have 100 / 1.4”, because Nikon 105mm f / 1.4 has already been announced

  • Vladimir

Rented in Kiev. The d300s carcass, on the open one, is quite sharp, but on 3.2 it’s just space. Blurs the background a little weaker than Jupiter 36B, but the latter has a sad resolution, and trouble comes into sharpness. Guys, growth portrait blurs with a bang. On 1/100 and 1.4 there are greases (due to crop), but the picture is magical, every 2-3 sharp. By the way, 200 2.8 will wash out better. But a short shutter speed, normal sharpness, and a relatively dark aperture will not give such quality in the dark as 85. So I'm for fixes, fixes and only fixes. I plan to try it on film, or hire ff. Guys, I feel it will be space))) Even for that matter, I would not recommend taking 135 or 105 df. 85 by 1.4 erodes as 135 by 2. Here it is only 105 1.4.)) The price tag is space, so that used 85 1.4d appears.
On such a diaphragm, chiaroscuro is drawn elegantly.

    • Jury

Sigma 135 1,8 will be released soon, look at its price tag, compare with the price tag of 105 1,4 and this 85 1,4, look at reviews, read reviews, maybe someone Arkady will give one of the new portrait painters for review :)

Arkady, tell me, is it worth changing the Nikkor 85 / 1.4D lens to the Nikkor 85 / 1.4G? And how much will the difference in image quality be between them ?? Thank you in advance for your reply!

Why the hell to shoot an alarm clock with mikimaus in the forest on iso 2500 at a shutter speed of 1/4000 and at 1.4 aperture? Do you have an alarm clock moving at the speed of sound, or did you shoot it while flying shaving over the forest?

It is not entirely clear why Arkady, a columnist who understands so much, recommends this optics only to professional photographers. My choice turned out to be very simple - a good fix for leisurely amateur photography, and not to shoot it from the camera at all. I did not consider zooms at all, so they are just more needed by professionals. The new stack is certainly a good thing, but because of the focal one, you already feel some sluggishness. The fifty-kopeck piece always seems to me flat, any, and in my humble opinion some change in perspective is simply necessary for the overall expressiveness of the picture. Eighty-five was and remains a universal artistic option. Well, 1.8 ... how much has been written about its merits and modest cost ... Having worked with both, I realized what I probably should have understood. 1.8 is not suitable for a real hobby, and as for its price, it should cost a hundred dollars, no more. But 1.4 is worth all of its one and a half pieces, and any photographer knows this. 1.4 and 1.8 are often compared in favor of the inexpensive one, because too much of it was lying around in the warehouses of online stores. You need to understand a simple thing: 1.4 and 1.8 are optics of completely different classes, and there is practically nothing in common in their drawing. I am very pleased with my 1.4, although my camera is modest (610) I can recommend it to amateurs who do not want to sell a newly acquired lens every three months in search of a masterpiece, since it is this very masterpiece.

I think that Arkady's argumentation is extremely simple - few AMATEUR can buy such a lens. We are talking about amateurs on the territory of exUSSR, whereas in Europe, China or the States there is a different level of income, and there amateurs (in every sense) buy themselves top-end cameras and lenses without any problems.

Only you added China here in vain ... with its “high” standard of living for average citizens. I am a simple person, and it took me a year to raise funds for the lens, and taking into account the realities of our life, I consider this period to be quite normal. Over the past few years, I had to sell quite a few of all these "budget funds" until a simple understanding came that the miser pays twice. Well, in the secondary market, you can't take it either. When a one and a half thousand dollar lens is “killed”, it is shoved to the dodgers for a couple of hundred, and the dodgers put it out apiece. Then, for this money, it goes to a sucker, who himself has to become the same dexterous person, since no one succeeds in putting the lens in order. There is only one way - persistent accumulation and purchase of expensive things in the store. It’s the rich who can afford a cheap one that changes every month, and poverty requires getting serious.

I mentioned China for a reason - I SEEN many Chinese with top cameras both in Russia and in Europe. In addition, friends who often visit China told me what cameras were in use there.

        • Alexey

And I often buy a technician for myself and my friends, I carefully look at the condition and evaluate how I will repair it later.

Also paid attention to what the Chinese photographic equipment, especially those who have seen in Japan. They have, as always, the latest iPhones and new expensive equipment, most have full-frame news and 24-70 / 2.8.

          • Nicholas

There are a lot of Chinese (fantastically many) and it is not surprising that there are also many wealthy Chinese, so they travel around the world ... with expensive cameras. The average standard of living there is very low, lower than ours. To put an authoritarian, communist China, which has developed its economy exclusively in the interests of a very small elite, next to the developed countries of the West is completely foolish (sorry) And in general, to hell with China, all the more considering that they gave the world a pandemic, and more likely everything on purpose. As for the repair of modern, complex photographic equipment, this is a very shaky quagmire. We just have no one able to fix it properly. Even when sent for repair directly to the manufacturer, this manufacturer does not undertake this, offering a new one in exchange, with a large surcharge. It's easy to fix a fishing rod, and a modern lens, a camera ... repairmen often just drive off a show-off, restoring something like a temporary working capacity, and knocking out a lot of money from a sucker. Even third-party optics often fail to work well on cameras from other manufacturers, and these third-party manufacturers can do more than our fucking repairmen. It is better to take a new thing and take care of it, and when it starts to fuck brains, then ... she is sniffed by a sucker for a hefty price, although in fact her place is in the trash, since she is fucking brains. Poverty teaches a person to be a scoundrel, and a poor, simple Chinese amateur photographer is the same ...

By the way, it was written above about the shift focus, but it is not. Probably people more often write about it using used copies that the previous owners hit and dropped. Also, I could not find any back or front foci. It works very accurately and accurately. The focusing is really not hasty, but this is not too much needed, this is not a reporter's glass, but art. I even had an idea to take some similar Zeiss, but ... manual focusing is still not for me. You need to have a special talent to focus quickly with your hands. At least the automation, especially when it comes to open aperture, works much more accurately than my eyes. But his focus is very precise and tenacious, even on my 610 camera. I was surprised that he works in dense darkness, where I myself can't really see anything in the viewfinder. Previous lenses couldn't do that. Well, back is probably his feature in general, but there is nothing more interesting than shooting against the light.

I repair all my equipment myself, personally, with my own hands. no special problems. components, of course, sometimes you have to look, but it's real. documentation, equipment and service software for everything is available. how and what they do in the SC - I do not know, I was not interested.

Has anyone ever compared the D version and this lens, changed from one version to another? I saw it in the review - the person praised the colors on D very much. Does D have advantages if things like zuki are not taken into account when focusing?
Because of the color, I mainly wanted to change 1.8 (Chinese) to 1.4D. But now the seller D is out of stock (for obvious reasons, not available). We'll have to take a more modern version.
AF speed does not bother me, I shoot a lot on the J37.
    Thank you.

My favorite lens! He draws the picture himself and how cool!
Of the minuses, the purple XA in the back is very annoying, which manifests itself very strongly.
    I recommend ))
