Focusing

The lens has a fast auto focus. There is a lens focus mode switch 'M-A', the switch has its own interlock, which helps against accidental switching of the desired mode. Instant manual focus override is not available in 'A' mode. During autofocus, the focus ring is locked and doesn't spin... In manual focus mode 'M', the focus ring rotates approximately 90 degrees. Manual focusing is very convenient. The lens has focus distance scale и depth of field scale for F / 11 and F / 16, as well as a tag for working in the infrared spectrum.

The minimum focusing distance is 85 cm, and the maximum magnification ratio for macro photography is 1: 8.8. Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D uses technology CRC (Close Range Correction) - a focusing system with correction at close focusing distances (i.e. a floating focusing system). CRC allows you to get good image quality at any focusing distance.

Lens focus internalconstructed by the method Rear focusing system (RFS) - Rear focusing system. Usually, the abbreviation 'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'.

The lens uses 'professional' 77mm filters. Difficulties with different light filters should not arise. The lens comes with an excellent metal lens hood NH-31. The lens hood is simply amazing, its only drawback is that it is screwed into the front thread, or filter. When the lens hood is attached, the lens may close with a lens cap, as with the lens hood removed. The hood is not installed back-to-front (transport mode).

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D features to work with various Nikon cameras

1. Auto focus with Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm 1: 1.4D lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing. An exact and complete list of Nikon CZKs that support auto focus with 'AF' lenses (such as this one) can be found in the 'Auto focus on Nikon cameras'.

2. The lens has a manual aperture ring. To be able to control the value aperture from camera or for automatic installation aperture on modern central control valves, you need to turn the control ring to F / 16 and fix it with a special lever, which is located to the right of the marks aperture. If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, the display will display an error - 'fEE' (ring is not installed aperture) Some cameras having diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, the values F / 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16 are plotted on it. It is impossible to establish an intermediate value between pairs of numbers using the aperture ring. Intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu.

Aperture

Lens aperture mechanism Nikon 85mm f1.4D AF consists of 9 petals, the petals are rounded, which allows you to achieve even circles in the area of confusion. Due to the rounded aperture blades, achieve 'star effect'is possible only at very closed apertures, approximately at f / 11.

Image quality

The lens does not have HA in the field of sharpness already with F / 2.0, very few lenses boast such a property. There are lungs on f / 1.4 HA in the zone of sharpness. Do not confuse aberration in the zone of sharpness with friging.

Lens uses signature enlightenment Nikon SIC (Super Iintegrated Coating) and very naturally conveys color without adding cold or warm tones, including very good skin tone (skin tone). Particularly noteworthy is the bokeh - Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm 1: 1.4D boasts very nice 'creamy bokeh'. Also, Nikon AF 85 / 1.4D has good contrast, there is no distortion. The lens can catch glare in backlight, closing the aperture does not eliminate glare. The lens is sharp at all apertures, at f / 1.4 you can shoot without problems, sharpness degrades slightly from f / 1.4-f / 2.0 due to aberrations and from about f / 5.6-f / 16 due to diffraction.

Personal experience using Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D

It's funny that the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D has faster auto focus than Nikon 85mm 1: 1.4GN AF-S Nikkor. It is very strange that the new motor versions of the lenses focus more slowly than their non-motor predecessors. Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8G AF-S IF SWM Nikkor also focuses much slower than Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D.

F / 1.4D lens focusing speed compared to Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor, exactly the same. I conducted an experiment, put two cameras side by side, on the first F / 1.4D, on the second F / 1.8D, when you press the focus button, both lenses focus equally quickly from MDF to infinity and vice versa. Most likely, all three F / 1.8 AF, F / 1.8D, F / 1.4D lenses have the same focusing speed, which may slightly differ from the camera on which the lens is used.

In general, Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm 1: 1.4D lens I really liked it, even more than nanocrystalline F / 1.4g - both in drawing and in work. Treat this with understanding, 'like / dislike' is a purely subjective conclusion, that's why this section is called 'personal experience'. True, over time on the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D the rubber band on the focusing ring swells and slips off - but this is a trifle, in general the lens is very well made and has no other complaints about the mechanical part.

In general, I can say with confidence that this Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D has the best build of any other 85-current AF from Nikon. I met a similar super-assembly even at the legendary manual monster - Nikon Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4 AI-S.

It would be interesting to compare it with the manual and more affordable Samyang 85mm f / 1.4, if you, Arkady, have such an opportunity, test it please.

    • Arkady Shapoval

If possible, we will review it.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

As always, I read your review with pleasure, Arkady! Thanks!

  • Anatoly

Arkady thank you very much for the review.
For me, he came out just in time, otherwise I was glancing at a nanocrystalline monster, but I could not find concrete comparisons anywhere.
I believe that the diffraction of this lens on matrices with a larger pixel diameter will not appear with F / 5.6 but in a smaller hole. I would like you to test this glass on the D700 in terms of sharpness on small holes.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The diffraction in this lens is palpable. Unfortunately, my D700 is in service.

  • Dmitriy

I really look forward to the review of the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor. I want to make a gift for myself on NG. And of course, the purchase does not depend on the review, I will take it, but I would like to know the opinion of a professional.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I’m also interested to know what it really is.

    • Igor

I am going to take myself also 1.8G soon. According to reviews, this is a bomb! As they say everywhere “95% 1.4G, only 3 times cheaper”)

Arkady, I would be very glad to read your review before buying)

      • Arkady Shapoval

I would be glad if someone gives a review :)

  • Alexander

I support the request for testing 85 1.8! especially in comparison with its 1.4G!

  • Rodion

There is a BOWER 85mm fspherical IF if interested, I can provide for the test. I have been using it for 6 months, I shoot on the Nikon D90, I focus in Live View using a tripod.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Is that the one Samyang is? I will gladly accept the review. We can exchange for a couple of days, please write to me in the mail arkadiishapoval@gmail.com

What 85-tku would you recommend to choose for crop

Arkady hello! I would like to ask your advice. Twice you already advised me, both times you were satisfied.
I have a d90 carcass. Is it possible to take 85 1.4d from a hand in good condition for 40 thousand rubles, or is it better to take a new 35 85g for 1.8 thousand?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

        • Arkady Shapoval

1.4d is very nice, it's a professional lens, personally, I would definitely take 1.4d.

          • Alexander Belozerov

Thank you very much Arkady! For the third time, I want to thank you for your good advice! I decided to follow your advice and was right. I took a chance and decided to buy 85 1.4d (used) instead of 85 1.g new. I decided to buy it through used ebay. Bought from an American, traded through ebay on an auction basis. It cost 30 thousand rubles plus the cost of delivery, friends screwed them with a finger at their temples ...
But everything went smoothly and after 2,5 weeks, on December 30, before the New Year, I received it. Putting on the d90 carcass and making several frames, he was amazed at the quality of the pictures. Very like!!!
Thank you for your advice !!! By the way, they commented that he had slow autofocus, but I would say that his speed is not bad, maybe he was lucky with the copy.
The fact is that my wife and I went to study at the Photo School. We decided to take up photography with the prospect of doing it seriously and from the commercial side. We are already seeing serious steps forward. We are tired of office work, although it brings a good income. Now the question arises about buying a full-frame camera in pair with the d90. Having read your articles diligently, I tend to d700. I think we will not use poster-sized photographs in our work, that is, a multi-pixel matrix. How do you advise - a normal choice?
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on the upcoming New Year 2017!
And wish you good health, prosperity and creative success!
I would very much like you to recommend a full frame camera for commercial and creative photography ...
            Thank you again !!!

            • Arkady Shapoval

d700 is a good car, old, but good :) but I still recommend the newer d610

          • Alexander Belozerov

Once again, Arkady wanted to thank you for your advice on the nikkor 85 1.4d lens. Took used in excellent condition. Filmed in the studio to them on the D90. And he was struck by the quality and design of the photographs. Now I thought about the carcass of the FF. You advised me to purchase d610.
I am thinking of taking it with a whale kit, since I can’t buy it at the same time from 24-70 2.8 until I can ... and my station wagon from the Sigma 17-50 crop will not work.
I wanted to ask your advice again ...
Which is better for me to take d610 24-85 kit or d610 50 1.8d?
I take this opportunity to congratulate you on the past holidays!

  • Novel

Yes, this is subjective to the choice of 85ki, it's not about aperture ratio of 1.8 or 1.4, it's about drawing and sharpness, you can even relate to build quality. I want to take myself 85ku myself, I took 1.8d for one day, I still have to tighten the diaphragm, but what's the point of it if it's not sharp? 1.4 I would like to somehow hold it on my camera, because I want to buy it, I live in Krivoy Rog and we do not have normal stores that sell high-quality optics, namely, something worthwhile, but I don’t really want to take and order through the Internet from for the service and everything, I myself work as the director of a small store and knowing the law on the protection of the consumer, you can bend any store to the account of the service. Why did I say that? I bought a flash in the online store of the Nissin company and now you need to send them to Kiev for service and then everything is in their favor at the expense of the law. My friend has sigma 85 1.4 but it is under the canon, the photos are simply wonderful. As previously written, a very interesting review of Samyang 85 1.4 was written. I would also like to see the sigma. Thank you very much Arkady you have good reviews as always.

    Arkady, which lens is better
    Samyang 85mm f / 1.4, or Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm 1: 1.4D

    • Arkady Shapoval

Both are good, the latter with auto focus.

  • Eugene

What can I say, the lens is legendary, you can look for minor flaws, such as there is no way to tighten the focus manually on the machine, but it’s like to doubt that the Ferrari is a good car because there are few of them on the street, you can forgive everything for his picture, it’s very very really like it, and I change it only when with such a focus, well, nothing at all, and then I change it to Zeiss fifty dollars, which is also very good, but that's another topic.

  • Seryozha Ogorodnik

Does it have a diaphragm value of 1,4 and immediately 2,0?

    • Oleg

if you control the diaphragm from the camera (if you have a modern CZK), then the values are available: 1,6; 1,8 ..

  • Andrei

    is it the same?

      The same thing.

“The lens can catch glare in backlight, closing the aperture does not eliminate glare ..” - tell me, how much does it catch glare? Do you need a strong backlight, a completely direct sun or a flash?, Or enough light from a window falling at an angle to the lens? ... or through the foliage? .... in general, how critical, in your practice, is this glare?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Glare needs a fairly strong light source.

  • Palik

Arkady, is this lens suitable for the D90, and later for the D700? Thanks

filming on prof. and semi-prof. DSLRs are ashamed to ask such stupid questions, especially since the article is before my eyes ... horror !!

  • Valley

The lens is suitable for both FX and DX cameras, as I understand it, or I’m wrong, here some people react so sharply, beginners are afraid to ask questions simply (

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes, it does.

  • Alexander Malyaev

First I looked at the 1.4G review - I absolutely didn’t like the bokeh. Then I looked at the 1.4D review - the bokeh is great! And it costs less.

  • Alexander

Thank you very much, Arkady, for your reviews. Helped more than once, because they are alive and from the personal experience of the photographer. This is great!
Maybe someone used this 85-koy and 105mm-DC? What are your impressions? I am looking for a fix for portraits. I will be glad to help fellow enthusiasts. =)

  • Star boring. Igor

Very strange feeling from 85mm 1,4 - it is somewhat specific, those. serviceable, but at the same time the feeling that subjectively lacks either half-tones, or detail ... (and the focus on ff is already "close" for a portrait)
Is there anyone here who used it, but then refused it and what was it changed for?

    • Lynx

      Yes.
      I prefer 35 and 135 mm.

    • Pastor

All people are different. I like 85 for ff, but for someone it's 135 too short.

  • Vladimir

Arkady in the description of the lens says that in manual mode the focus ring rotates 90 degrees, did not hold this lens in its hands, but it’s a painfully small angle, it may have been incorrectly indicated, at this angle it is not very convenient to sharpen

    • Arkady Shapoval

Correctly. The lens is chubby, which is why there are no difficulties.

  • Alexander

I would like a little about the “artistry” of portrait lenses. The collection plate from the "photo zone" is very indicative in this regard. The top row is occupied by delightful “artistic” lenses, and the bottom row is very mediocre in this regard, “technically correct”. What's the Difference? Wild drop in resolution at the edges of the frame and eerie HA "artists". They still miss 40 Helios to join the company with an even more terrible effect. Samyang 85 f1.4 is in the middle position. Strange, but true; - technically imperfect lenses received the title of "creative". Yes, everything would be fine, but why then hang a horse price on them?

  • Julia

    I am confronted with a choice: 58G mm 1,4 or 85D mm 1,4?
The price difference is palpable, of course, and I have a 7000th Nikon camera. I still can’t decide.
Arkady, skadmte, can I make the 85th reportage? I understand that there is special optics for reporting, but I do not have money for all types of filming yet.
    Thank you for your reply!

    • Lynx

Who knows - you can or not.
      And you can

      • KalekseyG

Lynx, are you kidding again !? I would like to look at this matter with 85 on the crop)))))) with fifty dollars not everywhere will turn around, but here 85

        • Lynx

well, you joked, I laughed too.
IMHO, from experience, if you take a fix for a reportage - then an analogue of a half, i.e. 35 / 1,8g. or 24/2.
but it will be a reportage exclusively in the style of "film times".
For normal, you still need a zoom.

          • KalekseyG

But I didn’t ask about the 85th for reporting

          • KalekseyG

this is not what I asked

          • KalekseyG

            actually it wasn’t I asking

            • Lynx

              ah .. really ...
well, "she was joking, I laughed too."
however, when people say “I have money for a top-end portrait lens, tell me if I can shoot a reportage on it,” I want to cry.

              • KalekseyG

God gives one car and one hand

        • Julia

Those. 85th will be very narrow ???
What kind of zoom do you recommend?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If possible, it is better to take G. Which report?

      • Julia

        Arkady, filming in kindergartens, schools.
Thank you very much for your knowledge and experience with which you share here !!!!!

      • Julia

Arkady, you better take 58 G?

        • Vasya

nikkor 58g for reporting in kindergartens and schools? read better something from the basics of photography.

        • Alexander

There is no better Nikkor AFS 200-400 / 4 you will have time to remove everything - if you have enough endurance ...))))

  • Grigory Garanin

You know, here were Samyang’s thoughts, maybe Nikkor 85mm f / 1.8, I even bought both (idiot :)), but I just had to strangle the toad and buy a real legend, I really liked it, the DOF is wider than the Nikkor F / 1.8 with F / 1.4, the volume transfers amazingly, as if from a close Zaporozhets moved to a chic convertible. And the tones and halftones, no, guys, what Samyang, what Nikkor f / 1.8, everything fades in comparison with it!

    • Oleg

So here you are, insidious Nikonovsky marketer!
