Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)

Important:

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has an unusual maximum setting from F / 3.5 to F / 4.5. F / 5.6 is 1,55 times 'darker' than F / 4.5. The lens has a good 9-blade aperture, which makes it possible to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area.

About image quality

On a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp with F / 3.5-F / 4.5 in the center of the frame. In the corners, the sharpness drops, and in macro mode a strong vignette is visible. The lens conveys contrast very well, has excellent color reproduction, is not afraid of side and back light, especially when using the lens hood that comes with the kit. The 28mm lens has distortion, but the distortion level is surprisingly very small. The lens can still boast not the worst bokeh.

Here is the lens in combat conditions:

Personal experience

For a long time I was looking for a universal lens for a full-frame camera. It took me a lot of time. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor turned out to be very expensive, and Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon I was not satisfied with the flimsy body. It was decided to take only 'native' Nikkors. This AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D attracted aperture and f / 4.5 aperture at 105mm focal length. The capabilities of 105mm at F / 4.5 showed themselves very well in portrait shooting, and the wide angle at full frame is quite sharp already at F / 3.5. I got a lens for about 250 cu

For cropped cameras, the analogue of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is the lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-S DX. For crop it is better to use universal lenses of the type 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-70, 18-55, 18-300, 16-85, 17-55 due to a more convenient wide viewing angle than the 28-105.

Conclusions

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO) - excellent universal zoom for full-frame cameras... The lens is lightweight, gives a sharp picture and fast autofocus, has the ability to macro photography with a magnification of 1: 2, but requires a focus motor in the camera. By the way, Tamron also has a very interesting lens with the same focal length range - Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D.

  • Alexey

For such a price I do not see any flaws in it. I like his film picture. In general, I am happy with everything, maybe a successful copy came across of course, I bought on ebay for 130 bucks.

  • alex

The other day I came across such a lens and it has the inscription made in china on it. They were released in China?

    • Arkady Shapoval

28-105 in China did not let out, most likely you came across an outwardly similar 28-200 / 3.5-5.6, it was made including in China

      • alex

        Just such a 28-105 f3.5-4.5D. I can send a photo. Himself at a loss.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Send.

  • Firear

    Health to all!
Or I missed something / didn’t catch it, but wouldn’t it work on Nikon D 90? He shot on D 80 and, judging by the photo, it’s not at all bad.
I just found an offer of this lens for 10.000 and I think, take it, do not take it? Please tell me if anyone has experience using it with the D 90.

    • Pokemon

There is a screwdriver on the D90. 28-105 should work. Just focal not quite comfortable on the crop.
For 10 thousand rubles - it's expensive. You can find it for 8 thousand rubles.

      • nashua

In general, I did not like any FX lens on the crop. It is on the crop.

    • nashua

      What's the point?
There are more suitable glasses on the crop. And it’s cheaper and easier, and there is a sharper picture, and AF is faster, and even the stub is present

      • Oleg

Here you need to understand why to take optics for FX and put it on a cropped camera. On the crop, the edges of the frame with the lens for a full-format camera are cut off. As a rule, the edges sag in quality. It turns out a sharper picture. Not everyone needs and is interested in a wide angle (as for me it’s a real wide angle that allows you to get an artistic shot starts from 14 mm and for this ultra-wide angles are more suitable than ordinary lenses starting for crop from 18 mm.). In the end, if the angle on this lens is not enough, you can 1) move away from the object or 2) make a panorama of several frames.

      • Igor

Tell me, which of the glasses on the "crop" as you wrote "cheaper and sharper", and possibly lighter by 105mm, as in this lens?
Personally, I’m just interested in excellent sharpness and 4,5 at the long end.
That would be the point, for me anyway

  • Anton

Arkady good afternoon. Perhaps my question is a little off topic, but you can’t tell me whether it is realistic to remove small scratches and chips from the front lens of this lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Difficult, like with any other lens

    • nashua

Earlier at “Arsenal” it was possible to grind the glass (remove not deep scratches) and even then do the enlightenment again, but for 15 years there is no one to do this kind of work

  • Denis

Used this lens in conjunction with the D50, until he began to die shutter block.
Now I periodically apply with D610 for macro photos.
    Good versatile lens.

    • Robert

      And as for macro, good.

  • Oleg

I got it recently. A very good lens. Everyone liked it. Focusing is instant. The sharpness is very decent. The bokeh is pleasant, soft. The contrast is good. It is assembled well, of high quality, it is pleasant in the hand. Not heavy. Functionality - 4 in 1 - normal + portrait + telerange (partially) + pseudomacro. And only 1 special element! Yes, the price is budget. I recommend following Arkady! Yes, respect to Arkady for the review, in fact, which greatly influenced my choice.
    PS Used on d90.

  • Oleg

Thanks to Arkady for a great review. Thanks to him, he became the owner of this glass, which impressed

    • Pokemon

      Similarly.
The lens is beautiful. Well assembled and criminally cheap at a flea market, as well as 35-70 / 2.8D.
Both lenses feel good on D610 / D750 matrices and the same foreign photographers on a flickr willingly use them on these cameras, although they obviously allow them to buy 24-70 / 2.8G.

  • Novel

I bought this lens after reading your review and am very happy! I also like to shoot at 50mm f1.4, so sometimes in the editor I can not find the difference in sharpness and color reproduction, when it was shot at a focal length of 50mm, the picture is not inferior. Of course, when it comes to painting, there is no way without a 50, although the 105mm also erodes quite well, as they say in taste and color. But its macro and overall versatility, beyond competition, thank you for your work!

  • Alexey

Another thanks to the author for the review, which also influenced my choice. I ordered it through E-bay from Japan. Found it marked “brand new”, not really believing it, I issued the delivery. The lens came in a box, with all the accessories, and even a receipt from the store, which, for some reason, does not have a purchase date, in a “fly was not sitting” state - almost miracles. I haven’t tried the macro yet, but all the other modes are fully consistent with what is written in the review. Before, somewhere around 5.6 is a little soapy, but, in some variants of portrait photography, this even gives the frame a certain softness. Unambiguously - light-loving. I use it on D600 for about 1/2 of a year - "normal flight".

  • Alik

Not about the qualities of the lens. Ordered in Japan. Came in 23 days. You can’t imagine it is used, but it’s like new. Just sparkles! I have not tried it yet.
Ordered with the filing of Arkady. Thanks to him!

    • Pokemon

Also got so in good condition, which is very happy)

  • 1

My first Nikon lens, bought in 2003 with the Nikon F75 film :)
Then it went like a “whale” to the F80, but I couldn’t pull such a “whale”, I had to save on the camera.
There are plenty of great prints left from 28-105. When switching to digital in 2005, he sold: somehow it seemed that he was losing his magic on the digital, and f2.8 wanted a constant one. Although, in comparison with the budget AF-S counterparts (18-70 and its further development in the form of plastic trinkets with a flat gray picture), even on the figure, the photos from 28-105 turned out to be alive.

    • Alexey

I agree a very successful lens. Also bought it with the F80, until now the hand does not rise to sell it, although there are 24-70.

  • Koba

advice from kind and experienced users is needed! A friend had one, almost like a new one, and he stopped working the other day - it does not transmit the aperture value to the camera, although sometimes it does, but rarely, and the autofocus stopped working. Could you tell me the address of a normal master or a workshop in Moscow to repair it, if this is possible at all! Thanks in advance everyone !!!! The lens is really worthwhile, I also have one and I'm very happy.

    • Alexey

      Maybe still relevant ...
I had a similar one. I fixed it myself. Most likely frayed a train going to the contact group on the bayonet. Make it out, there’s nothing complicated.

      • Sergei

Alexey, hello. I bought a lens, but it turned out to be defective: according to exif, the lens does not become wider than 75mm (that is, on a physical 28mm, the value in the file is 75mm). Therefore, the camera does not open a hole wider than F4.5. Focusing and zooming is also tight. I would be glad if you share your experience or tell me who to contact!

        • B. R. P.

Contact the service. Lens electronics. You need to check carefully before buying.

  • Jury

Good afternoon, tell me, I choose between lenses (for d7000) 18-70, 18-105, 28-105 with a wide focus so far I don’t plan to shoot, which of the lenses is better in sharpness and picture? Thanks.

  • Nicholas

For a long time, I bought the lens indicated in the review for a penny - it was pretty much ushat, scratches on the front lens, jamming zoom in different positions, as if something was clinging inside, focusing to infinity at focal 70-105mm can sometimes disappear, I have to go there here to move the zoom and focus now close, now far to catch focus. maybe even there the loops are already frayed. But the main thing is that it is very sharp and contrasting, despite the pile of dust inside the lens unit, the image quality suits me completely.
And so I decided to find a replacement for it - I bought the same used lens via the Internet in a cosmetically excellent condition, almost like a new one with a box and documents - no scratches, no backlashes, smooth zoom, clean lenses inside with almost no dust, mold, fogging and other things (shone through with an LED flashlight from all sides). But as soon as I started comparing the very first photographs from the new and old lenses, I was very disappointed - at almost any aperture, from open to F8, a strong soft effect is observed, especially from light objects, tree foliage like in a haze. That is, autofocus hits accurately, and sharpness suffers due to blurry halos throughout the frame. Halos seem to frame objects. Tell me, who knows - is this a factory defect of the lens? or is it a consequence of a fall, displacement of the lenses, or some other action of the previous owner? Can this be fixed somehow? because you can use such a lens only on an almost closed hole. A similar situation was with my two Nikkor 35-70 2.8Ds - one was staggering, but sharp and contrasting with an open one, though with slight deviations in color rendition, the second was like new, again with clean lenses, but at F2.8-4 softil approximately the same as I described above.

    • Michael

It seems to me that some enterprising comrade collected one of 2-3 and sold it as a “new ideal”. And I assembled it incorrectly. When the lens is displaced from falling or something else, it usually lathers only one edge-corner. And here all over the frame

      • Nicholas

yes it does not look like assembled or after repairs…. all the bolts have no torn edges, even the pink lacquer on the bolts is not touched inside at the point of attachment of the rear lens, on the front lens the nut is also not visible to unscrew. Really like a new lens. I read about the type of aberration - it looks like a spherical one, like on monocles - that is, it is not completely corrected by an aspherical element, it may well be a factory defect ... it's a pity that it cannot be fixed

        • Michael

Yes, this is spherical aberration. Just from the installation of lenses (the distance between the lenses and the blocks) this thing also begins to appear, so I thought about disassembling it. Apparently, an unsuccessful instance ((

      • Sergei

        Front lens check

  • Nicholas

and this is how a ushanny lens shoots the same scene. sharpness and contrast are normal

    • Nicholas

this crop is 100% shot on the F4 40mm hyperfocal, when in theory the mdf should be almost to infinity.

      • Serge

Try screwing in the front lens block. Sometimes when removing the hood, it is accidentally unscrewed. Unscrew the locking screw only.

  • Alexander

Question to the author, Arkady, tell me what kind of viewing angle will be in% at a SHORT-LONG END on a crop, is D7000 specifically interested ???

  • Igor

Yesterday I arrived from a Japanese, with Ebey this strong man. He "tortured" him all day. I want to say Many thanks to Arkady for the recommendation! I chose that the serial number would start with 4 or 5, since the assembly did not read 2 and 3 somewhere. Took 49 ……… for $ 100
What can I say: The lens arrived as described without covers, but with a protective filter (the filter turned out to be the original Marumovsky filter with high-quality enlightenment). The lenses are clean (checked with a magnifying glass). Mechanically, too, in order, nothing is loose. The case is practically new and expected the worst condition. As for the picture quality: HA is noticeable at the maximum open aperture - slightly covered - clean. Sharpness is very good and even at 3.5 and 4.5, respectively, FR. Afiglitelno washes the background at 85-105mm. Close-up (macro) surprised at all - you can shoot at all "point-blank". And of course a wide angle for general plans, landscapes !!! Instant autofocus! It looks good on my D700! Why are there no modern station wagons with such capabilities ??? I think it will be ideal for travel! -Yes, for that kind of money! On Ebey they are - you can choose - I advise you to try.
    Arkady big respect !!!

  • Igor

    • Denis

      someone gnawed a battery!

      • Valery A.

Bullshit nibbled. In impotent rage. I also like the lens, though there is no way to compare it with modern zooms. And Tamron 28-75 / 2,8 is even more like it. I use on d600.

        • Igor

Tamron can also do nothing - but I can't say anything about him, since I had nothing to do with him. 2.8 is not too young, but my native Nikon and shooting point-blank outweighed, and here he is on my d700

      • Igor

The battery needed to be restored - I got into the frame :)

    • Pokemon

The 28-105 / 3.5-4.5D lens is really very successful and costs criminally cheap even in good condition.
Foreigners on flickr are still very eager to use it with the D600 / D610 / D750 and sometimes with the D800 / D810.
I also own this and also got almost new.

  • Igor

I got rid of my D7000 and left my 5MP D50 because the picture from it is really better, well, it is pleasant to the eye, I could not do anything and the focusing system, strangely enough, the D7000 was dumb for a terrible thing, and on all lenses, the smallest thing is an undershoot then the flight - tired!

  • Igor

crop D50 and FX D700 and I don’t need their multi-pixel miracle cameras for incredible loot for free

  • Alexander

And I have on the D750, if used for landscape photography, with sharpness not very at infinity. In the center, everything is fine, but at the edges even on f / 8 it’s somehow not very good. F / 11 is better, but it’s not always possible to make such a small hole. During portrait shooting, the lens shows itself well, and besides, such detailing is not required throughout the entire field of the frame with the latter.

    • Pokemon

D750 is quite demanding on sharpness.
If this lens does not suit you, take a look at Nikkor 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G.

  • Vadym

“But when zooming, the front lens rotates” - in = my opinion it does NOT rotate in practice

    • Arkady Shapoval

Even how it rotates (precisely when changing the focal length, and not when focusing)

  • dadyjo

I bought such a used lens. It turned out to be problematic in mechanics.
When zooming, something touched something for something, then at some point, it was impossible to make a zoom of less than 35. I decided to take it apart, I found the reason when zooming, the board was not in the center of the gap and the bulb rested on it. He bent down, and nothing was jammed normally.

    https://radikal.ru/lfp/c.radikal.ru/c20/2002/a0/1fd077fa56ef.jpg/htm

I put it on the camera and the problem got out again, the zoom at 32 rests and does not go lower.
Again, I take it apart and look what’s bothering this time.
It turned out that when the diaphragm opens, a plastic thing clings in which there is only one protrusion, but there should be two, and with the reverse stroke it remains to stick out and the lens block rests on it. I unscrewed it after that it became good to zoom in)

If that serial on 264 begins)

    https://b.radikal.ru/b26/2002/c7/17401742ca30.jpg

    • Pokemon

Apparently they got rid of the lens for this reason.
Some hand-legged "master" got in there and fucked it up, sold it to you, but you didn't check it when you bought it.

      • dadyjo

I am inclined to believe that this is a factory marriage. I did not see any signs of interference. The plastic part was clearly defective without a second cylinder and the board was not centered because of what was interfering, it only needed to be bent a little, they could also bend at the factory, the screws were not damaged, it wasn’t completely disassembled, as much as I could not completely disassemble make.

When I bought, I checked it. The focus is very accurate, the lenses are clean without dust, but when zooming in there were jerks and jerks, but I did not pay due attention to this.
In general, a lens for such a price (6-7 thousand) is decent, new analogs are much more expensive:
        37k - NIKKOR 24-85mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED VR
        52K - AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f / 2.8-4D IF
        55k - AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f / 4G ED VR

About aperture just do not have to say))
        99k - AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED

The only thing that I do not really like is a strong vignette.

Let me interrupt you (in a good way) about prices. As you took the 28-105 on the secondary, it is fair to take the prices for the lenses you specified from the same place. In my region (Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation) they are as follows: 24-85 / 2,8-4D - 10 tr, 24-85G VR - 15 tr, 24-120 / 4 - 25 tr. In an unkilled state.
