Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)

Important:

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has an unusual maximum setting from F / 3.5 to F / 4.5. F / 5.6 is 1,55 times 'darker' than F / 4.5. The lens has a good 9-blade aperture, which makes it possible to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area.

About image quality

On a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp with F / 3.5-F / 4.5 in the center of the frame. In the corners, the sharpness drops, and in macro mode a strong vignette is visible. The lens conveys contrast very well, has excellent color reproduction, is not afraid of side and back light, especially when using the lens hood that comes with the kit. The 28mm lens has distortion, but the distortion level is surprisingly very small. The lens can still boast not the worst bokeh.

Here is the lens in combat conditions:

Personal experience

For a long time I was looking for a universal lens for a full-frame camera. It took me a lot of time. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor turned out to be very expensive, and Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon I was not satisfied with the flimsy body. It was decided to take only 'native' Nikkors. This AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D attracted aperture and f / 4.5 aperture at 105mm focal length. The capabilities of 105mm at F / 4.5 showed themselves very well in portrait shooting, and the wide angle at full frame is quite sharp already at F / 3.5. I got a lens for about 250 cu

For cropped cameras, the analogue of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is the lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-S DX. For crop it is better to use universal lenses of the type 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-70, 18-55, 18-300, 16-85, 17-55 due to a more convenient wide viewing angle than the 28-105.

Conclusions

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO) - excellent universal zoom for full-frame cameras... The lens is lightweight, gives a sharp picture and fast autofocus, has the ability to macro photography with a magnification of 1: 2, but requires a focus motor in the camera. By the way, Tamron also has a very interesting lens with the same focal length range - Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D.

      • Anatoly

Arkady, please answer. I am writing again. On my copy in the center of the frame, the lens is super sharp, and it just smears to the edges. Life-size photos are not very beautiful. In any case, not as shown in your review. Camera d600. Have you encountered such a problem?

        • Lynx

          Not smears, but washes.
          Everything happens with old glasses

          • Anatoly

And for some reason, only on one side. It’s not very pleasant when even the background is sharp, and the legs are smeared. I am wondering if this can be fixed.

            • Jury

If the lens smears one of the sides, the optical axis or lens (group of lenses) is most likely displaced relative to the axis. It is possible to fix it or not - only the repairman will tell you. Doing repairs and finding a reason or selling and buying a new one - it's up to you. I would buy another lens if I don't like this one.

            • Lynx

IMHO - go to fixes. ))
or change the lens. repair 28-105, with the rearrangement will cost as another lens.

  • Alexey

I managed to buy such a cash on delivery at a cheap price, software on an open hole, that is your monocle. It is seen that climbed into the lens. What can be with him? There is no euchi in the gap, everything is clean.

    • Vladimir

Alexey, there was the same problem with another lens, 20mm afd 2,8 nikon
bring it to the Official Service Center, they will make an adjustment to the optical axis of the lens, you only have to carry it with the carcass, the engineer said, the work took 2 weeks due to the large number of orders in the service and cost 2200, for this lens in the same service will cost 1700 , I looked at the price list while waiting, when they bring the carcass and lens from the warehouse. The price in St. Petersburg as of December, carry the current to the official service, otherwise they will not.

      • Alexey

Vladimir, can you tell me the service contacts?

        • Vladimir

in St. Petersburg there are only 2 of them
Ace service on Chapaev 25 mine
          And foto one on Chkalovskaya
Handed over both there and there, in foto one a little cheaper,
Contacts are easy to find in Yandex or on the official website of Nikon in Russia, where both services are indicated

          • Alexey

They don't, they say the support ended in 2012….

            • Vladimir

it is strange, on the website the model is indicated as being serviceable, try handing it over to asap 25 service for mine, in the search engine write as service

  • Alexey

Thank you Arkady for your work. Thanks to your recommendation, I acquired this lens and am very pleased with it. Creative success!

Weight, I even read your instructions without your guru.

Guys who have glass 28-105 interested in the material case?

        • BB

“Ves, I have read the instructions without your guru” - what for then asked?

It would have been made entirely of metal - Arkady would have definitely indicated this. And then the weight would be 800 grams.

          • maksim

I take my words back sorry if rude.
For this I asked because I had never held it in my hands.

Just another selection criterion falls on the case material.
So confused before the iron 28-85 but MDF confuses.
28-105 captivates with more attractive characteristics, but it is embarrassing to have plastic. Maybe because I did not hold normal AF; AF-S?
Plastic Japanese Zuiko 18-180; 3.5-6.3; 2005 release. It suits the build quality.

            IMHO
18-55-105 and so on ... this is generally a divorce for money. The picture itself for such money is OBLIGED to quality. But I'm not rich enough to buy CHINESE plastic toys. I want JAPANAMA.

            • Valery A.

Take 28-105 if suitable and inexpensive (no more than 5-6tr). In my plastic park (including fast-moving) it is the most powerful monolithic.

Glass is clean, ideally. pleasant to the touch heavy.
I made a couple of frames on open, at 28mm and 105mm sharpness as I liked. Af could not even think that so tenacious.
Only, there is a slight backlash of the trunk slightly but unpleasantly. I didn’t feel it in my hands, but on the camera I’m already at home; Zoom zooms in slightly from 105mm to 28mm a bit further, like clockwork.
                the focus ring works perfectly
                AF like clockwork.
Now puzzled, slightly pull up the empty trunk)
Dismantled the nullaceous Tamron AF 70-300 a17 macro / sat for a day)
Now I want to lubricate and tighten 28-105)))
                Read 28-105 not for showdown)

              • Sergei

In the beginning, he doesn’t bite, it’s like they all have a 28 folded position, twisted the zoom a little, and this is already 35, the working one. Therefore, it translates from 28 to 35 with some, but not much, effort, and then freely

            • Andrey Super

Thailand is fundamentally different from China, do not confuse!

  • Jury

I highly recommend not messing with this lens. There is no stabilizer, focusing is not very accurate, poor resistance to back and side light, overall sharpness - so-so by modern standards. Hence a lot of marriage. Many people play with this glass for a couple of months, and then sell it (thanks to the low price and this review, this is easy to do).
A reasonable alternative at full frame is the 24-85 f / 3.5-4.5G or the Tamron 28-75 f / 2.8. Better yet, 24-120 f / 4, but this is a heavy and much more expensive lens.

    • Sergei

Can I have a couple of examples? Where does not keep the side and sharpness comparison? Inaccurate focus on which camera? “Focusing systems? - no, not heard.” It seems to me that these are just words. I would not compare with Tamron. 24-85, yes stabilizer. And the picture ?? Plain dry and plastic. A constructive ?? In general, 24-85 is not bad as a whale, but nothing more. It is not worth buying it separately from the word at all. Unlike the lens from the review.

      • Jury

Maybe I'm too categorical, but having shot a whole bunch of shots from him (including from a tripod), I got a lot of soap - shots that are blurry over the entire area of the frame. Perhaps it was just a bad copy.

        • anonym

if the whole field is not sharp, then this is not soap. This is a jamb focus. But whose (yours or glass) is an open question

          • Jury

May be. Probably, it was necessary to try through Live View in order to exclude the influence of front-, back-focus.

Hello everyone, tell me, and show me the best examples of this glass on 750 Nikon.

I got this lens from Vitaliy Polumyaniy, who is present here. http://olx.ua/obyavlenie/prodayu-nikon-af-nikkor-28-105mm-f-3-5-4-5d-af-macro-12-usa-ID90zOR.html
The seller writes: “I sell Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm. f / 3.5-4.5 D AF Macro, from standard to new. Link to photo on sale http://savepic.ru/9597403.jpg"Upon arrival, we receive just such a front lens with two chips of 3 mm and 1,5 mm http://savepic.ru/9577947.jpg The seller not only initially concealed the optics defect, he did not agree to reduce the price, or to accept the goods back, but “flogged it with a drill,” proving that he was right! I gave 4250 UAH for what was shown in the photo of the seller, and not with optical defects.
    From the correspondence:

And about this you write: “Stun until new”? I would not pay attention to small scratches. Even for a smaller chip.
And you probably consider yourself a decent person and a fiery patriot. It’s sad.
I was "thrown" for a lot of money, this is not the main thing. The main thing is to once again experience disappointment in a person, and you provided me with this opportunity.
I will be forced to give this event maximum publicity in order to warn potential buyers from the danger of contacts with a dishonorable seller.

    • Valery A.

But what is the quality of the lens itself, how does it shoot? Is the focus accurate, sharp, etc.? Can chips not affect the picture? They come from the store with hair bubbles, and this one is an old man.

    • Denis

He offers to take him back, I understand correctly?

      • Valery Solodovnik

The conversation is not about how he shoots, but about something completely different, if it is not clear. The same 28-105 is sold on OLX.UA for 2700 and the seller honestly writes that there are scratches. I will unsubscribe later on how to shoot. Now I can only say that in comparison with 50 / 1,8 it naturally loses, which is not surprising. AF is fast, it hits quite accurately. The back-front in old film lenses was adjusted at the factory, so if this happens, then this is already a marriage or outside interference. At 105mm chromite. I think Arkady described and showed everything very well with this lens. If anyone is interested in other tests, write to the mail. But! This does not mean that other instances will be the same. Personally, I took it to "interrupt" before buying a better model, and then sell this one.

        • Dmitriy

I watched this lens in Kiev, I confirm that there are scratches on the front lens, the lens was dropped (there is a trace of an impact on the thread under the filter), AF works very strange (it focuses very slowly and jerky from a minimum distance to infinity), noticeable software is open on all focal points .
in correspondence and in conversation, the seller claimed that the lens is perfect

  • Sergei

Thanks for the review, purchased this lens. Got a question. MDF for this lens is 105-22cm. scale 1: 2, for a macro lens (nikon 105 2.8 macro) - 31 cm, scale 1: 1. The advantage of macro lenses, they write, is the ability to focus at a close distance, and logically, with the same FR, the closer to the subject, the larger the scale. Actually, why does this lens have a smaller MDF (22 versus 31), the scale is 2 times smaller

    • Arkady Shapoval

Depends on optical design. During focusing, the angles of view change, they say that the focal length also changes. In lenses with internal focusing, the focal length decreases during focusing on the MDF. For lenses in which focusing occurs due to the movement of the entire lens unit, the focal length increases (during focusing on the MDF). As a result, the focusing distance for the same focal length changes from different “focal lengths to mdf”. In general, the focal point is indicated when the lens focuses at infinity.

      • Sergei

        Thanks for the quick response

      • Evgeny Aleksandrovich

Arkady, please tell me in comparison with the Nikon 24-120mm 1: 3.5-4.5D IF ED AF Zoom-Nikkor what are the pros and cons?

  • Dmitriy

    Arkady, good afternoon
But tell me, have you tried this lens with Fuji S5Pro? If suddenly yes, then briefly share your impressions.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I have not tried it.

      • Dmitriy

        : (( it's a pity
I know that you have this camera, for my just looking for something universal.
Can you give advice on what to choose from the universal zooms (there are fixes) that you tried with it and which you liked?

  • Dim

Question to the owners: Nikon cameras know this lens and do they rule the vignette automatically? Already bought and thought late

    • Dim

Doesn't rule. The vignette is clearly visible on the D700, especially if there is a sky in the frame. I took it to Ebei from Japan, as for me the state is better than the new plastic one ;-) I bought a Chinese hood - excellent pictures are obtained, a good lens, but a device with a flash is not easy to match 80-200 2.8 in sensations.

  • Oleg

Hello Arkady, photographers and amateurs, I want to clarify whether it is worth changing the kit 18-105 to this lens? And as I understand it from the review here at a zoom of 105 mm, you can put aperture of 4,5 instead of 5,6 on the whale? I use d90. Thank you for the excellent reviews.

    • KalekseyG

Not worth it, you won’t gain anything with a hole. Buy better Yu-37 or Yu-11.

      • Oleg

But then there will be no auto focus, as I understand it.

      • Vitaliy U

What "sharpness" are you talking about in digital photography? You can talk about "detail", "resolution", "micro contrast", but not sharpness. She remained in the film. Glass, by the way, film, on the figure will not fully open, whatever one may say. It fulfills its purpose 100%. Modern matrices allow (!) Lenses of the type 28-85 3,5-4,5VP, but they don't smell like a pattern, and in the old man 28-105 it (picture) is there.

I used to write on it here, I will add it. I had this lens for about a year, I bought it as the first one and a frame for a crop, which was not the best solution. Because there is not enough SHU. But this understanding came later. In general, I was pleased with the functionality and picture quality. But over time, it became not in demand - it was replaced by fixes and 18-55 with a button. On FF I think it is more interesting. And on the crop, it somehow turns out to be indistinct - there is no wide angle, as a portrait portrait is very mediocre. Neither this nor that in general. Macro is nothing to start with, but nothing more. It lacks sharpness, but the picture has a kind of warm film-lamp charm, unlike modern dark zooms, where everything is too sleek. The back one holds better than the Soviet ones, but in general it is not very good. But it gives a nice flare) There is not enough stub, but not critical. The design is much better, more reliable than 18-105, 24-85vr. As a staff for a crop I would not recommend. On ff it is great if you are ready to give up the stub and like the picture from old glasses. I attach a photo with a glare, not a very high-quality 800 by 600 tk, the limitation is 1MB, but it weighs in this form almost 900kb

      Macro

The picture is not sharp. I have this glass, it “draws” in the same way.

A good lens, durable, lightweight, compact, with a good picture. Like macro on it (flowers - mushrooms). I recommend a camera with a “screwdriver”, better for a full frame, especially for travel. The lack of VR on these focal lengths does not bother me. Of course, 35-70 / 2,8 or 80-200 / 2,8 is better, but the price for 28-105 in the secondary market pleases, I even think that it is underestimated for the price. If you decide to take it, it is better to take it in excellent standing for 8-9 thousand rubles, than strongly used one. for 7. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of a focusing motor, so I do not recommend it for younger models.

It’s just interesting to try such a miracle for the d80. But I think the following about the state. If the model of previous releases is in a new state, it means it was not in demand, it was on the shelf, maybe a jamb with a picture.

Took on Ibei, ideal condition. But it strongly lathers the edges in the open, the zone of sharpness is not in the center, but shifted far to the lower right quarter. I gave it to the bulkhead with cleaning, indicating to pay attention to possible displacement of the lenses. There were no displacements during disassembly, but after assembly everything became perfect.

      • Alexey

Not necessary. The lens is still an amateur segment, and even to a film camera. An amateur and not even shoot a lot on film. And if a professional used a lot, and still merges, there is a chance that it merges due to further unsuitability.

Glad for Radozhiva, how great is the authority. Even in advertisements for sale I meet copy-posts from reviews of Arcadia. As for the price inflation, I did not track it, but the practically new 28-105, which hung in our city on Avito for 9 thousand, more than a year, was gone.

    • Pokekmon

On Avito in Moscow time, I saw in the ads numbers from 15 to 18 thousand for him in December last year.
But there were also 9-11 ...
Where 15-18, they referred to tests on the network and to Radozhiva :-)

They need to be forced to pay me interest.

      • Alexey

Well, you can ask how much conscience will allow, but the real price is from 8 to 10 thousand, and for 10 they are not sold for a very long time. But Arcadia is not often referred to as simply shamelessly reposting excerpts from his reviews in ads.
