Important:

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has an unusual maximum setting from F / 3.5 to F / 4.5. F / 5.6 is 1,55 times 'darker' than F / 4.5. The lens has a good 9-blade aperture, which makes it possible to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area.

About image quality

On a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp with F / 3.5-F / 4.5 in the center of the frame. In the corners, the sharpness drops, and in macro mode a strong vignette is visible. The lens conveys contrast very well, has excellent color reproduction, is not afraid of side and back light, especially when using the lens hood that comes with the kit. The 28mm lens has distortion, but the distortion level is surprisingly very small. The lens can still boast not the worst bokeh.

Here is the lens in combat conditions:

Personal experience

For a long time I was looking for a universal lens for a full-frame camera. It took me a lot of time. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor turned out to be very expensive, and Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon I was not satisfied with the flimsy body. It was decided to take only 'native' Nikkors. This AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D attracted aperture and f / 4.5 aperture at 105mm focal length. The capabilities of 105mm at F / 4.5 showed themselves very well in portrait shooting, and the wide angle at full frame is quite sharp already at F / 3.5. I got a lens for about 250 cu

For cropped cameras, the analogue of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is the lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-S DX. For crop it is better to use universal lenses of the type 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-70, 18-55, 18-300, 16-85, 17-55 due to a more convenient wide viewing angle than the 28-105.

Conclusions

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO) - excellent universal zoom for full-frame cameras... The lens is lightweight, gives a sharp picture and fast autofocus, has the ability to macro photography with a magnification of 1: 2, but requires a focus motor in the camera. By the way, Tamron also has a very interesting lens with the same focal length range - Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D.

  • Vitaly

Three pieces of such a lens passed through me. Two of them were openly washed in the open, but the third one (by the way, the first of all came to me) is very, very much. Therefore, all sorts of negative reviews about this lens may relate to just such unsuccessful specimens. The same person who came across a successful instance will be very pleased with this glass. Very versatile at full frame, in demand during travel. Many thanks to Arkady for the article about this lens, it was after reading this article that I found a universal zoom for myself, although I tried a lot of different things. Very like.

  • Alexey

Hello, tell me on the quality of the photo, is this lens better than Nikon 18-105 for crop (wide angle is not important)?

  • Andrei

Alexei, one cannot say better or worse, he is just different. Here is an example of the color 105mm f / 4.5 D700
    http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/9505/44239578.8/0_974b1_aa7b0a79_orig
I like 28-105 precisely the “airy” picture inherent in almost all glasses designed under the film. The picture from 18-105 seems to me less expressive and less plastic. In general, all old glasses differ in their picture from modern ones, there is something in them…. alive or something). Yes, in certain conditions it is easy to catch HA, there is no stabilizer. But there is also a plus - a metal mount.
Took 28-105 on eBay for $ 167, including delivery from Japan, very satisfied.

  • Nikita

This lens went with the nikon f80 camera in general for only 2p, I took it for the sake of the lens, but now I don’t know whether to sell the camera or leave it. I wonder how long the release of film will continue

  • Ivan

Arkady, does it make sense to install this lens on a cropped Canon 600D, instead of using the Canon EF 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 or 28-105 1: 3.5-4.5 if autofocus is unimportant?
    Sincerely.

  • Ivan

I am answering my own question. Manual focusing is rather inconvenient with this lens, since the full stroke of the focusing ring is about a quarter of a full turn. And if without macro focusing, then even less. So it is impossible to focus manually by 3-4 meters. But the glass is really interesting, but for a carcass with a screwdriver ...

  • Lyudmila

Good evening, I really like to shoot macro, so I decided to purchase such a lens. Tell me on the Nikon D90 18-105 it will work or advise something else thanks in advance for every advice.

  • Lyudmila

Thank you very much for the answer, I’m learning everything about it and I’ll decide something, but if you think you can get a good one or better not to risk it

  • varezhkin

interested in this lens ... there is a 28-80 G film lens, and I also really like it from the picture.

  • Olegmarine

    Hello Arkady!
And yet, what do you prefer - this glass, or Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO)?
    Thank you!

  • Olegmarine

Sorry for the typo, I mean Nikon AF Nikkor 28-200mm 1: 3.5-5.6D (IF)
    Thank you!

    • Arkady Shapoval

      28-105

  • anonym

28-105 I have a long time, even with the film Nikon. Many times I asked about new lenses, even with a pretense of professional ones, with a constant hole, but during testing they all lost 28-105 in sharpness. Surprisingly, such an old lens keeps the mark!

  • Эндрю

I'm also looking for a universal lens for a full frame (610) ... What can you tell me to take Lens Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5D IF AF Zoom-Nikkor or Nikon 28-85mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Arkady, give advice as a professional in wedding photography whether this glass is suitable for the initial station wagon reporting wedding photography on the D7000 or better sprinkled 18-70. Already have a 50 / 1,4 and an excellent 135 manual, SB-800 (I do not take 105 whales into account). Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Better 18-70, 28 is not enough angle.

      • Alexey

18-70 is analogous only in focal, but not in color rendering, volume and picture ... 18-70 is already plastic ...

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Thanks for the advice. But as I understand it, it is simply critical for 18-70 to add something a la 70-210 for the street and staging?

    • Arkady Shapoval

it is better to take a fix for a crop, like a good fifty fifty or a good 85ct.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Thanks again, for the advice and your useful work, we will try.

  • Leonid Samoilov

Note! In LiveView mode, the picture goes only with half-pressed descent.
This is probably due to the set aperture 22. That is, there is a picture, but no matter how ((:
    Camera Nikon D750.

    • DmitryKb

I have such a picture on the 750th and with this lens without a half-pressed shutter! The aperture is naturally set to 22.

  • Boris

Arkady, tell me, what equipment do you have today?

  • Sergei

Hello, Arkady. Please tell me how much this Nikon 28-105 lens will be appropriate on the Nikon d600 with its 24-megapixel sensor. Will the full potential of the camera be revealed? thanks

    • Arkady Shapoval

The potential of the camera is 90% revealed by the photographer. The lens will work just fine. Perhaps each pixel will not glow with sharpness, but it will do.

      • Alexey

        + 100500 ... The concern about pixel-by-pixel sharpness is ridiculous ...

        • anonym

Funny concern for other people's issues.

  • Sergei

I am tormented by the choice - this one or 24-85 vr. What do you think?
At a price they are 2 times different on Ebay (vr more expensive). Interested in picture quality, reliability, ease of use.
Application - as a staff, when you don't want to, there is no way to wind up fixes. By the way, we have them for some reason at the same price (Ukraine) - Ebay rules))

    • Peter Sh.

It has much better sharpness, less distortion.
With VR, you can do wonders in poor light or even without light.

I personally prefer this one, I have two, in case the first one ends. On d610 gives just beyond the sharpness in daylight. VR sold.

    • Peter Sh.

Here you need to clarify, this one has better sharpness on covered diaphragms, around the edges.

  • Sergei

Thank you in advance for your reply)

  • Sergei

I got a subject on Ibei at my own peril and risk. Compared to 24-85 vr, the edges are sharper, overall a more lively picture. Macro is quite on par with 105 micro not comparable, but acceptable. Great staffer. Yes, no vr, but 24-85 loses the rest.
I discovered a strange defect, which I did not immediately pay attention to. On the front lens, it looks like a very small speck of dust when closely examined. Since when wiping it did not go away, looked into a monocle, thought that it was a small chip. It turned out to be a bubble ball, looks like glycerin on a hydrophobic surface)) I examined it with a magnification of 15 times somewhere. And it is covered with enlightenment))) Clear image does not affect the image, but I have never seen such a thing)))

  • Sergei

Thanks to Peter S. for the recommendation!

  • Alexander Malyaev

A good lens, I use in conjunction with the D600. I bought it recently and by accident, in a new state at a ridiculous price by modern standards. Previously, zooms were somewhat dismissive, but now it seems that in most cases it is enough, especially on walks when there is no desire and ability to carry around with different optics. The lens captivates with its versatility and good sharpness, low weight.

  • Star boring. Igor

Good, but I took it fucked up - I would like to compare with Nikon AF Nikkor 28-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MK I)? and also interesting nikkor 24-50mm 1: 3.3-4.5,
as if to look at the sharpness and color?
