Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-135mm 1: 3.5-4.5 (MKI)

Important:

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has an unusual maximum setting from F / 3.5 to F / 4.5. F / 5.6 is 1,55 times 'darker' than F / 4.5. The lens has a good 9-blade aperture, which makes it possible to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area.

About image quality

On a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp with F / 3.5-F / 4.5 in the center of the frame. In the corners, the sharpness drops, and in macro mode a strong vignette is visible. The lens conveys contrast very well, has excellent color reproduction, is not afraid of side and back light, especially when using the lens hood that comes with the kit. The 28mm lens has distortion, but the distortion level is surprisingly very small. The lens can still boast not the worst bokeh.

Here is the lens in combat conditions:

Personal experience

For a long time I was looking for a universal lens for a full-frame camera. It took me a lot of time. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor turned out to be very expensive, and Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon I was not satisfied with the flimsy body. It was decided to take only 'native' Nikkors. This AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D attracted aperture and f / 4.5 aperture at 105mm focal length. The capabilities of 105mm at F / 4.5 showed themselves very well in portrait shooting, and the wide angle at full frame is quite sharp already at F / 3.5. I got a lens for about 250 cu

For cropped cameras, the analogue of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is the lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-S DX. For crop it is better to use universal lenses of the type 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-70, 18-55, 18-300, 16-85, 17-55 due to a more convenient wide viewing angle than the 28-105.

Conclusions

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO) - excellent universal zoom for full-frame cameras... The lens is lightweight, gives a sharp picture and fast autofocus, has the ability to macro photography with a magnification of 1: 2, but requires a focus motor in the camera. By the way, Tamron also has a very interesting lens with the same focal length range - Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D.

Many thanks to your model — she helps you in a really important and necessary matter (and is good)!

  • v

    Thank you for the review.
The model is really beautiful, not “cute-sexy” like most of the others, namely Beautiful.

  • Nicholas

tell me a good interesting article, but what can I take for DX cameras of about the same plan I have 18-105 whales, that one came with the camera

  • Ivan

Arkady: The lens was released in 1998. Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D has a metal mount and is very well assembled, no backlash. The lens in the hand feels like a very high-quality thing

Yes, in these years, they really made high-quality lenses. I had a long time Nikon 28-80mm f / 3.3-5.6, walked with a whale to the Nikon F70, later I used it on the D70. Despite the fact that it was a whale, he at that time was very happy with it. Today's whales are not at all the same, both in assembly and in optics.

  • gene

Arkady, please advise, does it make sense to take it as a regular on d90y for 1400gr?

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is a point, on my D80 it is pretty good. There will be time, I will lay out examples.

Arkady ,, thank you very much for the review and advice, the lens took-almost new, after the first tests, very pleased!

Thank you very much for the article.
I was looking for a universal lens for a film camera and for the D80. Thanks to your review, finally made a choice :-)
    P.S. Great examples of photos.

I got this miracle in about two thousand, together with the F70 carcass and the SB27 I took the flash. Before that, I had a lot of experience, I took pictures at school, my uncle ZORKY gave an old one with a retractable fifty dollars, then my father bought a FED-5v, after the army, KIEV-4a with an expanometer, and when a fast photo of kodak came with film soap dishes, all this equipment began to gather dust in And now I have a Nikon F70 in my hands together with a 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5D AF Zoom-Nikkor made in japan ... Fortunately, there was no limit, the pictures were a fairy tale, the sharpness was ringing, in my hands it was like a UFO caught! And no wonder, the photo is mostly 10 * 15 and 13 * 18, sometimes 15 * 20, the resolution with a margin is “above the roof”! The figure came…, it is clear that the quality did not reach the film level, but the convenience outweighed, and the quality grew. I bought an Olympus SP 550 superzoom, then Canon SX10 is not a replacement for DSLRs, but focal ones are dead! I sold the first one, my daughter uses the second. I wanted something more serious, again, with the expectation that the old would not disappear (28-105 I mean ). I surfed the Internet for a long time and decided, all the same, D700. I took it with a mileage of 7300 for 53 rubles, attached my dear 28-105, and what? ... But it's quite normal for myself !!! Sharpness is in place, 105 washes nice, geometry is decent, in general, the buzzer is quite balanced by all indices, and if you take into account its current market value, Duc is generally super! And the other day I went to "FOTOplus" and tried on Tamron AF SP 24-70mm f / 2.8 DI VC USD Nikon F for 39 rubles and Sigma AF 24-70mm f / 2.8 IF EX DG ASPHERICAL HSM Nikon F for 27 rubles and something made me sad -the picture quality is noticeably better, but that's a completely different story! Did you write a lot? I apologize if I'm tired! :)

  • Vitaliy Polum'yaniy

Amendment to the scope of the 28-105: macro for a 22mm. Instead of 22cm. !!!;)

    Crazy for respect! :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Nothing like this. Do you even imagine what the focus on 22 millimeters is?

      • Vitaliy Polum'yaniy

Reveal! I recognize my eyes and vi, - I photograph him with a macro in close proximity 22mm !!!

        Seme, through such a minimal focus, see a lot from the Nikkor 28-105 devices, miss the frontal lens, oskilki є finish a lot of dilettantes, I want to know the macro that, I want to know the macro, but I don't want to play it);

Shanovny! Wee, mabut, nikoli did not take pictures of the "miracle of the astonishing technology"!;) Try it! And later you will insert your “five copies” !!!

What can you say about the TOKINA AF 28-80 mm f / 2.8 AT-X Pro compared to the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105 mm f / 3.5-4.5 D IF and Nikon AF Nikkor 35-70 mm f / 2.8 D, a question with the choice of glass, I tend to Tokin, camera fuji s3 pro.

Arkady, good afternoon, please tell me. I bought this glass, but for some reason, starting from 70mm, the lens does not focus on infinity, it goes here and there, I tried to focus on it manually from 70-105, but the sharpness ring is not enough, that is, from 70-105 there is no sharpness at infinity (for example, on objects on distance from 60m and further). Or am I just a teapot and this lens due to the fact that it is MACRO not intended to focus at such distances. CYSTERIES I tried in the mode and NORMAL and MACRO the same story. Thanks in advance for your reply.
My IMHO: You are great, thanks to you I learned a lot of useful things, I really like to read your reviews, right now I’ll go to like))

  • Andrei

Arkady, on this lens with a focal length of 28 mm, as I understand it, can not achieve a blurred background (bokeh effect)? Another question at weddings is which focal length do you use most often? Ultramind (70-300) are less in demand than station wagons up to 135?

    • Arkady Shapoval

70-300 is not an ultrasound, but a telezoom. The most commonly used range is 24-200. At 28mm blur is difficult to achieve.

  • Maksim

Good afternoon, Arkady needs your advice. I have a kit 18-55 and 50 1,8. The whale does not suit the sharpness, and especially the color rendition, I shoot very rarely at a wide angle, we can say that I almost never shoot. I am looking for an inexpensive replacement for a whale. Thinking to buy Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-D worth it? if I understood that 18-105 only differs from the whale in zoom, and the picture is the same….

  • Maksim

Or is it better Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8? important is not as fast as picture quality. And another question, Tamron AF 17-50mm f / 2.8 with a stub and without differ in something else or not?

  • Vladimir

I recently got a Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-D, I'm very satisfied. The picture quality is excellent, the color rendition is natural, better than the kit 18-55, the D90 camera. The build quality is much better than the 18-105, and it feels like a nice solid lens at the same price as the 18-105. Focusing is instant. Bought for 6000 in excellent condition, a little expensive. The lens is a little soft, well as anyone, for a portrait - excellent. There is no ringing sharpness, and the contrast can be increased in the camera if desired. The Macro mode is great, which the 18-105 lacks. If you don’t find fault with the lens, then a good crop kit for that kind of money. Let's just say that the lens has a “soul of its own”, if you get used to it and drive it at different focuses for different purposes, you can get excellent shots. Also don't forget that this is real Japan. I recommend, Maxim. By the way, kit 18-55 is a good lens for its money, but, unfortunately, you have to choose several copies separately from the camera. I chose from 4. Two were complete "sucks", maybe you got one.

    • Oleg

Vladimir, do not worry! I took mine for 6500 rubles today! And I have no regrets. Condition new, no specks of dust, no scratches. Draws super. Thanks to Arkady for the advice!

      • Vladimir

Yes, I don’t worry, Oleg, this is me, for orientation in price))). I am very pleased with the lens, which I also wish you. Good luck to you.

  • Novel

Hello Arkady and citizens-photographers! And I had such a problem ... I bought this lens and installed it on the D90 ... And for some reason the carcass does not show an aperture wider than 4,5 on the screen, regardless of the focal length ... Ie. and at 28mm it is chosen from 4,5 to 29, and at 105mm from 4,5 to 29 ... Having made a frame and looking at the information about the frame on the carcass, it is prescribed that the focal distance is always (no matter what is wound on the lens) = 75mm, well, aperture = from 4,5 to 29 (depending on which one I chose ...) Although the frames come out excellent at any focus. distance and at any aperture! The only problem is in the incorrect transmission of information ... Tell me, please, what is the consequence? Is the problem with the carcass or the lens? What difficulties can this cause? For example, using a flash? ... I look forward to hearing! Thanks a lot in advance!

      Good day to Romane!

Your problem is in the object itself, - at the curved directional “rod” of the zoom. Also, you can use a contact list to transfer contacts.

Arkady, if there is such an opportunity (and time), could you please make a review on the Nikon 28-70mm f / 3.5-4.5D AF Zoom-Nikkor. On some sites they write about the macro mode on this device, but I just can't figure it out: WHERE IS HE !!! The lens is decent (the picture looks like a 70-210 f4), but there is 0 information on the net ... Thank you in advance!

    • Glory

      I have a Nikon 28-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 lens
There, on the focus ring after 0.5, a yellow line and the letter M are drawn.
This means that for macro photography this lens does not need to switch to “macro” mode, and it allows you to focus at very close distances.
So don’t look for a switch, just keep turning the focus ring beyond 0,5m

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Slava, thank you very much for your answer (I thought I couldn't wait for a response). I ask you to answer a couple more questions about this lens: there is a suspicion that there are no (70mm) focal lenses there. D70 camera. Compared pictures with 7000-70 f210. How does yours behave in the backlight? Do you use any camera adjustments when shooting with this lens? And in general: how do you like it? I've been using it for a couple of months now, the opinion is contradictory ...

        • Glory

About 70mm, I now have nothing to compare. More recently, I presented my Nikkor 70-210 to a friend in another state. This Nikkor 28-70 f / 3.5-4.5 lens was created for Nikon's compact film films that appeared in the late 80s. Because of what, in the early 90s, this compact zoom appeared and cost $ 500 (adjusted for inflation). In winter, I won it on eBay in the United States for $ 30 along with a film camera. According to Western laboratory research, optics of rather high quality on it ( http://www.photozone.de/nikon–nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/240-nikkor-af-28-70mm-f35-45d-review–test-report ).
On my Nikon D800 it looks undignified, so I don't show it to my models (give them a huge pipe, otherwise you will not be perceived as a photographer). And for myself, sometimes I play with this glass - it gives pictures, as if filmed on film. For some reason, on fixes, I can't achieve such an effect as on this old zoom. The image itself, of course, is not as sharp as on the Nikkor 50mm f1.8G, but also not as contrasting. Compared two lenses Nikkor 28-70 f / 3.5-4.5 and 50mm f1.8G in landscape photography in sunlight, at 100% framing is almost indistinguishable.
I can't say anything about the backlight - I haven't tried it yet. I do not make any special settings for this lens on the camera.

          • Vitaly U.

Thanks again, Slava, for the informative answer. I agree 100% about the picture (by the way: the picture from this glass and the Nikkor 70-210 f4 are very similar, in my opinion).

  • bravebeaver

I bought myself the same on the D90. Great quality, very happy. Of course, a wide angle is sometimes not enough, but the quality is worth it. 18-105 after buying this lens I never screwed up. I shot the last 7 travel reports on this lens: http://bravebeaver.livejournal.com/ (2012-2013 year)

Arkady, hello. Please tell me which lens is suitable for the 28-105 lens? I was advised by the D70 only to have it discontinued (then how to choose a used one, so as not to go bad) and what to look for when buying a second-hand And what should it have a shutter mileage from it? thanks

Any Nikon having a screwdriver. Otherwise, autofocus will not work!

I bought myself a Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-D in Minsk for 160 USD, a Nikon D300 camera. I didn’t expect a good result from the lens for that kind of money… But how wrong I was! The lens is GREAT !!! Build quality, picture, color rendering, focusing, sharpness, macro - excellent! A very good cropping staff for the money. RECOMMEND!

  • Nikolai 20.11.2013/22/02 at XNUMX:XNUMX

I bought a Nikon D3100 camera and I can’t get a good juicy picture. Help me choose a lens with good results as Alexander Gvozd bought for 160 cu, maybe such a Nikon 28-105mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-D lens will suit me, I am new to this business and don’t understand much. I looked at your pictures very much . Maybe I should change the camera. If this lens is suitable for me and my camera will take such pictures as yours, then I am ready to buy it. I ask you to help me.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For D3100 is not suitable. Look towards Tamron 17-50 VC, Nikon 16-85 VR

  • Nicholas

Thank you so much, you reassured me. The Tamron 17-50 VC photo lens you proposed, the Nikon 16-85 VR are very expensive for me, 5-6 million are the cost of my camera and it is not known whether they are good or bad. Maybe there is a cheaper and better option.
