Important:

The lens has an aperture control ring. So that he starts working normally on modern Nikon cameras, you need to set the value F / 22, using the aperture control ring on the lens itself, and fix it with a special lever, which is located near the F / 3.5 mark. After such manipulation, it will be possible to control the aperture directly from the camera, for more details in the section about Non-G Lenses.

Diaphragm

The lens aperture has an unusual maximum setting from F / 3.5 to F / 4.5. F / 5.6 is 1,55 times 'darker' than F / 4.5. The lens has a good 9-blade aperture, which makes it possible to form fairly smooth discs in the out-of-focus area.

About image quality

On a full-frame camera, the lens is sharp with F / 3.5-F / 4.5 in the center of the frame. In the corners, the sharpness drops, and in macro mode a strong vignette is visible. The lens conveys contrast very well, has excellent color reproduction, is not afraid of side and back light, especially when using the lens hood that comes with the kit. The 28mm lens has distortion, but the distortion level is surprisingly very small. The lens can still boast not the worst bokeh.

Here is the lens in combat conditions:

Personal experience

For a long time I was looking for a universal lens for a full-frame camera. It took me a lot of time. Nikon 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED AF-S N Nikkor turned out to be very expensive, and Tamron AF 28-75mm f / 2.8 SP XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) for Nikon I was not satisfied with the flimsy body. It was decided to take only 'native' Nikkors. This AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D attracted aperture and f / 4.5 aperture at 105mm focal length. The capabilities of 105mm at F / 4.5 showed themselves very well in portrait shooting, and the wide angle at full frame is quite sharp already at F / 3.5. I got a lens for about 250 cu

For cropped cameras, the analogue of Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D is the lens Nikon 18-70mm f / 3.5-4.5 AF-S DX. For crop it is better to use universal lenses of the type 18-105, 18-135, 18-140, 18-200, 18-70, 18-55, 18-300, 16-85, 17-55 due to a more convenient wide viewing angle than the 28-105.

Conclusions

Nikon AF NIKKOR 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D (IF MACRO) - excellent universal zoom for full-frame cameras... The lens is lightweight, gives a sharp picture and fast autofocus, has the ability to macro photography with a magnification of 1: 2, but requires a focus motor in the camera. By the way, Tamron also has a very interesting lens with the same focal length range - Tamron SP AF Aspherical LD [IF] 28-105 mm 1: 2.8 276D.

  • dadyjo

And does the US before the serial mean that it is released for the American market?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Yes

  • Alexander

Please tell me, is the lens suitable for Nikon D-90?
    Thank you.

    • Pokemon

Suitable for any camera with a screwdriver.
      For D90 including.
But on crop, i.e. the D90 will no longer be universal due to focal.

  • Sergei

Arkady, tell me which lens will be better optically, Nikon 28-105 3.5-4.5 or Nikon 24-120 f4 vr?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Second

  • Maksim

Please tell me how good it is for macro? If compared with 60mm 2.8 D

    • Arkady Shapoval

Optically worse, macro only 1: 2, darker, strongest vignette in the corners
But it’s more convenient (with a zoom from 50 to 105 you can more conveniently control the increase), 105 mm is another perspective picture, sometimes more interesting. And cheaper.

  • Andrei

Arkady, please tell me which lens will be optically more interesting than Nikon AF Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 2.8-4 D IF Aspherical Macro (1: 2) or Nikon AF Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D. Thank.

  • Alina Razumova

I have d750. I bought such a lens. The diaphragm behaves strangely. Installed f22, set the limiter at 3.5. All the same, the aperture “jumps” - it changes itself from 4 to 4.5 when focusing, while the aperture ring does not move. the minimum 28 is set at 4.2 mm.
3.5 can be caught by accident if you move the focal length ring and stop it sharply by 28 mm.
This is normal? I would be grateful for any answer.
Before that I used only fixes, I can stupid.

    • Alexey

This is a zoom lens with a variable minimum aperture, which is reflected in its name. 28mm minimum aperture lighter (3.5), 105mm darker (4.5). zoom lenses with a constant aperture are more expensive.

    • Arkady Shapoval

At 28mm should be 3.5. And it should vary from 3.5 to 4.5 with an increase in focal length from 28 to 105 mm. If the 28mm is not 3.5, then there is a small problem with the cables. Take off at 28mm and see what focal length the camera shows in the picture.

      • Ivan

        Hello.
I also refuse to set the aperture lower than 4.5. On your advice, I looked at the focal length, and so here it is, which is 105mm, which is 28mm, shows 75mm in the image properties. Question - what's the little problem with the loops? The lens was recently under repair, the cable was changed, since autofocus did not work. Gathered carelessly? Or?
        Thank you!

        • Sergei

Mine is exactly the same! By exif lens 75-105 F4.5. If you managed to solve the problem, respond.

  • Yaroslav

Good day to Arkady. Vibirav mіzh dvoma ob'єktivami 28-105 3.5-4.5 d і 24-85 3.5-4.5g vr. I picked the first option yak think I am right? Richly hto glad to take new ones.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      New is better

  • Allenz

Hello 28-105 versus 35-105 (Trumpon MkIII) which one is sharper? Contrast, focal interests from 40 to 105 mm

    • Pokemon

      28-105 / 3.5-4.5 sharper, more contrast.
35-105 / 3.5-4.5 is good only for a constructive trombone (you can instantly change the focal point, this is good with tough reporting ... for example, at unauthorized rallies (I'm serious)).
35-105 is very compact, not much larger than 35 / 2d. Optically 28-105 is better and Arkady wrote about it. The cost of these lenses at the flea market is also different.

      • Pokemon

        I had 35-105 / 3.5-4.5, then I sold it and bought 28-105 / 3.5-4.5.
Each of them fulfills its price by 200%. Both are unpretentious.

  • Alexey

Good evening! How does it behave on s5pro? Nobody tried it?

    • Sergei

Regarding Fuj, the glass is certainly not as sharp as Tamron 35_150, but the picture is pleasant, and its brother 28_70 3.5 4.5 behaves the same way, but it is slightly better in terms of sharpness. Take it you will not regret it.

      • Sergei

        * slightly

  • Alina + Razumova

I took myself such a used one for Nikon 750, tk. a wide-angle zoom was urgently needed, but there was no money. A nightmare, of course. The vignette bleeds from the eyes. Well he is fast, yes. Lubricates the edges like hell. I really want to change it. It is very difficult to perceive it otherwise as a temporary stop. I shoot weddings, children's parties.

    • Sergei

Check the front lens, sometimes it is not screwed on or turned away, I also did it, then you don't want to change it.

  • Oleg

    Good evening!
I wanted to ask. For some reason, on this lens, at a focal length of 35 mm, when I rotate the zoom, resistance is felt in the form of difficulty in movement, like a small obstacle and a weak click, at other distances this is not. What is it fraught with? Other functions are intact. Thanks.

    • Vladimir

I have the same picture - a slight resistance and a slight click between 35 and 50, when rotating the zoom ring. And then it clicks, then no.
The Japanese from whom I bought this glass honestly warned me about this before buying. I ventured to buy, especially since the seller set the price ridiculous, taking into account this defect.
I have been using it for the third year already, it clicks periodically, but nothing else bad happens.
Therefore, I stopped taking a steam bath.
As for the quality, the glass is not bad, but I noticed that it worked sharper on the D700 than on the D3s. It would be necessary to adjust it in the SC, but I think that it is unprofitable, and most likely I will replace it with a new 24-70.

    • Bob

It's okay, I had the same. There inside there is a plate that bends and rests with its edge, you just need to bend it a little. Disassemble the lens there is nothing complicated.

  • Savely

Hello Arkady, I've been reading you for a long time, and now it's finally time to choose a universal lens for myself. I take it to D750, shoot everything on the street, landscapes, portraits, street animals, etc. The choice is between Nikkor 28-105mm 1: 3.5-4.5D and Tamron SP 28-75mm 1: 2.8, which seemed flimsy to you, but at the same time you recommended it. Please tell me: are there significant differences between them, and is F2.8 really needed?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron is 3.5-4.5 better than Nikon 28-105. Of these two, I recommend Tamron

      • Savely

Thanks, didn't notice your comment at first.

    • Savely

Tamron is the most expensive for 1000 rubles.

    • Vladimir

This Tamron (if in motorized version) will not focus in Live View. If you are interested in shooting with a flip-up screen, then look for something else.

      • Savely

Good evening, I have not heard of this. Are you talking about a motor built into the lens? I kind of take the "screwdriver".

        • Vladimir

Yes, there are two versions of them. I have a built-in focusing motor. If a screwdriver (with a diaphragm ring), then probably OK.

          • Savely

Thank. The screwdriver seems to focus in all modes, well, it's not critical if that.

  • Alexander Nizhny Novgorod

I also have such a lens and a Nikon D750. The lens gives, in principle, a very contrasting, I would say, a beautiful picture. But if you look closely at the sharpness, the edges of the frame really seem to be blurry even at f8. I think that the reason is the high resolution of the D750 in relation to the D700, which Arkady used for tests. In general, as they wrote here, the lens fulfills its price by all 200%, but I think if you need pictures with high details on a multi-pixel camera, it is better to purchase something from newer glasses. But for the rest of the other scenes, where high detail is not required, I think that the lens is good.

    • Alexey

It is great on crop, and covers the old 10-12 megapixels by 200%.

  • Leon

Hello Arkady. I am looking for an inexpensive lens for macro (insects), should I stop here or take a manual Nikon Micro Nikkor Auto 55 mm f / 2.8.? Thanks to.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Better old fix

  • Dmitriy

Like a mediocre photographer. The model is terrible.

    • Sergei

Do your review, let's look at your pictures

  • Alexander

Hello. Tell me what other lens hood is suitable for it besides the standard Hb-18.

  • Andrei

how will this lens feel with the D800E? Is it worth buying?

    • Dmitry Kostin

Honestly, it is unlikely that he will allow it - this is still a lens of film times.
IMHO, it is worth taking a closer look at the first time to a more recent one:
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm 1: 3.5-4.5G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical
He went with a whale to the D610 and he was with a stub.

      • Andrei

I had one, did not like the sharpness of it.

        • Alexey

It depends on the specimen, it probably was dropped or not dropped, there were 2 pieces, sharp and sharp.

          • Victor

And when I looked at these, I tried about five of them, all of them had problems in sharpness. Probably age + not very careful handling (although outwardly ideal)

  • Gilberto

Uso a lentes na nikond7100, tenho dificuldade em fotografar no modo normal, as vezes não entra luz ea foto sai completamente escura.

    Some help?

    • B. R. P.

      Ayuda con el servicio.

  • Vadim

Arkady, thank you very much for the review. This is the fifth lens I’ve bought after reading your articles. I did a test recently on a Nikon D700. I really like the picture, it really makes a very nice bokeh.
