Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI review

For the opportunity review of the legendary Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI Many thanks to Nikolai.

Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 review

Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 AI review

There are several versions of Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor, the first lenses Non AI Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor appeared back in 1959. Versions available - Nikon 105mm f / 2.5 P, K and PC types. In 1977, the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor lens saw the light AI version, then Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor was implemented AI-S. Different versions vary in different enlightenment, the presence of a lens hood and the transmission ring of the diaphragm.

Focal length: 105mm
Diaphragm: F / 2.5-f / 22
Optical design: 5 elements in 4 groups
Number of aperture blades: 7 pieces
The weight: approximately 430g

Front Filter Diameter: 52mm

Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI is a short fixed telephoto lens that acts as an excellent porter, however, on Nikon DX cameras EGF lens will be 157,5mm. On cropped cameras, the lens gives a narrow field of view, but working with it is very pleasant.

The lens comes with a lens hood HS-8but I got a lens without a lens hood. The focus ring rotates exactly 180 degrees. The focus ring is rubberized. When focusing, the trunk of the lens lengthens by about 1 cm, while the front lens does not rotate, but the focus ring also moves slightly forward.

The DOF for the lens is indicated by multi-colored stripes that correspond to the color indicated by the numbers F on the aperture ring. The diaphragm petals are matte, do not reflect light.

Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI can be used without any problems on any Nikon central control valve. You can read about some limitations and subtleties when working with old manual Nikon optics in the section AI-S. By the way, recently a new camera Nikon D5200, because, Nikon cameras genealogy updated.

Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI is a true professional lens of the old days. The lens is small, but you can feel a piece of metal and glass in your hands. Due to the good build, these lenses still retain the mechanical parts very well. Optically, the lens also remains flawless. Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI is still in high demand in the aftermarket.

Image quality

Excellent sharpness over the entire field of the frame at any aperture, though at F / 22 diffraction makes itself felt. No vignetting on DX cameras, no distortion, good color rendering. Contrast falls in back and side light. In the backlight, the lens can catch very strong glare, the lens hood eliminates glare, I slightly covered the lens with my hand to remove this strong 'rainbow'. The bokeh of the lens is amazing, with smooth tone transitions and other charms.

All photos taken on camera. Nikon D80, photo without processing, size reduced to 2MP and data from EXIF. The designation F / 2.5-8.0 means that I did not record the exact aperture value at the time of shooting, and it fluctuates between F / 2.5 and F / 8. Basically, everything was filmed on an open aperture.

Personal experience

Personally, I liked the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI much more than Nikon 100mm F / 2.8 Series E... The 'E' version plays out strongly by 105 \ 2.5 in the drawing, and 1.25 times in the aperture. It's a pity that now there is no similar autofocus lens, there are only expensive special purpose lenses - Nikon AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f / 2D, Nikon 105mm f / 2.8 AF Micro and Nikon AF-S 105mm f / 2.8 VR Micro. A good alternative to Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI is the Nikkor 105mm f / 1.8 AI. I have seen reviews that the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI gives a soft, not sharp picture, but my copy did show excellent sharpness across the entire frame.

  • Elena

what a good question it was, but it was completely passed by ...
in comparison with 85 1.8 which lens is more interesting in the resulting picture? legend 105 or 85? or comparable?
    thanks for the answer.

    • Igor

85 on ebay is twice as expensive. There is also a photo on the 85mm lens, to be honest, I liked the photos of the old 85s a little more.

  • Paul

I have both 85 and 105 now. They are different, it is difficult to decide. One person on the forum sold his 105 after acquiring an 85. Another sold 85 and left 105, motivating it with a more convenient focus for him. Subjectively, 105 has a stronger blur and smoother creamy bokeh. The lens is sharp from open apertures. The 85 has its own interesting bokeh and a large aperture, in a good portrait on the open. It becomes sharper as the aperture is closed. The image from it, in my opinion, is more “3D” in volume compared to the 105. It also seems to me that the 85 with a closed aperture is a little stronger in detail in the distant shots. I have 105 Ai with multi-enlightenment (green), and 85 "H" with enlightenment is simpler. But both are fine with the hood. I write everything from memory, subjectively. In general, they are both must have)

    Auto RU:
Big request, explain to me. I figured out the aperture scale and depth-of-field scale (indicated by colored stripes corresponding to the color of each aperture value on the ring). There is a black dot on the white (aluminum) ring against which the diaphragm is mounted. But there is also a red dot on the DOF scale between green and pink lines. What does it mean ??? Hence the confusion - is the focusing distance value set by the black point or by the red? If not, then what is the red dot for?
I have 5 Nikon lenses, I would like to know them from and to.
    I will be grateful!

    • Arkady Shapoval

The red dot is the IR focus shift mark when shooting in the infrared spectrum. In the rest of the ordinary cases, use the center marks.

      • D5100 + nikon 50 / 1.4 mf

Thank you, so I haven’t missed anything.

  • Igor

There is an opportunity to buy one. How to use it for macro?

  • asp

I will add from myself. Nikkor-P Auto 2.5 105 is an excellent lens. If you find it in good condition, take it without hesitation. Better for this money you will not find a day with fire. Zonnar optical design, very sharp with open, excellent contrast and glare resistance. And the drawing is very worthy.

    • Pate

I fully support! A delightful picture from him. But there are also very difficult moments. Firstly, it has a tele effect - in a portrait from the waist down, flat isometry is most pronounced if you choose the wrong angle. Naturally, much less than at zooms. 2nd - hard purple frigging in the open - the photo doesn't spoil much, but it is almost impossible to focus on medium and long distances, especially in the backlight. Only luck or focusing with a manually clamped aperture)))

    • cybernetics

      > Optical design Zonnar
It was the Nikkor Ps that were produced with both the Zonnar and Gauss circuits.
They are easily distinguished by the size of the rear lens - small for the Zonnars.

  • Spit

Good afternoon, please tell me how this lens will be sharper in comparison with the P version and in comparison with the Nikkor 100mm 2,8 e series.

  • Yu Rock

Tell a newbie, bought Nikkor-P Auto 2.5 105, converted to ai, installed without problems on the d7000. But the lens sends incorrect aperture values, the camera writes from 0 to 6.A on the scale on the lens 2.5 and 22, respectively
Is it normal or curve conversion?

    • Vitaliy U

Most likely, they sawed crookedly ... I (not very straight-handed) sawed Nikkor 135 3.5 Non-Ai (at d7000) - everything is fine. You look at Google, there a lad sawed some half a dozen with photo examples and a table ... everything is simple.

    • Lynx

Adjust lens data in the camera menu.

    • Aleks

in the menu, find the lens without a chip and indicate its focus and aperture, assign it a number and the correct aperture display will be

    • Aleks

in the menu, indicate - an objective without a microprocessor, assign a number to it, indicate in the same place F.R and min aperture and it will show the true value.

  • Alex

Interestingly, in your objective opinion, which of them is better in terms of the “picture”: Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI review, or Helios 40-2?

    • Rustam

Why do you need to compare them? 105 distortion-free lens with soft bokeh. The sharpness is very good. A 85 1.5 lens is very specific. In most cases, the model should be in the center of the frame due to: a) low sharpness along the edge of the frame b) specific background (it should also rotate around something according to the idea) + the lens also has a high aperture that at shutter speed 1 \ 50s ISO1600 will make it possible to shoot even at night.
Lenses are very different if you understand their meaning.

  • Askar

Good afternoon. I recently bought such a lens on an eBay. When installed on the camera, I set the aperture value to the maximum value f = 32, but when Nikon D90 was turned on, the aperture field displayed - “f–“. This is normal?

    • Jury

The camera does not see a non-chip lens, semi-automatic modes are not available, you can shoot in mode M. You can put Dandelion Lushnikova

      • Askar

Yes, according to the table on Serial numbers, I have a K version lens, although I bought it on ibey with a description of A.I. Thank you for the advice about dandelion.

  • Vlad

Arkady tell me, what is the difference between the versions of P, K and PC? Where is the version written on the lens? Which is better?

    • cybernetics

The version is indicated on the title ring at the front.
The PC version differs from the P in improved enlightenment.

  • Vladimir

Today I received a version C in excellent condition. First impressions - the construct is beyond praise - metal, glass, mechanics as in the sight of a sniper rifle. Compared to Kaleinar, it is very sharp, although I probably have such a subdued Kaleinar, the sharpness by 2,5 is even scary, I shot it in nef, I'll sign it off. By permission - though film - everything is fine at 7100. It cost about $ 200. An interesting feature is the travel of the focusing ring up to 2 m tighter than further to infinity. I don't think it's a marriage, the lens is in perfect condition. I am very pleased with the purchase, I have long wanted to buy it - it was spurred on by the reduction in the supply of worthy copies. If you come across in good condition - take it without hesitation.

  • Valery

Arkady, advise the possibilities or your opinion of this lens with the Olympus OMD E-M5 Mark II
Interested in both portraiture and macro, most notably as a telephoto. I would really appreciate advice!

  • Leonid

In conjunction with the I23U 100 4,5 an interesting macro lens.

  • anonym

And the big difference is between the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI and the Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI-S.

    • Vitaliy U

Yes, I forgot to add: I compared 105ku and 80-200 D (2) (by 105mm), the sharpness on an open 80-200 is better, but the drawing-105ka is much more interesting. But AF sometimes (in the report) is more important than the picture.

    • cybernetics

Better enlightenment, different mechanical design, built-in hood for AIS.

  • Vitaliy U

There is no difference in the picture. There is a difference between the Ai (Ai-S) and Non-Ai versions (Ai-S is sharper when open, more suitable for a male portrait), but it is such that not many people can notice it, even photographers (I am silent about models). I shoot the Ai-S version myself. I like. I thought of taking Samyang 85 1,4, in theory, you need to sell 105k ... but the hand does not rise. Nice, reliable lens.

  • Sergei

Excellent, I recommend. I really like the portrait photos from him. I also shot with a macro foot and Kaleinar, this one is much better than both of them. After him, one cannot look at the Kalainar-Jupiters without regret. And the makrik is still makrik, the portraits from him are specific, it's not even a matter of sharpness - the high micro-contrast strongly emphasizes the details, which I don't like. Children can still be filmed, but who are older .. They can hit with a frying pan. And this handsome man. Yes, there is no autofocus, but it is not really needed, I adapted to the Soviet ones, I get it almost always and quickly. Probably dc is better, but the price .. I am generally satisfied as a washed elephant

  • Koba

Well, let's add that it was with this lens that Steve McCurry shot his famous portrait of an Afghan girl - Sharbat Gul ...

    • Foreign land

Well done!!! And it was from him that Monroe was filmed in color engravings). Do you know what I mean?

  • Sergei

    Yes, 7 years ago I bought this legendary lens from him at a low price (file: /// F: /Nikon%20105%20f2,5%20Ai/Nikon%20105mm%202.5%20Ai%20E%20Series%20Legendary%20Prime% 20Lens% 20L @@ k% 20-% 20eBay% 20 (item% 20280564700819% 20end% 20time% 20Sep-20-10% 2012% 2003% 2010% 20PDT) .htm), installed "dandelion" and now it is my favorite portrait lens, although there are still 35-70 2,8 and 70-210 4

    • Foreign land

Well 35-70 is controversial of course, but 70-210 is very good. One of the best manuals, if not the best, on the 7080200210. A shot and a perfect balance of focal opt qualities and aperture.

  • Sergei

Tell me, if you compare it with yongnuo 85 1,8 on the d7200 for home use, then what would you prefer?

    • Arkady Shapoval

yongnuo 85 1,8 on Nikon does not exist, there is only YN 100mm f / 2.0 it and would prefer

  • Vladimir Lvov

Hello everyone! Help out, who knows how to distinguish a Nikkor AI lens with an aperture option, transmitting its set value according to the AI specification from a simple Nikkor without this protrusion of the aperture ring?

    • anonym

By the presence of this protrusion itself)) there I drank on the ring from the bayonet side. The site seemed to have a detailed article about bayonet modifications

      • Vladimir Lvov

Could you tell us in more detail, specifically on the difference between the two lenses, how to distinguish which option AI has?

      • Vladimir Lvov

If there was an article, could you give a link to it?

        • anonym

We raise our eyes up to the very first photo in the article and see a black pipka on the aperture ring (the rightmost object in the photo). Next, we study it in all the photos in the article. Then we realize that this is a hook for the drive of the transmission ring of the diaphragm value to the carcass. Now you can go smoke Google.

  • Vladimir Lvov

Hello! I am interested in your opinion on the question: Which lens is better suited for Nikon with an APS-C matrix (1,5 crop) for a face portrait - Nikon 105mm 1: 2.5 Nikkor AI (as here on the review) or Nikon 135mm 1: 2.8 Nikkor AI?

    • zengarden

Both of them are good, but for 135 matches you have to go much further from the subject.
I can’t compare - I only have 105, but it’s beautiful. Although 85 mm on the crop is personally more convenient for me.

  • Sergei

Good day. Tell me the lens for a large-face portrait, which can be used through an adapter for the KhT-3 fuji (I have native 16 1.4, 35 1.4).

    • Igor

I just have this lens on xt3. I like the picture, but the focus is a bit soft, or I don’t really get into the depth of field, but the sharpness is a little lacking.

      • Sergei

Thanks for the answer. Can you advise other manual lenses that you used.

        • Igor

          I have voigtlander 58 1.4. I really like

  • dima krutov

I have one (one of these with a diaphragm of 2,5) but it seems to be non-ai - the skirt interferes with sitting on the fm, although there should be ai. what picture it gives - I don't know, haven't tried it ..
    85 don't have
