Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 is professional full-frame digital SLR camera. On the Internet, you can find many entries about the fact that the Nikon D800 is an amateur or semi-professional camera from Nikon. This is due to the fact that Nikon's professional cameras can be conditionally divided into flagship professional ones (Nikon D3x, D3s, D4 etc.) and just professional (Nikon D300, D700, D800). Personally, I am of the opinion that the Nikon D800 is a professional camera.

The Nikon D800 camera is made in good tone, the entire body of the camera is made of magnesium alloy, the handles and control dials are rubberized. The camera has weather and dust protection. True, protection against weather conditions will be complete if appropriate lenses are used.

Full frame

Nikon D800 is a full-frame camera, of its kind, Nikon for 2012 has only 2 cameras of this level - this is Nikon D700 and Nikon D800E. Nikon D600 - this is already an amateur full frame. Nikon D800 has on board a whopping 36.8 MP (CMOS sensor). Responsible for image formation 36.3MP, which allow you to take photos 7360 by 4912 pixels... As of Fall 2012, the D800 is the narrowest format camera with the highest pixel count. Have Nikon D800 14 times more MP than the first Nikon D1, Nikon D1h. Of course, it is not the quantity of MP that matters, but the quality. And the quality of these almost 40MP is determined by the dynamic range and the level of noise, color reproduction, etc.

Dynamic range

In addition to being the most 'megapixel' camera, the D800 also has biggest DD (dynamic range) among all digital SLR cameras... The camera attracts most of all with its huge DD. Nikon D800 is a good contender for the victory of numbers over film, which also has a very large photo latitude.

Shooting speed

It's funny, but the shooting speed of the Nikon D800 is maximum 4 frames per second... In fact, 4k / s is the declared speed, the camera itself shoots a little faster, some argue that the speed is 4.6k \ s. Even simpler cropped cameras like Nikon D7000, D90 can click faster for the brand new Nikon D800. High speed shooting is very rare. For my tasks, for example, low shooting speed does not play any role. What, after a long time shooting at Nikon D700, with its 5 fps, I felt very weak the difference between 4 fps on the Nikon D800. By the way, in DX mode, the camera can operate at a speed of 5 k / s, and a little subtlety, if you use MB-D12, then the speed in DX mode will increase to 6 k / s.

Buffer

The buffer is the second very important metric for camera performance. Nikon D800 can accommodate

  • 16 RAW (NEF) images when all additional functions are disabled, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds, ADL, automatic ISO and vignetting control. When it changes compression level and color depth settings, the number of pictures that are placed in the buffer does not change. Symbolic, but in the line Nikon D100 – Nikon D800E the largest buffer remains with the old woman Nikon D200 with her 21 RAWs.
  • 22 JPEG L Fine, 37 JPEG L Norm, 56 images with JPEG L Basic and with all additional functions turned off, and in JPEG image quality priority mode.
  • 15 TIFF images
  • if you enable all additional features, then frame buffer becomes equal to 12 pictures in RAW, 14 TIFF, 21 JPEG.

If you use the maximum that the camera is capable of and shoot in RAW, then continuous shooting with a slow memory card should be enough for at least 4 seconds at 4 frames per second. This is a good indicator, however, this is not enough for serious shooting of dynamic scenes.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Example photo on Nikon D800

Nikon D800 has very heavy files, so if you shoot in RAW with 14-bit color depth and without compression, then only 32 pictures can fit on a 400GB memory card. Files weigh:

  • 75MB in RAW format no compression, 14bit. On the Internet there are a lot of rumors about the size of the pictures, the numbers may differ, since with different compression and color depth The source file may weigh differently.
  • 8-30MB in JPEG L photomat, quality priority.

If we talk about performance, then in my opinion performance label of all CZK NIKON, Nikon D800 in the fall of 2012 holds second place, which already says a lot. Most likely, due to the large file sizes, two memory card slots are provided.

Interesting:

  1. They say that in order to unleash the potential of the Nikon D800 you need lenses with huge resolution, that is, with great sharpness. This turned out to be not entirely true. The sharpness does not change so much when using the same lens, for example, on Nikon D700 with huge pixels and D800 with small pixels. Well, if the sharpness is low, then you can set the sharpness in Picture Control or in Nikon View NX.
  2. Having bought Nikon D800 you can immediately get a good result in the photo. This is also a myth. The camera only helps to take a picture, the photographer and other photo equipment are responsible for everything else. It is important how to take pictures. No need to think that a good DD and a huge number of megapixels will somehow seriously help improve your photos.
  3. Due to the large number of MPs, the effect of stirring affects more than on cameras with fewer MPs. Roughly speaking, take pictures with hand on the Nikon D800 is more difficult, for example, than on Nikon D700, since a large number of MPs are more sensitive to microshifts. I had to take test shots on a 90mm lens with shutter speed no more than 1 \ 200s to completely eliminate the effect of movement. In this case, the amount of MP played a cruel joke
  4. A large number of MPs require a powerful computer and a lot of free disk space. My Core Quad can barely handle heavy RAW files when working in Lightroom.
  5. Nikon D800 has a very large clean viewfinder that covers 100% of the frame, this is not enough in Nikon D700.
  6. Nikon D800E - this is a complete copy of Nikon D800, which was simply removed anti-aliasing filter (in fact, everything is a little more complicated there), thereby increasing the sharpness of the resulting image and at the same time, a greater risk of getting a moire effect on photos and videos.

Video on Nikon D800

The camera can take Full HD video, 1920 * 1080 30k \ s. In P, A, S, M modes, manual and automatic ISO control and correction are possible. exposure. You can select different video quality options. You can also choose which memory card the video will be recorded on. The sound is only mono. The camera has an HDMI output and the ability to connect an external microphone. The main feature of the Nikon D800 is aperture control while shooting a video. That is, finally, Nikon has implemented the ability to fully control the main parameters when shooting video. For example, Nikon D7000, D600, D3s, Nikon D7100 They don’t know how to control the iris while shooting video.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Display

The camera's display is huge, with a diagonal of 3.2 inches. But the Nikon D800 uses the same 921,000 points as in older displays. Nikon D700, D300, D300s, D7000, D90, D3 etc. The display is excellent, it is very pleasant to work with it.

ISO

50 ('Lo1') - 25,600 ('Hi2'). Range without extension is 100-6400. Almost the same as the Nikon D700. The noise level of the Nikon D800 is slightly better for the Nikon D700. ISO 50. very useful when using high-aperture optics in good lighting conditions. You can read about the noise level of all full-frame Nikon cameras in my article 'Image quality of all Nikon FX cameras'.

Focus system

Camera Nikon D800 uses 51 point focusing system with 15 cross-shaped points Multi-CAM3500FX. The 15 center focus points can be operated from F / 5.6 to F / 8.0 and 11 points can be operated from F / 8.0. Operation at high F-numbers is very important when using lenses with teleconverters. It’s a pity that in addition to refining the focus on small apertures, the camera uses a rather old Multi-CAM3500FX, which has not been replaced with anything new. All Nikon full-frame cameras use the Multi-CAM3500FX except the camera Nikon D600... All Nikon D800 focus points are located in the DX area of the image. You can read more about focusing systems in my article 'Focus systems on Nikon cameras'. Nikon D800 It has different focus modes and methods: 3D-tracking, automatic, single-point, etc. The same updated focus module uses Nikon D4.

Two memory cards

Nikon D800 can use two types of memory cards CF (UDMA) and SD (SDHC, SDXC, UHS-I) cards. It would be nice if both slots were for CF cards. You can set up shooting differently using two memory cards. Video is always recorded on only one card, which can be selected in the camera menu.

Measurement exposure

Metering system exposure based on 3D color matrix metering with 91.000 points. You need to get used to the work of the exposure meter of each camera. The exposure meter works quite accurately. exposure almost always what i expected. About measuring systems exposure you can read all Nikon cameras in my article 'Nikon Camera Metering Methods'.

Flash

Nikon D800 Flash supports Creative Lighting Nikon CLS and can remotely control other flashes in TTL auto mode. This is a very useful thing. Minimum excerpt Built-in flash sync is 1 \ 320s. When using external flash units, the Nikon D800 supports high speed sync and can work with flash with shutter speeds up to 1 \ 8000s.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

Battery

The camera uses a new lithium-ion battery EN-EL15. The battery lasts more than 1500 shots, the number of shots on a single charge is highly dependent on the shooting method, lens, etc. The battery is good enough, it's a pity you can’t use it with previous cameras. For example, batteries from my D700, D200, D80, D90 were completely the same.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

The camera has a million additional useful settings.

  1. Function HDR. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketingwhich is very convenient.
  2. Multiple exposure. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketing.
  3. A virtual horizon that is available in live view and in the viewfinder. It is very convenient to program the virtual horizon function for display in the optical viewfinder, for example, using the AE-L / AF-L button.
  4. Programmable Depth of Field View Button
  5. Ability to work with manual optics. You can set the parameters of 10 manual lenses. The photographer who provided me with a camera for review, photographs without problems on the Helios-81N manual lens. More details in the section AI-S и Soviet optics. Of course, Nikon D800 has a built-in focus motor.
  6. Ability to customize everything you can when viewing images
  7. The camera has an interesting 25MP crop mode 1.2x, and the standard 15.3MP crop mode 1.5x
  8. The camera has a USB 3.0 interface
  9. Nikon D800 has a matrix cleaning system. Cleaning can be turned off, or you can turn it on to turn the camera on or off.
  10. Camera Nikon D800 has the ability to fine tune the focus (alignment) for different lenses. This is a very useful feature. In this review, all pictures were taken with the lens Tamron 90mm F2.8SP, my copy requires a focus adjustment of '-15'. Also, you can see sample photos from Nikon D800 without processing in the review Lens Volna-3 and in review Tokina AT-X 235 PRO 20-35mm 1: 2.8.

Personal experience:

When shooting in HDR, the camera does not lower the mirror, but takes all the pictures at once with the mirror raised, while in the camera, besides the shutter curtains, something else is noisy, it seemed unusual to me. Personally, I have a camera Nikon D800 liked it. You should not be afraid or rely on a huge number of megapixels. 36MP are not as strong as they are written about. In general, Nikon D800 is a camera that you can write about endlessly. I practically did not feel the difference when working with Nikon D800 и Nikon D700, only the photos are slightly different. Difference between Nikon D800 и Nikon D700 described in D700 review. If I had a choice between the Nikon D700 and D800, I would not have decided what to purchase, but I would be inclined to the D800 because of the great processing capabilities.

Good day or evening to all! I beg your pardon, I don’t know how it is with you over time. Sam from Kazakhstan.
I would like to make my own five kopecks. Regarding the shake of the so-called lubrication. Still, 36MP and D 810 left their difficulties. Exposure, for example, 1/160 on Tamron 70-200 2.8 with a stub at 165mm focal length The camera copes very well! But try to turn off the stub and the “shake” is provided. So that's what I'm talking about. There is 85mm 1.8G on it I take pictures with a shutter speed multiplied by two from the focal point. Otherwise, blur is often provided. I will attach a photo from Tamron 70-200 2.8 from the Festival “Fore "Held with us in the summer. Like most of them," probably "my hands are still shaking and my good advice to all those who have a line of" Eight Hundreds ", put it out shorter if there is no stub on the lens. It is better to slightly raise Iso but avoid stirring.

  • Timur

Regarding high ISO! Photo taken on iso 4000! I think it's acceptable!

  • Boris

I recently changed my D7100 to D800E! So far, one delight! After the first shots in my hands, I will write a short review:
    - Wider range of diopter adjustment in the viewfinder (for me this is important), but the zoom scale is smaller than on the crop and the frame in the eyepiece does not look much larger than on the D7100.
    - Viewfinder shutter! It will be very useful when shooting with the self-timer!
    - The letter "E" matters! whoever shot on the D7100 and other crop cameras without an AA filter before will undoubtedly appreciate it, the better clarity is probably only in the D810 and Canon 5ds / 5dsr.
    - 36 Mpix. not an excess at all, but a minimal amount of them at FF. Taking into account prepress for per-pixel sharpness, you need to resize to 17-20 megapixels, which gives the output format 30x45 cm at 300 dpi quality, useful for spreading a photo book or for a photo / canvas.
    - In my opinion, ISO 1000 corresponds to the noise level of ISO 400 on the D7100.
    - I like the color rendition more than on the D7100, you can see a lot of color subtleties.
    - Beautiful skin tone is obtained when shooting in Raw and setting Picture control “Portrait” with increasing saturation, in the native converter Capture NX-D.
    - I don't shoot in JPEG, the white balance on the camera does not matter and the detail from Raw is noticeably higher.
    - The dynamic range is noticeably wider against the crop, now I stretch out the shadows less, but for the juiciness of the picture I make an S-shaped curve in the converter.

PS I have been using D800E for only a few weeks; if more experienced users are "eight hundred"
add their tips to unlock the capabilities of this series of cameras, I will be grateful!

    • Denis

It is incorrect to compare Sonikons 800/810 with Pyataks Ds / R. In the latter case - normal multi-pixel sensors, in the first case - soap dish sensors from Aunt Sony. It's like comparing a camera in a phone with a more or less decent camera.
36 Mp Sonikon details merge at times Sigme SD1 Merril with its "geometric" 14,5 Mp. If you need detailing - either Pyataki Ds / R or SD1 Merril. Well, or SF with good optics, if funds allow.
"Possibilities" (almost limitless) of the eight-hundredth series in Nikon are in show-off: you attach a butblock to the carcass, an L-shaped bracket for a tripod (it is not necessary to use it), into a hot shoe any-thing from where to bring the twisted sync cable back into the carcass, then a larger glass a large petal hood (such as 24-70 / 2.8) and voila ... you can make an indelible impression of a cool photographer on others (on those who are not in the subject))))

      • Alexey S.

Denis, I apologize very much in advance, but your comment is typical for a kenon fan fight or a person affiliated with a kenon company, or you have Dsr in your hands and you do not know how to sell it.
You just offended at least a third of all photographers in the world by saying that they use soap dishes, they don’t understand nifig in technology, they buy some bullshit instead of the radiant canon.

If you like Ds / R, use your health. Please do not pour negativity on others, not supported by any facts.

There are a lot of photographers in the world who are disappointed in Ds / R for a number of reasons, in particular due to weak DD, blur due to shutter, noise at low ISO and difficulties in obtaining a clear image, and exorbitant prices relative to competitors. But they are probably not experienced photographers, they just find fault.

The DXOMark website estimates Ds / R matrices (they are now in 35th and 39th place) lower than the crop from Nikon d7200 (33rd place) of the same year. The old woman D800E released back in 2012 still has not left the top 10 best matrices in the world according to DXOMark and is in 9th place.
But probably DXOMark employs illiterate people who don’t understand nikert in matrices, don’t know how to evaluate them, and don’t like kenon. They probably don’t even do experiments, give no measurements, and simply express their opinion.

Many millions of different cameras with Sony sensors have been sold in the world, but according to your comment, all the photographers who use them are not understood in photos.

Peace and goodness to you, Denis.

        • Arkady Shapoval

By the way, you can still compare the D850 with 5DSr :)

        • Denis

And you peace and good, Alex)
With Canon, I had communication only through one video camera (a very long time) and through a small printer (recently acquired).
Regarding Sonikon - no prejudices, everything is based on personal experience.
Yes, the word “is” is written without a soft sign. This is just in case.
DXO tests are like “Behind the Wheel” tests, you can believe them, of course, but…. Everything is not so in life)))
On the contrary, very literate people work in this company and they know what it is possible to mow "greenery" on all year round)
Canon is no more radiant than Hasselblad himself.
But, the policy of all manufacturers is to sell “Nescafe” or some kind of “MacCoffee 3in1” with a show-off and under the guise of real grain coffee. The photography industry is no exception. If I said that the D810 is an ordinary Sony Soap dish under the Nikon sticker, then I have a reason for this)
I'm on Sigma at the moment. Canon I do not PR. Regarding the sink of the Sonikon D810 Sigme SD1Merrll, I have personal comparison data, which I did for myself, to check and make sure. Now there is a desire to formalize and publish it. But it will be such a boooooooo big barrel of ointment in a spoonful of honey for all Nikon fans. Yes, I myself used Nikon until recently (“thanks” to Propyatka for coming to the Nikon F system), until I checked some doubts.
By the way, Propyatka tears these "old women" of the eight-hundredth series on DD to this day. The only drawback is the resolution and detailing + hot pixels on the CCD (although they also come out on the new camera for Sonikon, they are just more noticeable at 6MP than at 36MP).
I'm also familiar with Sonya, i.e. I shot with some specific cameras and I have something to say about, without aspiration: “Oh, this is SONY”.
Yes, I also missed it, the word “pour out” through “and” is written, and not “pour it out.
You are not on a short leg with a diploma, and here we are trying to communicate about physics / optics and photography.

Good to you, Alex. Buy a book, some good one, read it, learn a language.

Yes, Arkady, you can compare. Only if the test itself is technically correct. But, I do not think that a global discovery is coming there. The test will not show anything new.

          • Valentine

Very emotional. What's the point? Is your camera tearing mine? Yes to health. If I can bring the shot from my camera to the desired result and it suits me, then shower me with all this tar - I will still stay with my camera. You are too keen on technical parameters (DD, resolution, CCD, Sony / not Sony), and these technical parameters, although important, are ultimately not decisive. Not decisive, because for a long time already, many cameras have reached a level sufficient for a high-quality result in most tasks. And only some specific tasks and areas require special technology, but there are different budgets and other requirements.

          • Pokekmon

            2 Denis:
It so happened that I also have SD-1 Merrill and there is Nikonovsky FF.
Saying like you: "If I said that the D810 is an ordinary Sony Soap dish under the Nikon sticker, then I have a reason for this)"
I would not risk it, for you are cunning, Denis. And you know that you are disingenuous.
SD1 has serious flaws that do not allow it to be compared with modern Nikons.
            1) Narrow DD. Yes, even on SDQH it’s problematic to shoot in hard sunlight.
            2) Slowness / focus errors.
            3) A small frame buffer and frankly depressing work with fast flash drives.
            4) Low working ISO - at the level of CCD matrices. ISO 400 conditionally working.
            5) Work with RAVs exclusively in the braked Sigma PHOTO PRO.
Merrill / Quattro horse sharpness and detail is not a panacea.
DD is narrow, even at low ISOs. The exposure meter on the SD1 makes him hate.
SDQH with APS-H crop1.3 matrix is a step forward.
For Nikon, it’s enough to take a good sharp modern glass and there will be no regrets about the detail.

            • Pokekmon

Yes, and also Denis. You have forgotten how many focus points are on the CD1 and how they are all "well" located in the center. And the extreme points work badly - the glass misses on them. And in the center they are all located because Sigma stuck in the focusing sensor from the old SD14 / SD15 model with a 1.7 (!) Crop matrix and where the points really sat as they should, and not in the center.

              • Oleg

Write a review of Sigma, I think many will be interested. Very uncommon system

            • Denis

Yes, Merril has a number of serious shortcomings in comparison with the incomparable Nikon: he does not shoot video, there is no “auto” mode, there is no Wi-Fi with jeepies and stereo microphones (in general, I can't imagine how you can take pictures without a microphone?)
SPP is a completely adequate and convenient program, and rush is needed only in a couple of well-known cases and they have nothing to do with photography)
It's nice to read expert photographs who need cross focus sensors at the very corners of the frame, because they don’t take photos with less than 30-50 frames in RAW in complete darkness at ISO less than 25600)
Look, for the sake of interest, those. parameters of medium-format digital backs of the same PhaseOne / Mamiya of the very recent previous generation, you simply burst into tears from “wretchedness”: there are also no ISOs above 800 and no rate of fire, but the result is absolutely different in every sense.
I am not dissembling and not cunning, here with "craftiness" on the verge of an outright divorce it carries from the websites of many manufacturers: "Buy our magic cameras and lenses and immediately get a super-masterpiece (without even removing the lens cap)."
Okay, consider that you have won a reasoned dispute about Nikonov's unconditional “victory”. Enjoy)

              • Pokekmon

Denis, the point is not in victory, but in objectivity.
For a long time I talked with the owners of different Sigma in the photo_.ru forum.
Somehow, many came to the conclusion that Sigma is good for:
                1) For the soul, for shooting under the mood.
                2) For shooting in good weather, in soft sunlight (but it is absolutely impossible to shoot in backlight), there is nothing to do with it in cloudy weather - the camera is keenly in love with light.
                3) For a leisurely landscape shot.
                4) In order to be a good second camera.
Merrill / Quattro is a good addition to the main FF DSLR. It doesn't matter Canon or Nikon. I do not have a negative attitude towards Canon (this was earlier and then only to crop 1.6), on the contrary, I hope to save up for 1Dsmk3 or the first 1DX.
Let it be like a third camera, if I buy it.
I really like the color and DD on 1DX / 1DXm2 and 5DMk4.
About modern FF Nikon - they are convenient and they work almost flawlessly and you can rely on them. The focusing is good, the BB is tolerable, the light meter is very good almost everywhere (I didn't like it on the D600 / D610). It is quite possible to buy any modern FF Canon (except for the 3rd penny because it is a little outdated).

              • Pokekmon

                I have SD1 with a 35 / 1.4 glass. I bought them new.
Despite the fact that this is an ambiguous camera. I will not sell it yet, because a lot of money has been spent on it.
Because bought a bunch of batteries and a rare butblock - the camera eats them like an alcoholic.
Perhaps I will buy more glass, but with glasses for the Sigma SA bayonet byada - there are even fewer of them than for Pentax.
There are few of them actually produced, and it is very difficult to find them on sale.
Sigma is an interesting camera with its own vision of light and color. It's hard with her. Sigma cameras generally do not fit anything other than a leisurely landscape or studio photography in good (or perfect) light.
But she has her fans. I originally had pink glasses on the theme of Foveon. But they are quickly eroded by a good new FF from Nikon / Canon.
Borrow a D750 or 5DMK4 at the box office and take a day with them around the city from morning to evening and night and immediately understand what I mean.

Minor correction, Denis. The words "is" and "are" both have the right to exist. It all depends on the context in the used sentence in accordance with the rules of the Great and Mighty. For example: Matrix D810 ,, is ”on the 34th place according to the rating of the above-mentioned company. BUT!
D810 matrix over time, because everything develops, it will be, most likely, in a different place in the ranking.
            All the best!
            (Amateur😊)
PS For some reason I am a supporter of NIKON, and D810E, in particular. Although the choice of optics at Canon more.😊🖐️

      • Sergos

merril-c APS-C matrix and it is not necessary to compare it with ff. besides, selling it is problematic, very problematic - all around people who do not understand anything in photography, these people in the amount of millions buy sony products with sensor-soap matrices and the idiotic nikon company also took the bait for sony. , but it was necessary to think about foveon!

        • Pokemon

It makes no sense to jerk.
To each his own - I bought it for myself and I do not regret it, because there are other cameras available for any nonsense.
If you buy a camera only for the purpose of selling it later, then it’s better to buy something simpler and more understandable for people.
Comparison of Foveon and D800E went long ago with one or two Russian-language resources about 7-8 years ago, and m. from somewhere abroad, it doesn't matter. The comparison is wrong, but now it’s all the same, since the ecosystem history on the Sigma SA mount has been covered since this year. Sigma will do the matrix on Foveone in collaboration with Panasonic and Lake.

    And when will the d810 d500, d7200, d7500, d5600 review?

    • zengarden

Probably when you provide the camera data to the author for a review :)

  • Koba

Today I managed to shoot with the D7500 and my suspicions were confirmed once again. Nikon has definitely updated the method of color processing of images, my personal opinion is now that they just worked hard to ensure that people were satisfied with the skins, otherwise there were too many complaints and all this frightened people or took them to the kenon. This is purely my opinion, but now Nikon even went further and not only skin tones, but all colors are reproduced noticeably better than, say, from my Canon 5D3, at first I did not even believe it, but this is now a fact, I noticed it from the D500, maybe this is a little “to blame” for the excellent matrix in both of these cameras, but actually, what's the difference ... But I personally didn't like the colors of the D800, D810, D750, the 5D3 has a better camera color. But, no one forbade, and it is even recommended that everyone understand a little about color editing in a graphics editor, for example, study the book by Dan Margulis, and then in a couple of minutes it will be possible to correct any camera error in terms of color, and not only. After all, Kenon is not 100 percent accurate, you still need to correct the color ...

    • photo shooter

have a couple of frames? and how is the detail?

      • Koba

I can't post the shots, but the detailing in it is just fine, sometimes it seems to me that at lower megapixels the detail is even higher than with the D7200, or this may be due to the high diffraction threshold. Still, I can say for sure that when I compared the old 16 megapixel Pentax K5 iis without a filter with the same 3 megapixel Pentax K24 and also without an anti-aliasing filter, the old K5iis definitely showed more details, and the older Mojel turned small details into mush, especially it was visible at medium and high ISO ... D7500 is an excellent camera in my opinion and some limitations in the form of one card and removing a screwdriver can be forgiven. Just a gorgeous camera, very fast, autofocus works like on purely professional cameras, up to 3200 you can shoot without hesitation and then process files in a fairly wide range ...

I photographed on d500 (not many frames) at 17-55 and 50 1,8 so the colors are BOMB !!!!! but with detail (or micro-contrast) not much. Maybe I did the wrong thing ...

  • photo shooter

I switched to FF. There were several options (I'm talking about Nikon). Arkady advised to take the D800 among the two cameras (it was at a good price) ... ..And I'm not overjoyed !!!!! Bomb!!!! Detailing. paint, contrast !!!!!! At the expense of shake - unless without a flash and on long FR and then in very bad light !!!! Skinton is also normal (I don’t like it - there is a RAV, there is a PictureControl adjustment) ... In general, people, before speaking shoto - try this device - and everything will fall into place! Thanks to Arkady for the advice !!!!!

  • Simon

Ravas are not shown for download sorry ...

Such is the problem with the D800, although it may not be a problem at all, but should it be so? I tried to take pictures in LV mode - after the shutter is triggered, the screen goes out for a couple of seconds ... it seems that while the file is being written from the buffer to the card, then everything is visible again ...
I would like not to go out, but all the time it was visible through a prism. :))

    • Dmitry

When working, live-view, the shutter is open, the light enters the matrix and the picture is transferred to the screen as it is. When shooting, the shutter closes, the camera exits the live-view mode, then a picture takes place (shutter-mirror up), then the camera returns to live-view mode, the mirror rises again and the shutter opens again. It is quite logical that with so many body movements the picture disappears for a while, and then reappears.

  • Irina

Good afternoon. The question may be similar to the above, but still. There is a dilemma: I want to switch to FF from the D7200 crop. There is a good price D800 (not D800E). Glasses were bought initially for the FF perspective (24-70, tamron 15-30). Is it worth it to take, or continue to “accumulate capital” on the D810? I shoot both reportage and portraits. Thanks.

    • Boris

IMHO, d810 is better than 800-ki, but not to the extent that they differ in price. I switched from d7100 to d800e, quite satisfied. Just pay attention to the condition and mileage if you buy used. I also like that d800s are made in Japan. If possible, after buying the FF, leave the d7200 as a spare, convenient for work and reliable if the shooting is responsible. This comparison with test shots of the same plot helped me in choosing FF:

Now, as they say, I am on a long business trip abroad. I work at school as a computer science teacher. Well, as usual all the events, or rather their video photography on me. I have been picking up the kit for exactly a year. And considering that I am writing under the D800 review, I chose this particular model with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70 m 1: 2.8G ED lens, etc. There was an opportunity to try ALL 800 options ** ... I am happy as an elephant ... GORGEOUS SET FOR A REASONABLE PRICE! I am an experienced amateur ... I also held Zenit-ET with Helios-44M in my hands .. but I cannot call myself advanced (I cannot yet) So this is what I want to say ... after trying everything ...
    1. Reviews of Arcadia are quite accurate ... and I had the opportunity to test a lot))))
    2. All the most popular "+" and "-" D800 reviews in life are just such
    3. Taking this high-tech creature in my hands, I personally find myself on the planet of photographers, or as Slutsky used to say: “This is space”.
    4. I have a lens without VR !!!!, and so it turned out in life, my hands are shaking a little. This kit simply ignores this .. the main thing is to work with shutter speed priority))))
    5. The aperture priority and tripod are awesome.
    6. Koreans (those who are southern) understand the technique (though they themselves respect Canon), but when they see the D800 strap, they always come up, clap their shoulders and express an average degree of admiration in their croaking language))))

MAIN CONCLUSION: the best camera is the one that after the next photo shoot you want to pick up again the next morning. I WISH EVERYONE TO FIND YOUR PHOTO CAMERA AND BECOME A LITTLE HAPPY!

ARKADIUM unlimited thanks for the reviews and virtual tips !!!

    • Edward

      4. - it is not necessary to switch from aperture priority to shutter priority in order for the camera to select the shutter speed values you need
You can put the recommended ISO, while maintaining the ability to change it to the camera
leave the iso - auto - but set the value you need
then the camera will try to save the iso you have chosen, and based on it, choose the shutter speed, and only if you cannot select the shutter speed value so that the frame is normally exposed, then the camera will change the ISO from the recommended one - by you

(the selection range can also be edited)

      also true for other modes

  • Natalia

Good evening! Thanks for the detailed article!
Arkady, tell me, please, is it worth taking d800 (800s) in 2018 for shooting on vacation, on weekends, nature and family (amateur)?
I can’t find clear information about whether she is getting normal skin color? Or is it better to purchase another Nikon camera (which one)? Now I have a d3200 and there are several lenses, so I do not want to change the system to Canon.

    • Arkady Shapoval

As usual - it's worth it or not - it's up to you. The D800 itself is now an actual camera. Skinton is a complex and big topic, I don't think that after q3200 it will be the most important.

    • Pokekmon

      D800 / D800e a lot with mileage from 50 thousand and above.
After the D3200, the camera may seem heavy and the home computer may slow down due to the weight of the rails. Also, if your hands are weak, there is a risk of getting a stir and lubrication.
The lenses that you currently use on the D3200 are not necessarily suitable. D800 / D800e is sensitive to good optics. If you are looking for a camera from a friend, borrow a photo for a day or two.
It seems to me that with the same budget it is more interesting to take the more recent d750.

      • Edward

the more weight - the less shaking, Newton's second law

about sensitivity to good optics, this is a very very controversial thing
with the same lenses, the d800 will give better clarity than the d750. with a crop of 1 to 1, unsharp spots will no longer be sharp, but no one forces you to make a crop of 1 to 1.

d800 has a shutter resource of 200 frames
        d750 - 150
those even if you take d800 at 50 tk then it's like the new d750

d800 is heavier than mk there is an all-metal case - unlike d750 where the case is the same as in the d7000 line

about the fact that 36 m pixels, by themselves, cause a stir, it’s difficult to agree
the pixel density here is less than d3200 - hence the high photosensitivity

        750 also has advantages
        burst speed, wifi, rotary display

but if the speed of continuous shooting is important, then it is better to take d500
there is 4k video, and autofocus like on d5
        ...........
in general - I would choose according to the principle - if the speed of continuous shooting and autofocus are important - d500, if not - d800 / d810 / d850
d750 I would not take - ihmo is a strange compromise camera, which should have been called d620 - the same body, the same matrix, the main difference is autofocus

about the price - even now the average cost of d750 is significantly lower than that of d800 - although it is newer, the initial cost was also lower - almost $ 1000
close value in rubles was due to changes in exchange rates

        • Misha

Many acquaintances at 610 and 750 had shutters on runs under 80 thousand very unreliable cameras

    • Valentine

No, for the described tasks, you do not need to take the D800. D3200 is enough for this with a margin, and most likely you have not fully learned how to work with it if the frames from it seem to you not good enough. Believe me, amateur shooting on the D3200 for a family album can be very, very good. If you really outgrew the D3200, then you would clearly understand what it is weak in and what the D800 is strong in, which means you would not have a question about the D800.

  • anonym

Tell me, owners of d800, are there any significant problems with autofocus? And how are they solved? if you buy a boo camera without a guarantee - is there a chance to hand it over for repairs for money?

    • 123

If you buy used goods from hand, then services are accepted for repair naturally for money.

    • 123

The autofocus module on the D800 is very good - from older cameras.
The problem with the D800 is shake and green. AF does not apply here and works correctly with Nikon proprietary lenses. And with all sorts of tampons, especially sigma and tokens, no one grants anything. Those. as God will put on your soul.

      • anonym

And what kind of "green"? Is it about skinton or that the camera screen is green?

        • 123

BB withdrawal to greens. Let's say on the street, a green banner is hanging next to the house, a green car is standing next to it, green grass is on the road.
In addition to the fact that the saturation of green on the grass, the banner and the car will be too high, the asphalt and gray buildings will be greenish. This is especially noticeable in cloudy weather.
On the D800 / D800E, the most disgusting move to the greens that I saw. Even the first Nikon CMOSs weren’t so annoying.

          • anonym

Thanks for the information! What is better then - 810, 750? Are there such problems?

Photouser, I also want to go from 7100) how do you like CF cards, is it convenient? And how much weigh a lot of pictures? I looked at the test ones - there are the same 40 MB, I can't find the declared 75-80 MB.
Does the focusing system often lie? As far as I understand, 800 has a related AF with 7100 ...

              • photo shooter

if the speed card - no problem. pictures in equal - about 40 mb, (I use with lossless compression, rarely when to the maximum). Focusing is excellent, I even shoot a leisurely report (no problem, of course there are SOMETIMES mistakes, but sooo little, so as not to say that there is no). unusual after 7100 - coverage of the AF area. (at first not enough, but then everything is ok).

              • Jury

if you take the D800 from your hands, then the autofocus must be checked first. In the first models there was a marriage with the setting at the autofocus factory, you need to check by focusing on the left and right edges of the sensors. If you select the correct correction for the left side of the sensors, you do not get the focus on the right side, there will be a direct road to the service.

            • 123

How will I throw them to you?
              1) Do not attach them to the post
              2) The joyozhiva-antispam itself or something like that doesn’t miss links. I already tried and did not pass.
              3) There is no marriage from this camera on the PC right now and I won’t save it specially for someone to show it and prove something on the forums. Who has a normal monitor at home will see everything himself. With D800, it used 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G and 24-120 / 4G.
Concrete greens come with 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G, with 24-120 / 4G less, but also enough.
AvtoBB on this camera with these glasses is better not to leave, and constantly monitor according to the situation depending on the light, otherwise it will be withdrawn to the green.
              4) I got rid of these glasses and D800. Took for a while to use a friend's D750 with 24-85 / 3.5-4.5G everything is normal there. Now I sit at home without glasses and without a camera - most likely I will take the D850 + 24-70 / 2.8, I have not decided for myself yet.
Here, another friend seduces with pictures from the A7RM3 - there is an amazing matrix, but alas, everything else does not fit.
I am free from religion and the result and convenience are simply important to me.
I got rid of the 800s, which I am very happy about. Avito is full of offers from these cameras. Everyone who sells it, then crosses themselves three times.

              • 123

I can add that 750 is more like than 800.
750 is lighter and more compact and fits well in the hand and is more versatile in operation.
Above the working ISO - as on D4 almost, at high ISO the picture does not fade and does not become covered with noise. Autofocus on the D750 is excellent. There is no stirring.
And the d800 / d800e is not without reason a lot on Avito with low price tags. People are not getting rid of good things.

my opinion (maybe I'm just comparing with the 7100) - so 800 is a wonderful device.

    • Valentine

D800 is an excellent device, and the specified features are nothing more than nuances. I have not seen any complaints from Prof. photographers shooting with the D800 that they get poor results because of this. A strange situation lies elsewhere that D800 amateurs are trying to buy. That is, this jackhammer, on which commercial photographers shoot 40-50 thousand frames per year, is bought by ... amateurs who make 2-3 thousand frames. By the way, the D7100 is also a great camera. What did you personally find in the D800 that you couldn't get with the D7100?

      • photo shooter

wide angle (a very big difference with the crop), resolution (crop as much as you like, which is very convenient for reporting (unhurried)), there is noise at high ISOs, but don't laugh, so to speak "noble", the result of high-aperture optics is quite different, dd, in the studio you don't really admire this unit at all…. I did not say that the 7100 is a bad machine!)))))

        • Valentine

Oh my god ... Okay, that's fair. Thanks.

          • Boris

You can also add that on d800s compared to d7100 there is no banding on high ISOs or when drawing shadows)) Also from personal experience.

I wonder what could be the reason for the lack of shooting Nikon d810 video with Helios 40-2 1,5-85 MS, a new design with Nikon F mount?

        • Arkady Shapoval

Somewhere in the settings, something is not right.

          • Garry

D800 shoots video without a lens at all

              • Garry

The 810 also shoots without a lens, as soon as you put Helios, that's it, the record button does not work. Shoveled the Internet, asked friends, instructions read, no answer.

            • Jury

and with a native lens Nikon, shoots a video? maybe the mount of this Helios, when installed, what kind of contacts does it close on the carcass? The camera shoots video with any lens, with or without a chip, with and without a jump lever (I can only judge by the D800).

              • Garry

With native lenses, as well as with third-party electronically controlled lenses. Shoots also without a lens. Also thoughts about closing contacts. It's a pity.

    Arkady, tell me.
I have d300s but I plan to switch to ff. What do you advise. thanks

    • Valentine

There is too little information, so they can advise anything from D600 to D5. You would somehow concretize your tasks, subjects of shooting, the park of available optics. And it turns out that you have to be a telepath ...

      • Maxli

Yes, probably not so put it. This is the second device, the first was 3200. I take pictures of myself, a hobby. Of optics, nothing so heavy-duty and expensive. Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and sigma 10-20 f3.5-5. I photograph mainly relatives and sometimes nature as well as the city.
I read a lot about everything. Likely probably 500, but alas the price…. on this I think to try the full frame.
        Thanks in advance.

        • Valentine

Sigma for a crop, and tamron, if satisfied, will go. The similarity with the D300s - D700 / D800 is important, but heavy and not the most modern. Smaller and lighter for advanced D600 / D610 / D750 enthusiasts. The cheapest and generally quite a good option) D600, but the caveat is to check that the shutter is replaced under Nikon warranty. After the D300s, the location of the focusing points may be unusual - everything is crowded into the center, and the very feeling of the camera. I tried the D700 / D800 / D600, but I didn't switch to ff. It is not a fact that you will gain a lot from changing the camera. Good DD, high working ISO, transmission of midtones and shadows, the raves are excellent in terms of exposure and colors, but here all the nuances and subjective interpretation. For personal purposes (not for commercial filming), if you are on friendly terms with the raves, it seems that the frames from simpler crops are very suitable, and the point in spending extra money is not so obvious.

  • A. Smooth

Latest news. The D850 uses a Sony sensor. IMX309AQJ is a modified sensor from A7RIII made to specifications from Nikon.

So the question is, what should I switch to if the difference in modern cameras is only in ergonomics and image processing? Moreover, the latter is so often processed on a PC.

    PS
RELATED: In D800 installed IMX094AQP Sony itself has not previously used this sensor.

  • Misha

Many people say that they need very good optics for ff. I’ll tell you what I took off on the Nikon d7200 with its small pixels and on the d800 with the same lens, so the photo quality came out better with the d800 because the sensor’s area is more than crop 2.25 times and almost no one takes it into account

  • Owner D800

I always read “Radozhiva” with pleasure, I want to share my problem and pain. I downloaded the latest firmware for D800 from Nikon's official website, installed it and ... the camera stopped seeing all third-party lenses. The Sigmas and Tamrons were turned into pieces of iron, plastic and glass. Manual focus only. Hopeless darkness ... I spent half a day on the forums, everyone writes about the rollback to the old firmware, but we could not find it. Everyone who knows how to solve the problem, please come back!

Good afternoon! When choosing a used Nikon D800E with 106k shutter mileage, what should you look for? Especially if the owner is a professional photographer (landscape painter, traveler or wedding).

    • anonym

Pay attention to another seller or to the prices in the repair shops. He worked his depreciation cost of his 2000 rubles, and sell for * 0000.

      • Eugene

Other sellers (also positioning themselves as pros) have more serious runs (for 300 and more than thousands), and the condition in the photo is not ice (for some, the gum fell off, for someone the body is seriously scratched), and the prices of interest percent are 15 higher even on carcasses. Standard glass 24-70 automatically adds 60% on top

        • Pokemon

Among the so-called pros, there are many hucksters who want to enter paradise on a troika with bells at someone else's expense. I mean, to buy a brand new camera, and naive buyers to steam up the conchits at inflated prices, puffing out their cheeks and saying that the camera is in good condition.

    • Pokemon

External state - if the camera is greasy or shiny or the gum has fallen off - nafig. Look at the condition of the matrix - there were complaints about the oil on the matrix in the worn-out d800 / d800e in the photo-py and other forums. This is partly why I refused to buy this camera. Also look at the bayonet ring on the camera. It shouldn't be badly scratched.

As for the appearance: all the rubber bands are in place, the case is slightly worn out (paint peeled off in some places), labels for 2/3 buttons are erased by 85%, both screens are intact, without scratches and chips. The matrix is visually clean, no traces of oil are visible, there are a couple of dust particles that appear in the image (the owner promised to eliminate it for free). The bayonet ring of the camera has a couple of shallow scratches on its strength.
It can be seen that the camera was used in the tail and mane (as well as the majority of the 800-k, which came across on our secondary), but without fanaticism.

Erased 2/3 of the buttons indicates that the user is hard. For a 100k run, this is not the norm. For 300k, yes.
See for yourself, but if you are from Russia, then Avito on Moscow time and on ebay (the Japanese) still have 800 matches in a more recent state.

I assume that the shutter has already been changed, although someone said that some especially cunning ones simply reset the frame counter and take it further. In short, I’ll talk with the owner, go to the service for diagnostics, and there an autopsy will show.
I myself am from Kazakhstan. Avito used it once when he bought AF Nikkor 35-70 f / 2.8 glass (although there were a lot of dances with a tambourine), reluctance to deal with eBay

Mileage is very serious, 500-700 thousand. This is a living corpse.

      Remove heat with a hairdryer.
The size is restored by immersion for 5-10 minutes in gasoline, followed by drying for 2-3 days, and repeated until the desired size is reached.
Glue the Crystal moment with glue, having previously degreased the surface with gasoline.

At one time, we soaked the gum in a kalosh, the main thing is not to overexpose, otherwise it will become less than the norm))) It is better to soak a little at a time, with drying for 2-3 days and fitting - as advised above.

For those who want to form an opinion about the color rendering with different lenses at the output of this Nikon D800 camera - you can see examples on https://pixelpeeper.com/cameras/?camera=1657

Thanks for the link! Very useful when choosing optics. At the moment, I use my native Nikonovsky 24-120 mm f / 4.0 and recently bought a fix for portraits - Tamron 45 mm f / 1.8 Both on D800E.
First, very satisfied. For a landscape - very happy. Not very suitable for portraits. Mainly because of the geometry. (The problem is apparently all zooms) The second, Tamron, has just started to use it. But the impressions are very positive. He's more creative, so to speak.
There was an idea to buy a 45 mm Tamron instead of 35 mm. For a wider angle. But, having looked at examples of photographs, I realized that I had made the right choice. 45 mm is what you need, but for a more angle, you need to take 28 mm, if fix. Or Zoom at 17-35. But with a zoom, you have to put up with geometry ...

    Good day to all!
I read the review and leafed through the comments and decided to write about my impressions of using the D800E.
The first DSLR was a Nikon D50 with a standard lens. After the olympus digital camera, you finally have a flying device. The main thing is the ability to independently decide when and what shooting parameters to set.
After 2 years of working with this camera, I bought a D7000 from a used one. The one with the filter. Opportunities for creative search have expanded even more. I used the camera for several years, but when I bought a lens for FF for it, I realized that the only thing that doesn’t suit me in the D7000 is detail. And since the lens was from FF, there was no point in changing the D7000 to the D7100 and higher. Therefore, after a long search, I purchased a used D800E camera. And now, from my own experience, I can say that the D800 has simply gorgeous color density and its reproduction in the picture. Excellent detail in the frame. (Naturally, in comparison with everything that I used before.)
There are flaws in color, but ... most of them are the cause of my personal mistakes when choosing shooting parameters. If D50 and D7000 forgave it, then with D800 it was necessary to approach shooting more carefully. Even starting with the menu settings.
As a result, the D800 camera is more demanding on the photographer himself. And the point here is not even professionalism, but the ability to combine personal vision of light, color and shape in the scene, with the capabilities of the camera. And it doesn't matter who is the manufacturer of the matrix and what mega-newest bells and whistles have been “shoved” into it. It is much more important to get the desired creative result, and not to achieve some “cool” parameters of the frame itself at the output.
Ideal cameras, like ideal people, do not exist. And remember that the best camera is exactly the one in your hands.
    All creative success.
