Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 is professional full-frame digital SLR camera. On the Internet, you can find many entries about the fact that the Nikon D800 is an amateur or semi-professional camera from Nikon. This is due to the fact that Nikon's professional cameras can be conditionally divided into flagship professional ones (Nikon D3x, D3s, D4 etc.) and just professional (Nikon D300, D700, D800). Personally, I am of the opinion that the Nikon D800 is a professional camera.

The Nikon D800 camera is made in good tone, the entire body of the camera is made of magnesium alloy, the handles and control dials are rubberized. The camera has weather and dust protection. True, protection against weather conditions will be complete if appropriate lenses are used.

Full frame

Nikon D800 is a full-frame camera, of its kind, Nikon for 2012 has only 2 cameras of this level - this is Nikon D700 and Nikon D800E. Nikon D600 - this is already an amateur full frame. Nikon D800 has on board a whopping 36.8 MP (CMOS sensor). Responsible for image formation 36.3MP, which allow you to take photos 7360 by 4912 pixels... As of Fall 2012, the D800 is the narrowest format camera with the highest pixel count. Have Nikon D800 14 times more MP than the first Nikon D1, Nikon D1h. Of course, it is not the quantity of MP that matters, but the quality. And the quality of these almost 40MP is determined by the dynamic range and the level of noise, color reproduction, etc.

Dynamic range

In addition to being the most 'megapixel' camera, the D800 also has biggest DD (dynamic range) among all digital SLR cameras... The camera attracts most of all with its huge DD. Nikon D800 is a good contender for the victory of numbers over film, which also has a very large photo latitude.

Shooting speed

It's funny, but the shooting speed of the Nikon D800 is maximum 4 frames per second... In fact, 4k / s is the declared speed, the camera itself shoots a little faster, some argue that the speed is 4.6k \ s. Even simpler cropped cameras like Nikon D7000, D90 can click faster for the brand new Nikon D800. High speed shooting is very rare. For my tasks, for example, low shooting speed does not play any role. What, after a long time shooting at Nikon D700, with its 5 fps, I felt very weak the difference between 4 fps on the Nikon D800. By the way, in DX mode, the camera can operate at a speed of 5 k / s, and a little subtlety, if you use MB-D12, then the speed in DX mode will increase to 6 k / s.

Buffer

The buffer is the second very important metric for camera performance. Nikon D800 can accommodate

  • 16 RAW (NEF) images when all additional functions are disabled, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds, ADL, automatic ISO and vignetting control. When it changes compression level and color depth settings, the number of pictures that are placed in the buffer does not change. Symbolic, but in the line Nikon D100 – Nikon D800E the largest buffer remains with the old woman Nikon D200 with her 21 RAWs.
  • 22 JPEG L Fine, 37 JPEG L Norm, 56 images with JPEG L Basic and with all additional functions turned off, and in JPEG image quality priority mode.
  • 15 TIFF images
  • if you enable all additional features, then frame buffer becomes equal to 12 pictures in RAW, 14 TIFF, 21 JPEG.

If you use the maximum that the camera is capable of and shoot in RAW, then continuous shooting with a slow memory card should be enough for at least 4 seconds at 4 frames per second. This is a good indicator, however, this is not enough for serious shooting of dynamic scenes.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Example photo on Nikon D800

Nikon D800 has very heavy files, so if you shoot in RAW with 14-bit color depth and without compression, then only 32 pictures can fit on a 400GB memory card. Files weigh:

  • 75MB in RAW format no compression, 14bit. On the Internet there are a lot of rumors about the size of the pictures, the numbers may differ, since with different compression and color depth The source file may weigh differently.
  • 8-30MB in JPEG L photomat, quality priority.

If we talk about performance, then in my opinion performance label of all CZK NIKON, Nikon D800 in the fall of 2012 holds second place, which already says a lot. Most likely, due to the large file sizes, two memory card slots are provided.

Interesting:

  1. They say that in order to unleash the potential of the Nikon D800 you need lenses with huge resolution, that is, with great sharpness. This turned out to be not entirely true. The sharpness does not change so much when using the same lens, for example, on Nikon D700 with huge pixels and D800 with small pixels. Well, if the sharpness is low, then you can set the sharpness in Picture Control or in Nikon View NX.
  2. Having bought Nikon D800 you can immediately get a good result in the photo. This is also a myth. The camera only helps to take a picture, the photographer and other photo equipment are responsible for everything else. It is important how to take pictures. No need to think that a good DD and a huge number of megapixels will somehow seriously help improve your photos.
  3. Due to the large number of MPs, the effect of stirring affects more than on cameras with fewer MPs. Roughly speaking, take pictures with hand on the Nikon D800 is more difficult, for example, than on Nikon D700, since a large number of MPs are more sensitive to microshifts. I had to take test shots on a 90mm lens with shutter speed no more than 1 \ 200s to completely eliminate the effect of movement. In this case, the amount of MP played a cruel joke
  4. A large number of MPs require a powerful computer and a lot of free disk space. My Core Quad can barely handle heavy RAW files when working in Lightroom.
  5. Nikon D800 has a very large clean viewfinder that covers 100% of the frame, this is not enough in Nikon D700.
  6. Nikon D800E - this is a complete copy of Nikon D800, which was simply removed anti-aliasing filter (in fact, everything is a little more complicated there), thereby increasing the sharpness of the resulting image and at the same time, a greater risk of getting a moire effect on photos and videos.

Video on Nikon D800

The camera can take Full HD video, 1920 * 1080 30k \ s. In P, A, S, M modes, manual and automatic ISO control and correction are possible. exposure. You can select different video quality options. You can also choose which memory card the video will be recorded on. The sound is only mono. The camera has an HDMI output and the ability to connect an external microphone. The main feature of the Nikon D800 is aperture control while shooting a video. That is, finally, Nikon has implemented the ability to fully control the main parameters when shooting video. For example, Nikon D7000, D600, D3s, Nikon D7100 They don’t know how to control the iris while shooting video.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Display

The camera's display is huge, with a diagonal of 3.2 inches. But the Nikon D800 uses the same 921,000 points as in older displays. Nikon D700, D300, D300s, D7000, D90, D3 etc. The display is excellent, it is very pleasant to work with it.

ISO

50 ('Lo1') - 25,600 ('Hi2'). Range without extension is 100-6400. Almost the same as the Nikon D700. The noise level of the Nikon D800 is slightly better for the Nikon D700. ISO 50. very useful when using high-aperture optics in good lighting conditions. You can read about the noise level of all full-frame Nikon cameras in my article 'Image quality of all Nikon FX cameras'.

Focus system

Camera Nikon D800 uses 51 point focusing system with 15 cross-shaped points Multi-CAM3500FX. The 15 center focus points can be operated from F / 5.6 to F / 8.0 and 11 points can be operated from F / 8.0. Operation at high F-numbers is very important when using lenses with teleconverters. It’s a pity that in addition to refining the focus on small apertures, the camera uses a rather old Multi-CAM3500FX, which has not been replaced with anything new. All Nikon full-frame cameras use the Multi-CAM3500FX except the camera Nikon D600... All Nikon D800 focus points are located in the DX area of the image. You can read more about focusing systems in my article 'Focus systems on Nikon cameras'. Nikon D800 It has different focus modes and methods: 3D-tracking, automatic, single-point, etc. The same updated focus module uses Nikon D4.

Two memory cards

Nikon D800 can use two types of memory cards CF (UDMA) and SD (SDHC, SDXC, UHS-I) cards. It would be nice if both slots were for CF cards. You can set up shooting differently using two memory cards. Video is always recorded on only one card, which can be selected in the camera menu.

Measurement exposure

Metering system exposure based on 3D color matrix metering with 91.000 points. You need to get used to the work of the exposure meter of each camera. The exposure meter works quite accurately. exposure almost always what i expected. About measuring systems exposure you can read all Nikon cameras in my article 'Nikon Camera Metering Methods'.

Flash

Nikon D800 Flash supports Creative Lighting Nikon CLS and can remotely control other flashes in TTL auto mode. This is a very useful thing. Minimum excerpt Built-in flash sync is 1 \ 320s. When using external flash units, the Nikon D800 supports high speed sync and can work with flash with shutter speeds up to 1 \ 8000s.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

Battery

The camera uses a new lithium-ion battery EN-EL15. The battery lasts more than 1500 shots, the number of shots on a single charge is highly dependent on the shooting method, lens, etc. The battery is good enough, it's a pity you can’t use it with previous cameras. For example, batteries from my D700, D200, D80, D90 were completely the same.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

The camera has a million additional useful settings.

  1. Function HDR. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketingwhich is very convenient.
  2. Multiple exposure. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketing.
  3. A virtual horizon that is available in live view and in the viewfinder. It is very convenient to program the virtual horizon function for display in the optical viewfinder, for example, using the AE-L / AF-L button.
  4. Programmable Depth of Field View Button
  5. Ability to work with manual optics. You can set the parameters of 10 manual lenses. The photographer who provided me with a camera for review, photographs without problems on the Helios-81N manual lens. More details in the section AI-S и Soviet optics. Of course, Nikon D800 has a built-in focus motor.
  6. Ability to customize everything you can when viewing images
  7. The camera has an interesting 25MP crop mode 1.2x, and the standard 15.3MP crop mode 1.5x
  8. The camera has a USB 3.0 interface
  9. Nikon D800 has a matrix cleaning system. Cleaning can be turned off, or you can turn it on to turn the camera on or off.
  10. Camera Nikon D800 has the ability to fine tune the focus (alignment) for different lenses. This is a very useful feature. In this review, all pictures were taken with the lens Tamron 90mm F2.8SP, my copy requires a focus adjustment of '-15'. Also, you can see sample photos from Nikon D800 without processing in the review Lens Volna-3 and in review Tokina AT-X 235 PRO 20-35mm 1: 2.8.

Personal experience:

When shooting in HDR, the camera does not lower the mirror, but takes all the pictures at once with the mirror raised, while in the camera, besides the shutter curtains, something else is noisy, it seemed unusual to me. Personally, I have a camera Nikon D800 liked it. You should not be afraid or rely on a huge number of megapixels. 36MP are not as strong as they are written about. In general, Nikon D800 is a camera that you can write about endlessly. I practically did not feel the difference when working with Nikon D800 и Nikon D700, only the photos are slightly different. Difference between Nikon D800 и Nikon D700 described in D700 review. If I had a choice between the Nikon D700 and D800, I would not have decided what to purchase, but I would be inclined to the D800 because of the great processing capabilities.

  • Captain Nemo

We buy everything "ZENIT" - they do not need to be discussed, worried about AF, DD, and all kinds of nonsense, as well as for the money spent. If in film Nikons, Kenons, etc. there was real reliability, design and Japanese quality, then in digital there is no longer such greatness. All this is bullshit, all devices have a huge potential in software, but it is also revealed in software. The operation of the shutter, AF, DD - it's all configurable, the FF matrix is one, only it is either degraded by software, adjusting it to the model, or it is improved (Mp), but the AF and the shutter are driven, and in another model it is the other way around. This is Globalization (no potency - get out of the market). It is possible to improve the sensors, invent new cases (yes, even made of gold), but if the “brain” is not finalized, then our brains will already float to us. The coolest linkage of all is in D3 and D4, in them. The rest are good, but from the evil one ... And the article is good. And the judgments are sensible.

  • Good man

Arkady. Please make an addition to the article.
I have been the owner of the D800 for half a year already and only today I learned one good news.
I decided to share it with everyone who has this camera. They will be pleasantly surprised.
The fact is that by default, when you change the crop mode in the camera to 5: 4 or crop 1.5 or crop 1.2, the future frame in the viewfinder is simply outlined with a thin black frame, due to which it is difficult to imagine the future frame and frame it accurately. So, in the D800 if you go to the "PENCIL" menu and then to the "A5" item and set the value "OFF" (that is, turn off the illumination of the AF points in the viewfinder), then after this procedure the crop modes in the viewfinder will be masked by the black fill of the viewfinder, and only the crop area of the frame will be visible, due to which framing will be facilitated at times, and becomes similar to top-end camera models such as D3, D3s, D4, D4s. It would be interesting to check if there is such a feature in the D700 and other oldies? And in the D7100 it will probably be the same.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I already wrote about this somewhere, it is not so important. And don't do the cross-posts of your know-how throughout the site.

    • toperr

      At 810 do not work

  • Dmitry VK

I just don't understand the opinion about “soapiness”, “micro-lubrication”, etc.… I have a d5100 with 16 megapixels, the d800 has a matrix area 2.25 times larger. Accordingly, the d5100 fits into a full frame 800 times more megapixels of about the same size as the d2.25. Total 36 megapixels. It turns out that d5100 does not wash with anyone, and d800 is all a crash - “pixels are fighting for a place in the sun”? The main drawback of any camera is the place where the photographer's hands grow .... well, or tell me before you finally tuned in to d800)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is known in comparison, for example, shoot on the D40 with 6mp and D5100 with 16mp, everything will fall into place. Pros very quickly notice every little thing.

  • Gregory

    Yes, the price bites (

  • Stanislas

Hello everyone! Is Arkady true that the Nikon D800 parties that started serial numbers from 600 to 605 had an auto focus marriage?

    • Jury

The marriage had, I saw on the number, which starts at 201

  • Alexander

Good time of day. I have this situation: I want to take a camera and there are such options: used d600, d700, d800 or the new d7200. Confuses the high cost of full-frame good optics, and by d7200 the body would take sigma 17-50 2,8 and think about further replenishment. Can you give any recommendations?

    • Jury

In my opinion, in terms of economy on glass, crop wins mainly on inexpensive aperture zoom, which is more on crop. Although in this segment for the full frame there are good and affordable options, for example, Tamron 28-75 f / 2.8, Nikon 24-85, old 28-105 f / 3.5-4.5d).

I would recommend looking for used D610.

    • Lynx

      From the situation and goals.
For amateur photography of portraits and miscellaneous, as well as making money at weddings, love stories and other things - then d610 / 600.
For reporting, fast frames d7200. With such a tough choice, I personally would like the d7200.

    • Sergei

Due to the small pixel, the D7200 matrix is more demanding on optics than the D800, and even film D glass behave well on the D600-750. So it’s more profitable to take a full frame, since it also wins due to its larger matrix in terms of plasticity and noise.

      • Alexander

I took a Canon 5D mkII and did not regret it. Thank you all for your advice. The Canon 5D mkII and Canon 50mm 1,4 came out as the Nikon D7200 18-105.

  • Michael

for portraits which is better? 750 or 800? 600/610?
was 700, but her colors are terrible ((

    • Sergei

if you shoot in RAW then the color is good both on the D800 and on the D610, I didn’t have 750.
For a portrait, it’s more convenient for me to use the D800, since it has wider spaced autofocus sensors, which is more convenient when composing a frame for portraiture. In addition, the D800 has a shutter speed of 1/8000, which is often critical in the presence of f1.4 glasses. The D800 is larger and heavier and better lies in a large male hand. The D800 and D750 have a better metering sensor and more precisely white balance.

    • Alexey

Kenon is better for portraits, get the right skin without dancing with a tambourine.
For landscapes and subjects D8xx is magnificent.

if all the same Nikon, definitely D810.
D750 does not have a very necessary 1/8000
D600 / D610, among other things, have an unimportant AF
D800 (D800e) has a number of problems with color and design that are partially resolved in the D810.

  • Taras

    Hello!
I am a subject photographer by profession, I love macro, for the soul I shoot when it comes to plein air and portraits. I use this camera since its release. So this is an excellent studio car with which it is comfortable in any conditions, it pleased me from the first days. but! Given the availability of suitable optics for these conditions! Do not expect anything good from bad glass on FF. By the way, I myself use Tamron 90, only a new one with a stub, a great alternative to the Nikon analogue for both macro and portrait. The only thing I regretted was that I did not take 800E, without a moire filter, I will take 810 there it is no longer there. But it is only then that maximum detail and sharpness are important to me in my work, for example, for shooting small gems. In other cases, no one will see the difference. Everything that concerns idle rasings about a large number of MPs and soaps is simply ridiculous to read. I take macro shots and get great shots. There are cameras and 50 and more mp and this is not the limit. Simply, everything should be used correctly in the case. The D800 camera is more studio and is designed for max resolution, we need a lot of reporting, we take Kenon 5d Mark 3 and we are happy. She and the wedding people take more because at the wedding the reportage is higher than the roof.
If there is a choice between crop and FF, as the person asked above, then everything depends on your finances. Taking bu FF and then scrubbing money for expensive lenses or putting cheap ones is a utopia. It’s better to buy a crop of the same 7200 a couple of good and not expensive glasses, my advice is 50mm and 70-300vr, and that's enough for all cases if you are not a pro and you do not make money on it.
Well, to sum up, the d800 is a wonderful device that in good hands will do the maximum, but if you have no hands or desire ... another hobby can help :) good luck to everyone!

A small example of a DD camera. Underexposed original link http://www.ex.ua/339393493603 this photo

    • Lynx

umm .. you definitely didn’t confuse DD with anything else?

      • Jury

        I do not, and you?

        • Alexey

Lynx rarely reads what they write, he posts something on his own wave))))
and this time, apparently, he did not understand the difference between "small example" and "small DD"))))))))))))))

        • Lynx

          Well, OK.
I was just curious how underexposure is related to dd.

  • Vasily the Almighty

say smartly what to take d800 (shot 5), ideally - for 000 bucks or d1000 new - 750 bucks
I plan for my wife - shooting weddings, gardens, schools

    • Yarkiya

Wow, it’s a sin to ask questions with your nickname, we should ask this.

Well, if “smart”, then 800 is more suitable for the studio, and 750 is good in the field. In general, you don't care if 800 for $ 1000 and in good condition, as they say, give two! Do not forget to just take care of good glass.

    • Alexey

Shot on the D800 twisted in 5 minutes prog from an Internet. it was 150K, 5 min of work and voila-5K!
If there are real 5K and there are no problems with the carcass, I would definitely buy the D800.
D750- castrated by Nikon to an amateur level.

if there is no normal optics under D800, do downsize up to 24MP and that's it.
for the house for the family everything will be sharp and beautiful.

  • Vasily the Almighty

took d800 - really even for the wind! sooo satisfied - optics are nikory 24-70, 85 1.4 ji, sigma 35 art
Alexei, and how is the program called by which they reset (supposedly) the counter in 5 minutes?

    • Oleg

So I wonder what kind of programulina is so interesting?

  • Vasily the Almighty

750 (among other things) has sooo much marriage

  • Vasily the Almighty

who is smarter than me - tell me about d800
on d610 I hammered my wife and memory U1 -U2 parameters of work without flash and with flash (where I drove all the necessary settings) - in case of complete stupidity - you could turn the wheel back and forth and return to the settings I recorded
but I don’t understand shit for d800 - if I wrote down the settings to the bank - yes, they are saved when choosing, but at least change the aperture and the last setting with the changed aperture remains in memory
On d800 there is no alternative to U1-U2 to constantly keep in mind?
    thanks in advance

    • Dmitry K

I will take the liberty (otherwise they set the bar - who is smarter). The principle of operation of banks is not the same as in U1 U2. The banks save shooting mode settings (folder, file name, file quality and size, distortion and vignetting control) and custom settings (assignment of additional buttons, display brightness, ISO and exposure steps). But the settings of the exposure pair are not saved and are always the same as you left them from the last time. The only thing is that in all 4 exposure metering modes (PSAM) they are memorized separately - if you left 1.4 in the aperture priority and the shutter speed is one hundredth, then when you switch to Manual, you will see the one that you left from the last time

      • Michael

In banks, it is impossible to default save both shooting mode parameters and user settings. If you select another parameter through the menu (redefine the button), then the bank with which you work will immediately rewrite the value to a new one. So in addition to the expopair, the white balance will be the last, and the folder, and the work of the car, etc.

        • Dmitry K

Well, yes, they don't nail down tightly. It's just that they work with an expo-pair more often than change the storage folder. And since these banks are a weak consolation, it is easier to twist everything at once than to remember what is how. In this regard, U1 U2 or Canon's C1 C2 is more convenient. But if they are shooting in equal terms, then the white balance and improvement of the side. You don't have to rename the folders to avoid confusion. In the bottom line there is only an exposure coupler, auto on / off and maximum exposure. But if you shoot in a zhipeg, then there is darkness - in order to switch from portrait to landscape, you also need to twist the color control and white balance.

          • Michael

Well, I had a question about choosing the number of focus points, tracking mode, flash mode, autofocus backlight. Not a little even without JPEG

            • Dmitry K

I agree. Dragging then Ken already swore at all this. Full memorization of settings is more convenient

    • Michael

There is only an alternative to write the state of the banks to flash. In the camera settings (which are with a key) there is an item to save / load parameters. Here he can remember the current state of the fotik (with all banks) and from there you can load your "default" values.

  • Vasily the Almighty

    Dmitry K
thanks for the enlightenment, otherwise I thought that I was doing something wrong ...
    sorry that not like d610 (U1 - U2)
In general, I like the ph!

    • Dmitry K

Well, Ken Rockwell swore at the lack of normal user modes. In kenon here is in all carcasses.

I have a D800, in which there are only two languages - English and Japanese, in the internet they write that this is FA for the domestic Japanese market and it is impossible to add languages, even in the service. Re-flashing does not exactly add languages - I tried it, but it is possible to do it with the service software by executing the initial settings command, with the selected English. language. True, all the settings went off (how deeply they went, until I figured it out :)), but all languages appeared.

      AND???

Can I describe the procedure with languages in more detail? And then I have the same chip with two languages on the d7100. English truth is not annoying at all, rather the opposite, but still I would like to expand opportunities.

Nikon has a service software (for each camera). If you connect them to the camera, you can set up autofocus, make a focus correction, remap dead pixels (this is what I did with the D800), having previously made a backup of nvram and flash :). Today I learned that it is possible to turn on languages, although I have met messages everywhere on the Internet that this is impossible. If you want to experiment - there is software for the D7100, however, I did not work with it, but the initial settings button is there :). To connect the D800 to its software, I had to find the very first firmware on the Internet (Nikon's website only has the latest one), reflash the camera with it, only after that the server started working. software with a camera.

    Good hello!
Is USB OTG function supported? Can I connect a smartphone-tablet? Use it as a monitor? I looked here, but did not fully understand ...
    http://www.emptybottleevenings.com/how-to-control-your-dslr-with-an-android-tablet-pt-1/
Can the Guru tell you more?
I’m sure that it’s not interesting to me alone today :-)
    Thank you.

    • BB

Your smartphone / tablet must support the OTG function, you need to install the “DslrDashboard” application, and your camera must be in the list of this application (the application must directly support your camera model). Well, you can work, as I understand it, only in LV mode (perhaps I'm wrong, I connected the camera only to a PC, and then just to check this possibility)

      • Vyacheslav

I understood. Thank you so much, I'll try - unsubscribe how it went. Tomorrow I will buy a cable ...

  • Yaroslav

Good day, guys! I ask you to help me. I am semi-professional in photography. Having in my arsenal D7000 + 17-50 2.8 (wonderful) +85 1.8G. Everything would be fine, but noises at d7000 ... .. Excuse me ... It is impossible to shoot at 400 iso even. A couple of clients almost let me down the toilet, especially for shooting in a dark church. Two things worries me: d700 is enough for me to get Noisy photos at least 800iso, and second, what about DD? Already burnt-out places on the park hesitated

    • anonym

Yaroslav, look towards d610, it will be newer than seven hundred, DD and ISO are better. You won’t get used to ergonomics after the D7000, because the controls are similar.

  • Christina

Good afternoon, tell me please, I want to switch to ff, I’m hesitating that it’s better to take a D800, but the mileage is already 300 thousand for $ 900, or the new D610 is better.

    • Jury

Of these two options, the new D610 is definitely better, or find a used D800 with low mileage for 1,4-1,5 to $

    • Pastor

If you are not sure that you need a d800, then you do not need to buy it. This is a very specific tool, while the d610 is a universal amateur DSLR. Mileage of 300 thousand even for d800 is already borderline. It can break at any time, and replacing the shutter will cost a lot. By the way, in addition to the shutter for such a run, something else could have broken, so don't risk it. If you have money for a new d610, take it. According to the working ISO, it is no worse for sure, there are no full settings, the protection is also good. Plus, the weight of the raves is less and the dimensions of the carcass itself are smaller.

      • Elmira

Please tell me for shooting children outdoors 610 will be convenient for autofocus. They write that the points are collected in one heap. Thanks.

        • anonym

only D5 can handle children more or less ...

          • Pokekmon

            The D500 is enough.
            But seriously, then the D700 / D3.

            • Elmira

Even 810 will be hard to handle? ((

              • anonym

Even the D850, with the same AF sensor as the D5, is more screwed up when shooting moving subjects. Nobody would buy top-end DSLRs if everything was OK on the cheaper ones.

If a child is placed in a confined environment (for example, a playground) and he will play there with enthusiasm, almost any device can handle it. The main thing is to make more takes. And if the child is running around like crazy and refuses to take off in addition, none of them will help.

D810 is perhaps the most balanced device. It is worth choosing it (with fixes, of course). And even big fast flash drives and big hard drives for archiving.

        • Peter Sh.

Elmira, everything is in order, the D610 will be convenient.

          • Elmira

            Thank you.

        • Pastor

It is unlikely that it is still relevant, but I will still answer. Personally, I almost never use AF tracking. And any other focus points other than the center one too. Therefore, my experience of shooting relying on the autofocus of all points is small. When it is imperative to have tracking autofocus, even the initial d3300 type cameras do not let me down. This is in case the light is normal. And in nature there is usually enough light, so the d610 will cope with the task without problems. If you shoot indoors where there is little light or outdoors late at night / at night, then even d5 can work, if you believe the reviews. I tried q4 myself - everything is great, but miracles do not happen, and where the speed of the object is too high and the movement is chaotic, as well as where there is little light or it flickers, autofocus does not always cope.

          • Elmira

Thanks. I now have a Nikon 7100, where I always shoot in S-S mode, that is, I will fix the focus point, for example, by the golden ratio in the eye area, and I will fix the top of the joystick and take all the sharp pictures. There are doubts as far as at 610 I can fix the focus point closer to the right edge, everywhere they write that the points are collected in the center. When are they collected when tracked? this is one doubt, and so there is 85 mm 1.4D and I don’t want to leave with Nikon. Thanks.

            • Pastor

              This picture should help you:

              • Elmira

Thank you, it’s very sad, perhaps I won’t risk buying a camera with such a coating (

              • Elmira

A question was born) tell me this means that now that the subject is focused on Nikon 610, then it should be located only in the center where are the points in the figure? Or can we focus and compose the frame so that the golden ratio rule is respected?

              • anonym

Yes Yes. Exactly. Like on the D40.

              • KalekseyG

Yes Yes exactly. How on. D40

              • Peter Sh.

In addition, the frame still needs to be trimmed from the edges. The format is too narrow for printing.

  • Kirill Yankovsky

I’ll duplicate here my detailed review with Club-Photo.ru on this camera:

    Purchase Time: August 2016
Strengths: 1) Resolution and micro-detail, the best I've seen. Ability to shoot in TIFF without loss of color
    2) Rubber RAWS allow you to stretch the picture where Kenons or budget crops already have a spoiled frame and a terrible mess of pixels. In other words, the D800 forgives gross mistakes in exposure both in highlights and shadows. A picture can be dragged over shadows even in jpeg!
    3) Exceptional clarity and sharpness of the picture at low ISO (up to 400), then comes a fine grainy noise.
    4) The richest functionality - a bunch of settings. All that is missing is D600-610-7100. Multiple framing modes with viewfinder dimming, often used with telephoto lenses.
    5) Advanced video - a very cool function to smoothly control the aperture with two buttons under the mount - very convenient and simple. + Video quality is much better than D7100
    6) Flawless autofocus operation
    7) The camera works very quickly, clearly, without blunts, brakes and glitches. Perhaps due to fresh firmware. All that is written about the brakes and glitches is nonsense, or a raw camera not flashed + a slow memory card.
    8) Ergonomics is impeccable - there is protection against dust and moisture. QUALITY THING
Weaknesses: 1) White balance! Irresponsible behaves from a sharp change in lighting, from the type of optics - if the old lens is yellow, then the camera will always distort the BB. A lot of fuss in the editor with color
    2) Quickly consumes battery - critical for commerce and reporters. Not my case, it is tolerable.
    3) Weight - muscle discomfort from holding the camera for a long time + it is big for my hand.
    4) Weak performance at high and extreme ISO. The advantage over the latest crop is not very noticeable (the difference is that it is a full frame and the detail does not degrade to 3200). Maximum honestly working ISO 1600-2000. For amateur astrophoto it is permissible to work on 6400-12800
    Used analogues: 5200, 7100
Commentary: White balance! This is the main failure of this camera. He lives his own life - and often unexpectedly gives out a color that is simply INAUTABLE !!! For example - just a clear day, AUTO mode, light backlight, and EVERYTHING at home on a computer, the sky is purple-pink and everything else with a dirty green tint. It is required to constantly manually enter the A2-M1 correction for adequate autumn tones, or vice versa B1-2-3-M1 for winter or conditions where yellowing optics enters the BB camera into a stupor. For each profile to do this is awesome !! And for static scenes, it's better to adjust the BB manually. On the D7100, I did not rule the BB at all - rarely and only a shade to taste. In the D800, the color distortion is just stupid - it never shoots the way we see the world with our eyes. Almost does not distinguish between subtle shades of green, there are questions with the difference between red and pink. Confuses yellow and green. In natural colors, the grass always adds some kind of dirty shade. I bought the camera from my hands with a mileage of 8000 after the firmware in the service, according to the seller. Indeed, the device works very quickly and accurately with any optics, but the problem with wrong colors in AUTO remains. I rate it 5-. All the same, this is a landscape studio machine, and you can make any color. And there is no need to demand from her an excellent result at high ISO - for this you need to take DF, D3, D4. And the D800 is the best camera for photographers, prof. landscape painters or architecture. It is permissible to shoot a simple reportage, sports, animals. But in order to exclude soap, shake and micro-lubricants 36MP matrix ATTENTION! - Shoot in jpeg or tiff in size M, or better S (10MP) - then the picture is perfect pixel by pixel and clean at the longest focus. I shoot like this on the focal lengths up to 10000 from hands without shaking without raising the ISO above 1600. Moreover, not all optics allow full-size RAVs with D800. I shoot in RAV only landscape with a tripod or in situations where there will be difficult lighting, or for astrophotography. The camera is not for an amateur and even more so for a beginner - it spreads its legs only in the hands of a pro, and then not immediately - you need to be ready for this when buying this camera. But if you make friends with her, then no Darkness Two Three will even be worthy of lying nearby in the agony of envy of the Kenonists.

  • Kirill Yankovsky

I apologize for the mistakes in the text (focal up to 1000mm)

  • Jurassic

Well, time has put everything in its place - d800 - perhaps the most unsuccessful camera in Nikon.

  • Alexey

Well, why is it unsuccessful? It’s a great camera. Do you compare her with hers?
