Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 review

Nikon D800 is professional full-frame digital SLR camera. On the Internet, you can find many entries about the fact that the Nikon D800 is an amateur or semi-professional camera from Nikon. This is due to the fact that Nikon's professional cameras can be conditionally divided into flagship professional ones (Nikon D3x, D3s, D4 etc.) and just professional (Nikon D300, D700, D800). Personally, I am of the opinion that the Nikon D800 is a professional camera.

The Nikon D800 camera is made in good tone, the entire body of the camera is made of magnesium alloy, the handles and control dials are rubberized. The camera has weather and dust protection. True, protection against weather conditions will be complete if appropriate lenses are used.

Full frame

Nikon D800 is a full-frame camera, of its kind, Nikon for 2012 has only 2 cameras of this level - this is Nikon D700 and Nikon D800E. Nikon D600 - this is already an amateur full frame. Nikon D800 has on board a whopping 36.8 MP (CMOS sensor). Responsible for image formation 36.3MP, which allow you to take photos 7360 by 4912 pixels... As of Fall 2012, the D800 is the narrowest format camera with the highest pixel count. Have Nikon D800 14 times more MP than the first Nikon D1, Nikon D1h. Of course, it is not the quantity of MP that matters, but the quality. And the quality of these almost 40MP is determined by the dynamic range and the level of noise, color reproduction, etc.

Dynamic range

In addition to being the most 'megapixel' camera, the D800 also has biggest DD (dynamic range) among all digital SLR cameras... The camera attracts most of all with its huge DD. Nikon D800 is a good contender for the victory of numbers over film, which also has a very large photo latitude.

Shooting speed

It's funny, but the shooting speed of the Nikon D800 is maximum 4 frames per second... In fact, 4k / s is the declared speed, the camera itself shoots a little faster, some argue that the speed is 4.6k \ s. Even simpler cropped cameras like Nikon D7000, D90 can click faster for the brand new Nikon D800. High speed shooting is very rare. For my tasks, for example, low shooting speed does not play any role. What, after a long time shooting at Nikon D700, with its 5 fps, I felt very weak the difference between 4 fps on the Nikon D800. By the way, in DX mode, the camera can operate at a speed of 5 k / s, and a little subtlety, if you use MB-D12, then the speed in DX mode will increase to 6 k / s.

Buffer

The buffer is the second very important metric for camera performance. Nikon D800 can accommodate

  • 16 RAW (NEF) images when all additional functions are disabled, such as noise reduction at high ISO, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds, ADL, automatic ISO and vignetting control. When it changes compression level and color depth settings, the number of pictures that are placed in the buffer does not change. Symbolic, but in the line Nikon D100 – Nikon D800E the largest buffer remains with the old woman Nikon D200 with her 21 RAWs.
  • 22 JPEG L Fine, 37 JPEG L Norm, 56 images with JPEG L Basic and with all additional functions turned off, and in JPEG image quality priority mode.
  • 15 TIFF images
  • if you enable all additional features, then frame buffer becomes equal to 12 pictures in RAW, 14 TIFF, 21 JPEG.

If you use the maximum that the camera is capable of and shoot in RAW, then continuous shooting with a slow memory card should be enough for at least 4 seconds at 4 frames per second. This is a good indicator, however, this is not enough for serious shooting of dynamic scenes.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Example photo on Nikon D800

Nikon D800 has very heavy files, so if you shoot in RAW with 14-bit color depth and without compression, then only 32 pictures can fit on a 400GB memory card. Files weigh:

  • 75MB in RAW format no compression, 14bit. On the Internet there are a lot of rumors about the size of the pictures, the numbers may differ, since with different compression and color depth The source file may weigh differently.
  • 8-30MB in JPEG L photomat, quality priority.

If we talk about performance, then in my opinion performance label of all CZK NIKON, Nikon D800 in the fall of 2012 holds second place, which already says a lot. Most likely, due to the large file sizes, two memory card slots are provided.

Interesting:

  1. They say that in order to unleash the potential of the Nikon D800 you need lenses with huge resolution, that is, with great sharpness. This turned out to be not entirely true. The sharpness does not change so much when using the same lens, for example, on Nikon D700 with huge pixels and D800 with small pixels. Well, if the sharpness is low, then you can set the sharpness in Picture Control or in Nikon View NX.
  2. Having bought Nikon D800 you can immediately get a good result in the photo. This is also a myth. The camera only helps to take a picture, the photographer and other photo equipment are responsible for everything else. It is important how to take pictures. No need to think that a good DD and a huge number of megapixels will somehow seriously help improve your photos.
  3. Due to the large number of MPs, the effect of stirring affects more than on cameras with fewer MPs. Roughly speaking, take pictures with hand on the Nikon D800 is more difficult, for example, than on Nikon D700, since a large number of MPs are more sensitive to microshifts. I had to take test shots on a 90mm lens with shutter speed no more than 1 \ 200s to completely eliminate the effect of movement. In this case, the amount of MP played a cruel joke
  4. A large number of MPs require a powerful computer and a lot of free disk space. My Core Quad can barely handle heavy RAW files when working in Lightroom.
  5. Nikon D800 has a very large clean viewfinder that covers 100% of the frame, this is not enough in Nikon D700.
  6. Nikon D800E - this is a complete copy of Nikon D800, which was simply removed anti-aliasing filter (in fact, everything is a little more complicated there), thereby increasing the sharpness of the resulting image and at the same time, a greater risk of getting a moire effect on photos and videos.

Video on Nikon D800

The camera can take Full HD video, 1920 * 1080 30k \ s. In P, A, S, M modes, manual and automatic ISO control and correction are possible. exposure. You can select different video quality options. You can also choose which memory card the video will be recorded on. The sound is only mono. The camera has an HDMI output and the ability to connect an external microphone. The main feature of the Nikon D800 is aperture control while shooting a video. That is, finally, Nikon has implemented the ability to fully control the main parameters when shooting video. For example, Nikon D7000, D600, D3s, Nikon D7100 They don’t know how to control the iris while shooting video.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Display

The camera's display is huge, with a diagonal of 3.2 inches. But the Nikon D800 uses the same 921,000 points as in older displays. Nikon D700, D300, D300s, D7000, D90, D3 etc. The display is excellent, it is very pleasant to work with it.

ISO

50 ('Lo1') - 25,600 ('Hi2'). Range without extension is 100-6400. Almost the same as the Nikon D700. The noise level of the Nikon D800 is slightly better for the Nikon D700. ISO 50. very useful when using high-aperture optics in good lighting conditions. You can read about the noise level of all full-frame Nikon cameras in my article 'Image quality of all Nikon FX cameras'.

Example photo on Nikon D800

Focus system

Camera Nikon D800 uses 51 point focusing system with 15 cross-shaped points Multi-CAM3500FX. The 15 center focus points can be operated from F / 5.6 to F / 8.0 and 11 points can be operated from F / 8.0. Operation at high F-numbers is very important when using lenses with teleconverters. It’s a pity that in addition to refining the focus on small apertures, the camera uses a rather old Multi-CAM3500FX, which has not been replaced with anything new. All Nikon full-frame cameras use the Multi-CAM3500FX except the camera Nikon D600... All Nikon D800 focus points are located in the DX area of the image. You can read more about focusing systems in my article 'Focus systems on Nikon cameras'. Nikon D800 It has different focus modes and methods: 3D-tracking, automatic, single-point, etc. The same updated focus module uses Nikon D4.

Two memory cards

Nikon D800 can use two types of memory cards CF (UDMA) and SD (SDHC, SDXC, UHS-I) cards. It would be nice if both slots were for CF cards. You can set up shooting differently using two memory cards. Video is always recorded on only one card, which can be selected in the camera menu.

Measurement exposure

Metering system exposure based on 3D color matrix metering with 91.000 points. You need to get used to the work of the exposure meter of each camera. The exposure meter works quite accurately. exposure almost always what i expected. About measuring systems exposure you can read all Nikon cameras in my article 'Nikon Camera Metering Methods'.

Flash

Nikon D800 Flash supports Creative Lighting Nikon CLS and can remotely control other flashes in TTL auto mode. This is a very useful thing. Minimum excerpt Built-in flash sync is 1 \ 320s. When using external flash units, the Nikon D800 supports high speed sync and can work with flash with shutter speeds up to 1 \ 8000s.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

Battery

The camera uses a new lithium-ion battery EN-EL15. The battery lasts more than 1500 shots, the number of shots on a single charge is highly dependent on the shooting method, lens, etc. The battery is good enough, it's a pity you can’t use it with previous cameras. For example, batteries from my D700, D200, D80, D90 were completely the same.

Sample photo on Nikon D800

The camera has a million additional useful settings.

  1. Function HDR. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketingwhich is very convenient.
  2. Multiple exposure. The function can be programmed to be activated via the button bracketing.
  3. A virtual horizon that is available in live view and in the viewfinder. It is very convenient to program the virtual horizon function for display in the optical viewfinder, for example, using the AE-L / AF-L button.
  4. Programmable Depth of Field View Button
  5. Ability to work with manual optics. You can set the parameters of 10 manual lenses. The photographer who provided me with a camera for review, photographs without problems on the Helios-81N manual lens. More details in the section AI-S и Soviet optics. Of course, Nikon D800 has a built-in focus motor.
  6. Ability to customize everything you can when viewing images
  7. The camera has an interesting 25MP crop mode 1.2x, and the standard 15.3MP crop mode 1.5x
  8. The camera has a USB 3.0 interface
  9. Nikon D800 has a matrix cleaning system. Cleaning can be turned off, or you can turn it on to turn the camera on or off.
  10. Camera Nikon D800 has the ability to fine tune the focus (alignment) for different lenses. This is a very useful feature. In this review, all pictures were taken with the lens Tamron 90mm F2.8SP, my copy requires a focus adjustment of '-15'. Also, you can see sample photos from Nikon D800 without processing in the review Lens Volna-3 and in review Tokina AT-X 235 PRO 20-35mm 1: 2.8.

Personal experience:

When shooting in HDR, the camera does not lower the mirror, but takes all the pictures at once with the mirror raised, while in the camera, besides the shutter curtains, something else is noisy, it seemed unusual to me. Personally, I have a camera Nikon D800 liked it. You should not be afraid or rely on a huge number of megapixels. 36MP are not as strong as they are written about. In general, Nikon D800 is a camera that you can write about endlessly. I practically did not feel the difference when working with Nikon D800 и Nikon D700, only the photos are slightly different. Difference between Nikon D800 и Nikon D700 described in D700 review. If I had a choice between the Nikon D700 and D800, I would not have decided what to purchase, but I would be inclined to the D800 because of the great processing capabilities.

I recently photographed a wedding for NEW KHOKHLU - it worked well, so he printed a bunch of A3 and A2 posters from my files - I went looking around - SUPER QUALITY !!!

  • Jury

with careful consideration of the photos, the D-800 detailing allows you to consider such small details as dust on furniture and the texture of fabrics on clothes.

  • Alexey

Thank you very much Arkady for the clear and comprehensive review of the D800. What do you suggest taking the Nikkor AF-S 800 mm F / 105 G IF-ED VR or Nikkor AF-S 2.8 mm F / 85 G to the D1.8?

  • anonym

ordered d 800 (official guarantee) ... on Wednesday they will bring ... Please tell me what to look for when checking this fotik ... They say a lot of defects are found in some copies .. for example .. the focus points of the left side do not hit the target, the monitor turns green, generally freezes Neither of this nor of this .. Batteries in which the 9th character of the serial E or F needs to be changed This is how they change the jam from Nikon for free ...

  • Basil

Arkady, what about Strelmakh's review of disgusting skin tones on the D800? From your experience - is there a skin tone problem in d800?

  • Alexander

Watch test video on Nikon D800 and Canon 5D mark ||| you can here http://stdu.narod.ru/can_nik.html comparison: balance, low light noise, RAW and Jpeg modes, dd, autofocus. I myself cannot choose yet, although Nikon D800 is the best in dd and RAW and Jpeg shooting. there is a small test Canon 5D mark ||| and 5D mark || in video mode stdu.narod.ru, where the latter has a lower sensitivity at high ISO.

  • VASYL

Hello everybody ! how I bought d800 - all at work, I have already repulsed the carcass - I have received orders for the whole summer (very tight schedule) are recorded for the fall ... so things will go before the height of the wedding season I will return all my money
and about Strelmakh - the intrigues of enemies are - an overview - a scribble painted to order - he is a bastard

  • Vladimir

Hey. For some reason, on the D800 in the same conditions, shutter speed is needed more than on the D5100. Who knows why?

  • Vyacheslav

My dear, you are my competent photo masters and theorists! If you believe all the reviews, you can’t buy anything! And I want such a device to shoot n / tennis in a poorly lit gym. This is a problem with light in Krasnoyarsk. I want to have a shutter speed of 1/500 sec. or, as a last resort, 1/350 sec. But better, of course, 1/500 sec. If anyone shoots tennis properly, give advice! I am sincerely grateful! I plan Nikon 70-200F / 2,8G ED AF-S VRII Zoom lenses and Nikon 17-55mmF / 2,8G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom. Am I Right? Vyacheslav Pavlovich, Krasnoyarsk.

    • Nicholas

Good day, Vyacheslav. Answering your question about choosing a camera and optics, I can tell you from my own experience. At the moment, D700,70-200,85mm 1,4. In rhythmic gymnastics, it’s quite 700, and 70-200, shutter speed is 600, aperture of 2,8-3,2, of course, light is important. On the camera, the optimal choice is D3s, since on a used model the price tag has dropped below 80.000 rubles, or TOP-D4. Thank you. Have a good purchase).

  • Alexander

Arkady, about shooting through the LV in the D800.

Excerpt from the practical instruction manual (nikonsupport.eu/europe/Manuals/D800 Tech Guide / D800_TechnicalGuide_Ru.pdf):
    "Lesson 2. Using Live View
Benefits of Live View Shooting - 1.Reduced blur by raising the mirror
    before shooting. ”

    Tell me please:
    1. Why can’t I get the same sharpness when shooting through the viewfinder and LV at very short shutter speeds (for example, 1/1000)?
    2. Do you have a difference in sharpness when shooting 1 scene through the viewfinder and LV?

    Thank you!
    Sincerely, Alexander.

  • Alexander

Tell me, time-lapse photography on the d800 is not possible with manual optics?

  • Andrei

Hello. I'd like to buy this camera, well, or the D600, I read about lenses that not all fit, I have 85mm1,4D, 70-300mm VR, sigma 18-55mm 2,8, crop 35mmG, I can pull the camera for the money, new lenses no. WILL I COME THESE OR NO.? I use D300 and D40, (I bought two more carcasses of museum D50 and D100, a bastard from this matrix). I rent mostly weddings, and a little in the studio. With 50 and 100 at weddings there is nothing to do, 40 (for 40 mostly drunk) also does not have time, 300 is already a resource, I live in the village with us. 5000 people so the budget is not spoiled.

    • Garik

      Do not listen to snobs.
What is, with a head for the first (and not only) time with a head!
If Sigma is not cropped, then it will roll.
A 85-ka will work fine. But 70-300 is a little narrow for a wedding, you have to take D300
with a staff member or 35th.
With regards to the famous 24-70. Yes. The thoroughbred glass, perhaps treated in the world for its own FR from zooms.
But I am a pragmatist, not a snob. Therefore, for D800 I chose 24-120 / 4 as more practical in terms of FR,
although the money allowed to take 24-70.

  • Vasyl

ADRYUHA BYARI ONLY D800 AND TAKE OR STEAL ON 24-70 AND EVERYTHING WILL BE A BEAM - THIS IS A GLASS FOR WEDDING FOR ALL CASES, AND YOUR MUSEUM Junk PREDAY FOR ANY HOLE

  • Anna

Hello. I am haunted by several questions to which I cannot find a satisfying answer. If you have time, I would really appreciate help! Soon I am going to Hong Kong and a serious camera purchase event is planned for the trip. Now I’m shooting on Nikon D90, I have been saving for a very long time and I am panicky afraid to make a bad choice that will complicate, but not facilitate the realization of all desires. In this regard, I have two questions:
    1. Maybe you have heard reviews about buying a camera in Hong Kong, is it really worth the effort? Could it be that the camera will be worse there or something will be wrong with it? It’s clear that you can run everywhere, but still.
    2. I aimed at the d800. I read the comments here and again hesitated. I want to take a step forward in both processing and quality, will all this give me 800? Or maybe there is another option?
    3. I have lenses native to 18-55, 55-200, 50 and 108 (old manual), will there be a difference in quality with these lenses at least for the first time (there is no way to buy optics right away) or am I with such optics difference then I don’t really see it?

For completeness of what I am doing and in what vein I’m shooting, here is a link to my site. http://anna-moss.blogspot.ru/

    • Garik

Purchase in Thailand - loss of warranty.
And the little thing is not cheap.
Those glasses that you have are not suitable for it.
No, they will shoot, but in crop mode (not the entire matrix)
and the quality of the pictures will not be "ice".
At least something like 70-300VR to it.

  • Vasyl

masses ana progolzhay shoot on d90 - anyway, if you take a d800 to it and you have to take good optics - otherwise the meaning is lost, and in Thailand I would not take the equipment - it is better to take a white one with an off-guarantee in Russia - it’s that daragaya! I took a d800 carcass - 2800 bucks and AF-S 24-70mm f / 2.8G glass 1800 bucks

  • Anna

Guys, not in Thailand, in Hong Kong)). They say there the quality is good and several times cheaper. The fact of the matter is that this expensive thing can be bought there for a piece of bucks cheaper, so I'm interested. With glass it's clear ... I have to think.

    • Garik

What's the difference! Ready to play roulette with fate - take it even in Honduras.
Warranty will not be all-one! Flies percent (God forbid), problems with AF,
But you never know what. As a result - getting on the money and considerable.
The camera is very stuffed, the assembly of such equipment is not tinkering with basins. Anything can be.

      • Garik

And I can not believe that the D800 carcass in Hong Kong will be
costs the equivalent of 1700 US dollars.
        I doubt it, AdnAka ...

    • Dashkin

Anna, it is quite possible to buy glasses in China. What, what, and if you take the optics and check them on the spot - they are certainly not of Japanese quality, but they are also of good quality. And the carcass ... listen to yourself! The inner “voice” will always give the correct answer. After D3100, I immediately switched to D800 and did not think about another device for a second! Now I can't imagine life without him. And when you take the same Mark3 in your hands, you feel like a really Chinese photo in your hands.

      • Anna

Thank you very much, Dasha. You helped me a lot.

  • Vasyl

Garik agrees with you completely from the Chinese to take a piece cheaper - it's not realistic - if only picking! But about the quality, I would have believed more about Thailand or Malaysia, but not Gankong - and what have the Chinese d800 riveted already? I have a carcass made in japan - I gave it 2800 and I don’t regret it and the guarantee is reliable and plows with a bang!

    • Garik

D800 is going ONLY in Japan.
      Intelligence reported to me. :)

      • Dashkin

Yes, but you know how much it is cheaper in Japan! It is unclear why with Russian firmware the device soars in price.

  • VASYL

Well, the masses are going to go to Honduras - there she is several times cheaper and of high quality!

  • Michael

    Great camera) very satisfied,)

  • Anna

Damn, you are funny people! What does Hong Kong have to do with "the Chinese began to rivet"? Do the Russians rivet Nikon? And in the Finns in the Finns? Everyone knows that in Japan, well, so doesn't the price depend on things like range and generally? Oranges at home are clearly cheaper than ours. So the Japanese are somehow in closer relations with the Chinese, isn't it logical that it will be cheaper there? Even considering the lack of firmware in Russian, the price should already be lower. I'm certainly not one hundred percent sure, but that would be logical.

  • Garik

For God's sake! Buy at least in Indigobraziya!
You would like to be warned against the risk associated with the loss of warranty on very complex equipment.
I sincerely hope that my warranty will be in the box for its entire period, but ...

  • anonym

Do not rely heavily on a guarantee, there are a million subtleties, according to which you will simply be denied a warranty (free) repair ...

  • Vasyl

Well, Mas Ana amused me! Oranges can definitely be cheaper, but d800 never! and where is the firmware! flag in your hands - bari in honduras - persuaded!

  • Garik

Availability of a warranty card -
not a panacea for all ills. Although with a normal competent approach
to the representatives of the SC, and you can "rock the right."
The D800 carcass is not the cheapest. So no guarantee
I would not recommend to a friend. And to an unfamiliar colleague - the same!

  • max

    Want to buy a D800 or D600?
Is it worth giving more money for the D800 ...?
    Thank you!

    • Garik

Cameras of a completely different class.
      How can they be compared?

    • Yes!

You can compare everything, I had the same situation. For applied photography, the D80 and Soviet lenses were and are enough for me. But the order "shot" and had to think. It was necessary to shoot a video, and the D800 won because the D600 with HDMI outputs a signal with 95% physical size. When recording to an external recorder, 5% is occupied by a green bar around the perimeter. You can pull - BUT you can't :-) The goal determines. D800 mega camera! Nikon F4 worked for a long time, finally a pleasant feeling of a “combat” device returned to my hands. I won't talk about quality, try it. Before buying, I went around all the photo shops 2-3 times and tried both the D600 and D800. The D800 is easy if you know what you are doing. This is the real feeling of film resolution, even more. By the way, I really like the D600, it would be possible to take the D800 to unload. You need to “love” the camera, then it will start giving you this ...
