The line of old manual lenses of class 4.5 / 300 from Nikon (Nippon Kogaku Japan) has many models:

  1. Nikon 300mm 1: 4.5 Nikkor-P Auto, the first 300mm lens for SLR cameras, before that Nikon had only rangefinder Nikon (Nippon Kogaku KK) RF Nikkor-Q 1: 4.5 f = 35cm manufactured in 1959. Nikkor-P means that 5 elements were used in the optical design of the lens, P stands for Penta - 'five'.
  2. Nippon kogaku japan Nikkor-h Auto 1: 4.5 f = 300mm, the second version, the prefix Nikkor-H means HEX - 'six', since 6 elements have already been used in the optical scheme. This lens is presented in this review.
  3. Nikkor 300 mm f / 4.5 NON AI and AI-S modifications. 6 elements in 5 groups
  4. Nikkor 300 mm f / 4.5 ED subsequent development of the line
  5. Nikkor 300 mm f / 4.5 IF-ED - 7 elements in 6 groups, one of the lightest and most functional 300mm lenses in the line. After this modification, the autofocus version of the Nikon 300mm f / 4 AF was launched.

This review presents the old Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1: 4.5 f = 300mm. This lens is Non AI (PRE AI) lens, installed on my copy Dandelion Lushnikova. In Ukraine, the sale and sticker of dandelions can be carried out without problems Andrei Kuryanov.

Attention:

Despite the fact that this is a native lens from Nikon, without additional alteration it can be used only on younger Nikon cameras of the type D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100 etc. The lens cannot be mounted on other cameras, or it will jam in the camera mount. This is due to the aperture ring on the lens, which interferes with installation. To be able to use this lens on other Nikon cameras, it’s enough to perform AI or AI-S conversion, which involves grinding off an extra protrusion on the lens, and sometimes adding additional material to transfer the aperture value to the camera.

My copy of Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm is just native Non-ai version, because I could not install it on my camera Nikon D700 и D80. How to use such old lenses on modern CZKs can be found in the AI-S section. I used Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm very easily on the camera Nikon D40, since my Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm is equipped with Lushnikov Dandelion, which allows you to work in automatic modes and gives confirmation of focusing with an audio signal.

This old Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm turned out to be a pretty decent lens. The first thing I noticed was its relatively light weight. Yes, the lens weighs over one kilogram, but because of its huge size in the hand, it seems very light. When used on a small camera Nikon D40 There are no problems with weight balance. The same 300mm Tair-3 monster seems much heavier for Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm. Nikkor-H F / 4.5 300mm It has tripod ring with two slots for a tripod for vertical and horizontal orientation of the camera.

Focusing

The focus ring is very wide, rotates approximately 90 degrees. The focus ring travel is tight and smooth. The fact that the focus ring has a small stroke is not scary, it helps to focus quickly enough. When focusing from infinity to MDF, the trunk of the lens travels approximately 3cm forward, the front element does not rotate. The lens has a not-so-comfortable minimum focusing distance of 4 meters; it is not always possible to take a subject in close-up.

Diaphragm

The lens has a 6-blade diaphragm. When the aperture is closed, the blades form a 'circular saw' up to F / 8.0. Due to the huge focal length, which affects the blur of the background, with closed apertures, bokeh can be left without pronounced nuts. The inscription on the lens 'Auto' does not mean that the lens is autofocusing, but only means that the iris control is automatic. The lens has a maximum aperture of F / 4.5, which is 1.55 times faster than the classic F / 5.6. The lens has integrated telescopic hood.

Image quality

The lens suffers a bit HA. Provides sufficient sharpness at F / 4.5, sharpening increases when the aperture is closed. At Nikkor-H F / 4.5 300mm good contrast and color reproduction. The lens normally tolerates backlight. Distortion and vignetting when used on a cropped camera are practically absent. The bokeh is pretty nice. In general, the lens showed normal image quality. All sample photos in this review are without processing. All shot on Nippon Kogaku Japan Nikkor-H Auto 1: 4.5 f = 300mm and Nikon D40. Reduced size to 2MP Q = 80% and imprinted data from EXIF. On a Nikon DX cropped camera, the lens has EGF 450mm, which makes it easy to take pictures of wildlife from afar.

You can find a few more modified photos from this lens in the section Walking with a good lens.

Personal experience

It is very interesting to use such a long 300mm prime lens. Always remember to keep your shutter speed in mind to get a sharp handheld photo. The lens is easy to operate, the only negative point is the huge minimum focusing distance of 4 meters and the problem of AI conversion. Aperture F / 4.5 is not such a good indicator, conventional zoom lenses like 70-300 4-5.6 (4.5-5.6) with image stabilizer are better suited for handheld shooting, since the stabilizer provides up to three compensation levels excerptsand the gain in aperture ratio of Nikkor-H 1: 4.5 f = 300mm before F / 5.6 is only 1.5 steps.

Great overview as always! Since my customer, who bought this lens, is a “junior” body, I didn’t do any modifications for Ai. By the way, on my old carcass for testing Dandelions and Nikon D70 lenses - it also does not require sawing, it works perfectly.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      We will know. I didn’t try it with D70, it’s a pity I couldn’t drive it on the D700.

  • Artur

    Thanks for the review.
And how was the dandelion programmed with the zoom, what focal point? And how correctly the lens + carcass + flash combination works.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This lens is without zoom. If the zoom, I program on the long end as a fixed lens. The flash works in TTL mode, but may be mistaken, because it does not know the distance to the object. In general, I try not to use dandelions.

  • Denis Shirinsky

Arkady, thanks for your reviews, I have been reading since the beginning of autumn and have learned a lot of interesting things :-) The question may not be entirely in essence, but still - how do you record the data on the image on manual optics? After all, EXIF says what is stitched into dandelion ... for example, on my Canon 600D, whichever manual lens was attached, the values will be 50 mm aperture - 1,4 ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

In this case, the aperture is controlled directly from the camera, since dandelion makes a lens from a NON-AI lens, and the aperture is set in the camera menu, and the diaphragm drive works automatically through the mechanics of the camera and lens. If I use a lens with only manual control of the iris on the lens, then I program the function key of Nikon to change the data about manual lenses. That is, I changed the aperture - I pressed the FN button and set the desired focal and aperture - I took a picture. When I used old manual lenses on cameras without the ability to support the old optics, and the lenses were without a chip, then I wrote down the data about the images in a notebook, tried first to take a series of images on the open one, then on the closed one so as not to be confused. You can also practice, if you do not have a notebook, shoot on an open one in the Moat, on a closed (certain value) in Jpeg. That's how I get out.

    Thank you, great review))

Arkady, if not difficult in one of his future televised reviews, shoot the night sky and the moon.

      We will try.

    Japanese Tarishche-3 :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, I forgot to mention in the review that the lens is made in Japan

      • Sergei

Is it possible to install it on a Nikon D3100? And what you need to do? And what about the focus?

        • Arkady Shapoval

You don't need any additional things for installation - just take it and snap it onto the D3100 bayonet. Focusing is manual only.

  • Andrey Kuryanov

If someone wants to buy such a lens, contact me, it is quite inexpensive. This copy, already equipped with Dandelion Lushnikov, was sold for just 1350 UAH ($ 165)

    • Victor

And how will he turn to you? :)

  • Ljubomir

There is nikkor 50-300 4.5, also satisfied

    • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Lyubomir, are you writing about a manul old lens or a modern autofocus lens? If it's manual, then I wonder how he is, in terms of the quality of the picture, otherwise they write that he is almost the best telephoto from Nikon of the 20th century, but somehow it's hard to believe ...

Hello, very helpful review. All the time I read articles from your site and find a lot of useful information. Tell me, after reading the article, I seriously thought about purchasing either the Nikkor 300 mm f / 4.5 IF-ED or the Nikkor 300 mm f / 4 AF. Now I can’t decide which one to buy (the price is about the same). I only shoot on film, the Nikon FM3A camera. Perhaps you can help me in choosing a lens. Thanks in advance =)

    • Ivan

I'm not sure if the old film carcass supports autofocus. If not, then the answer seems to be obvious. In general, it does not matter which objects to turn on a 300 mm focal film. Komura tampon adaptall vivitar native nikkors - all are good.

  • Alexey

And what is better to choose, tair 3s or this nikkor-H 300 / 4.5 ?????

    • B. R. P.

      Nikkor, of course)
